Brown/beige adipocyte thermogenesis is a process that is important for energy balance. The thermogenesis of brown/beige adipocytes occurs in the mitochondria, which is modulated by the dynamic balance between mitochondrial fusion and fission. Mitophagy is also involved in mitochondrial dynamics. The sorting and assembly machinery (SAM) complex protein, SAMM50, plays a key role in mitochondrial dynamics and quality control through regulating mitophagy. However, the roles of SAMM50 in the thermogenesis of beige adipocytes remain unknown. Thus, the objective of this study was to conduct functional analyses of SAMM50. The expression of mitochondrial fusion genes was repressed by SAMM50 knockdown but was not altered by SAMM50 overexpression. These results agreed with the distribution of the fluorescence-stained mitochondria and an mtDNA copy number. In contrast, the expression of mitochondrial fission genes showed an opposite outcome. As a result, suppression by the SAMM50 shRNA inhibited the expression of thermogenic genes (UCP1, PPARGC1A, DIO2, ELOVL3, CIDEA, and CIDEC) and mitochondrial-related genes (CYCS, COX7A1, TFAM, CPT1B, and CPT2). Conversely, SAMM50 overexpression promoted the expression of the thermogenic genes and mitochondrial genes. Thus, SAMM50 links the balance between the mitochondrial dynamics and thermogenesis of beige adipocytes.

2C (2C-x) is the general name for the family of phenethylamines containing two methoxy groups at the 2 and 5 positions of the benzene ring. The abuse of 2C family drugs has grown rapidly, although the abuse potential and neurotoxic properties of 2C drugs have not yet been fully investigated. In this study, we investigated the abuse potential and neurotoxicity of 4-chloro-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine (2C-C) and 2,5-dimethoxy-4-propylphenethylamine (2C-P). We found that 2C-C and 2C-P produced conditioned place preference in a dose-dependent manner in mice, and increased self-administration in rats, suggesting that 2C-C and 2C-P have abuse potential. To investigate the neurotoxicity of 2C-C and 2C-P, we examined motor performance and memory impairment after high doses of 2C-C and 2C-P. High doses of 2C-C and 2C-P decreased locomotor activity, rota-rod performance, and lower Y-maze test, novel objective recognition test, and passive avoidance test scores. We also observed that 2C-C and 2C-P affected expression levels of the D1 dopamine receptor, D2 dopamine receptor, dopamine transporter, and phospho-dopamine transporter in the nucleus accumbens and the medial prefrontal cortex, and increased c-Fos immuno-positive cells in the nucleus accumbens. Moreover, high doses of 2C-C and 2C-P induced microglial activation, which is involved in the inflammatory reaction in the striatum. These results suggest that 2C-C and 2C-P have abuse potential by affecting dopaminergic signaling and induce neurotoxicity via initiating neuroinflammation at high doses.

