RESUMO

For a complete colonoscopic examination, a high intubation rate and a short intubation time have been demanded to colonoscopists, if possible. The aim of the present study was to compare these examination parameters, intubation time and rate, according to the length of colonoscope. A total of 507 healthy Korean subjects were randomly assigned into two groups: intermediate length adult-colonoscope (n=254) and long length adult-colonoscope (n=253). There were significant differences in cecal intubation time and in terminal ileal intubation rate according to the length of the colonoscope. Time-to-cecal intubation was shorter for the intermediate-scope group than for the long-scope group (234.2 ± 115.0 sec vs 280.7 ± 135.0 sec, P < 0.001). However, the success rate of terminal ileal intubation was higher in the long-scope group than in the intermediate-scope group (95.3% vs 84.3%, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in other colonoscopic parameters between the two groups. The intermediate length adult-colonoscope decreased the time to reach the cecum, whereas the long-scope showed a success rate of terminal ileal intubation. These findings suggest that it is reasonable to prepare and use these two types of colonoscope appropriate to the needs of the patient and examination, instead of employing only one type of colonoscope.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim in this study was to investigate the diet and nutritional knowledge of elite Korean wrestlers and verify the differences in their exercise performance , muscle damage indicators, and antioxidant enzyme levels according to wrestler level. METHODS: A 7-day dietary and nutrition knowledge survey was administered to 30 adult male elite wrestlers (national team: n=11; professional team: n=19). The Wingate test was conducted for 60 seconds to analyze muscle damage indicators and antioxidant levels. Blood and blood lactate concentration analyses were performed four times; the statistical significance level of all data was p<0.05. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in general nutrition knowledge questionnaire (GNKQ) scores (p=0.043), diet (p=0.001), anaerobic performance (p=0.001), muscle damage indicators (p=0.026), antioxidant levels, and blood lactic acid concentrations (30 min after exercise, p=0.007; 90 min after exercise, p=0.038) between the national and the professional groups. CONCLUSION: To the findings confirm the relationship between the differences in diet, nutrition, and motor function for wrestlers of different expertise levels. In a follow-up, a comprehensive study on nutrition knowledge, athlete training , and weight loss is needed that considers a wider scope of subjects and analyzes additional variables.

RESUMO

The persistent challenges encountered in metal-transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) junctions, including tunneling barriers and Fermi-level pinning, pose significant impediments to achieving optimal charge transport and reducing contact resistance. To address these challenges, a pioneering self-aligned edge contact (SAEC) process tailored for TMD-based field-effect transistors (FETs) is developed by integrating a WS2 semiconductor with a hexagonal boron nitride dielectric via reactive ion etching. This approach streamlines semiconductor fabrication by enabling edge contact formation without the need for additional lithography steps. Notably, SAEC TMD-based FETs exhibit exceptional device performance, featuring a high on/off current ratio of ∼108, field-effect mobility of up to 120 cm2/V·s, and controllable polarity─essential attributes for advanced TMD-based logic circuits. Furthermore, the SAEC process enables precise electrode positioning and effective minimization of parasitic capacitance, which are pivotal for attaining high-speed characteristics in TMD-based electronics. The compatibility of the SAEC technique with existing Si self-aligned processes underscores its feasibility for integration into post-CMOS applications, heralding an upcoming era of integration of TMDs into Si semiconductor electronics. The introduction of the SAEC process represents a significant advancement in TMD-based microelectronics and is poised to unlock the full potential of TMDs for future electronic technologies.

RESUMO

A black phosphorus (BP)-based reusable biosensor platform is developed for the repeated and real-time detection of cortisol using antibody-conjugated magnetic particle (MP) structures as a refreshable receptor. Here, we took advantage of the low-noise characteristics of a mechanically exfoliated BP-based field-effect transistor (FET) and hybridized it with anti-cortisol antibody-functionalized MPs to build a highly sensitive cortisol sensor. This strategy allowed us to detect cortisol down to 1 aM in real time and discriminate cortisol from other hormones. In this case, we could easily remove MPs with used antibodies from the surface of a BP-FET and reuse the chip for up to eight repeated sensing operations. Moreover, since our platform could be fabricated using conventional photolithography techniques and the sensor can be reused multiple times, one should be able to significantly reduce operation costs for practical applications. Furthermore, this method could be utilized to detect different hormones with high sensitivity and selectivity in complex environments such as artificial saliva solutions. In this respect, our reusable BP-FET biosensing platform can be a powerful tool for versatile applications such as clinical diagnosis and basic biological analysis by conjugating various antibodies.

