RESUMO
[structure: see text] Benzene and 1,2-dichloroethane solutions of the Li(+) salt of the weakly coordinating anion CB(11)Me(12)(-) catalyze the rearrangement of cubane to cuneane, quadricyclane to norbornadiene, basketene to Nenitzescu's hydrocarbon, and diademane to triquinacene. The Claisen rearrangement of phenyl allyl ether is also strongly accelerated.
RESUMO
Two methods for extracting linewidth estimates from evenly sampled partially coherent signals, where white frequency fluctuations are the major source of noise, are discussed. The first method utilizes the Allan deviation, requiring multiple frequency estimates for each linewidth estimate. The second method utilizes the second-order autoregressive model to provide a linewidth estimate with each frequency estimate. A characterization shows that the latter technique is reliable for short data sets (=1 s). The application of these techniques to large, quantum-noise-limited ring laser gyroscopes is demonstrated. The results of the analysis compare favorably with a theoretical analysis.
RESUMO
Quantum bits (qubits) are the fundamental building blocks of quantum information processors, such as quantum computers. A qubit comprises a pair of well characterized quantum states that can in principle be manipulated quickly compared to the time it takes them to decohere by coupling to their environment. Much remains to be understood about the manipulation and decoherence of semiconductor qubits. Here we show that hydrogen-atom-like motional states of electrons bound to donor impurities in currently available semiconductors can serve as model qubits. We use intense pulses of terahertz radiation to induce coherent, damped Rabi oscillations in the population of two low-lying states of donor impurities in GaAs. Our observations demonstrate that a quantum-confined extrinsic electron in a semiconductor can be coherently manipulated like an atomic electron, even while sharing space with approximately 10(5) atoms in its semiconductor host. We anticipate that this model system will be useful for measuring intrinsic decoherence processes, and for testing both simple and complex manipulations of semiconductor qubits.
RESUMO
The design and initial operation of a vertical square He-Ne ring laser G0 with a perimeter of 14 m is discussed. This builds on earlier demonstrations of the feasibility of large ring lasers (perimeter approximately 4 m) for single-mode gyroscope operation and with lesser pulling than navigation gyroscopes. With servoing of the rf excitation to yield single-mode operation, G0 gave a quality factor 1 x 10(12) and a Sagnac line with a frequency of 287.8 +/- 1.0 Hz induced by Earth rotation Omega(E). This has confirmed some vital questions over the feasibility of very large gyroscopes for geodetic measurements at the level of 10(-9) Omega(E).
RESUMO
Garlic has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of years. While garlic oil contains many components and has been widely studied, the pharmacology of pure allicin, a constituent of garlic oil, is not well understood. We report that allicin inhibits human platelet aggregation in vitro without affecting cyclooxygenase or thromboxane synthase activity or cyclic adenosine monophosphate (AMP) levels. Allicin does not alter the activity of vascular prostacyclin synthase. However, it inhibits ionophore A23187-stimulated human neutrophil lysosomal enzyme release. In vivo allicin dilates the mesenteric circulation of the cat independent of prostaglandin release or a beta adrenergic mechanism.
