RESUMO

Metal-carbon composites are extensively utilized as electrochemical catalysts but face critical challenges in mass production and stability. We report a scalable manufacturing process for ruthenium surface-embedded fabric electrocatalysts (Ru-SFECs) via conventional fiber/fabric manufacturing. Ru-SFECs have excellent catalytic activity and stability toward the hydrogen evolution reaction, exhibiting a low overpotential of 11.9 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in an alkaline solution (1.0 M aq KOH solution) with only a slight overpotential increment (6.5%) after 10,000 cycles, whereas under identical conditions, that of commercial Pt/C increases 6-fold (from 1.3 to 7.8 mV). Using semipilot-scale equipment, a protocol is optimized for fabricating continuous self-supported electrocatalytic electrodes. Tailoring the fiber processing parameters (tension and temperature) can optimize the structural development, thereby achieving good catalytic performance and mechanical integrity. These findings underscore the significance of self-supporting catalysts, offering a general framework for stable, binder-free electrocatalytic electrode design.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Although the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing in the aging population, the clinical relevance of the CKD definition (glomerular filtration rate [GFR] < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2) in older populations remains debatable. We investigated the clinical outcomes in older populations with mildly to moderately decreased GFR (45-59 ml/min/1.73 m2, CKD stage 3A). METHODS: A total of 7,789,242 participants aged ≥ 40 years with estimated GFR (eGFR) ≥ 45 ml/min/1.73 m2 in national health screening examination from 2012 to 2017 were included in this retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. The main outcomes included kidney failure, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and all-cause death. Cox regression hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios. RESULTS: The proportion of participants with eGFR 45-59 ml/min/1.73 m2 was 10.0% and 16.3% in the old (65-74 years) and very old (75 ≥ years) groups, respectively. Mildly to moderately decreased eGFR was associated with a higher risk of kidney failure, CVD, and all-cause death compared with eGFR 60-89 ml/min/1.73 m2 in the old and very old groups, regardless of proteinuria (adjusted hazard ratio [95% confidence interval] in the very old group without proteinuria: kidney failure 3.048 [2.495-3.722], CVD 1.103 [1.066-1.142], and all-cause death 1.172 [1.144-1.201]). CONCLUSION: Mildly to moderately decreased eGFR was associated with an increased risk of kidney failure, CVD, and all-cause death in the older population, regardless of proteinuria, suggesting the importance of appropriate monitoring and management in this population.

RESUMO

We aimed to examine the association between dietary isoflavone intake and the risk of breast cancer recurrence and summarize evidence on the role of dietary isoflavone intake in breast cancer prognosis. This prospective study included 592 breast cancer survivors who completed a dietary assessment. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. Of the studies published until May 31, 2023, that were searched in PUBMED and EMBASE databases, 14 studies were selected. Adjusted HRs were combined using fixed- or random-effects models. During the median follow-up of 4.3 years, 47 recurrences were identified. The HR (95% CI) for recurrence comparing the highest versus the lowest tertile of isoflavones intake was 1.29 (0.60-2.78). In a meta-analysis of previously published data and ours, dietary isoflavone intake was associated with a better breast cancer prognosis. The combined HRs (95% CIs) comparing the extreme categories were 0.81 (0.67-0.98) for recurrence and 0.85 (0.76-0.96) for all-cause mortality. A nonlinear inverse association was observed between isoflavone intake and the risk of recurrence and all-cause mortality. Our study suggests that dietary isoflavone intake is associated with a favorable prognosis in breast cancer survivors and warrants further investigation.

