RESUMO
A method for sampling and analysis of atmospheres for sulfur dioxide is presented. This method is based on adsorption of sulfur dioxide on an impregnated charcoal sorbent followed by desorption and analysis by ion chromatography. The precision and recovery of the sampling and analytical method were determined at 2, 1, 0.5 and 0.1 times the present OSHA standard of 5 ppm.

A new method for the collection and analysis of atmospheric formaldehyde is described. Known concentrations of formaldehyde were generated and collected on solid sorbent tubes containing impregnated charcoal which converted formaldehyde to formate. After desorption with dilute hydrogen peroxide, the formate was analyzed by ion chromatography. The sample generation system, collection on impregnated charcoal, desorption, ion chromatographic analysis, and recoveries are presented. The overall recovery of laboratory generated samples was 100% with 11% relative standard deviation. These samples were collected at 50 cc/min and 200 cc/min.

A laboratory procedure is described that has been used in determining the breakdown products of plastic compounds used in injection molding operations. These compounds include polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, methyl methacrylate, polyethylene, polypropylene, and nylon. Laboratory samples were generated at injection molding temperatures and collected on various solid sorbents. Detector tubes were used for qualitative information to indicate whether certain classes of compounds were present. Compounds identified from the analyses of these laboratory samples are listed. Qualitative gas chromatography-mass spectormetry (GC/MS) data obtained from charcoal tube samples collected at a tire molding and a rubber producing company are also presented.

Research is reported concerning an acceptable method for sampling and analyzing samples for carbon disulfide. Test atmospheres of carbon disulfide were generated dynamically using the syringe injection method, ant the theoretical concetnration verified by a liquid absorbent, colorimetric method. The CS2 was adsorbed on charcoal tubes, eluted with benzene, and quantitated with a gas chromatography equipped with a sulfer flame photometric detector. The results compared with the colorimetris analysis. The sensitivity of this method is 1 mug on a charcoal tube. The charcoal tubes were also tested for breakthrough volumes, holding power vs time, and the effect of air transport and temperature cycles.