RESUMO

With the advancement of semiconductor manufacturing technology, the effects of trace impurities in industrial chemicals have grown significantly. In industrial processes, conventional purification methods, such as filtration and distillation, have reached their limits for removing nanoparticles from aqueous and acidic solutions. Especially, silicon and silicate are two fundamental byproducts in semiconductor fabrication processes. Assembly and subsequent removal of these materials at the nanoparticle level have been confronted with significant challenges. Therefore, it is imperative to develop technologies to effectively control and remove these impurities for next-generation manufacturing processes. In this study, we explored the use of electric field-assisted assembly to agglomerate silicate and silicon nanoparticles in industry-standard aqueous and acidic solutions. By applying an alternating current electric field, we induced dipole moments in the nanoparticles, which led to their agglomeration. Notably, nanoparticles smaller than 4 nm grew into significantly larger ones, with submicroparticle sizes exceeding 87 nm for silicate and reaching 130 nm for silicon. Through systematic analysis of the size distribution changes, we identified optimal agglomeration times of 10 min for silicate and 20 min for silicon, revealing effective agglomeration within the frequency range of 1-1000 kHz. The agglomerated particles were stable for 5 days. Our electric field-assisted approach to obtain assembled nanoparticles that can be subsequently removed by conventional purification processes holds promise for enhancing future microfabrication processes, such as semiconductor manufacturing, potentially improving the manufacturing yield and uniformity by reducing the number of trace particles that can act as defective sites.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the physical activity and eating habits of elite athletes to identify changes in their weight and participation levels in competitions pre- and post-COVID-19, and to establish a database of the abovementioned factors for the post-COVID-19 period. METHODS: This study surveyed 913 elite adult athletes from 22 sports. They were divided into two groups: weight loss athletes' group (WLG) and non-weight loss athletes' group (NWLG). In addition to demographic factors, the questionnaire included questions about physical activity, sleep, and eating habits pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic. The survey included 46 questions requiring short subjective answers. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. RESULTS: In the post-COVID-19 pandemic period, physical activity and sitting decreased in athletes of both groups. The difference in the number of meals consumed by both groups varied, and the number of tournaments the athletes participated in decreased for all sports. The success or failure of weight loss is essential for maintaining athletes' performance and health. CONCLUSION: Coaches play an important role in investigating and managing the weight loss regimen of athletes during crisis situations like a pandemic. Additionally, athletes must find the best way to maintain their competencies to the standards set before COVID-19. Adhering to such a regimen will have the greatest impact on their tournament participation in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period.

RESUMO

Effective channel control with low contact resistance can be accomplished through selective ion implantation in Si and III-V semiconductor technologies; however, this approach cannot be adopted for ultrathin van der Waals materials. Herein, we demonstrate a self-aligned fabrication process based on self-terminated p-doping and layer-by-layer chemical etching to achieve low contact resistance as well as a high on/off current ratio in ultrathin tungsten diselenide (WSe2) field-effect transistors (FETs). Damage-free layer-by-layer thinning of the WSe2 channel is repeated up to a thickness of approximately 1.4 nm, while maintaining the selectively p-doped source/drain regions. The device characteristics of the recessed-channel WSe2 FET are systematically monitored during this layer-by-layer recess-channel process. The WSe2 etching rate is estimated to be 2-3 layers per cycle of oxidation and subsequent chemical etching. The self-terminated tungsten oxide (WOX) layer grown through ultraviolet-ozone treatment induces robust p-doping in the neighboring (or underlying) WSe2 through the electron withdrawal mechanism, which remains in the source/drain regions after channel oxide removal. The adopted self-terminated and self-aligned recess-channel process for ultrathin WSe2 FETs enables the realization of a high on/off output current ratio (>108) and field-effect mobility (∼190 cm2/V·s), while maintaining low contact resistance (0.9-6.1 kΩ·µm) without a postannealing process. The proposed facile and reproducible doping and atomic-layer-etching method for the fabrication of a recessed-channel FET with an ultrathin body can be helpful for high-performance two-dimensional semiconductor devices and is applicable to post-Si complementary metal-oxide semiconductor devices.