RESUMO

Kidney transplant recipients are at high risk for fractures, primarily due to post-transplant bone disease. This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, including 10 083 kidney transplant recipients examined from 2009 to 2017. We assessed fracture incidence, emphasizing vertebral and hip fractures, and the association of physical activity and traditional risk factors with fracture risk. Kidney transplant recipients were categorized into three groups according to physical activity levels: non-activity, metabolic equivalent of task (MET) 1-499, and MET ≥500. Physical activity was associated with a decreased risk of all types of fractures: any (MET 1-499: adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) .75; 95% confidence interval (CI) .62-.92, MET ≥500: aHR .84; 95% CI .70-1.00), vertebral (MET 1-499: aHR .69; 95% CI .49-.98, MET ≥500: aHR .67; 95% CI .49-.91), and hip (MET 1-499: aHR .43; 95% CI .23-.81) fractures. Additionally, older age, female sex, and diabetes were associated with an increased fracture risk. The assessment of physical activity and traditional risk factors could improve fracture risk prediction. Our findings emphasize the need for further research to establish optimal physical activity recommendations for fracture prevention in kidney transplant recipients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As individuals living with HIV age, they often experience both physical and psychological symptoms-along with potential reductions in social support-which can significantly affect their health-related quality of life (HRQOL)-a crucial measure in HIV care. However, research exploring the potential predictive roles of social support and symptom experiences in HRQOL among older people living with HIV (PLWH) is limited. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate relationships between social support, symptom experiences, and HRQOL in older adults with HIV. METHODS: Older adults with HIV aged ≥50 years completed surveys on demographic and HIV-related characteristics, social support, four symptoms, and HRQOL. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were used to determine predictors for six HRQOL domains. RESULTS: Among the 141 PLWH, significant associations were found between fatigue and health perceptions, physical functioning, and role functioning. Sleep disturbance was a significant predictor of health perceptions and social functioning. Anxiety displayed associations with physical functioning, role functioning, mental health, and pain. Depression was linked to health perceptions and mental health aspects of HRQOL. Notably, social support was not associated with any HRQOL domains. DISCUSSION: These findings underscore the importance of assessing a range of common symptoms to enhance HRQOL among older adults living with HIV, necessitating tailored symptom management strategies for this growing population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fatigue, a prevalent complex symptom among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is considered an important clinical indicator of disease severity. However, the underlying mechanisms of COPD-related fatigue are not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: This analysis explored the relationships between peripheral inflammatory markers and COPD-related fatigue in people with moderate to severe COPD. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a longitudinal observational study of individuals with COPD examining the biological causes and functional consequences of depression. The data used in this study were collected at baseline. Systemic inflammation markers included C-reactive protein (CRP) and three pro-inflammatory cytokines consisting of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α. COPD-related fatigue was self-reported using the Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire. Covariates included age; gender; smoking status; disease severity; symptoms of depression, anxiety, and pain; and social support. Multivariable linear regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS: The sample included 300 adults living with COPD; 80% were male, and the average age was 67.6 years. Modest correlations were found between two systemic inflammatory markers (CRP and IL-8) and COPD-related fatigue. CRP was the only inflammatory marker significantly associated with fatigue symptoms after adjusting for covariates in multivariable analyses. Depression, pain, and education level were also significant predictors of COPD-related fatigue. DISCUSSION: The findings suggest that altered immune response based on CRP may contribute to COPD-related fatigue. Management of depression and pain may work as an effective treatment strategy for COPD-related fatigue. Further longitudinal studies with a broader range of inflammatory markers and multidimensional measures of fatigue symptoms are warranted.