RESUMO

In this study, the variability of major glucosinolates in the leaf lamina of 134 Chinese cabbage accessions was investigated using Acquity ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC-ESI-MS/MS). A total of twenty glucosinolates were profiled, of which glucobrassicanapin and gluconapin were identified as the predominant glucosinolates within the germplasm. These two glucosinolates had mean concentration levels above 1000.00 µmol/kg DW. Based on the principal component analysis, accessions IT186728, IT120044, IT221789, IT100417, IT278620, IT221754, and IT344740 were separated from the rest in the score plot. These accessions exhibited a higher content of total glucosinolates. Based on the VIP values, 13 compounds were identified as the most influential and responsible for variation in the germplasm. Sinigrin (r = 0.73), gluconapin (r = 0.78), glucobrassicanapin (r = 0.70), epiprogoitrin (r = 0.73), progoitrin (r = 0.74), and gluconasturtiin (r = 0.67) all exhibited a strong positive correlation with total glucosinolate at p < 0.001. This indicates that each of these compounds had a significant influence on the overall glucosinolate content of the various accessions. This study contributes valuable insights into the metabolic diversity of glucosinolates in Chinese cabbage, providing potential for breeding varieties tailored to consumer preferences and nutritional demands.

RESUMO

In resistive switching memories or artificial synaptic devices, halide perovskites have attracted attention for their unusual features such as rapid ion migration, adjustable composition, and facile synthesis. Herein, the environmentally friendly and highly air stable CsCu2I3 perovskite films are used as the active layer in the Au/CsCu2I3/ITO/glass artificial synapses. The device shows variable synaptic plasticities such as long-term and short-term synaptic plasticity, paired-pulse facilitation, and spike-timing-dependent plasticity by combining potentiation and depression along the formation of conductive filaments. The performances of the devices are maintained for 160 days under ambient conditions. Additionally, the accuracy evaluation of the CsCu2I3-based artificial synapses performs exceptionally well with the MNIST and Fashion MNIST data sets, demonstrating high learning accuracy in deep neural networks. Using the novel B-site engineered halide perovskite material with extreme air stability, this study paves the way for artificial synaptic devices for next-generation in-memory hardware.

RESUMO

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects >500 million people globally, and this number is expected to increase. OA management primarily focuses on symptom alleviation, using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including Celecoxib. However, such medication has serious side effects, emphasizing the need for disease-specific treatment. The meniscectomy and cranial cruciate ligament transection (CCLx)-treated beagle dog was used to investigate the efficacy of a modified-release formulation of SKI306X (SKCPT) from Clematis mandshurica, Prunella vulgaris, and Trichosanthes kirilowii in managing arthritis. SKCPT's anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties have been assessed via stifle circumference, gait, incapacitance, histopathology, and ELISA tests. The different SKCPT concentrations and formulations also affected the outcome. SKCPT improved the gait, histopathological, and ELISA OA assessment parameters compared to the control group. Pro-inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases were significantly lower in the SKCPT-treated groups than in the control group. This study found that SKCPT reduces arthritic lesions and improves abnormal gait. The 300 mg modified-release formulation was more efficacious than others, suggesting a promising approach for managing OA symptoms and addressing disease pathogenesis. A high active ingredient level and a release pattern make this formulation effective for twice-daily arthritis treatment.

RESUMO

Cellular senescence acts as an important barrier to tumorigenesis by eliminating precancerous cells. Previous studies have shown an essential role of the tumor suppressor p53 in cellular senescence, but how p53 induces cellular senescence is not fully understood. We found that p53 promoted the formation of highly interconnected and elongated mitochondria prior to the onset of cellular senescence. The inhibition of mitochondrial elongation upon p53 expression suppressed cellular senescence, suggesting that mitochondrial elongation is required for the induction of p53-dependent senescence. p53-induced mitochondrial elongation resulted in mitochondrial dysfunction and subsequent increases in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, an important mediator of cellular senescence. Mechanistically, the inhibitory phosphorylation of Drp1 Ser637 increased upon p53 expression, suppressing the translocation of Drp1 into mitochondria. The transcriptional function of p53 was crucial for controlling the inhibitory phosphorylation of Drp1, whereas p21 was nonessential. Protein kinase A (PKA) activity was responsible for p53-mediated Drp1 Ser637 phosphorylation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Taken together, these results suggest that p53 regulates mitochondrial dynamics through the PKA-Drp1 pathway to induce cellular senescence.

