RESUMO

The hippocampus is crucial for retrieval of contextual memories. The activation of a subpopulation of neurons in the dorsal CA1 (dCA1) of the hippocampus is required for memory retrieval. Given that hippocampal neurons exhibit distinct patterns of response during memory retrieval, the activity patterns of individual neurons or ensembles may be critically involved in memory retrieval. However, this relation has been unclear. To investigate this question, we used an in vivo microendoscope calcium imaging technique to optically record neuronal activity in the dCA1 of male and female mice. We observed that a portion of dCA1 neurons increased their responses to the learned context after contextual fear conditioning (FC), resulting in overall increase in response of neuronal population compared with simple context exposure. Such increased response was specific to the conditioned context as it disappeared in neutral context. The magnitude of increase in neuronal responses by FC was proportional to memory strength during retrieval. The increases in activity preferentially occurred during the putative sharp wave ripple events and were not simply because of animal's movement and immobility. At the ensemble level, synchronous cell activity patterns were associated with memory retrieval. Accordingly, when such patterns were more similar between conditioned and neutral context, animals displayed proportionally more similar level of freezing. Together, these results indicate that increase in responses of individual neurons and synchronous cell activity patterns in the dCA1 neuronal network are critically involved in representing a contextual memory recall.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Neurons in the dorsal CA1 of the hippocampus are crucial for memory retrieval. By using in vivo calcium imaging methods for recording neuronal activity, we demonstrate that dCA1 neurons increased their responses to the learned context specifically by FC and such changes correlated with memory strength during retrieval. Moreover, distinct synchronous cell activity patterns were formed by FC and involved in representing contextual memory retrieval. These findings reveal dynamic activity features of dCA1 neurons that are involved in contextual memory retrieval.

BACKGROUND: Angelica Gigas (Purple parsnip) is an important medicinal plant that is cultivated and utilized in Korea, Japan, and China. It contains bioactive substances especially coumarins with anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet aggregation, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, antimicrobial, anti-obesity, anti-oxidant, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective properties. This medicinal crop can be genetically improved, and the metabolites can be obtained by embryonic stem cells. In this context, we established the protoplast-to-plant regeneration methodology in Angelica gigas. RESULTS: In the present investigation, we isolated the protoplast from the embryogenic callus by applying methods that we have developed earlier and established protoplast cultures using Murashige and Skoog (MS) liquid medium and by embedding the protoplast in thin alginate layer (TAL) methods. We supplemented the culture medium with growth regulators namely 2,4-dichlorophenoxyaceticacid (2,4-D, 0, 0.75, 1.5 mg L- 1), kinetin (KN, 0, 0.5, and 1.0 mg L- 1) and phytosulfokine (PSK, 0, 50, 100 nM) to induce protoplast division, microcolony formation, and embryogenic callus regeneration. We applied central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) for the optimization of 2,4-D, KN, and PSK levels during protoplast division, micro-callus formation, and induction of embryogenic callus stages. The results revealed that 0.04 mg L- 1 2,4-D + 0.5 mg L- 1 KN + 2 nM PSK, 0.5 mg L- 1 2,4-D + 0.9 mg L- 1 KN and 90 nM PSK, and 1.5 mg L- 1 2,4-D and 1 mg L- 1 KN were optimum for protoplast division, micro-callus formation and induction embryogenic callus. MS basal semi-solid medium without growth regulators was good for the development of embryos and plant regeneration. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated successful protoplast culture, protoplast division, micro-callus formation, induction embryogenic callus, somatic embryogenesis, and plant regeneration in A. gigas. The methodologies developed here are quite useful for the genetic improvement of this important medicinal plant.