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Living with two or more chronic conditions simultaneously-known as multimorbidity-has become increasingly prevalent as the aging population continues to grow. However, the factors that influence the development of multimorbidity are still not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of multimorbidity among U.S. adults 50 years and older and identify associated factors with multimorbidity. METHODS: We used data from four cycles from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2018) to examine the associations between social determinants of health and multimorbidity among American adults aged 50 years and older. A set of variables on socioeconomic status and health behaviors was chosen based on the social determinants of health conceptual framework developed by the World Health Organization. In our study, 4,552 participants were included. All analyses were accounted for a complex survey design and the use of survey weights. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the associated factors with multimorbidity. RESULTS: The average age was 63.1 years, and 52.9% were female. The average number of chronic conditions was 2.27. The prevalence of multimorbidity was 63.8%, with high cholesterol and hypertension being the most prevalent conditions. In the adjusted model, age, gender, household income, citizenship status, health insurance, healthcare access, body mass index, and smoking status were found to be associated with living with multimorbidity. DISCUSSION: Our results indicate that continued efforts aimed at promoting smoking cessation and maintaining a healthy weight will be beneficial in preventing the onset of chronic conditions. Additional research is warranted to gain a deeper understanding of the interrelationships between gender, race/ethnicity, household income, citizenship status, health insurance, and healthcare access as social determinants of health in the context of multimorbidity. Further research will help us develop targeted interventions and policies to address disparities and improve health outcomes for individuals with multimorbidity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate changes in the age at menarche in Asian populations. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: We included 548,830 women from six countries in Asia. The data were sourced from 20 cohorts participating in the Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC) and two additional cohort studies: Japan Multi-institutional Collaborative Cohorts (J-MICC), and Japan Nurse Health Study (JNHS) with data on age at menarche. Joinpoint regression was used to evaluate changes in age at menarche by birth year and by country. RESULTS: The study includes data from cohorts in six Asian countries namely, China, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. Birth cohorts ranged from 1873 to 1995. The mean age of menarche was 14.0 years with a standard deviation (SD) of 1.4 years, ranged from 12.6 to 15.5 years. Over 100 years age at menarche showed an overall decrease in all six countries. China showed a mixed pattern of decrease, increase, and subsequent decrease from 1926 to 1960. Iran and Malaysia experienced a sharp decline between about 1985 and 1990, with APC values of -4.48 and -1.24, respectively, while Japan, South Korea, and Singapore exhibited a nearly linear decline since the 1980s, notably with an APC of -3.41 in Singapore from 1993 to 1995. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, we observed a declining age at menarche, while the pace of the change differed by country. Additional long-term observation is needed to examine the contributing factors of differences in trend across Asian countries. The study could serve as a tool to strengthen global health campaigns.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diastolic dysfunction with left ventricular hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis is an important characteristic of uremic cardiomyopathy in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Few studies explored the relationship between changes in diastolic dysfunction and the risk of mortality or cardiovascular outcome in patients with ESKD. We investigated the clinical impact of diastolic dysfunction and atrial fibrillation (AF) on patients starting hemodialysis (HD). METHODS: A total of 718 patients who started HD between 2010 and 2020 were included. We classified patients according to the pre- and post-HD diastolic dysfunction grades (DDG) evaluated by echocardiography. Patients with AF were classified separately. The primary outcome was a composite outcome of all-cause mortality and cardiac complication. RESULTS: The median age was 63 years, and 61.4% were male. Patients were divided into four groups based on pre-HD echocardiography findings. After initiating HD, the patients were classified according to changes in DDG and AF. Composite outcomes were significantly higher in the pre-HD AF groups. However, after adjusting for age and history of ischemic heart disease, pre-HD AF did not affect the composite outcomes. Patients with normal post-HD diastolic function had better outcomes than those with diastolic dysfunction or AF. Furthermore, the deterioration of diastolic dysfunction after HD was associated with an increased risk of composite outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The deterioration of diastolic dysfunction and newly development of AF after initiating HD were identified as risk factors for mortality and cardiac complications, supporting the clinical importance of the appropriate management of diastolic dysfunction and AF in patients with ESKD.

