Increasingly, dementia caregiver interventions are informed by acceptance-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. These interventions promote psychological skills like psychological flexibility and value-based living. Less is known how these constructs interact within well-established caregiver stress processes. We examined a moderated mediation model (N = 161 dementia caregivers; PROCESS Procedure; SPSS Release 4.1), with BPSD frequency (Revised Memory and Behavior Problems Checklist) predicting depressive symptoms (10-item CES-D), mediated via caregiver burden (short Burden inventory). The moderator was the Values Questionnaire, and we controlled for gender, caregiver duration, age, income, and education. Results: revealed that the indirect effect of BPSD on depressive symptoms through caregiver burden was weakened through higher progress toward values (moderated mediation significant at p < .05). Committed action toward values signify caregivers' success at balancing care-related stress with other priorities. Interventions that build skills in values-based living have promise for caregivers, offering healthier ways to adjust to being a caregiver.

BACKGROUND: The Future of Nursing Scholars program prepared a cadre of PhD prepared nurses for long-term careers advancing science and discovery, strengthening nursing education, and leading transformational change in health care. PURPOSE: The purpose of this manuscript was to describe the program's impact on Scholars' outcomes, nursing schools, and perceived impact on nursing science. METHODS: An independent program evaluation was conducted, including interviewing representatives from schools and reviewing Scholars' Curriculum Vitae. FINDINGS: Two hundred one scholars were supported across 45 institutions. To date, 181 scholars graduated within 3.1 years, on average. Most graduates reported holding appointments in academic institutions. School representatives believed the program supported rapid entry into the field, longer research trajectories, and will improve the nursing faculty pipeline. DISCUSSION: The program achieved its goal of developing cohorts of PhD prepared nurses poised for long-term careers. It provided "proof of concept" on high-quality accelerated PhD education for students well matched with mentors, and elevated the national conversation on PhD education.

BACKGROUND: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Future of Nursing Scholars program (FNS) supported 45 nursing schools to create or adapt their PhD curricula to facilitate students completing a PhD degree in 3-years. PURPOSE: This analysis characterized the PhD program curricula of 45 schools. Differences in curricula were examined based on school characteristics. METHODS: Data were collected from five cohorts of school FNS applications. Summaries of curricula are provided and differences in curricula between schools were examined. FINDINGS: Most of the PhD programs (73.3%) were at very high research intensive universities. A median of 60 credit hours were needed to complete a 3-year PhD. Most programs (84.0%) required year-round enrollment, oftentimes inclusive of summers, and placed an emphasis on scholars pursuing additional coursework to meet the 3-year timeline. DISCUSSION: Findings highlight common elements of 3-year PhD curricula that can be utilized to inform the development and educational needs of future nurse scientists.

BACKGROUND: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars program used multi-pronged approach to support nurses completing accelerated PhD programs. PURPOSE: The purpose of this manuscript was to describe scholars' experiences completing PhDs, their dissertation characteristics, program leadership development sessions, scholar perceptions of program components. METHODS: Of 201 scholars, 157 (78%) completed quantitative exit surveys, providing: satisfaction with doctoral programs and FNS curricula, types of dissertation data used, dissertation formats. Interviews held with five scholars to capture representative themes. FINDINGS: Scholars utilized primary and secondary data for dissertations; 53% primarily used secondary data. The majority (68%) used manuscript dissertation formats. Approximately 64% completely agreed program curricula helped prepare them for professional transitions, to work collaboratively, lead confidently. Proportion of FNS graduates (42%) pursuing postdoctoral positions exceeded national trends. DISCUSSION: Despite stresses posed by accelerated PhD programs, scholars are well-situated to advance nursing science. Findings suggest secondary data analyses work well for accelerated programs. Scholar program experiences were positive.

BACKGROUND: Following the 2010 report, "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," Robert Wood Johnson Foundation created the Future of Nursing Scholars program to increase the number of PhD-prepared nurses who could assume leadership roles earlier in their careers by shortening the PhD education trajectory and developing leadership skills. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to describe the state of the field at program launch, the program development, and operations. METHODS: A descriptive narrative was used, which relied on literature review focused on nursing PhD program completion and presentation of FNS program objectives and findings. FINDINGS: Nurses from 46 schools pursued their PhDs as Future of Nursing Scholars. As of May 1, 2022, 181 scholars graduated with 20 scholars still enrolled. Preliminary results suggest accelerate PhD programs featuring intensive mentoring and financial support can produce well-prepared nurse researchers ready for postdoctoral positions and leadership roles. DISCUSSION: Program attributes including financial support and leadership development initiatives may be replicated.

