RESUMO

Trichospira verticillata is an annual herb that belongs to the family Asteraceae. Trichospira verticillata extract (TVE) elicits anti-plasmodial activity; however, there has been no detailed report about its anti-inflammatory effects and molecular mechanisms. In addition, herbal plants exhibit anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing the NLRP3 inflammasome. Therefore, the primary goal of this study was to examine the effects of TVE on NLRP3 inflammasome activation by measuring interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) secretion. We treated lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-primed J774A.1 and THP-1 cells with TVE, which attenuated NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Notably, TVE did not affect nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signalling or intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and potassium efflux, suggesting that it inactivates the NLRP3 inflammasome via other mechanisms. Moreover, TVE suppressed the formation of apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC) speck and oligomerization. Immunoprecipitation data revealed that TVE reduced the binding of NLRP3 to NIMA-related kinase 7 (NEK7), resulting in reduced ASC oligomerization and speck formation. Moreover, TVE alleviated neutrophilic asthma (NA) symptoms in mice. This study demonstrates that TVE modulates the binding of NLPR3 to NEK7, thereby reporting novel insights into the mechanism by which TVE inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome. These findings suggest TVE as a potential therapeutic of NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated diseases, particularly NA.

OBJECTIVES: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) can reduce tobacco-related health risks for adults who smoke cigarettes (AWS) by facilitating complete switching away from cigarettes. However, little is known about ENDS use and switching among subpopulations that have been disproportionately affected by smoking. METHODS: AWS (age≥21 years) were recruited following their first purchase of a JUUL Starter Kit in 2018. Participants self-reported switching (no past-30-day cigarette smoking) at 1-, 2-, 3-, 6-, 9-, 12-, 15-, 18-, 21-, and 24-month follow-ups. Percent switched and percent with substantial smoking reduction (≥50% decrease in cigarettes/day among those who continued smoking) were calculated. Analyses focused on racial/ethnic minorities, persons with low income and education levels, sexual minorities, and those with mental and physical health conditions. RESULTS: Overall rates of switching away from cigarettes increased across follow-ups to 51.2% (Month-12) to 58.6% (Month-24, 87% of whom used ENDS). Among those who continued to smoke at 24 months, 45.4% reduced cigarettes/day by ≥50%. Rates of switching and substantial smoking reduction were largely similar across subgroups, with some statistically significant, but small, differences in Month-24 switching rates(e.g. education, mental/physical health conditions; switch rate range: 42~57%). CONCLUSIONS: AWS demonstrated progressively increasing switching rates over two years after purchasing JUUL products. Similar trends in switching and smoking reduction were observed across populations disproportionately affected by smoking. By facilitating switching and smoking reduction, ENDS products such as JUUL may provide an opportunity to reduce smoking-related harm among some populations disproportionately affected by smoking, potentially reducing tobacco-related health disparities. IMPLICATIONS: ENDS have the potential to benefit population health if they can replace cigarettes. This benefit must extend to populations disproportionately affected by smoking. In this real-world study, 59% of JUUL purchasers reported complete switching two years later (no past-30-day smoking, with most continuing to use ENDS). Further, 45% of those who continued to smoke reduced cigarette consumption by at least half. These rates of switching and smoking reduction were largely comparable across populations disproportionately affected by smoking (defined, e.g., by ethnicity and income). ENDS can serve as an effective harm reduction strategy to complement current efforts to reduce tobacco-related disparities.

BACKGROUND: This is authors' reply to the Commentary on our publication entitled "Adult smokers' Complete Switching Away from Cigarettes at 6, 9, and 12 Months after Initially Purchasing a JUUL e-Cigarette." METHODS AND RESULTS: Analyses addressed questions about follow-up rates and missed responses in the Adult JUUL Switching and Smoking Trajectories (ADJUSST) Study. Results demonstrate limited potential for selection bias, as participants who missed surveys were similar to those with complete data, and re-contact of participants who missed a follow-up indicated almost half were not smoking. Imputing smoking behavior for missing data would likely introduce bias and is not appropriate. The study demonstrated that JUUL products can facilitate high rates of complete switching away from cigarettes as suggested in previous experimental and observational studies. The ADJUSST cohort, including baseline nonsmokers, demonstrates a net reduction in smoking prevalence. Moreover, population modeling considering both benefits and harms demonstrated a net population benefit. CONCLUSION: While the ADJUSST Study is not without limitations, the findings are consistent with multiple streams of real-world evidence that indicate that ENDS can facilitate switching among adults who smoke, and provide population benefits.

