RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although intimate partner violence is a type of violence that women are frequently exposed to, its victims are adversely affected by violence at various levels, bio-psycho-socially. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between exposure to spousal violence, communication skills and burnout levels in female nurses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried out in a descriptive and cross-sectional research design. The study was conducted in a university hospital in the Black Sea region of Turkey in September 2021. Sample selection was not made in the study, and female nurses who agreed to participate in the study were included in the study. The study's sample size is 165 female nurses. A personal Information Form, Intimate Partner Violence Scale, Communication Skills Scale, and Burnout Scale were used to collect data. FINDINGS: It was concluded that the exposure of female nurses to spouse violence significantly affects their communication skills and there is a significant relationship between nurses' communication skills and burnout levels (P = 0.001). PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The attitudes and behaviors of nurses who are strong in the caregiving process are very important. Personal characteristics, communication styles and body language of nurses who are exposed to partner violence are reflected in nursing care practices and affect the caregiving process. In this context, prevention and intervention approaches for intimate partner violence of female nurses should be known.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Nursing students often encounter real-life trauma situations during their clinical experience and similar workplace environment and climate as professional nurses. This research was carried out to determine the reflections of the compassion fatigue levels of nursing final year students on their psychological resilience levels. METHODS: This research was conducted as descriptive and cross-sectional. The sample of the study consists of 250 final year nursing students. Data were collected using Personal Information Form, Compassion Fatigue Scale, and Resilience Scale. It was determined that the compassion fatigue and psychological resilience levels of nursing final year students were moderate. RESULTS: It was determined that as the levels of compassion fatigue increased, psychological resilience decreased. A highly negative and significant correlation was found between the total and sub-dimension mean scores of compassion fatigue and psychological resilience (p = 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: It was found that there was a negative and high level relationship between nursing students' compassion fatigue levels and all its sub-dimensions and psychological resilience. Resilience can improve psychosocial functioning and professional performance, including for nursing students facing stressful clinical experiences. It is important to determine the compassion fatigue and psychological resilience levels of nursing students, to determine the existing problems, and to take initiatives for this.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to determine the spiritual care needs of patients with urinary incontinence and various influencing factors. Determining the spiritual care needs of individuals with urinary incontinence may make patients feel more hopeful, peaceful, and stronger. It can also encourage individuals towards positive health behaviors, and can help nurses in choosing appropriate coping methods. A descriptive and cross sectional study was conducted with 220 patients with urinary incontinence who applied to the urology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Turkey. In the study, data were collected using the descriptive features form, the incontinence severity index, and the Spiritual Care Needs Inventory. Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to evaluate the data. This study is reported following the STROBE recommendations. In this study, mean scores of the patients' spiritual care needs scale and the severity of incontinence, age, gender, and the effect of urinary incontinence on daily life, determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the state of being disturbed by urinary incontinence, the state of performing religious rituals regularly, the state of incontinence affecting religious rituals, the importance of religious beliefs in daily life, and the level of defining spirituality (p < 0.05). In this study, it was determined that the spiritual care need scores of the patients with urinary incontinence were above the medium level, and the sub-dimension scores of meaning and hope, caring, and respect were high. In this context, it is very important to consider the spiritual care needs of patients with urinary incontinence problems.

RESUMO

Purpose: Exposure to noise has been related to aggressive behavior. As hospital noise may affect nursing students' psycho-physiological health due to their inexperience, it ;1;is important to investigate possible violent tendencies among them. Since no similar research has been found in the literature, a study has been conducted to investigate the relationship between noise sensitivity and violence tendencies among nursing students. Methods: The design of this study was cross-sectional. There were 260 nursing students (61% female) aged 18 to 24 years who filled out the Personal Information Form, Weinstein's Noise Sensitivity scale, and Violence Tendency scale. We investigated the distribution of students' noise sensitivity and violence tendencies scores in relation to age, gender, grade, and place of residence. Multiple regression analysis was performed with the noise sensitivity score and possible confounders as independent variables and the severity tendency score as a dependent variable. Results: We found smoking to be significantly and positively associated with both noise sensitivity and violent tendencies (P < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis with smoking as a possible confounder revealed that a raise of 0.203 units on the violence tendencies scale may be expected per unit increase on the noise sensitivity scale (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Due to the limitations of our study, a possible relationship between nursing students' noise sensitivity and violent tendencies is tentatively pointed out. More detailed studies are needed to test this assumption.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Factors such as the thought of losing the patient, the uncertainty of the course of the disease, and the inability to obtain sufficient information about the patient are frightening and alarming for relatives of patients in the intensive care unit. OBJECTIVES: To determine the quality of life and the style of coping with stress of the relatives of patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This study was descriptive and cross-sectional. A personal information form, the Styles of Coping With Stress Scale, and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey were used to collect data. RESULTS: The sample size of the study was 162 relatives of patients in the intensive care unit. There was a highly significant (P = .001) positive correlation between the Styles of Coping With Stress mean scores of the participants and their quality of life (as shown by the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey). CONCLUSIONS: In addition to the uncertainty and fear associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is very distressing to have a relative who is a patient in the intensive care unit. In this context, it is especially important to improve the level of coping with stress of the relatives of patients in the intensive care unit and to increase their quality of life.