BACKGROUND: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation launched the Future of Nursing Scholars program to support nurses to complete PhDs in 3 years in schools across the United States. PURPOSE: To explore why scholars participated in the program and to articulate challenges and facilitators to successful completion of their doctoral degrees. METHOD: Thirty-one scholars representing 18 different schools participated in focus groups at a convening in January 2022. FINDINGS: Scholars identified that funding and planned length of degree completion were important factors in their choosing the accelerated program. Mentorship, networking, and support were identified as facilitators to program completion with the tight timeline of three years noted as a challenge. DISCUSSION: Accelerated students require adequate resources including access to data, mentoring, and financing to overcome challenges presented by accelerated PhD training programs. Cohort models provide support and clarity of expectations for both students and mentors is critical.

Mental health literacy (MHL) training is essential in college environments. These programs are commonly delivered in-person via workshops or for-credit courses. Campuses now seek high-quality online options. We compare the effectiveness of a for-credit MHL course against a comparison course, focusing on whether online asynchronous delivery was as effective as in-person synchronous delivery. This quasi-experimental pretest/posttest treatment/comparison study included 1049 participants across five semesters (pre-COVID-19) who were 18 years or older and self-selected enrollment in a Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy (MHAA) course (treatment; n = 474) or a general lifespan development course (comparison; n = 575). Using linear mixed effect modeling, changes in MHL were compared across groups and across online/in-person modalities. Students in the treatment group significantly increased their MHL knowledge (ß Identifying = .49, p < .001; ß Locating = .32, p < .001; ß Responding = .46, p < .001) and self-efficacy (ß = .27, p < .001), and treatment effects did not differ across modalities. With increased concern regarding mental health issues of isolated college students during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study supports the efficacy of delivering MHL courses online.

BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) programs are a promising approach to help prevent mental health issues (MHI) among college students; however, there is an increasing need to understand individual factors that influence the development of students' MHL. AIMS: Following a strengths-based approach, we examined if college students' individual characteristics and MHI experience were associated with students' MHL. METHODS: Using two vastly different college samples (Sample 1, N = 617; Sample 2, N = 306), we used the Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy framework, guided by the health belief model and social-cognitive theory, to investigate associations between students' mental health literacy, demographic factors, and their previous experience with MHI. RESULTS: Results from nested regression analyses suggest that personal experiences with MHI are associated with higher MHL (knowledge, self-efficacy, and behaviors), even after controlling for key individual characteristics. Prior experience with having an MHI and receiving therapy appeared to be most important in explaining MHL behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Students with personal experience with an MHI may be one of the most valuable resources for increasing MHL and utilization of mental health resources on college campuses. Additional implications and future research directions are offered.

NDI-010976, an allosteric inhibitor of acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylases (ACC) ACC1 and ACC2, reduces hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and favorably affects steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis in animal models of fatty liver disease. This study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial evaluating the pharmacodynamic effects of a single oral dose of NDI-010976 on hepatic DNL in overweight and/or obese but otherwise healthy adult male subjects. Subjects were randomized to receive either NDI-010976 (20, 50, or 200 mg) or matching placebo in period 1, followed by the alternate treatment in period 2; and hepatic lipogenesis was stimulated with oral fructose administration. Fractional DNL was quantified by infusing a stable isotope tracer, [1-13 C]acetate, and monitoring 13 C incorporation into palmitate of circulating very low-density lipoprotein triglyceride. Single-dose administration of NDI-010976 was well tolerated at doses up to and including 200 mg. Fructose administration over a 10-hour period stimulated hepatic fractional DNL an average of 30.9 ± 6.7% (mean ± standard deviation) above fasting DNL values in placebo-treated subjects. Subjects administered single doses of NDI-010976 at 20, 50, or 200 mg had significant inhibition of DNL compared to placebo (mean inhibition relative to placebo was 70%, 85%, and 104%, respectively). An inverse relationship between fractional DNL and NDI-010976 exposure was observed with >90% inhibition of fractional DNL associated with plasma concentrations of NDI-010976 >4 ng/mL. CONCLUSION: ACC inhibition with a single dose of NDI-010976 is well tolerated and results in a profound dose-dependent inhibition of hepatic DNL in overweight adult male subjects. Therefore, NDI-010976 could contribute considerable value to the treatment algorithm of metabolic disorders characterized by dysregulated fatty acid metabolism, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Objective: To assess possible moderating variables that influence the effectiveness of a college-based mental health literacy curriculum, Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy (MHAA). Participants: Students at a Western University in the United States (MHAA treatment group: N = 474; Comparison group: N = 575). Methods: Using a non-randomized, quasi-experimental design over six semesters (2017-2019), students in the treatment and control groups reported on key demographic factors, experiences with mental health, and their knowledge, self-efficacy, and behaviors related to mental health literacy in a pretest/post-test format. Linear mixed effects models were used to assess moderation. Results: MHAA curriculum's efficacy varied based on participants' current depression and anxiety levels, whether they had prior personal experience with a mental health concern, whether they had been diagnosed with a mental health concern, and whether they had experienced suicidal thoughts. Conclusions: Reducing anxiety and depression among students may increase the efficacy of the MHAA program.