RESUMO

Given the increased significance of electric vehicles in recent years, this study aimed to develop a novel form of direct yaw-moment control (DYC) to enhance the driving stability of four-wheel independent drive (4WID) electric vehicles. Specifically, this study developed an innovative non-singular fast terminal sliding mode control (NFTSMC) method that integrates NFTSM and a fast-reaching control law. Moreover, this study employed a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) to approximate both the entire system model and uncertain components, thereby reducing the computational load associated with a complex system model and augmenting the overall control performance. Using the aforementioned factors, the optimal additional yaw moment to ensure the lateral stability of a vehicle is determined. To generate the additional yaw moment, we introduce a real-time optimal torque distribution method based on the vertical load ratio. The stability of the proposed approach is comprehensively verified using the Lyapunov theory. Lastly, the validity of the proposed DYC system is confirmed by simulation tests involving step and sinusoidal inputs conducted using Matlab/Simulink and CarSim software. Compared to conventional sliding mode control (SMC) and NFTSMC methods, the proposed approach showed improvements in yaw rate tracking accuracy for all scenarios, along with a significant reduction in the chattering phenomenon in control torques.

RESUMO

As the global population ages, the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's is rapidly rising. These diseases present a significant public health challenge, as they severely impair cognitive and motor functions, ultimately leading to a substantial reduction in quality of life and placing a heavy burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Although several therapeutic agents have been developed to manage the symptoms of these diseases, their effectiveness is often limited, and there remains an urgent need for preventive strategies. Growing evidence indicates that bioactive compounds from natural products possess neuroprotective properties through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, modulating key pathways such as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor-tropomyosin receptor kinase B-cAMP response element-binding protein (BDNF-TrkB-CREB), which are crucial for neuronal survival. These compounds may also reduce amyloid-beta and tau pathology, as well as enhance cholinergic neurotransmission by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity. By targeting oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration, natural products offer a promising approach for both prevention and treatment. These findings suggest that natural products may be promising for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases. This review aims to explore the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, the limitations of current therapies, and the potential role of natural products as therapeutic agents.

RESUMO

Dietary supplementation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) has been found to be beneficial in rodent rheumatoid arthritis models and human trials. However, the molecular targets of n-3 PUFAs and their beneficial effects on rheumatoid arthritis are under-researched. Free fatty acid receptor 4 (FFA4, also known as GPR120) is a receptor for n-3 PUFA. We aim to investigate whether FFA4 activation reduces collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis (CIA) by using an FFA4 agonist, compound A (CpdA), in combination with DBA-1J Ffa4 gene wild-type (WT) and Ffa4 gene knock-out (KO) mice. CIA induced an increase in the arthritis score, foot edema, synovial hyperplasia, pannus formation, proteoglycan loss, cartilage damage, and bone erosion, whereas the administration of CpdA significantly suppressed those increases in Ffa4 WT mice but not Ffa4 gene KO mice. CIA increased mRNA expression levels of pro-inflammatory Th1/Th17 cytokines, whereas CpdA significantly suppressed those increases in Ffa4 WT mice but not Ffa4 gene KO mice. CIA induced an imbalance between Th1/Th17 and Treg cells, whereas CpdA rebalanced them in spleens from Ffa4 WT mice but not Ffa4 gene KO mice. In SW982 synovial cells, CpdA reduced the LPS-induced increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine levels. In summary, the present results suggest that the activation of FFA4 in immune and synovial cells could suppress the characteristics of rheumatoid arthritis and be an adjuvant therapy.

RESUMO

Nitro-conjugated linoleic acid (NO2-CLA) has been observed to manifest salutary signaling responses, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Here, the authors have explored the influence and underlying mechanisms of NO2-CLA on the proinflammatory reaction of murine macrophages that were challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) derived from Prevotella intermedia, a putative periodontopathic bacterium. Treatment of LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells with NO2-CLA notably dampened the secretion of iNOS-derived NO, IL-1ß and IL-6 as well as their gene expressions and significantly enhanced the markers for M2 macrophage polarization. NO2-CLA promoted the HO-1 expression in cells challenged with LPS, and tin protoporphyrin IX, an HO-1 inhibitor, significantly reversed the NO2-CLA-mediated attenuation of NO secretion, but not IL-1ß or IL-6. We found that cells treated with NO2-CLA significantly increased mRNA expression of PPAR-γ compared to control cells, and NO2-CLA significantly reverted the decrease in PPAR-γ mRNA caused by LPS. Nonetheless, antagonists to PPAR-γ were unable to reverse the NO2-CLA-mediated suppression of inflammatory mediators. In addition, NO2-CLA did not alter the p38 and JNK activation elicited by LPS. Both NF-κB reporter activity and IκB-α degradation caused by LPS were notably diminished by NO2-CLA. NO2-CLA was observed to interrupt the nuclear translocation and DNA binding of p50 subunits caused by LPS with no obvious alterations in p65 subunits. Further, NO2-CLA attenuated the phosphorylation of STAT1/3 elicited in response to LPS. We propose that NO2-CLA could be considered as a possible strategy for the therapy of periodontal disease, although additional researches are certainly required to confirm this.