Background: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have the potential to benefit public health if smokers completely switch from cigarettes to ENDS. Methods: A cohort of adult smokers (age ≥ 21) who purchased a JUUL Starter Kit was followed for 12 months after the initial purchase. We defined "switching" as past-30-day abstinence from smoking (even if JUUL use had stopped), and analyzed factors associated with achievement and maintenance of self-reported repeated point-prevalence switching (RPPS) at three follow-ups, i.e., no past-30-day smoking at months 6, 9, and 12. Results: RPPS was reported by 21.6% of the 12,537 evaluable smokers. Smokers with lighter smoking history and lower cigarette dependence at baseline were more likely to report RPPS. RPPS was also associated with daily use of JUUL (Month-3: OR = 2.32, 95% CI = 2.02-2.68; Month-6: OR = 1.73, 95% CI = 1.42-2.10), and with greater subjective reinforcing effects from JUUL use (assessed by the mCEQ, Month-3: OR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.38-1.56; Month-6: OR = 1.11; 95% CI = 1.02-1.20). Even among smokers who did not meet the criteria of RPPS (i.e., who smoked at least once), 35.5% reported past 30-day point-prevalence switching on at least one follow-up, and their cigarette consumption was substantially reduced compared to baseline. Conclusions: Approximately one-fifth of adult smokers reported 30-day point-prevalence abstinence at 6, 9, and 12 months after purchasing JUUL. Greater use of JUUL and stronger subjective reinforcing effects were associated with nonsmoking, validating the potential for ENDS to substitute for smoking, with potential for positive impacts on individual and population health.

BACKGROUND: Youth use of electronic cigarettes ("e-cigarettes") is an ongoing concern. Vaping is usually assumed to be of nicotine, but survey responses may also include vaping of non-nicotine substances (particularly cannabis), which can impose different risks. The current study quantifies the proportions of nicotine-specific and cannabis-specific vaping among adolescents. METHODS: Data from the Monitoring the Future (MTF) 2021 survey were analyzed with respect to the substance vaped: nicotine, cannabis, or flavoring only. Past-30-day (P30D) nicotine-specific vaping (exclusively, or also having vaped other substances) and cannabis-specific vaping were calculated. Results were also broken down by grade level, cigarette smoking history (current, former, or never), and frequency of e-cigarette use (<20 vs. 20+ days in P30D). RESULTS: Among 4706 P30D e-cigarette users, 84.2% vaped nicotine; the remaining 15.8% reported not vaping any nicotine in P30D. Cannabis vaping was reported by 48.4% of P30D vapers. Vaping both nicotine and cannabis in P30D was more common in current and former smokers than in never-smokers, and in frequent vapers (of any substance). Conversely, never-smokers were more commonly vaping cannabis but not nicotine, compared to current and former smokers. Supplementary NYTS 2022 analyses were consistent with these findings. CONCLUSIONS: A notable proportion of self-reported P30D vapers reported not vaping nicotine; nearly half vaped cannabis. Capturing the variety of substances used in vaping devices is imperative for accurate public health surveillance of both nicotine and cannabis vaping among US adolescents, considering their different respective harms and regulatory frameworks.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth is the most common cause of hospital admission in the United States. Previous studies have shown that there might be a "weekend effect" in perinatal care, indicating that mothers and newborns whose deliveries occur during the weekends are at increased risk of having adverse outcomes. This study aims to isolate the association between the weekend delivery and maternal-neonatal adverse outcomes by investigating low-risk pregnancies in nationwide data. METHODS: A population-based study of all low-risk pregnancies (in-hospital, nonanomalous, term, normal birthweight, and singleton) was conducted based on US national natality data in 2017. Four maternal outcomes (ICU admission, uterine rupture, blood transfusion, and perineal laceration) and three neonatal outcomes (5-minute Apgar <7, NICU admission, and neonatal death) were defined as adverse outcomes. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the association, adjusting for 23 maternal and neonatal characteristics and risk factors. RESULTS: Among 3 011 577 low-risk pregnancies, 6.0% were reported to have at least one of the maternal-neonatal adverse outcomes. Weekend deliveries were significantly associated with six maternal-neonatal adverse outcomes with an exception of neonatal death. In general, weekend deliveries were 1.13 times significantly as likely to have any of seven maternal-neonatal adverse outcomes than weekday deliveries (OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.11-1.14), being attributed to adverse outcomes of more than 4500 mother-newborn pairs. CONCLUSIONS: Weekend delivery is a consistent risk factor for both mothers and babies at the national level. Furthermore, studies are needed about possible modifiable factors that mediate these associations to ensure safe childbirth regardless of the day of delivery.