Secondary metabolites from plants are ubiquitous and have applications in medicines, food additives, scents, colorants, and natural pesticides. Biotechnological production of secondary metabolites that have economic benefits is an attractive alternative to conventional methods. Cell, adventitious, and hairy root suspension cultures are typically used to produce secondary metabolites. According to recent studies, somatic embryos in suspension culture are useful tools for the generation of secondary metabolites. Somatic embryogenesis is a mode of regeneration in several plant species. This review provides an update on the use of somatic embryogenesis in the production of valuable secondary metabolites. The factors influencing the generation of secondary metabolites using somatic embryos in suspension cultures, elicitation methods, and prospective applications are also discussed in this review.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in extracellular matrix remodeling through the degradation of extracellular matrix components and are also involved in the inflammatory response by regulating the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1ß. Dysregulation in the inflammatory response and changes in the extracellular matrix by MMPs are related to the development of various diseases including lung and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, numerous studies have been conducted to understand the role of MMPs in disease pathogenesis. MMPs are involved in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases through a dysregulation of the activity and expression of MMPs. In this review, we discuss the role of MMPs in infectious diseases and inflammatory responses. Furthermore, we present the potential of MMPs as therapeutic targets in infectious diseases.

Protoplasts are single cells isolated from tissues or organs and are considered a suitable system for cell studies in plants. Embryogenic cells are totipotent stem cells, but their regeneration ability decreases or becomes lost altogether with extension of the culture period. In this study, we isolated and cultured EC-derived protoplasts (EC-pts) from carrots and compared them with non-EC-derived protoplasts (NEC-pts) with respect to their totipotency. The protoplast isolation conditions were optimized, and the EC-pts and NEC-pts were characterized by their cell size and types. Both types of protoplasts were then embedded using the alginate layer (TAL) method, and the resulting EC-pt-TALs and NEC-pt-TALs were cultured for further regeneration. The expression of the EC-specific genes SERK1, WUS, BBM, LEC1, and DRN was analyzed to confirm whether EC identity was maintained after protoplast isolation. The protoplast isolation efficiency for EC-pts was 2.4-fold higher than for NEC-pts (3.5 × 106 protoplasts·g−1 FW). In the EC-pt group, protoplasts < 20 µm accounted for 58% of the total protoplasts, whereas in the NEC-pt group, small protoplasts accounted for only 26%. In protoplast culture, the number of protoplasts that divided was 2.6-fold higher for EC-pts than for NEC-pts (7.7 × 104 protoplasts·g−1 FW), with a high number of plants regenerated for EC-pt-TALs, whereas no plants were induced by NEC-pt-TAL. Five times more plants were regenerated from EC-pts than from ECs. Regarding the expression of EC-specific genes, WUS and SERK1 expression increased 12-fold, and LEC1 and BBM expression increased 3.6−6.4-fold in isolated protoplasts compared with ECs prior to protoplast isolation (control). These results reveal that the protoplast isolation process did not affect the embryogenic cell identity; rather, it increased the plant regeneration rate, confirming that EC-derived protoplast culture may be an efficient system for increasing the regeneration ability of old EC cultures through the elimination of old and inactivate cells. EC-derived protoplasts may also represent an efficient single-cell system for application in new breeding technologies such as genome editing.

An increase in hyperpolarized (HP) [1-13 C]lactate production has been suggested as a biomarker for cancer occurrence as well as for response monitoring of cancer treatment. Recently, the use of metformin has been suggested as an anticancer or adjuvant treatment. By regulating the cytosolic NAD+ /NADH redox state, metformin stimulates lactate production and increases the HP [1-13 C]lactate conversion rate in the kidney, liver, and heart. In general, increased HP [1-13 C]lactate is regarded as a sign of cancer occurrence or tumor growth. Thus, the relationship between the tumor suppression effect of metformin and the change in metabolism monitored by HP [1-13 C]pyruvate MRS in cancer treatment needs to be investigated. The present study was performed using a brain metastasis animal model with MDA-MB-231(BR)-Luc breast cancer cells. HP [1-13 C]pyruvate MRS, T2 -weighted MRI, and bioluminescence imaging were performed in groups treated with metformin or adjuvant metformin and radiation therapy. Metformin treatment alone did not display a tumor suppression effect, and the HP [1-13 C]lactate conversion rate increased. In radiation therapy, the HP [1-13 C]lactate conversion rate decreased with tumor suppression, with a p-value of 0.028. In the adjuvant metformin and radiation treatment, the tumor suppression effect increased, with a p-value of 0.001. However, the apparent HP [1-13 C]lactate conversion rate (Kpl ) was observed to be offset by two opposite effects: a decrease on radiation therapy and an increase caused by metformin treatment. Although HP [1-13 C]pyruvate MRS could not evaluate the tumor suppression effect of adjuvant metformin and radiation therapy due to the offset phenomenon, metabolic changes following only metformin pre-treatment could be monitored. Therefore, our results indicate that the interpretation of HP [1-13 C]pyruvate MRS for response monitoring of cancer treatment should be carried out with caution when metformin is used as an adjuvant cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: Influenza virus infection triggers acute cardiovascular events. Several studies have demonstrated that influenza A virus infection was associated with immune cell influx and increased production of inflammatory cytokines in the atherosclerotic plaque lesion, but the underlying mechanism for these findings is not clear. METHODS: We examined the expression levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) by influenza A virus infection in human cells using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, and human MMP-13 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In an animal study, protein expression in the plaque lesions of apolipoprotein E (ApoE)-deficient mice were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. RESULTS: We confirmed that MMP-13 was increased in influenza A virus-infected cells. In the aorta of infected ApoE-deficient mice, MMP-13 was increased at 3 days after infection. Immunohistochemical staining results suggested that collagen was degraded in the MMP-13 expression area and that macrophages were the main source of MMP-13 expression. Furthermore, the expression of MMP-13 was regulated by influenza A virus through activation of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we demonstrated that p38 MAPK-mediated MMP-13 expression by influenza A virus infection led to destabilization of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques in the artery.