BACKGROUND: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation launched the Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative (INQRI) program in 2005 to generate, disseminate, and translate research to understand how nurses contribute to and can improve patient care quality. This special edition of Medical Care provides an overview of the program's strategy, goals, and impact, highlighting cross-cutting issues addressed by the initiative. METHODS: INQRI's leadership and select grantees discuss the implications of a collection of studies on the following: advances in the science of nursing's contribution to quality, measurement of quality, interdisciplinary collaboration, implementation methodology, dissemination and translation of findings, and the business case for nursing. RESULTS: A comprehensive review of the scholarly literature published in 2004 and 2009 found that the evidence linking nursing to quality of care has grown. The second paper discusses INQRI's work on measurement of quality of care, revealing the need for additional comprehensive measures. The third paper examines INQRI's focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, finding that it can enhance methodological approaches and result in substantive changes in health delivery systems. The fourth paper presents methodological challenges faced in health care implementation, emphasizing the need for standardized terms and research designs. The fifth paper addresses INQRI's commitment to translating research into practice, illustrating dissemination strategies and lessons learned. The final paper discusses how the INQRI program has contributed to the current evidence regarding the business case for nursing. DISCUSSION: This supplement describes the accomplishments of the INQRI program, discusses current issues in research design and implementation, and places INQRI research within the larger context regarding advances in nursing science.

BACKGROUND: In 2005, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation established the Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative (INQRI) program to produce rigorous evidence regarding linkages between nursing and quality of health care. The purpose of this paper is to describe scientific advances in understanding relationships between nursing, care processes, and the outcomes of the people supported by this discipline in 2004 (year before INQRI's launch) and in 2009 (5 years after INQRI was established). METHODS: Comprehensive literature reviews for the years 2004 and 2009 were conducted using a conceptually based search strategy and multidisciplinary engines. The designs, methods, results, and conclusions of included papers were summarized, synthesized, and analyzed. RESULTS: The literature search identified 389 studies (161 in 2004; 228 in 2009), which examined the relationship between nursing and patient care quality. The number of published papers in all categories of study designs-nonexperimental (72 in 2004; 97 in 2009), quasi-experimental (55 in 2004; 80 in 2009) and experimental (34 in 2004; 51 in 2009)-increased between the years 2004 and 2009. This line of inquiry also has expanded its reach through publications in a greater diversity of journals and journals with higher impact ratings. DISCUSSION: The body of evidence regarding linkages between nursing and quality of care has increased in the nature and depth of science between 2004 and 2009, as seen in higher rates and quality of publications, enhanced methodological rigor, and evidence of stronger interdisciplinary collaboration. Although the unique contribution of INQRI to this expanded body of knowledge is unclear, the evidence supports the increased importance of INQRI's goal of measuring and enhancing nursing's contributions to the quality of patient care.

Using data from the 2018 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS), this study examined the relationships between poor financial behaviors, receiving government assistance, and financial satisfaction while accounting for adverse financial experiences. The logistic regression results showed that both poor financial behaviors and adverse financial experiences increased the likelihood of receiving government assistance. The OLS results indicated that receiving government assistance significantly increased levels of financial satisfaction, whereas poor financial behaviors significantly decreased levels of financial satisfaction. While the magnitude of these associations for both receiving government assistance and poor financial behaviors was small, adverse financial experiences had a stronger influence on the levels of financial satisfaction. When we combined poor financial behaviors and receiving government assistance into a categorical variable, we gained additional insights into the connections between these constructs that warrants further research.