BACKGROUND: Perceived risk reduction motivates smokers to switch to electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). This research examines US smokers' relative risk perceptions and their prospective association with various behavioral stages of switching to ENDS. METHODS: Data from the nationally representative, longitudinal Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Adult survey, Waves 1 (2014) through 5 (2019), were analyzed. We assessed the association between the perceived risk of ENDS relative to cigarettes ("less harmful" vs. "equally harmful" or "more harmful") and 1) adoption of ENDS (among never-ENDS-using smokers), 2) complete switching to ENDS (i.e., stopping smoking, among ever-ENDS-using smokers), and 3) avoiding reversion to smoking (among smokers who had switched to ENDS), at the next wave. RESULTS: The proportion of US smokers perceiving ENDS as less harmful than cigarettes continually decreased, reaching 17.4% in Wave 5 (2019). Current smokers with such belief were more likely to adopt ENDS (aOR 1.31; 95% CI 1.15-1.50) and switch completely to ENDS (aOR 2.24; 95% CI 1.89-2.65) in the subsequent wave. Among smokers who had switched within the past year, such beliefs predicted avoidance of resumption of smoking in the next wave (aOR 0.55; 95% CI 0.33-0.93). CONCLUSIONS: Smokers' beliefs about the relative risk of ENDS compared to cigarettes had a strong and consistent association with transitions between smoking and ENDS use. Addressing the growing misperception about ENDS has the potential to contribute to public health by encouraging smokers' switching to ENDS.

BACKGROUND: The infraspinatus muscle has a crucial role in shoulder stability. Although axial shoulder rotation is useful for selective activation of the infraspinatus, no study has examined the influence of exercise position on axial shoulder rotation during shoulder external rotation (ER) exercises. Thus, this study investigated the muscle activity in the infraspinatus, posterior deltoid, and middle trapezius during shoulder ER exercises performed with and without controlled axial shoulder rotation in 2 different positions. METHODS: Twenty healthy subjects performed prone external rotation (PER) exercises with and without pressure biofeedback and seated external rotation (SITER) exercises with and without posterior humeral head gliding. Muscle activity during each ER exercise was measured using surface electromyography. RESULTS: Exercise strategy (P < .001) and position (P < .001) had a significant main effect on muscle activity in the infraspinatus and posterior deltoid. However, no significant interaction between strategy and position was observed. For muscle activity in the middle trapezius, strategy and position had a significant interaction effect (P = .014). Muscle activity in the infraspinatus increased significantly with the use of strategies to control axial shoulder rotation, whereas muscle activity in the posterior deltoid and middle trapezius decreased significantly. For all 3 muscles, greater activity was observed in the prone position than the seated position. CONCLUSION: We suggest that PER with pressure biofeedback can be useful to improve selective activation of the infraspinatus muscle while further eliciting infraspinatus muscle activity.

Caragana rosea Turcz, which belongs to the Leguminosae family, is a small shrub found in Northern and Eastern China that is known to possess anti-inflammatory properties and is used to treat fever, asthma, and cough. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of its anti-inflammatory effects are unknown. Therefore, we used lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in RAW264.7 macrophages to investigate the molecular mechanisms that underlie the anti-inflammatory activities of a methanol extract of Caragana rosea (Cr-ME). We showed that Cr-ME reduced the production of nitric oxide (NO) and mRNA levels of iNOS, TNF-α, and IL-6 in a concentration-dependent manner. We also found that Cr-ME blocked MyD88- and TBK1-induced NF-κB and IRF3 promoter activity, suggesting that it affects multiple targets. Moreover, Cr-ME reduced the phosphorylation levels of IκBα, IKKα/ß and IRF3 in a time-dependent manner and regulated the upstream NF-κB proteins Syk and Src, and the IRF3 protein TBK1. Upon overexpression of Src and TBK1, Cr-ME stimulation attenuated the phosphorylation of the NF-κB subunits p50 and p65 and IRF3 signaling. Together, our results suggest that the anti-inflammatory activity of Cr-ME occurs by inhibiting the NF-κB and IRF3 signaling pathways.