Band-like transport behavior of H-doped transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) channels in field effect transistors (FET) is studied by conducting low-temperature electrical measurements, where MoTe2 , WSe2 , and MoS2 are chosen for channels. Doped with H atoms through atomic layer deposition, those channels show strong n-type conduction and their mobility increases without losing on-state current as the measurement temperature decreases. In contrast, the mobility of unintentionally (naturally) doped TMD FETs always drops at low temperatures whether they are p- or n-type. Density functional theory calculations show that H-doped MoTe2 , WSe2 , and MoS2 have Fermi levels above conduction band edge. It is thus concluded that the charge transport behavior in H-doped TMD channels is metallic showing band-like transport rather than thermal hopping. These results indicate that H-doped TMD FETs are practically useful even at low-temperature ranges.

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase complex-interacting multifunctional protein 1 (AIMP1)-derived peptide (AdP) has been developed as a cosmeceutical ingredient for skin anti-aging given its fibroblast-activating (FA) and melanocyte-inhibiting (MI) functions. However, a suitable strategy for the topical delivery of AdP was required due to its low-permeable properties. In this study, FA and MI domains of AdP (FA-AdP and MI-AdP, respectively) were determined by functional domain mapping, where the activities of several fragments of AdP on fibroblast and melanocyte were tested, and a hydrosol-based topical delivery system for these AdP fragments was prepared. The excipient composition of the hydrosol was optimized to maximize the viscosity and drying rate by using Box-Behnken design. The artificial skin deposition of FA-AdP-loaded hydrosol was evaluated using Keshary-Chien diffusion cells equipped with Strat-M membrane (STM). The quantification of the fluorescent dye-tagged FA-AdP in STM was carried out by near-infrared fluorescence imaging. The optimized hydrosol showed 127-fold higher peptide deposition in STM than free FA-AdP (p < 0.05). This work suggests that FA- and MI-AdP are active-domains for anti-wrinkle and whitening activities, respectively, and the hydrosol could be used as a promising cosmetic formulation for the delivery of AdPs to the skin.

The residual behavior of the systemic fungicide, metalaxyl, in Swiss chard cultivated at two different locations under greenhouse conditions was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with an ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UVD). Samples were randomly collected over 14 days and extracted using acetonitrile, partitioned using solid sodium chloride, and a solid-phase extraction (SPE) NH2 cartridge was used for cleanup. The linearity over a concentration range 0.05-50 mg/L was excellent with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9997. The recovery rate ranged from 77.05 to 88.92% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ≤ 10.74, and the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.0033 and 0.01 mg/kg, respectively. The initial (2 h after application) deposits were 4.69 and 5.90 mg/kg for sites 1 and 2, respectively, which increased to 4.95 and 6.57 mg/kg, respectively, one day post-application, owing to the systemic properties of the fungicide. The dissipation half-life was 5.3 and 6.0 days for sites 1 and 2, respectively. The pre-harvest residue limit (PHRL) suggested that if 55.38 and 47.23 mg/kg was applied 10 days before harvest or 33.28 and 30.73 mg/kg was applied 5 days before harvest (for sites 1 and 2, respectively) then the concentration will fall below the maximum residue limit (MRL = 20.0 mg/kg) at the time of harvest. The dietary risk assessment, estimated as hazard quotient (RQ%), indicate that metalaxyl can be safely used in/on Swiss chard, with no hazardous effects expected for consumers.