RESUMO

The dielectric layer, which is an essential building block in electronic device circuitry, is subject to intrinsic or induced defects that limit its performance. Nano-layers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) represent a promising dielectric layer in nano-electronics owing to its excellent electronic and thermal properties. In order to further analyze this technology, two-dimensional (2D) h-BN dielectric layers were exposed to high-energy proton irradiation at various proton energies and doses to intentionally introduce defective sites. A pristine h-BN capacitor showed typical degradation stages with a hard breakdown field of 10.3 MV cm-1, while h-BN capacitors irradiated at proton energies of 5 and 10 MeV at a dose of 1 × 1013 cm-2 showed lower hard breakdown fields of 1.6 and 8.3 MV cm-1, respectively. Higher leakage currents were observed under higher proton doses at 5 × 1013 cm-2, resulting in lower breakdown fields. The degradation stages of proton-irradiated h-BN are similar to those of defective silicon dioxide. The degradation of the h-BN dielectric after proton irradiation is attributed to Frenkel defects created by the high-energy protons, as indicated by the molecular dynamics simulation. Understanding the defect-induced degradation mechanism of h-BN nano-layers can improve their reliability, paving the way to the implementation of 2D h-BN in advanced micro- and nano-electronics.

RESUMO

We investigate various group-size distributions occurring in a situation where each group's resource is exposed to appropriation by other groups. The amount of appropriation depends on the size difference between groups. Our work focuses on the cases where the entire community isolates a small group or even an individual to maximize its gain. While people's basic motivation to form a group can be understood based on the group-size effect on multiplying a collective asset, sensitive factors that induce a asymmetric group distribution are the group efficiency and the ratio of secured assets to assets pending in a competition. We show that social rejection to a minor group may occur when the group efficiency is relatively low and their asset is severely exposed to possible appropriation.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to determine if topical application of Moringa oleifera extracts and its bioconversion product fermented by Rhizopus oligosporus has therapeutic properties enhancement for treatment of atopic dermatitis. Rhizopus oligosporus (KCCM 11232P) was used to ferment Moringa leaves' extracts in this study. Comparison of organic acids and flavonols in Moringa simple extracts and their fermented product by HPLC analysis revealed that concentration of organic acids and flavonols of bioconversion product was lower than that of hot water extracts. The fermentation process is used as a nutrient for isolation of each component by microorganisms and growth of microorganisms. The results demonstrated that MF extracts effectively reduced clinical features based on macrography, scratching count, and severity scores, as well as model's serum IgE level, including histopathological analyses.

RESUMO

Mouse Usp42, a novel ubiquitin specific protease gene, was isolated from mouse embryonic stem cells. It consists of 1,324 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 146kDa and contains the conserved Cys, Asp (I), His and Asn/Asp (II) domains defined as one of characteristics for deubiquitinating enzymes. RT-PCR analysis showed that the Usp42 transcript is expressed in NIH3T3 cells, B- and T-lymphocytes, and L1210 cells. Northern blot analysis revealed that Usp42 is expressed mainly in brain, lung, thymus and testis, and at mouse E10.5 the most during embryonic development. Usp42 expression rises from 2 weeks after birth to round-spermatid stage and decreases from condensing-spermatid stage during spermatogenesis. Deubiquitinating enzyme assays demonstrated that Usp42 can cleave ubiquitin from ubiquitinated substrates in vitro and in vivo. Taken all together, it is suggested that Usp42 is one of typical deubiquitinating enzymes, which may play an important role in mouse embryogenesis and spermatogenesis.

RESUMO

We describe the isolation of endothelial cells from the center region of the attached embryoid body (EB) by a two-step enzyme treatment. The isolated cells from the center and outgrowth region of the EB were characterized separately. As human embryonic stem (hES) cells differentiated in EB, they lost expression of the undifferentiated marker Oct-4, whereas expression levels of endothelial-specific markers were increased. Using RT-PCR, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis, and immunofluorescence, we have shown that various endothelial cell markers, including platelet/endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM), von Willebrand factor (vWF), Flk-1, and Tie2, were expressed on the attached EB. Compared with the outgrowth region of EB, the center region had a higher population of cells with these endothelial cell markers. Once isolated by the twostep enzyme treatment, cells from the center region continued to differentiate into endothelial cell lineage while expression level of endothelial cell markers in cells from the outgrowth region decreased in subcultures. This study has demonstrated that the isolation of EB by a two-step enzyme treatment is a useful technique to obtain endothelial cell marker-positive cells with high yield. Furthermore, a similar approach can be taken to identify the location and distribution of specific cell types in EB and thereby allow us to isolate and expand specific cell types.