BACKGROUND: Soluble proteins and extracellular vesicles (EVs) are crucial wound repair mediators in cell-based therapy. Previous studies reported that EVs of perivascular cells stimulated migration and proliferation of cell types involved in the dermatological wound healing process. However, these studies only show effects of EVs from perivascular cells (PVCs) for in vitro models. METHODS: EVs were collected from 3D-cultured PVC (PVC-3D-EV) and compared with EVs from 2D-culture PVC (PVC-2D-EV) to investigate effects on wound contraction, angiogenesis, activation of myofibroblast, and collagen deposition. RESULTS: PVC-3D-EV was significantly improved in terms of wound contraction compared with PVC-2D-EV and the control. Activation of myofibroblast and collagen deposition in a rat skin wound model was significantly stimulated by PVC-3D-EV. In addition, angiogenesis and vascular endothelial growth factor expression were also highly stimulated by PVC-3D-EV. These results suggest that PVC-3D-EV was regulated in granulation tissue formation, angiogenesis, and wound contraction in healing of a rat skin wound. These results indicate a pivotal role of PVC-3D-EV in wound healing through multiple mechanisms. CONCLUSIONS: 3D-culture using a polystyrene scaffold is demonstrated to be a better system for providing better physiological conditions than the 2D-culture system, and EVs from 3D-cultured PVC could be a promising option for healing skin wound. BACKGROUND: Conventionally, the Thiersch operation has typically involved blind positioning of the sling, and sling tension is subjectively based on a rule-of-thumb estimate. The aim of this study was to describe standardized methods for performing the Thiersch operation. METHODS: Seventeen patients with fecal incontinence underwent the calibrated method of the Thiersch procedure. As an encircling sling, a 6-mm-wide silastic tube was used. Through 4 minimal perianal skin incisions, the sling was placed proximal to the anal skin 3 cm from the anal verge and 4 cm in depth. The circumference of the sling was 10 cm in length. Results were assessed by clinical responses and by comparing pre- and postoperative Wexner scores. The data were collected retrospectively. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 9 months (range 6-19). In 16 out of 17 fecal incontinence patients (94.1%), the median Wexner incontinence score was 0 (range 0-3) postoperatively. Localized sepsis developed in three cases (17.7%, 3/17), which were controlled with drainage and antibiotics. Fecal impaction occurred in one case (5.9%, 1/17). There was no removal or breakage of the inserted sling. CONCLUSIONS: The elasticity of the silastic tube reduced the incidence of sling breakage. According to the standardized method, the sling was placed external to the external anal sphincter muscle and at the junction of the external anal sphincter muscle and puborectalis muscle. Fecal incontinence was controlled effectively, and the incidence of fecal impaction was negligible. High reproducibility was observed with this method.

The use of new psychoactive substances (NPSs) as a substitute for illegal drugs is increasing rapidly and is a serious threat to public health. 25C-NBF is a newly synthesized phenethylamine-type NPS that acts as a 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HT) receptor agonist, but little is known about its pharmacological effects. Considering that NPSs have caused unexpected harmful effects leading to emergency and even death, scientific confirmation of the potential adverse effects of 25C-NBF is essential. In the present study, we investigated whether 25C-NBF has addictive and neurotoxic potential and causes neurochemical changes. In addictive potential assessments, high conditioned place preference (CPP) scores and stable self-administration (SA) were observed in the 25C-NBF groups (CPP [3 mg kg-1]; SA [0.01, 0.03, 0.1 mg kg-1]), suggesting the addictive liability of 25C-NBF. In neurotoxic potential assessments, 25C-NBF treatment (single super-high dose [1 × 15, 30, 40 mg kg-1]; repeated high dose [4 × 8, 15, 30 mg kg-1]) resulted in reduced motor activity (open field test), abnormal motor coordination (rota-rod test) and impaired recognition memory (novel object recognition test), suggesting that 25C-NBF is neurotoxic leading to motor impairment and memory deficits. Subsequently, immunohistochemistry showed that 25C-NBF treatment decreased tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression and increased ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1) expression in the striatum. Taken together, our results clearly demonstrate the dangers of recreational use of 25C-NBF, and we suggest that people stop using 25C-NBF and other NPSs whose pharmacological effects are not precisely known.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Mechanical micro-vibration remains insufficient for improving embryo culture conditions in human immature oocytes. This study compared the clinical outcomes and embryo development between germinal vesicle (GV) oocytes with the micro-vibration culture (MVC) system in in vitro maturation (IVM) cycles and in vivo-matured oocytes in controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) cycles in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients. METHODS: This study investigated 152 PCOS patients who underwent 159 fresh embryo transfer cycles, including IVM cycles with embryos derived from GV oocytes and the COH cycles with embryos derived from in vivo-matured oocytes. The IVM cycles were divided into groups according to the culture system used: static culture (SC) and MVC: In the IVM-S group (n = 47), SC was applied during both IVM and in vitro culture (IVC), whereas in the IVM-MV group (n = 44), MVC was applied during both IVM and IVC. For the COH cycles, in the COH-S group (n = 68), SC was applied during IVC. RESULTS: The number of in vitro-matured oocytes was similar in the IVM-S and IVM-MV groups, but the good-quality embryo (GQE; ≥6-cells) rate was significantly higher in the IVM-MV group (p < 0.01). The GQE rate and clinical outcomes of the COH-S group were significantly better than those of the IVM-S group (p < 0.05) but similar to those of the IVM-MV group. CONCLUSION: Compared with the SC system, the MVC system in IVM cycles improves the embryonic quality of GV oocytes and clinical outcomes, resulting in development of potential equivalent to in vivo-matured oocytes.