This study aimed at quantifying the residual amount of azoxystrobin in Swiss chard samples grown under greenhouse conditions at two different locations (Gwangju and Naju, Republic of Korea). Samples were extracted with acetonitrile, separated by salting out, and subjected to purification by using solid-phase extraction. The analyte was identified using liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection. The linearity of the calibration range was excellent with coefficient of determination 1.00. Recovery at three different spiking levels (0.1, 0.5, and 4 mg/kg) ranged between 82.89 and 109.46% with relative standard deviation <3. The limit of quantification, 0.01 mg/kg, was considerably much lower than the maximum residue limit (50 mg/kg) set by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The developed methodology was successfully used for field-treated leaves, which were collected randomly at 0-14 days following azoxystrobin application. The rate of disappearance in/on Swiss chard was ascribed to first-order kinetics with a half-life of 8 and 5 days, in leaves grown in Gwangju and Naju greenhouses, respectively. Risk assessments revealed that the acceptable daily intake percentage is substantially below the risk level of consumption at day 0 (in both areas), thus encouraging its safe consumption.

The dissipation pattern of sulfoxaflor in Asian pear cultivated in an open field conditions and in oriental melon grown under plastic house conditions was each studied in two different locations. Residues in field-treated samples were determined using liquid chromatography coupled with an ultraviolet detector and confirmed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. A calibration curve for sulfoxaflor was linear over the concentration range 0.1-5.0 mg/L, with a coefficient of determination of 0.9999. The limits of detection and quantification (LOQ) were 0.007 and 0.02 mg/kg, respectively. Recoveries at three fortification levels (LOQ, 10 × LOQ and maximum residue limit) ranged from 70.5 to 86.2%, with a relative standard deviation ≤5.8%. The dissipation half-lives were 10.8 and 7.9 days in pear and 5.4 and 5.9 days in oriental melon, at sites 1 and 2, respectively. Based on a pre-harvest residue limit curve, it was predicted that, if the residues at 10 days before harvest in Asian pear are <0.54/0.61 mg/kg and those in oriental melon are <1.43/1.26 mg/kg, then the residue level will be below the maximum residue limit at harvest. Risk assessment at zero days showed a percentage acceptable daily intake of 10.80% in Asian pear and 1.77 and 1.55% in oriental melon, for sites 1 and 2, respectively. These values indicate that the fruits are safe for consumption.

Residue analysis of dimethomorph in Swiss chard cultivated at two different locations under greenhouse conditions was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection and confirmed by tandem mass spectrometry. The randomly collected samples (over 14 days) were extracted with acetonitrile and purified using a Florisil solid-phase extraction cartridge. Linearity over a concentration range of 0.05-50.0 mg/L had an excellent coefficient of determination of 0.9996. Recovery rate ranged from 82.98 to 95.43% with relative standard deviations ≤5.12% and limits of detection and quantification of 0.003 and 0.01 mg/kg, respectively. The initial deposits [day 0 (2 h post-application)] were considerably lower (7.57 and 8.55 mg/kg for sites 1 and 2, respectively) than the maximum residue limit (30 mg/kg) set by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The dissipation half-life was approximately the same, being 5.0 and 5.1 days for sites 1 and 2, respectively. Risk assessment estimated as acceptable daily intake revealed a value of 0.084 or 0.094% (day 0) and 0.014% (10 days post-application), for sites 1 and 2, respectively. The values indicated that dimethomorph can be safely used on Swiss chard, with no hazardous effects expected for Korean consumers.