RESUMO

In a previous study, we reported a list of genes expressed differentially in primordial and primary follicles [Park et al., Fertil. Steril., 83, 410-418 (2005)]. An innovative experimental system is required to evaluate the functions of these genes in folliculogenesis, particularly primordial-primary follicle transition. In this study, ovarian tissues were dissociated, and isolated cells were transfected using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) for disrupting a specific gene, followed by ovarian reconstruction via calcium alginate encapsulation. The effects of RNA interference (RNAi) on follicular development were evaluated by a histological observation of the reconstructed ovarian tissue. Interestingly, follicular formation and development showed differences between control and experimental groups. Thus, even though this system includes some problems that need to be solved, ovarian reconstruction following the modification of gene expression of individual ovarian component cells could lead the way to methods of studying molecular mechanisms of primordial-primary follicle transition.

RESUMO

The pathogens originating from diffuse pollution have raised much concern recently. In many countries, pathogen levels are monitored in surface water by measuring the pathogen indicator organism level, which indicates the concentration of pathogen associated microorganisms to determine contamination. Among indicator organisms, total coliform, fecal coliform, and Escherichia coli were selected for study, and their concentration as well as their flow rate were monitored at monitoring stations from October, 2001 to April, 2003. Monitoring stations include six sampling stations in the Geum River, two small watersheds used for forestry and agricultural land, one large wastewater treatment plant, one separate sewer overflow site, and one separate sewer overflow site in the Geum River basin. The coliform concentration of the combined sewer overflow was the highest, followed by the runoff from agricultural land use, the separate sewer overflow, and the runoff from forestry land use. The Pearson correlation coefficient for flow rate against total coliform concentration was 0.71 and was significant at 0.01 level, while the Pearson coefficient for other water quality constituents showed weak correlation (-0.36 to +0.37) against flow rate. Coliform concentration showed higher correlation against suspended solid concentration or flow rate during storm flow condition than during low flow condition. Two different relationship lines could explain the relationships between the flow rate and coliform loadings. Load duration curve technique was presented to assess the relative contributions of diffuse and point source pollution to the pathogen level at monitoring sites in the Geum River.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While the perinatal outcomes of active maternal smoking are well documented, results of the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure during pregnancy are inconsistent. We aimed to examine the effect of ETS exposure, assessed by maternal hair nicotine levels at 35th week of gestation, on birth weight and the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) and low birth weight (LBW). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 871 non-smoking healthy pregnant women were recruited by one Korean hospital between 1 October 2006 and 31 July 2007. Hair samples were collected and anthropometric questionnaires administered at 35th week of gestation. The primary outcome was birth weight and secondary outcomes were the risk of babies being SGA and LBW. RESULTS: Log-transformed hair nicotine concentrations were inversely related with birth weight after adjusting for confounding variables (ß=-0.077, p=0.037). After stratifying hair nicotine levels by tertiles (T1, low [0.0-0.28 ng/mg]; T2, medium [0.29-0.62 ng/mg]; and T3, high [0.63-5.99 ng/mg]), the mean birth weight in each groups were 3,342 g (T1) 3,296 g (T2) and 3,290 g (T3), respectively. However the difference between groups was not statistically significant by analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA) adjusting for covariates (p=0.062). In logistic regression analysis, the risk of SGA was higher in the T3 (OR=1.59, 95%CI 1.05-2.42) than in the reference group (T1), after controlling for confounding variables. The risk of low birth weight (<2,500 g, LBW) was not significantly higher (OR=1.44, 95%CI 0.95-2.19), but the risk of babies being below 3,000g birth weight was increased in the T3 group (OR=1.53, 95%CI 1.00-2.36) compared with that in the T1 group. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal ETS exposure during pregnancy was inversely related with birth weight. The risk of SGA increased in the highest ETS exposure group compared with in the low exposure group. To prevent ETS exposure during pregnancy, more comprehensive tobacco control policies are needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although Asian people are known to have lower bone mass than that of Caucasians, little is known about coffee-associated bone health in Asian. This study aimed to assess the relationship between coffee consumption and bone mineral density (BMD) in Korean premenopausal women. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2009. The study population consisted of 1,761 Korean premenopausal women (mean age 36 years) who were measured for lumbar spine and femoral neck BMD and who completed a standardized questionnaire about coffee intake frequency. We excluded the participants who took hormone replacement therapy or medication for osteoporosis. The cross-sectional relationship between coffee consumption and impaired bone health (osteopenia or osteoporosis) was investigated by bone densitometry. RESULTS: Coffee consumption showed no significant association with BMD of either femoral neck or lumbar spine, independent of other factors. The adjusted odds ratios for BMD for those who consumed once in a day, twice a day and three times a day were 0.94 (0.70-1.26), 0.93 (0.67-1.28), and 1.02 (0.69-1.50), respectively (P for trend = 0.927). CONCLUSION: This study does not support the idea that coffee is a risk factor for impaired bone health in Korean premenopausal women.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Bowel cleansing is generally regarded as time-consuming and unpleasant among patients. Patients commonly state that bowel preparation provokes more discomfort than the actual colonoscopic examination. The purpose of this study was to compare two regimens of sodium phosphate (NaP) tablets versus polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution for bowel preparation in healthy Korean adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single center, prospective, open-label, investigator-blinded, randomized, controlled-pilot study. A total of 62 healthy Korean subjects were randomly assigned to two groups (NaP vs. PEG). Efficacy, safety, and patient-related outcomes, as well as procedural parameters, were evaluated. RESULTS: Although there were no significant differences in total Ottawa bowel quality score, fluid scores and the rate of adequate bowel preparation were significantly better in the NaP group than the PEG group. Additionally, the NaP group showed better results regarding patient tolerance, satisfaction, preference, and rate of adverse events than the PEG group. Significant fluctuations in specific serum electrolytes were common and of a greater magnitude in the NaP group than the PEG group. However, these abnormalities were transient and did not result in serious complications and side effects. CONCLUSION: In this study, NaP tablets were shown to be an effective, well-tolerated, and acceptable regimen for bowel preparation. Also, our study suggests that NaP tablets may be safe and can be used as a bowel cleansing agent in healthy adults undergoing elective colonoscopy. Further multicenter, large scale studies are needed to confirm these findings.