BACKGROUND: Primary intraosseous meningioma is a subset of extradural meningioma that arises in the bone, and only a few cases have been reported to date. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old man presented with decreased hearing on the right side accompanied by a disturbance of balance 10 months prior to admission. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an 8 × 7 cm osteolytic mass in the right posterior fossa related to the petrous bone, with extension to the cervical region. During surgery, the tumor was found to be located extradurally, with no invasion of the dura. The tumor was removed entirely, apart from a small portion around the jugular foramen to avoid lower cranial nerve injury. CONCLUSION: The final diagnosis was primary intraosseous osteolytic meningioma with atypical pathology. Here, we report a rare case of an osteolytic skull lesion in the skull base not invading the dura and with extensive bone destruction.

BACKGROUND: Thermosoftening of the endotracheal tube (ETT) and telescoping the ETT into a rubber catheter have been suggested as a method for reducing epistaxis during nasotracheal intubation (NTI). However, thermosoftening technique is known to make it difficult to navigate the ETT into trachea without the use of Magill forceps during NTI. The cuff inflation technique has been suggested as an effective alternative to the use of Magill forceps to improve the oropharyngeal navigation of the ETT, irrespective of their stiffness, during direct laryngoscope-guided NTI. We evaluated whether thermosoftening of the ETT telescoped into rubber catheters has an additional benefit in reducing nasal injury. Simultaneously, we also evaluated whether thermosoftening of the ETT worsened orotracheal navigability during cuff inflation-supplemented videolaryngoscope-guided NTI. METHODS: One hundred forty patients were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 groups depending on whether the ETT was softened by warming or not. The primary outcome was the incidence of epistaxis during NTI. The secondary outcome was nasotracheal navigability of the ETT, assessed by navigation grade and time required for insertion of ETT in each phase (from nose to oropharynx, from oropharynx to glottic inlet aided by cuff inflation if needed, and from glottic inlet to trachea). RESULTS: The ETTs were successfully inserted through the selected nostril of all 140 patients. In the thermosoftening group, the incidence and severity of epistaxis was significantly lower (7% vs 51%; difference of 44.2%; 95% confidence interval, 29.9%-56.2%; P < .001), and the ETT passed through the nasal cavity with lower resistance (P = .001) and less time (P < .001) when compared to the control group. No difference was found in the ease of ETT insertion (navigation grade and time required) from the oropharynx to the glottic inlet (P > .99 and P = .054, respectively) and from the glottic inlet to the trachea (P > .99 and P = .750, respectively) between the 2 groups. In both groups, all ETTs could be navigated into the trachea without the use of Magill forceps. CONCLUSIONS: Supplemented with cuff inflation during videolaryngoscope-guided NTI, thermosoftening of the ETT telescoped into rubber catheters has a substantial benefit because it significantly reduces the incidence of epistaxis without worsening the oropharyngeal navigability of the ETT.