RESUMO

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to see how ShotBlocker® affects the pain and comfort level associated with short peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV) insertion. METHODS: The study was conducted on a single sample group using a pre-post design. Individuals in the sample group who underwent a brief PIV insertion procedure served as both the study's control and intervention groups. In the sample group, the same nurse inserted a peripheral intravenous catheter into the cephalic veins of the right and left forearms using a standard insertion and ShotBlocker®. The pain and comfort levels were assessed using the VAS and Comfort Scale. RESULTS: When the distribution of the average pain and comfort scores of the individuals treated with the peripheral intravenous catheter was examined, it was found that the average pain score of the peripheral intravenous catheter insertion using ShotBlocker® was statistically significantly lower than the peripheral intravenous catheter insertion using the standard method, and the comfort score averages were statistically higher. When the correlation between the pain and comfort score averages of individuals undergoing peripheral intravenous catheter insertions was investigated, a statistically significant and strong negative relationship (p = 0.001) was discovered. CONCLUSIONS: As a result, the use of ShotBlocker® during the short PIV insertion procedure is an effective method to reduce the pain caused by the peripheral intravenous catheter. It was determined that the comfort level of the individuals increased as the pain due to peripheral intravenous catheter insertion decreased.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study is to perform the validity and reliability study of the Turkish version of the Management of Workplace Violence Competence Scale (MWVCS) for Nursing Students. METHOD: The methodological and cross-sectional study design was used in the method of the study. The research was carried out with 300 nursing students in Turkey. Data were collected using the personal information form and MWVCS. RESULTS: Explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis results confirmed the four-factor structure of the scale. Cronbach's α, item-total correlation, test-retest analysis, and equivalent form analysis showed high reliability. The MWVCS consists of 28 items on a five-point Likert-type scale. Four factors explained 88.729 of the total variance explained. The content validity index of the scale is 0.99. Cronbach's α of the scale was 0.880 and test-retest correlations were found as 0.76. CONCLUSION: The Turkish version of the MWVCS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing students' workplace violence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND:  For patients receiving chemotherapy, various oral care therapies are used to treat oral mucositis, but the use of black mulberry extract as an effective treatment has not been widely studied.
. OBJECTIVES:  This study examined whether black mulberry extract is an effective treatment for oral mucositis, dry mouth, and weight gain compared to sodium bicarbonate in patients with cancer.
. METHODS:  The control group (N = 20) received sodium bicarbonate, and the intervention group (N = 20) received black mulberry extract. Mucositis and weight gain were evaluated on days 1, 7, and 15 after oral care application.
. FINDINGS:  For both groups, mean scores indicated a statistically significant decrease in mucositis and dry mouth at all three time points. Mean scores were significantly lower in the intervention group on days 7 and 15. At all three time points, increases in weight were statistically significant for the intervention group but not for the control group. Increased weight gain in the intervention group was statistically significant when comparing the two groups on days 7 and 15.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although violence is a preventable phenomenon, whose negative effects may be reduced, it should be analyzed with a holistic approach to determine its possible effects on caring behaviors, which constitute the basis of the profession of nursing. This study aims to reveal the reflections of the tendency to violence among the nursing students on their caring behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was conducted within a convenient sample of 292 nursing students. Personal Information Form, Tendency to Violence Scale, and the Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI-24) were used for data collection. FINDINGS: There was a negative and moderate relationship between the tendency to violence and the scores obtained from the CBI-24 and its subscales. Simple linear regression analysis revealed that tendency to violence explained 10% and had a significant effect on caring behaviors (ß = -0.328, p < .001). PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Tendency to violence among the nursing students might be determined before their graduation and the students with such tendencies might be closely monitored and supported to reduce these tendencies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The pain experienced after subcutaneous injections can also disturb the comfort of the individual. An individual who experiences pain may refuse treatment by experiencing anxiety for subsequent injections. OBJECTIVE: This experimental study was conducted to compare the effects of standard injection application and manual pressure application use on injection pain and comfort level of having an subcutaneous injection. METHODS: This study was carried out on a single sample group with pre-post design. The individuals in the sample group constituted both the control and intervention groups of the study. In the sample group, subcutaneous injection was applied to the upper outer side of the right and left arms by the same nurse by applying standard application and manual pressure, and then the pain and comfort levels were determined using the VAS and Comfort Scale. RESULTS: It was determined that the mean pain scores of the SC injection application performed by applying manual pressure were statistically significantly lower than the SC injection application using the standard method. Again, it was determined that the mean comfort score of SC injection applied by applying manual pressure was statistically higher (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: It has been determined that manual pressure application is a more effective method in reducing pain due to subcutaneous injection compared to the standard application. It was determined that as the pain experienced by the individuals due to subcutaneous injection application decreased, their comfort level increased. In line with these results, it is recommended that health professionals, especially nurses, use non-pharmacological methods with proven efficacy more frequently to relieve pain in SC injection, follow the developments in this field and put them into practice.
