RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study examined the effect of a spirituality training program on the spiritual well-being, spiritual integrity, leadership practice, job satisfaction, and burnout of hospital middle manager nurses in Korea. METHODS: In an experimental study with a two-group (experimental vs. control) design, participants were enrolled for 5 weeks, with 24 nurses in the spirituality program and 27 in the control group. RESULTS: After the spirituality training program, spiritual well-being, spiritual integrity, and leadership practice improved and burnout was reduced significantly in the experimental group compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: The program was effective in improving psychosocial and spiritual well-being of middle manager nurses. Thus, this program could be a resource for continuing education and staff development offerings to enhance the well-being of nurses and the spiritual care of patients.

RESUMO

The main purpose of this study was to validate a scale to examine the moral sensitivity of Korean nurses. A pre-existing scale, the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire (MSQ), developed by Lützén, was used after deletion of three items. The reliability and validity of the scale were examined by using Cronbach's alpha and factor analysis, respectively. According to the results, reliability of the scale was adequate but its construct validity was not fully supported. Through discussion on evidence of validity, five subconstructs emerged. In particular, unlike the factor structure of the MSQ, two subconstructs, patient-oriented care and professional responsibility, were newly extracted. It was assumed that the other three MSQ subconstructs, conflict, meaning and benevolence (expressed as nurses being ethically good), would not be sensitive to cultural background. Given these findings, interpretations about the meaning of moral sensitivity of Korean nurses are discussed.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to develop a scale assessing the spiritual needs of Korean patients with cancer. For the scale development, qualitative interviews and theoretical analyses were conducted to extract measurable constructs within the Korean culture. As a result, 26 items were developed for the validation of a scale. The scale was administered to 257 cancer patients; the reliability and validity of the scale were examined using Cronbach's alpha and factor analysis, respectively. The reliability was 0.92. The results of factor analysis revealed five subconstructs: love and connection, hope and peace, meaning and purpose, relationship with God, and acceptance of dying. Given these subconstructs, suggestions are provided for future studies. Spirituality has been shown to be important in the lives of patients with chronic disease. Therefore, having a scale which adequately assesses patients' spiritual needs is critical to determining how to address these needs in a clinical setting.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the Holy Name Meditation on cancer patients' spiritual well-being, anxiety, depression, and pain. Twenty-eight patients were enrolled in the control group, and 18 patients were selected for the experimental group. Only the patients in the experimental group completed 5 weeks of the Holy Name Meditation Program. All participants were surveyed to assess spiritual well-being (Spiritual Well-Being Scale), anxiety and depression (Symptom Checklist 90-R), and pain (numeric pain rating scale). There were no significant differences between the two groups' general characteristics, but the baseline survey revealed that anxiety and depression levels were higher in the experimental group. Analyzing the results after controlling the baseline scores of anxiety and depression showed that spiritual well-being was increased (F = 4.80, P = .034), whereas anxiety (F = 4.98, P = .031) and depression (F = 7.28, P = .010) were decreased after the intervention. No difference in pain was found between the two groups. The Holy Name Meditation Program was thus effective in enhancing cancer patients' spiritual well-being and decreasing their anxiety and depression. Therefore, it is recommended that Holy Name Meditation be provided in clinical settings to reduce the psychosocial and spiritual suffering of cancer patients.

RESUMO

This study examined the validity and reliability of portfolio assessment using Messick's unified framework of construct validity. Theoretical and empirical evidence was sought for six aspects of construct validity. Seven faculty raters evaluated twenty student portfolios using a primary trait analysis scoring rubric. A significant relationship (r = .81-.95; p < .01) between the seven subscales in the scoring rubric demonstrates measurement of a common construct. There was a significant relationship between portfolios and GPA (r = .70; p < .01) and the NBDHE (r = .60; p < .01). The relationship between portfolios and the Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) examination was both weak and nonsignificant (r = .19; p > .05). A fully crossed, two-facet generalizability (G) study design was used to examine reliability. ANOVA demonstrated that the greatest source of variance was the scoring rubric itself, accounting for 78 percent of the total variance. The smallest source of variance was the interaction between portfolio and rubric (1.15 percent). Faculty rater variance accounted for only 1.28 percent of total variance. A phi coefficient of .86, analogous to a reliability coefficient in classical test theory, was obtained in the decision study by increasing the subscales to fourteen and decreasing faculty raters to three. In conclusion, the pattern of findings from this study suggests that portfolios can serve as a valid and reliable measure for assessing student competency.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Spirituality Promotion Program(SPP) for young nurses working in the stressful university hospital environment. METHODS: The study included 41 nurses in the experimental group, nurses who had worked less than 5 years and completed 8 weeks of SPP between June and July in 2011. The control group, 44 nurses, also received the same program after the study was completed. For the study, a survey was conducted of all participants concerning spirituality, perceived stress, positive and negative affect, empathy, job satisfaction, and leadership practice. RESULTS: No significant difference was found between the two groups on study variables. Perceived stress decreased significantly in the experimental group (p=.012). Spirituality (p=.019), positive affect (p=.014), empathy (p=.004), job satisfaction (p=.016), and leadership practice (p=.021) increased significantly in the experimental group. CONCLUSION: The results show that the Spirituality Promotion Program has positive effects on the spiritual and psychosocial aspect of young nurses. Continuation of this program for nurses is recommended in order to help them develop their selfcare ability and improve nursing competency.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to develop an instrument measuring awareness of osteoporosis. METHODS: The process included construction of a conceptual framework, generation of 86 preliminary items, verification of content validity, selection of secondary items, verification of construct validity and extraction of final items. The 86 items were reviewed for content validity by two groups of experts and were tested to evaluate inter item correlation coefficient by two groups of adult women. From June to August 2007, data were collected from 383 adult women who lived in Seoul and provinces in Korea. Data were analyzed by performing item analysis, Varimax factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS: There were 31 items in the final instrument categorized into 5 factors. The factors were labeled as "preventive behaviors (10 items)", "risk factors (5 items)", "characteristics of osteoporosis (6 items)", "improving bone health (5 items)", and "bone physiology (5 items)". Cumulative percent of variance was 60.92% and eigen values ranged from 1.20 to 12.44. Cronbach's alpha was .948 and ranged from .804 to .917. CONCLUSION: Validity and reliability of the scale are confirmed in this study showing its utility for measuring awareness of osteoporosis for women. Utilization of the scale will also contribute to designing an appropriate prevention program for osteoporosis.

RESUMO

In order to develop a Japanese version of the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist-Revised (MAACL-R), the 66 scored adjectives were translated into Japanese and translated back into English as recommended by Werner and Campbell (1971). Confirmatory factor analyses evidenced the existence of five first-order factors (i.e., the anxiety, depression, hostility, positive affect, and sensation-seeking factors) and the two second-order factors (i.e., the dysphoric and pleasant affect factors) underlying the response to the Japanese MAACL-R. Internal consistency ranged from .73 to .91, and four-week retest reliability ranged from .67 to .74 on the seven scales (Anxiety, Depression, Hostility, Positive Affect, Sensation Seeking, Dysphoria, and PASS). Although correlations with the scales of the State-Trait Personality Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale, a sensation-seeking scale, and a subjective well-being scale indicated only acceptable discriminant validity, adequate convergent validity was evidenced by the examination of these correlations. The Japanese version of the MAACL-R seems to be ready for use in research.