Lespedeza bicolor, a traditional herbal medicine widely used in Australia, North America, and Eastern Asia, has various therapeutic effects on inflammation, nephritis, hyperpigmentation, and diuresis. In this study, to evaluate the effects of L. bicolor on cognitive function, we examined whether L. bicolor improved amyloid beta-induced memory impairment and assessed the possible mechanisms in mice. Catechin, rutin, daidzein, luteolin, naringenin, and genistein were identified in the powdered extract of L. bicolor by HPCL-DAD analyses. In behavioral experiments, L. bicolor (25 and 50 mg/kg, p.âo.) significantly improved amyloid beta25â-â35 (6 nmol, intracerebroventricular)-induced cognitive dysfunction in the Y-maze, novel recognition, and passive avoidance tests. Our molecular studies showed L. bicolor (25 and 50 mg/kg, p.âo.) significantly recovered the reduced glutathione content as well as increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and acetylcholinesterase activities in the hippocampus. Furthermore, we found that L. bicolor significantly increased the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and phospho-Akt, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and cAMP response element binding caused by amyloid beta25â-â35 in the hippocampus. In conclusion, L. bicolor exerts a potent memory-enhancing effect on cognitive dysfunction induced by amyloid beta25â-â35 in mice.

Keratinocytes and fibroblasts cells play important roles in the skin-wound healing process and are the cell types activated by trauma. Activated cells participate in epithelialization, granulation, scar tissue formation, wound remodeling, and angiogenesis via a series of cellular activities including migration and proliferation. Previous studies reported that the conditioned medium (CM) of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) stimulated the migration and proliferation of cell types involved in the skin wound healing process; however, these studies only show ADSC-CM effects that were obtained using 2-dimensional (2D) culture. Recently, 3-dimensional (3D) culture has been considered as a more physiologically appropriate system than 2D culture for ADSC cultures; therefore, ADSC-CM was collected from 3D culture (ADSC-CM-3D) and compared with ADSC-CM from 2D culture (ADSC-CM-2D) to investigate the effects on the migration and proliferation of human keratinocytes (HaCaTs) and fibroblasts. The migrations of the HaCaT cells and fibroblasts were significantly higher with ADSC-CM-3D compared with the 2D culture; similarly, the proliferation of HaCaT cells was also highly stimulated by ADSC-CM-3D. Proteomic analyses of the ADSC-CM revealed that collagens and actins were highly expressed in the 3D-culture system. Chitinase 3-like 1 (CHI3L1), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP), and galectin-1 were specifically expressed only in ADSC-CM-3D. Especially, through antibody neutralization, galectin-1 in ADSC-CM-3D was found to be an important factor for the migration of human keratinocytes. Therefore, these results suggest that ADSC-CM-3D was more effective in the wound healing than ADSC-CM-2D, and galectin-1 in ADSC-CM-3D was could be a promising option for skin-wound healing. Furthermore, the differential expressions of several ADSC-CM proteins between the 2D- and 3D-culture systems may be used as basic information for the development of efficient wound-healing strategies.

Cathinone derivatives are new recreational drugs known to produce psychostimulant effects. However, unlike other psychostimulants, the addictive potential of cathinone derivatives has not been widely studied. Here, we investigated the effects of pentedrone, a type of cathinone derivative, on the dopaminergic system using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blot. We also evaluated the addictive potential of pentedrone using conditioned place preference and self-administration. We found that pentedrone increased the mRNA expression of dopamine 1 receptor, dopamine 2 receptor and dopamine transporter, as well as induced phosphorylation of cAMP response element-binding protein in PC-12 cells. Additionally, pentedrone at 3 and 10 mg/kg significantly increased conditioned place preference in mice, while pentedrone at 0.3 mg/kg/infusion significantly increased self-administration in rats. Finally, we found that acute administration of pentedrone enhanced locomotor activity in a dose-dependent manner. Collectively, these data suggest that the addictive properties of pentedrone may be due to its effects on the dopaminergic system.