The potential biological activities of Viburnum stellato-tomentosum (VS), a plant mainly found in Costa Rica, have yet to be reported. Supplementation of VS extract for 17 weeks significantly decreased body weight gain, fat weight, fasting glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and triglyceride levels in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6J mice. The molecular mechanisms underlying the anti-obesity and glucose-lowering effects of VS extract were investigated. VS extract suppressed adipocyte hypertrophy by regulating lipogenesis-related CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα) and insulin sensitivity-related peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (Pparg) expression in adipose tissue (AT) and hepatic steatosis by inhibiting C/EBPα and lipid transport-related fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4) expression. VS extract enhanced muscular fatty acid ß-oxidation-related AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and PPARα expression with increasing Pparg levels. Furthermore, VS extract contained a much higher content of amentoflavone (AMF) (29.4 mg/g extract) compared to that in other Viburnum species. AMF administration decreased Cebpa and Fabp4 levels in the AT and liver, as well as improved insulin signaling-related insulin receptor substrate 1 (Irs1) and glucose transporter 1 (Glut1) levels in the muscle of HFD-fed mice. This study elucidated the in vivo molecular mechanisms of AMF for the first time. Therefore, VS extract effectively diminished obesity and hyperglycemia by suppressing C/EBPα-mediated lipogenesis in the AT and liver, enhancing PPARα-mediated fatty acid ß-oxidation in muscle, and PPARγ-mediated insulin sensitivity in AT and muscle.

CONTEXT: Asymmetrical movements of trunk and lower-extremity are common during the bridge exercise on the unstable condition. However, no studies have investigated whether visual biofeedback of pressing pressure on the unstable surface changes muscle activation patterns of trunk and hip extensors and pelvic rotation during the bridge exercise. OBJECTIVE: To investigate how visual biofeedback of pressing pressure influences symmetrical activity of lumbar and hip extensor and pelvic rotation. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty healthy males participated in this study. INTERVENTIONS: The participants performed 2 versions of the bridge exercise: the standard bridge exercise and the bridge exercise with visual biofeedback using amount of pressing pressure on the sling. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Surface electromyography was used to measure the symmetry (ie, the difference between dominant and nondominant sides) of muscle activation in the bilateral erector spinae, gluteus maximus, and hamstring muscles, and motion sensors were used to assess pelvic rotation. Symmetry of pressing pressure was measured using a tension meter. RESULTS: The differences between the dominant and nondominant pressing pressures and differences between the electromyography activity of the dominant and nondominant erector spinae, gluteus maximus, and hamstring were significantly smaller during the bridge exercise with visual biofeedback than during the standard bridge exercise (P < .05). In addition, there was significantly less pelvic rotation during the bridge exercise with visual biofeedback than during the standard bridge exercise (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The present findings suggest that visual biofeedback strategy may be a useful method for enhancing the symmetrical activation of the erector spinae, gluteus maximus, and hamstring and for reducing pelvic rotation during the bridge exercise on the unstable surface.