RESUMO

Transient receptor potential channels canonical 1 and 4 (TRPC1 and TRPC4) are proteins belonging to the same TRPC channel family, and the two are known to form a heterotetrameric channel. TRPC4 can form a homotetrameric, nonselective cation channel by itself, but the involvement of the TRPC1 subunit changes several major characteristics of the channel. In this study, we focused on the pore region (selectivity filter, pore helix, and S6 helix) of TRPC1 and TRPC4 as a determinant of the identity and characteristics of a heteromeric TRPC1/4 channel: decreased calcium permeability of the channel and outward-rectifying current-voltage (I-V) curve. Mutants and chimeras of the pore residues were created, and their currents were recorded using whole cell patch clamp. The lower gate mutants of TRPC4 exhibited diminished calcium permeability as measured by GCaMP6 fluorescence. Also, chimeric channels substituting the pore region of TRPC1 to TRPC4 were made to locate the pore region that is critical in the production of an outward-rectifying I-V curve characteristic of TRPC1/4 heteromeric channels.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Heteromer research has been a challenging field due to lack of structural studies. Using chimeras and single mutants, we present evidence that the pore region of TRPC1/4 heteromer contributes to determining the channel's characteristics such as calcium permeability, I-V curve, and conductance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Brain metastasis is a common complication among patients with lung cancer, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the pathogenesis of brain metastasis in lung cancer. METHODS: We established highly colonizing metastatic lung cancer cells, A549-M2, through multiple implantations of A549 human lung cancer cells in the carotid artery of athymic nude mice. RESULTS: Compared to parental cells (M0), M2 cells demonstrated slower growth in culture plates and soft agar, as well as lower motility and higher adhesion, key characteristics of mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET). Further analysis revealed that M2 cells exhibited decreased expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers, including ZEB1 and Vimentin. M2 cells also demonstrated reduced invasiveness in co-culture systems. RNA sequencing and gene set enrichment analysis confirmed that M2 cells underwent MET. Intriguingly, depletion of Noggin, a BMP antagonist, was observed in M2 cells, and replenishment of Noggin restored suppressed migration and invasion of M2 cells. In addition, Noggin knockdown in control M0 cells promoted cell attachment and suppressed cell migration, suggesting that Noggin reduction during brain colonization causes inhibition of migration and invasion of metastatic lung cancer cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that lung cancer cells undergo MET and lose their motility and invasiveness during brain metastatic colonization, which is dependent on Noggin.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The nephrotoxicity of bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor, has not yet been elucidated, although tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) associated with multiple myeloma (MM) has been reported to increase after introduction of the drug. This study compared the incidence and risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) and TLS in patients with MM after bortezomib-based chemotherapy to investigate drug-related nephrotoxicity. METHODS: From 2006 to 2017, 276 patients who underwent a first cycle of bortezomib-based chemotherapy for MM were identified in a single tertiary hospital. Laboratory TLS was defined according to the Cairo-Bishop definition. Development of AKI was assessed by AKI Network criteria within 7 days of the first chemotherapy. RESULTS: The median (interquartile range) age was 65 (56-72) years, and baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 61.3 (34.1-89.1) mL/min/1.73 m2. The incidences of AKI and laboratory TLS were 17% (n = 47) and 13% (n = 36), respectively. Ten (3.6%) subjects met both AKI and TLS criteria. Multivariate analyses showed that lower eGFR category [30-59, odds ratio (OR) 3.005 (95% confidence interval 1.163-7.976); 15-29, OR 4.225 (1.183-15.000); <15, OR 16.154 (3.831-70.920) vs ≥60, P < .001], lower serum albumin level [per 1 increase, OR 0.479 (0.256-0.871), P = .018], renal amyloidosis [OR 13.039 (4.108-44.041), P < .001] and use of acyclovir during bortezomib treatment [OR 3.689 (1.133-14.469), P = .042] were predictors of AKI. MM stages and ß-2-microglobulin were not associated with increased risk of AKI. Regarding laboratory TLS, MM stage and ß-2-microglobulin were higher in those with TLS than in others. In multivariate analyses, ß-2-microglobulin level [OR 1.204 (1.005-1.461), P = .038] and absence of high-risk chromosome abnormalities [OR 0.143 (0.022-0.588), P = .016] were associated with higher risk of TLS. CONCLUSIONS: Development of AKI was often observed in the absence of TLS in patients with MM after treatment with bortezomib. In addition, the risk factors for AKI and TLS varied widely. These findings indicate the potential nephrotoxicity of bortezomib irrespective of TLS in patients with decreased kidney function.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological findings on the association between soybean product consumption and gastric cancer risk remain inconsistent. We evaluated the relationship between soybean product consumption and the risk of gastric cancer in a prospective cohort study in Korea. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included a total of 139,267 participants aged 40-69 years from the Health Examinees-Gem (HEXA-G) study between 2004 and 2013. Information on cancer diagnosis was retrieved from the Korea Central Cancer Registry until 31 December 2018. Multivariate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% of confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of gastric cancer according to the consumption of soybean products were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS: A total of 767 incident cases of gastric cancer occurred over an average follow-up period of 9.21 years. We found that men who consumed two servings per week had 37% lower risk of gastric cancer compared with who consume those who almost never consumed (HR for tofu consumption of more than two servings/week vs. almost never consumed was 0.63 (95% CI 0.45, 0.89); p for trend = 0.04). Among men with a BMI of less than 25 kg/m2, increased consumption of soybean paste (p for trend = 0.02) and tofu (HR 0.51 (95% CI 0.32, 0.82 for more than two servings/week vs. almost never consumed); p for trend = 0.01) was associated with decreased risk of gastric cancer. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that a high consumption of soybean products has a protective effect against gastric cancer.