BACKGROUND: The volume of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) measured at hospital admission is the strongest predictor of clinical outcomes in patients with ICH. Despite the high incidence rate of ICH in Asians, there is lack of data regarding predictors of ICH volume in this ethnic group. The purpose of this study was to determine predictors of deep ICH volume and examine their effect on short-term mortality in Asians. METHODS: Hematoma volume was measured using the ABC/2 method. ICH volume was transformed to the natural log scale to normalize distributions for all analyses. We estimated the coefficients of ICH volume based on relevant predictors using multivariable linear regression. We also determined the association between body mass index (BMI) and ICH volume using a regression line and a line determined by a locally weighted scatter plot smoothing. RESULTS: A total of 1,039 patients from 2 twin hospitals in Korea who were admitted with primary spontaneous supratentorial deep ICH over a 12-year period were enrolled in this study. The median ICH volume was 19.7 ml. The average patient age was 59.2, and 62.4% of patients were men. The mean ICH volume showed a gradual, approximately 2% decrease per 1 BMI increase in the current study, after adjusting for all relevant variables (ß = -0.024; SE 0.004; p < 0.001). In addition, patients with frequent alcohol consumption showed a 10% increase in mean ICH volume (ß = 0.098; SE 0.041; p = 0.016), and patients undergoing warfarin treatment showed a 30% increase in mean ICH volume after full adjustment of all relevant variables (ß = 0.296; SE 0.050; p < 0.001). Relative to overweight patients, there was a 47, 11, and 18% increase in admission mean ICH volume in underweight, normal weight and obese patients, respectively. Patients in the first quartile and underweight BMI groups had 1.45-fold (hazard ratio (HR) 1.45; 95% CI 1.03-2.03; p = 0.035) and 1.77-fold (HR 1.77; 95% CI 1.10-2.84; p = 0.019) higher increased risk of death during the first 3 months after ICH, retrospectively. In addition, patients in groups with frequent alcohol consumption and warfarin use both showed a significant association with mortality 90 days after ICH. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated the association between various predictors and admission ICH volume with short-term mortality in Asians. Further studies are needed to account for these observations and determine their underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to determine whether intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage have different incidence patterns based on monthly variations in meteorological and air pollution parameters in the Seongdong district of Seoul, South Korea. METHODS: From January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2014, 1,477 consecutive hemorrhagic stroke events (>19 years old) were registered among residents of the Seongdong district, Seoul, South Korea. The authors calculated the relative risk of hemorrhagic stroke and its subtype incidence based on meteorological and air pollution factors. We also estimated relative risk with 95 % confidence intervals using a multivariate Poisson regression model to identify potential independent variables among meteorological factors and pollutants associated with either intracerebral hemorrhage or subarachnoid hemorrhage occurrence. RESULTS: We observed a negative correlation between intracerebral hemorrhage and mean temperature. In the multivariate Poisson model, particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter < 10 µm showed positive correlations with intracerebral hemorrhage (relative risk, 1.09; 95 % confidence interval, 1.02 to 1.15; P = 0.012). In contrast, ozone correlated significantly with subarachnoid hemorrhage occurrence (relative risk, 1.32; 95 % confidence interval, 1.10 to 1.58; P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show the relationship between hemorrhagic stroke and meteorological parameters and pollutants under similar weather and environmental conditions in a small area. Among meteorological and pollutant variables, only higher particulate matter concentrations correlated independently with intracerebral hemorrhage occurrence, while only ozone was independently associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage occurrence. These findings suggest the possibility that there are pathogenic associations between hemorrhagic stroke and meteorological factors and pollutants.

The transport properties of a single plasmon interacting with a hybrid system composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metal nanoparticle (MNP) coupled to a one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide are investigated theoretically via the real-space approach. We considered that the MNP-SQD interaction leads to the formation of a hybrid exciton and the transmission and reflection of a single incident plasmon could be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the classical control field applied to the MNP-SQD hybrid nanosystem, the kinds of MNPs and the background media. The transport properties of a single plasmon interacting with such a hybrid nanosystem discussed here could find applications in the design of next-generation quantum devices, such as single-photon switching and nanomirrors, and in quantum information processing.