RESUMO

From the endoscopists' point of view, although the main focus of upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examination is the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (usually bulb and 2nd portion including ampulla of Vater), the portions of the upper airway may also be observed during insertion and withdrawal of the endoscope, such as pharynx and larynx. Thus, a variety of pathologic lesions of the upper airway can be encountered during upper endoscopy. Among these lesions, an epiglottic cyst is relatively uncommon. The cyst has no malignant potential and mostly remains asymptomatic in adults. However, if large enough, epiglottic cysts can compromise the airway and can be potentially life-threatening when an emergency endotracheal intubation is needed. Thus, patients may benefit from early detection and treatment of these relatively asymptomatic lesions. In this report, we present a case of epiglottic cyst in an asymptomatic adult incidentally found by family physician during screening endoscopy, which was successfully removed without complication, using a laryngoscopic carbon dioxide laser.

RESUMO

Lhx8 (LIM homeobox 8) gene encodes a LIM homeodomain transcriptional regulator that is preferentially expressed in germ cells and critical for mammalian folliculogenesis. However, Lhx8 DNA binding sequences are not characterized yet. We aimed to identify and characterize a cis-acting sequence of germ-cell specific transcriptional factor, Lhx8. To identify Lhx8 DNA binding element, Cyclic Amplification of Sequence Target (CAST) Analysis was performed. Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA) was processed for the binding specificity of Lhx8. Luciferase assay was for the transcriptional activity of Lhx8 through identified DNA binding site. We identified a putative cis-acting sequence, TGATTG as Lhx8 DNA binding element (LBE). In addition, Lhx8 binds to the LBE with high affinity and augments transcriptional activity of luciferase reporter driven by artificial promoter containing the Lhx8 binding element. These findings indicate that Lhx8 directly regulates the transcription of genes containing Lhx8 binding element in oocytes during early folliculogenesis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Comprehensive Hand Repetitive Intensive Strength Training (CHRIST) on upper limb function in children with cerebral palsy using motion analysis. METHOD: The subjects in this study included 19 children (10 males, 9 females, mean age=8.8 years) with cerebral palsy. The experimental group (n=10) received CHRIST and general rehabilitation therapy. The control group (n=9) received a home program as well as general rehabilitation therapy. Both groups received 30 sessions of CHRIST or home program training for 60 minutes per session 3 times a week during the 10-week period. The reaching movements were captured by a motion analysis system. Kinematic variables including movement time (MT), mean velocity (MV), normalized jerk score (NJS), mean angular velocity (MAV) and normalized jerk score of the shoulder, elbow and wrist joint with comfortable and fast speed were analyzed between groups and the pre-post training group. RESULTS: After pre- and post-training experimental group, MT, MV, NJS, MAV of shoulder, elbow, wrist and NJS of elbow and wrist improved significantlyin reaching movement of both comfortable and fast speed (p<0.05). However, After pre- and post-training control group, MV improved significantlyin reaching movement of only comfortable speed (p<0.05). Between two groups, MT and MAV of the elbow at comfortable speed and NJS of the elbow at fast speed were statisticallysignificant (p<0.05).