RESUMO

The catalytic ozonation of methylethylketone (MEK) was performed at the room temperature (25 °C) using the synthesized Mn and Cu-loaded zeolite (ZSM-5, SiO2/Al2O3 = 80) catalysts. The ZSM-5 zeolite was used as a porous support material due to the large surface area and high capacity for adsorption of volatile organic compounds. Since Mn and Cu-loaded zeolite catalysts were effective for the catalytic ozonation of VOCs such as MEK, according to the loaded concentration of Mn and Cu, there are four types of metal loaded ZSM5 catalysts synthesized [5 wt% Mn/ZSM-5, 5 wt% Cu/ZSM-5, 5 wt% Mn-1 wt% Cu/ZSM-5 (5Mn1CuZSM), and 5 wt% Cu-1 wt% Mn/ZSM-5]. The catalytic efficiency for the removal of MEK and ozonation using the different catalysts was also studied. Based on various experimental analysis processes, the characteristics of the synthesized catalysts were explored and the removal efficiencies of MEK and O3 together with the COx concentration generated from the destruction of MEK and O3 were explored. The results for the decomposition of MEK and O3 at the room temperature indicated that the Mn dominant ZSM-5 catalysts showed better efficiency for the conversion of MEK and O3. The 5 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 outweighed the rest of them for the removal of MEK while the 5Mn1CuZSM showed the best catalytic reactivity for the conversion of O3 and the CO2 selectivity. It was ascertained that during the reaction time of catalyst and reactants of 120 min the Mn dominantly deposited bimetallic catalyst, 5Mn1CuZSM, was determined as the most effective for the removal of MEK and O3 due to the high capability of production of Mn3+ species and more available adsorbed oxygen sites compared to the other catalysts. Finally, the durability measurement for the 5Mn1CuZSM catalyst was performed together with the produced CO and CO2 concentration for 420 min.