STUDY QUESTION: Can antifreeze proteins (AFPs) from three different sources improve the efficacy of mouse oocyte vitrification? SUMMARY ANSWER: Treatment with AFPs can improve both murine oocyte quality and embryo development, and reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in vitrified-warmed oocytes. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: A previous study discovered that vitrification of immature oocytes and 2-cell stage embryos of mice augmented with antifreeze glycoproteins at 40 mg/ml dramatically improved the morphological integrity of the samples, suggesting that AFPs have the ability to inhibit ice formation and stabilize the plasma membrane. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Metaphase II oocytes were obtained from 4-week-old BD-F1 mice. AFPs from bacteria (Flavobacterium frigoris ice-binding protein (FfIBP)), yeast (Glaciozyma sp. ice-binding protein (LeIBP)) and fish (Type III AFP) were added to the vitrification and warming solutions individually. Survival and development, meiotic spindle organization, intracellular ROS, mitochondrial activity, DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) and repair of damaged DNA were analyzed. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Vitrification of oocytes was performed with the CryoTop (equilibration solution: 7.5% ethylene glycol (EG) and 7.5% 1,2-propandiol (PROH) for 5 min; vitrification solution: 15% EG, 15% PROH and 0.5 M sucrose for 1 min). Warming was performed in three steps with decreasing concentrations of sucrose (1.0, 0.5 and 0.25 M sucrose). MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: AFP treatment can improve murine oocyte quality and embryo development. Survival rates, cleavage rates and blastocyst rates (blastocyst per cleaved and per survived oocytes) of oocytes in AFP-treated groups were significantly higher than those in the control group [75.0, 89.0, 90.0 and 85.0% for survival rate (P = 0.012); 58.7, 89.0, 87.8 and 81.2% for cleavage rate (P = 0.003); 52.3, 87.7, 78.5 and 76.8% for blastocyst per cleaved oocytes (P < 0.01); 30.7, 78.0, 68.9 and 62.4% for blastocyst per survived oocytes (P < 0.01) in control, FfIBP, LeIBP and Type III AFP-treated groups, respectively]. The mean (±SD) number of apoptotic blastomeres per blastocyst was significantly lower in AFP-treated groups than in the control group (9.1 ± 1.0, 2.0 ± 1.7, 2.3 ± 1.2 and 2.7 ± 2.4 in control, FfIBP, LeIBP and Type III AFP-treated groups, respectively, P = 0.040). FfIBP treatment was the most effective in maintaining normal meiotic spindle organization and chromosome alignment (52.0, 92.0, 80.0 and 83.0% in control, FfIBP, LeIBP and Type III AFP-treated groups, respectively, P < 0.01). Intracellular ROS levels (mean ± SD) significantly decreased in the AFP-treated groups (17.0 ± 11.2, 8.4 ± 8.2, 10.3 ± 6.4 and 11.6 ± 12.3 in control, FfIBP, LeIBP and Type III AFP-treated groups, respectively, P < 0.01), and the FfIBP and LeIBP groups had significantly lower DNA DSBs, compared with controls (65.2, 30.8, 44.4 and 55.8% in control, FfIBP, LeIBP and Type III AFP-treated groups, respectively, P < 0.01). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: The origins of FfIBP and LeIBP were bacteria and yeast, respectively. Therefore, treatment of human oocytes and embryos with these AFPs should be tested before clinical application. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: After further research, AFPs can potentially be applied to human oocyte cryopreservation to improve the efficacy of vitrification. BACKGROUND: Occipital neuralgia is a rare cause of severe headache characterized by paroxysmal shooting or stabbing pain in the distribution of the greater occipital or lesser occipital nerve. In cases of intractable occipital neuralgia, a definite cause has not been uncovered, so various types of treatment have been applied. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic factors, safety, and long-term clinical efficacy of second cervical (C2) ganglion decompression for intractable occipital neuralgia. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed in 68 patients with medically refractory occipital neuralgia who underwent C2 ganglion decompression. Factors based on patients' demography, pre- and postoperative headache severity/characteristics, medication use, and postoperative complications were investigated. Therapeutic success was defined as pain relief by at least 50 % without ongoing medication. RESULTS: The visual analog scale (VAS) score was significantly reduced between the preoperative and most recent follow-up period. One year later, excellent or good results were achieved in 57 patients (83.9 %), but poor in 11 patients (16.1 %). The long-term outcome after 5 years was only slightly less than the 1-year outcome; 47 of the 68 patients (69.1 %) obtained therapeutic success. Longer duration of headache (over 13 years; p = 0.029) and presence of retro-orbital/frontal radiation (p = 0.040) were significantly associated with poor prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: In the current study, C2 ganglion decompression provided durable, adequate pain relief with minimal complications in patients suffering from intractable occipital neuralgia. Due to the minimally invasive and nondestructive nature of this surgical procedure, C2 ganglion decompression is recommended as an initial surgical treatment option for intractable occipital neuralgia before attempting occipital nerve stimulation. However, further study is required to manage the pain recurrence associated with longstanding nerve injury.