Since 2013, the Hospital-based Influenza Morbidity and Mortality (HIMM) surveillance system began a H7N9 influenza surveillance scheme for returning travelers in addition to pre-existing emergency room (ER)-based influenza-like illness (ILI) surveillance and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) surveillance. Although limited to eastern China, avian A/H7N9 influenza virus is considered to have the highest pandemic potential among currently circulating influenza viruses. During the study period between October 1st, 2013 and April 30th, 2016, 11 cases presented with ILI within seven days of travel return. These patients visited China, Hong Kong, or neighboring Southeast Asian countries, but none of them visited a livestock market. Seasonal influenza virus (54.5%, 6 among 11) was the most common cause of ILI among returning travelers, and avian A/H7N9 influenza virus was not detected during the study period.

PURPOSE: Bleomycin-coated microneedles were devised for delivery of bleomycin into the sub-epidermal skin layer for the treatment of warts in order to provide patient convenience and reduce patient pain and fear. METHOD: Poly-lactic-acid (L-PLA) microneedles were fabricated by a molding process and then the tips were partially coated using a dip-coating method based on a microstructure well. The mechanical strength of the pre-coated polymer microneedles was observed by inserting them in porcine foot and back skin. The holes were stained with trypan blue and the mechanical failure of the microneedles was investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The initial distribution of a model drug using microneedles was compared with distribution by intralesional injection. The amount of drug leaked below the skin using microneedles was measured and compared with that leaked by intralesional injection. The pharmacokinetic properties of bleomycin-coated microneedles were studied. The bleomycin remaining on the coated microneedles after the in vivo pharmacokinetic study was measured. RESULTS: Bleomycin was successfully coated on the tips of L-PLA microneedles. More than 80% of the bleomycin dissolved into the skin in vitro within 15 min. L-PLA microneedles possessed sufficient mechanical strength to penetrate skin with a thick stratum corneum. Compared to intralesional injection, tip-coated microneedles were more effective in distributing a drug into the sub-epidermal skin layer. A pharmacokinetic study of bleomycin-coated microneedles showed 50 min of Tmax. CONCLUSIONS: Bleomycin-coated microneedles appeared to be a convenient and painless alternative to conventional intralesional injection of bleomycin. The microneedles delivered bleomycin into the targeted dermal layer regardless of body site. Bleomycin-coated microneedles therefore provide a suitable method for the treatment of warts.

This study was undertaken to develop and validate a single multiresidue method for the monitoring of ten multiclass emerging contaminants, viz. ceftiofur, clopidol, florfenicol, monensin, salinomycin, sulfamethazine, sulfathiazole, sulfamethoxazole, tiamulin, and tylosin in agricultural soil. Samples were extracted using an acetate-buffered, modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method followed by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometric analysis in positive ion mode. Separation on an Eclipse Plus C18 column was conducted in gradient elution mode using a mobile phase of methanol (A) and distilled water (B), each containing 0.1% formic acid and 5 mM ammonium formate. The linearity of the matrix-matched calibrations, expressed as determination coefficients, was good, with R2 ≥ 0.9908. The limits of quantification were in the range 0.05-10 µg/kg. Blank soil samples spiked with 4 × and 20 × the limit of quantification provided recovery rates of 60.2-120.3% (except sulfamethoxazole spiked at 4 × the limit of quantification, which gave 131.9%) with a relative standard deviation < 13% (except clopidol spiked at 20 × the limit of quantification, which gave 25.2%). This method was successfully applied to the monitoring of 51 field-incurred agricultural loamy-sand soil samples collected from 17 provincial areas throughout the Korean Peninsula. The detected and quantified drugs were clopidol (≤ 4.8 µg/kg), sulfathiazole (≤ 7.7 µg/kg), sulfamethazine (≤ 6.6 µg/kg), tiamulin (≤ 10.0 µg/kg), and tylosin (≤ 5.3 µg/kg). The developed method is simple and versatile, and can be used to monitor various classes of veterinary drugs in soil.