The cerebellum improves motor performance by adjusting motor gain appropriately. As de novo protein synthesis is essential for the formation and retention of memories, we hypothesized that motor learning in the opposite direction would induce a distinct pattern of protein expression in the cerebellum. We conducted quantitative proteomic profiling to compare the level of protein expression in the cerebellum at 1 and 24 h after training from mice that underwent different paradigms of cerebellum-dependent oculomotor learning from specific directional changes in motor gain. We quantified a total of 43 proteins that were significantly regulated in each of the three learning paradigms in the cerebellum at 1 and 24 h after learning. In addition, functional enrichment analysis identified protein groups that were differentially enriched or depleted in the cerebellum at 24 h after the three oculomotor learnings, suggesting that distinct biological pathways may be engaged in the formation of three oculomotor memories. Weighted correlation network analysis discovered groups of proteins significantly correlated with oculomotor memory. Finally, four proteins (Snca, Sncb, Cttn, and Stmn1) from the protein group correlated with the learning amount after oculomotor training were validated by Western blot. This study provides a comprehensive and unbiased list of proteins related to three cerebellum-dependent motor learning paradigms, suggesting the distinct nature of protein expression in the cerebellum for each learning paradigm. INTRODUCTION: The growing popularity of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among youth raises concerns about possible causal effects on conventional cigarette smoking. However, past research remains inconclusive due to heavy confounding between cigarette and e-cigarette use. This study uses propensity score methods to robustly adjust for shared risk in estimating the relationship between e-cigarette use and conventional smoking. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 8th and 10th graders were drawn from the 2015-2016 waves of Monitoring the Future (n = 12 421). The effects of (1) lifetime and (2) current e-cigarette use on (A) lifetime and (B) current conventional cigarette smoking were examined using logistic regression analyses with inverse propensity weighting based on 14 associated risk factors. RESULTS: After accounting for the propensity for using e-cigarettes based on 14 risk factors, both lifetime and current e-cigarette use significantly increased the risk of ever smoking a conventional cigarette (OR = 2.49, 95% CI = 1.77 to 3.51; OR = 2.32, 95% CI = 1.66 to 3.25, respectively). However, lifetime (OR = 2.17, 95% CI = 0.62 to 7.63) and current e-cigarette use (OR = 0.95, 95% CI = 0.55 to 1.63) did not significantly increase the risk of current conventional cigarette smoking. CONCLUSIONS: E-cigarette use does not appear to be associated with current, continued smoking. Instead, the apparent relationship between e-cigarette use and current conventional smoking is fully explained by shared risk factors, thus failing to support claims that e-cigarettes have a causal effect on concurrent conventional smoking among youth. E-cigarette use has a remaining association with lifetime cigarette smoking after propensity score adjustment; however, future research is needed to determine whether this is a causal relationship or merely reflects unmeasured confounding. IMPLICATIONS: This study examines the relationship between e-cigarette use and conventional smoking using inverse propensity score weighting, an innovative statistical method that produces less-biased results in the presence of heavy confounding. Our findings show that the apparent relationship between e-cigarette use and current cigarette smoking is entirely attributable to shared risk factors for tobacco use. However, e-cigarette use is associated with lifetime cigarette smoking, though further research is needed to determine whether this is a causal relationship or merely reflects unaccounted-for confounding. Propensity score weighting produced significantly weaker effect estimations compared to conventional regression control.

BACKGROUND: Conventional cigarette (CC) smoking is one of the most preventable causes of adverse birth outcomes. Although electronic cigarettes (ECs) are considered to be safer than CCs during pregnancy, the evidence is yet to be presented. This study examines the effects of prenatal EC use on neonatal birth outcomes compared to those of CC smokers and complete tobacco abstainers. METHODS: Data was extracted from 55,251 pregnant women who participated in the Phase 8 survey of the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System between 2016 and 2018. Participants were classified into three groups based on their smoking behaviors in the third trimester: complete tobacco abstinence, exclusive CC smoking, or exclusive EC use. Adverse outcomes included infants being small-for-gestational-age (SGA), having low birthweight (LBW), and being born at preterm. EC users were matched to complete abstainers and CC smokers who share the same baseline characteristics in race/ethnicity, age, educational attainment, income, prenatal care adequacy, and first- and second-trimester CC smoking statuses. The association between EC use and adverse birth outcomes were examined by survey-weighted logistic regression analyses in the matched population. RESULTS: Among participants, 1.0% of women reported having used ECs during the third trimester, 60% of which reported using ECs exclusively. Neonates of EC users were significantly more likely to be SGA (OR 1.76; 95% CI 1.04, 2.96), have LBW (OR 1.53; 95% CI 1.06, 2.22), or be born preterm (OR 1.86; 95% CI 1.11, 3.12) compared to tobacco abstainers. However, odds of EC users' pregnancies resulting in SGA (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.30, 1.47), LBW (OR 0.71; 95% CI 0.37, 1.37), or preterm birth (OR 1.06; 95% CI 0.46, 2.48) were not significantly lower than those of CC smokers. CONCLUSIONS: Even after accounting for shared risk factors between prenatal tobacco use and adverse birth outcomes, EC use remains an independent risk factor for neonatal complications and is not a safer alternative to CC smoking during pregnancy. Until further research is completed, all pregnant women are encouraged to abstain from all tobacco products including ECs.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of non-paretic arm movement during the bridge exercise on trunk muscle activity in stroke patients. [Participants and Methods] In total, 18 stroke patients were recruited. Surface EMG electrodes were attached over the trunk muscles (rectus abdominis, RA; internal oblique, IO; erector spinae, ES), and three kinds of bridge exercises were performed: 1) 'standard' bridge, 2) bridge with unilateral isometric arm flexion, and 3) bridge with unilateral isometric arm horizontal abduction. [Results] According to the activity of the trunk muscles measured during bridge exercises, only the IO and ES showed significantly greater muscle activity during bridges with isometric arm horizontal abduction and flexion than during the standard bridge. Additionally, comparison of the paretic and non-paretic sides showed that muscle activity was higher on the paretic side. [Conclusion] This study showed that, as an exercise to heighten the activity of the trunk muscles in stroke patients, bridge exercises with accompanying non-paretic arm flexion and horizontal abduction were more effective clinically than a standard bridge.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of isometric hip adduction and abduction on trunk muscle activity during plank exercises. [Subjects and Methods] Nineteen healthy male subjects were recruited for this study. All subjects performed the traditional plank exercise (TP), plank exercise with isometric hip adduction (PHAD), and plank exercise with isometric hip abduction (PHAB) by using an elastic band. Electromyographic (EMG) activities of the internal oblique (IO) and external oblique (EO) were measured during the 3 plank exercises by using an Electromyography system. [Results] Internal oblique and external oblique muscle activities were significantly greater during plank exercise with isometric hip adduction and plank exercise with isometric hip abduction than during traditional plank exercise. Internal oblique and external oblique muscle activities did not differ between the plank exercise with isometric hip adduction and plank exercise with isometric hip abduction conditions. [Conclusion] These findings demonstrate that loaded isometric hip movements may be a useful strategy to increase trunk muscle activity during plank exercises.

Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) has been reported to have a prominent antioxidant effect and was proposed as a promising agent for the prevention of neurodegenerative disorders accompanied by cognitive impairment. The present study investigated the ameliorating effect of AS-IV on learning and memory deficits induced by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion in rats. Rats were treated with two doses of AS-IV (10 and 20 mg/kg, i.p.) daily for 28 days starting from the 5th week after permanent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion. AS-IV treatment (at dose of 20 mg/kg) significantly improved the spatial learning and memory deficits assessed using the Morris water maze test in rats with chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. AS-IV significantly attenuated neuronal apoptosis as well as the levels of superoxide dismutase and lipid peroxidation markers, including malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, in the hippocampus. AS-IV also significantly reduced 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine expression, a maker of oxidative DNA damage, while significantly inhibited the astrocyte and microglia activation in the hippocampus. The results indicate that AS-IV has therapeutic potential for the prevention of dementia caused by cerebral hypoperfusion and suggest that the ameliorating effect of AS-IV on learning and memory deficits might be the result of suppressing neuronal apoptosis and oxidative damage in the hippocampus.

RESUMO

[Purpose] This study investigated the effects of the Neurac technique on shoulder pain, function, and range of motion in patients with acute-phase subacromial impingement syndrome. [Subjects] Thirteen patients (seven females and six males) with acute-phase subacromial impingement syndrome participated in this study. [Methods] Shoulder pain, function, and range of motion were assessed before and after the application of the Neurac technique. [Results] Pain and function scores were significantly lower after than before the Neurac intervention. Shoulder range of motion was significantly greater after Neurac intervention than before it. [Conclusion] The Neurac technique is a useful intervention for patients with acute-phase subacromial impingement syndrome.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of kinesio taping (KT) on the kinematics of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex during forward bending by individuals with reduced hamstring extensibility. [Subjects] Eighteen males with reduced hamstring extensibility were randomly assigned to one of two groups:, the hamstring KT group (n=9), or the sham KT group (n=9). [Methods] The kinematics of the lumbopelvic-hip complex during lumbar forward bending was measured using a motion capture system before and after applying KT. [Results] The angle of lumbar flexion during late lumbar forward bending increased significantly post-KT compared to pre-KT measurements in the hamstring KT group. [Conclusion] These findings suggest that KT does not directly affect an individual's movement during lumbar forward bending.

[Purpose] This study investigated the reliability of ankle dorsiflexion passive range of motion (DF-PROM) measurements obtained using a goniometer and Biodex dynamometer in stroke patients. [Subjects] Fifteen stroke patients participated in this study. [Methods] Ankle DF-PROM was assessed using a goniometer and Biodex dynamometer. Ankle DF-PROM was measured during two sessions with 7 days between tests. Intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement, and minimal detectable change values were used to assess the reliability of measurements obtained using both instruments. [Results] The intra-rater reliability for ankle DF-PROM using the goniometer was moderate and good for the two raters, while using the Biodex dynamometer, it was good for both raters. Inter-rater reliability using the goniometer was moderate; using the Biodex, it was good. [Conclusion] Both intra- and inter-reliability measurements of ankle DF-PROM were higher using a Biodex dynamometer than with a goniometer.