RESUMO

To remove harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including 2-butanone (methyl ethyl ketone, MEK) emitted from various industrial plants is very important for the clean air. Also, it is worthwhile to recycle porous spent fluid catalytic cracking (SFCC) catalysts from various petroleum refineries in terms of reducing industrial waste and the reuse of discharged resources. Therefore, Mn and Mn-Cu added SFCC (Mn/SFCC and Mn-Cu/SFCC) catalysts were prepared to compare their catalytic efficiencies together with the SFCC catalyst in the ozonation of 2-butanone. Since the SFCC-based catalysts have a structure similar to that of zeolite Y (Y), the Mn-loaded zeolite Y catalyst (Mn/Y) was also prepared to compare its activity for the removal of 2-butanone and ozone to that of the SFCC-based ones at room temperature. Among the five catalysts of this study (Y, Mn/Y, SFCC, Mn/SFCC, and Mn-Cu/SFCC), the Mn-Cu/SFCC and Mn/SFCC catalysts showed the better catalytic decomposition activity than the others. The increased distributions of the Mn3+ species and the Ovacancy sites in Mn/SFCC and Mn-Cu/SFCC catalysts which could supply more available active sites for the 2-butanone and ozone removal would enhance the catalytic activity of them.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The potential role of dietary branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) in metabolic health, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, is evolving, and it is yet to be understood if dietary BCAA intakes are associated with plasma lipid profiles or dyslipidaemia. This study tested the association of dietary BCAA intakes with plasma lipid profiles and dyslipidaemia among Filipino women in Korea. METHODS: Energy-adjusted dietary BCAA intakes (isoleucine, leucine, valine, and total BCAA) and fasting blood profiles of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) were determined in a sample of 423 women enrolled in the Filipino Women's Diet and Health Study (FiLWHEL). The generalized linear model was applied to estimate least-square (LS) means and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and compare plasma TG, TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C across tertile distribution of energy-adjusted dietary BCAA intakes at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Mean of energy-adjusted dietary total BCAA intake was 8.3 ± 3.9 g/d. Average plasma lipid profiles were 88.5 ± 47.4 mg/dl for TG, 179.7 ± 34.5 mg/dl for TC, 58.0 ± 13.7 mg/dl for HDL-C, and 104.0 ± 30.5 mg/dl for LDL-C. LS means, and 95% CIs across tertiles of energy-adjusted total BCAA intakes were 89.9 mg/dl, 88.8 mg/dl and 85.8 mg/dl (P-trend = 0.45) for TG, 179.1 mg/dl, 183.6 mg/dl and 176.5 mg/dl (P-trend = 0.48) for TC, 57.5 mg/dl, 59.6 mg/dl and 57.1 mg/dl (P-trend = 0.75) for HDL-C and 103.6 mg/dl, 106.2 mg/dl and 102.3 mg/dl (P-trend = 0.68) for LDL-C. Furthermore, the multivariable-adjusted prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals for dyslipidaemia across increasing tertile distribution of energy-adjusted total BCAA intake were; 1.00, 0.67 (0.40, 1.13) and 0.45 (0.16, 1.27; P-trend = 0.03) for the first, second and third tertile, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Higher dietary intakes of BCAA presented a statistically significant inverse trend with the prevalence of dyslipidaemia among Filipino women in this study and testing these associations in longitudinal studies may be necessary to confirm these findings.