The purpose of this study was to identify important factors of consumers' intention to attend professional soccer events among Saudi Arabian soccer fans. To explore the decision-making process of this relatively understudied population, the theory of planned behavior was used as theoretical background. Particularly, this study measured the effect of attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control (time and money), and game importance on intention to attend, and examined the moderating role of commitment. Structural equation modeling (SEM) using 231 Saudi university students (M = 21.9 yr., SD = 1.21) indicate that attitude and game importance were significantly related to attendance intention. The effect of subjective norms was significant only for the low commitment group and game importance was more important for the low than the high commitment group.

Cisternal irrigation with thrombolytic agents was used to prevent post-SAH vasospasm, but its role remained inconclusive. To verify effectiveness of papaverine (PPV) in preventing vasospasm, we studied relationship between inflammatory biologic markers and vasospasm. This prospective study included 121 patients with clipped anterior circulation aneurysms that had ruptured, and 372 control patients. Patients were divided into three groups according to cisternal irrigation method: simple drain, papaverine group, and urokinase (UK) group. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) were determined in CSF and serum on days 3 and 7 after SAH. The PPV group showed similar incidence of vasospasm with UK group, but lower incidence than the simple drain group. The levels of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were significantly higher in the SAH group than in the control group. CSF and serum levels were more elevated on day 7 than day 3, and the degree of elevation were more marked when measured in the CSF than in the serum. However, there was no statistical difference between measured levels of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, and vasospasm development. PPV cisternal irrigation was similarly effective as UK at preventing vasospasm. Although neither PPV nor UK irrigation could reduce the concentration of adhesion molecules compared with simple drain, we found levels of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were specifically elevated in the CSF. Therefore, further research should focus on anti-inflammation as a therapeutic target against cerebral vasospasm and on the CSF as the optimum place where such inflammatory action practically brought about.

BACKGROUND: Achieving successful outcomes in hair transplant surgery involves various critical factors, including donor area harvesting, graft survival, and minimizing post-operative complications. This study investigates the differences in grafts obtained using the rotary and oscillatory punch methods during follicular unit extraction (FUE) surgery. METHODS: The study involved 15 patients undergoing FUE. Four 4 × 6 cm2 areas in two rows were selected for each patient, with each row utilizing a different punch method (rotary or oscillatory). The grafts were extracted and examined under a microscope, classified into single, double single, double, and triple categories. The total yield rate and average number of hairs per graft were measured and compared. RESULTS: The average number of hair follicles per graft was 2.029 for the rotary method and 2.084 for the oscillatory method, indicating no statistically significant difference. However, the total yield rate was 88.3% for the rotary group and 90.5% for the oscillatory group, with the difference being statistically significant. In selected cases with soft scalps or deeper punch requirements, the oscillatory method showed significantly better results, with an average of 2.078 hairs per graft compared to 1.836 for the rotary method. The total yield rate in these cases was 91% for oscillatory and 86% for rotary. CONCLUSION: While the overall differences between rotary and oscillatory punches are minimal, the oscillatory punch is significantly more effective in cases with soft scalps or deeper punch requirements. Adhering to a structured guideline before extraction can help reduce the transection rate and increase the number of hairs per graft.