A high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection was used to estimate the disappearance rates as well as the pre-harvest residue limits of pyriofenone in oriental melon (Cucumis melo var. makuwa) grown under greenhouse conditions in two different locations (A and B) in Seongju, Republic of Korea. The identity of the compound in standard solution and representative field incurred samples was confirmed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The method was validated in terms of linearity, limits of detection and quantification, accuracy (expressed as recovery) and precision (expressed as relative standard deviation) for accurate and precise quantitation. Notably, the residual levels of field incurred samples collected over days 0-10 post-application were below the maximum residue level (0.2 mg/kg) established by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Site A showed lower residue levels and a higher decline rate than site B, which might be attributed to seasonal variation (high temperature) and increased metabolic and enzyme profiling in the mature fruits. The half-lives were similar, 4.9 and 4.3 days, at sites A and B, respectively. Using the pre-harvest residue limit, we predicted the residue amounts at 10 and 5 days before harvest, which resulted in concentrations lower than the provisional maximum residue level at harvest time.

Amisulbrom formulated as suspension concentrate was applied at the rate recommended for Korean melon to determine the dissipation pattern (at two different sites), the pre-harvest residue limit (PHRL), and risk assessments. Samples collected over 10 days were extracted using liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and cleaned up with solid-phase extraction (SPE) Florisil cartridge. Residual concentrations were determined using liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (LC-UVD) and confirmed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The standard showed good instrument response linearity with a correlation coefficient (R 2) = 0.9999, and the recovery ranged from 87.5 to 93.7%. The dissipation half-life calculated from two different sites were found to be 7.0 and 8.8 days for sites 1 and 2, respectively. A PHRL graph constructed from the data indicated that if the residue levels were less than 0.55-0.59 mg/kg 3 days before harvest or less than 0.61-0.74 mg/kg 7 days before harvest, then they would be lower than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) at harvest. Risk assessments showed that the risk quotient (RQ) was 4.39-3.47% at 0 day, declined to 1.53-1.63% at 10 days. Therefore, the current data indicate that the amisulbrom can be applied safely to Korean melon; hence, it is unlikely to induce adverse health effects in consumers.

An analytical method to detect phorate and its metabolites, including phorate sulfone, phorate sulfoxide, phoratoxon, phoratoxon sulfone, and phoratoxon sulfoxide, in porcine and chicken muscles and table eggs was developed and validated. Extraction was performed using a quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method and analysis was conducted using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Matrix-matched calibrations were linear over the tested concentrations, with determination coefficient ≥ 0.995 for all tested analytes in the different matrices. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.001 and 0.004 mg/kg, respectively. The calculated recovery rates at three fortification levels were satisfactory, with values between 74.22 and 119.89% and relative standard deviations < 10%. The method was applied successfully to commercial samples collected from locations throughout the Korean Peninsula, and none of them showed any traces of the tested analytes. Overall, the developed method is simple and versatile, and can be used for monitoring phorate and its metabolites in animal products rich in protein and fat.

A simultaneous determination method using solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was developed to detect and quantify the presence of seven multiclass veterinary antibiotics (13 compounds in total) in surface water samples, which included the effluents of livestock wastewater and sewage treatment plants, as well as the reservoir drainage areas from dense animal farms. The pH of all water samples was adjusted to 2 or 6 before solid-phase extraction using Oasis HLB cartridges. The developed method was fully validated in terms of linearity, method detection limit, method quantitation limit, accuracy, and precision. The linearity of all tested drugs was good, with R2 determination coefficients ≥ 0.9931. The method detection limits and method quantitation limits were 0.1-74.3 and 0.5-236.6 ng/L, respectively. Accuracy and precision values were 71-120 and 1-17%, respectively. The determination method was successfully applied for monitoring water samples obtained from the Yeongsan River in 2015. The most frequently detected antibiotics were lincomycin (96%), sulfamethazine (90%), sulfamethoxazole (88%), and sulfathiazole (50%); the maximum concentrations of which were 398.9, 1151.3, 533.1, and 307.4 ng/L, respectively. Overall, the greatest numbers and concentrations of detected antibiotics were found in samples from the effluents of livestock wastewater, sewage treatment plants, and reservoir drainage areas. Diverse veterinary antibiotics were present, and their presence was dependent upon the commercial sales and environmental properties of the analytes, the geographical positions of the sampling points, and the origin of the water.