RESUMO

Although approximately a third of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) also experience a mental health concern, caregivers often miss early identification of these issues. In this perspective piece, we present an outline for a mental health literacy program that can enhance existing training approaches for caregivers of individuals with IDD. We describe three processes of the Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy (MHAA) curriculum and detail how it provides a strong preventative model to train caregivers to increase their mental health literacy. In describing these processes, we provide illustrative examples and conclude by providing a brief vignette that highlights how this process could be used by caregivers to help reduce mental health concerns in individuals with IDD.

Guided by the family adjustment and adaptation response (FAAR) model and using a panel survey of 1510 adults in the US administered during the summer of 2020 and a mixed methods approach, we explored associations between changes in financial stress related to COVID-19 and relational wellbeing. Regression analyses showed that, compared to those who maintained their levels of financial stress, those who reported increased financial stress reported increased conflict and those who reported decreased financial stress reported decreased conflict. However, decreased financial stress was also associated with decreases in emotional closeness and relationship happiness, suggesting that changes in financial stress can lead to both maladaptation and bonadaptation in families. Qualitative findings provide insights into factors that may exacerbate or help alleviate financial stress related to COVID-19.

Introduction: Vidutolimod, a CpG-A TLR9 agonist, was investigated in a phase 1b study (CMP-001-003; ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03438318) in combination with atezolizumab with and without radiation therapy (RT) in patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods: Patients with progressive disease after anti-programmed cell death protein 1 or programmed death-ligand 1 therapy received either vidutolimod and atezolizumab (part A) or vidutolimod, atezolizumab, and RT (part B). The primary objective was to evaluate the safety of vidutolimod and atezolizumab with and without RT. Key secondary end point was best objective response rate per Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, version 1.1. Results: Between March 28, 2018, and July 25, 2019, a total of 29 patients were enrolled and received at least one dose of vidutolimod (part A, n = 13; part B, n = 16). Intratumoral injections of vidutolimod were administered successfully, including injection of visceral lesions. The most common treatment-related adverse events (≥30%) were flu-like symptoms and hypotension. No objective responses were observed; 23.1% and 50.0% of the patients in parts A and B, respectively, had stable disease as best response. In parts A and B, 15.4% and 25.0% of the patients, respectively, had tumor shrinkage (<30% decrease in tumor size, nonirradiated). Enrollment was stopped owing to lack of objective responses. In the two patients with initial tumor shrinkage in part A, a strong serum induction of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 was observed. Conclusions: Vidutolimod and atezolizumab with and without RT had a manageable safety profile, with minimal clinical activity in heavily pretreated patients with programmed cell death protein 1 or programmed death-ligand 1 blockade-resistant NSCLC.

In this article, we explored how humility influences family relationships in religious families. We used a qualitative methodology and interviewed a religiously, ethnically, and geographically diverse sample of 198 highly religious families (N = 476). Family-level data were collected by using multiple informants through joint interviews with family members. Semistructured interviews regarding how religion influenced family life were conducted in the participants' homes. Interview transcripts were analyzed using qualitative data analysis software, team-based coding, and grounded theory procedures. Findings included four themes: (1) Pride as an obstacle to relational well-being, (2) the influence of religious beliefs on humility, (3) the influence of religious practices on humility, and (4) humility in practice. Together, these themes suggest that humility can be both grounding and empowering for individuals and relationships. Implications and future directions are discussed. The number of individuals who were raised in a religious household but have now disaffiliated from religion continues to rise. As religious differences between parents and their children can have negative effects on family relationships, renewed attention is needed regarding current trends in religious transmission. Through 109 interviews with religious parents (N = 138), we qualitatively explored how parents are currently trying to transmit their religion to their children and identified the following 4 themes: (a) parental example, (b) religious community influence, (c) religious practices, and (d) rules and boundaries. We further explored what aspects of their religion were most important to parents to pass on to their children and identified the following 3 themes: (a) a belief in God, (b) to love, serve, and respect others, and (c) good morals. Utilizing generative devotion as our theoretical framework, implications, applications, and ideas for future research are offered, with attention given to how family relationships can be strengthened and protected, even when religious transmission fails. The financial socialization individuals receive is associated not only with their future financial wellbeing but also relational, mental, and physical wellbeing. This paper is a review of the literature on financial socialization, especially papers published between 2010 and 2019 in the Journal of Family and Economic Issues. We first review family financial socialization theory and then review empirical documentation for the theory, organized by (a) family socialization processes (e.g., parent financial modeling, parent-child financial discussion, and experiential learning as three primary methods of financial socialization) and (b) financial socialization outcomes (e.g., financial attitudes, financial knowledge, financial behaviors, and financial wellbeing). Finally, we discuss future directions for the field.