RESUMO

Organometallic and all-inorganic halide perovskites (HPs) have recently emerged as promising candidate materials for resistive switching (RS) nonvolatile memory due to their current-voltage hysteresis caused by fast ion migration. Lead-free and all-inorganic HPs have been researched for non-toxic and environmentally friendly RS memory devices. However, only HP-based devices with electrochemically active top electrode (TE) exhibit ultra-low operating voltages and high on/off ratio RS properties. The active TE easily reacts to halide ions in HP films, and the devices have a low device durability. Herein, RS memory devices based on an air-stable lead-free all-inorganic dual-phase HP (AgBi2 I7 -Cs3 Bi2 I9 ) are successfully fabricated with inert metal electrodes. The devices with Au TE show filamentary RS behavior by conducting-bridge involving Ag cations in HPs with ultra-low operating voltages (<0.15 V), high on/off ratio (>107 ), multilevel data storage, and long retention times (>5 × 104 s). The use of a closed-loop pulse switching method improves reversible RS properties up to 103 cycles with high on/off ratio above 106 . With an extremely small bending radius of 1 mm, the devices are operable with reasonable RS characteristics. This work provides a promising material strategy for lead-free all-inorganic HP-based nonvolatile memory devices for practical applications.

RESUMO

Mitophagy has been implicated in mitochondrial quality control and in various human diseases. However, the study of in vivo mitophagy remains limited. We previously explored in vivo mitophagy using a transgenic mouse expressing the mitochondria-targeted fluorescent protein Keima (mt-Keima). Here, we generated mt-Keima Drosophila to extend our efforts to study mitophagy in vivo. A series of experiments confirmed that mitophagy can be faithfully and quantitatively measured in mt-Keima Drosophila. We also showed that alterations in mitophagy upon environmental and genetic perturbation can be measured in mt-Keima Drosophila. Analysis of different tissues revealed a variation in basal mitophagy levels in Drosophila tissues. In addition, we found a significant increase in mitophagy levels during Drosophila embryogenesis. Importantly, loss-of-function genetic analysis demonstrated that the phosphatase and tensin homolog-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1)-Parkin pathway is essential for the induction of mitophagy in vivo in response to hypoxic exposure and rotenone treatment. These studies showed that the mt-Keima Drosophila system is a useful tool for understanding the role and molecular mechanism of mitophagy in vivo. In addition, we demonstrated the essential role of the PINK1-Parkin pathway in mitophagy induction in response to mitochondrial dysfunction.-Kim, Y. Y., Um, J.-H., Yoon, J.-H., Kim, H., Lee, D.-Y., Lee, Y. J., Jee, H. J., Kim, Y. M., Jang, J. S., Jang, Y.-G., Chung, J., Park, H. T., Finkel, T., Koh, H., Yun, J. Assessment of mitophagy in mt-Keima Drosophila revealed an essential role of the PINK1-Parkin pathway in mitophagy induction in vivo.

RESUMO

AIMS: SB4 has been developed as a biosimilar of etanercept. The primary objective of the present study was to demonstrate the pharmacokinetic (PK) equivalence between SB4 and European Union -sourced etanercept (EU-ETN), SB4 and United States-sourced etanercept (US-ETN), and EU-ETN and US-ETN. The safety and immunogenicity were also compared between the treatments. METHODS: This was a single-blind, three-part, crossover study in 138 healthy male subjects. In each part, 46 subjects were randomized at a 1:1 ratio to receive a single 50 mg subcutaneous dose of the treatments (part A: SB4 or EU-ETN; part B: SB4 or US-ETN; and part C: EU-ETN or US-ETN) in period 1, followed by the crossover treatment in period 2 according to their assigned sequences. PK equivalence between the treatments was determined using the standard equivalence margin of 80-125%. RESULTS: The geometric least squares means ratios of AUCinf , AUClast and Cmax were 99.04%, 98.62% and 103.71% (part A: SB4 vs. EU-ETN); 101.09%, 100.96% and 104.36% (part B: SB4 vs. US-ETN); and 100.51%, 101.27% and 103.29% (part C: EU-ETN vs. US-ETN), respectively, and the corresponding 90% confidence intervals were completely contained within the limits of 80-125 %. The incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events was comparable, and the incidence of the antidrug antibodies was lower in SB4 compared with the reference products. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated PK equivalence between SB4 and EU-ETN, SB4 and US-ETN, and EU-ETN and US-ETN in healthy male subjects. SB4 was well tolerated, with a lower immunogenicity profile and similar safety profile compared with those of the reference products.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score is easy to calculate and has been well validated as an outcome predictor in critically ill adult patients. However, its use in children has been limited, mainly because of differences in basal reference levels of serum creatinine. METHODS: Data include 87 patients requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) between January 2005 and July 2011. We modified the SOFA score by excluding the renal component to an extrarenal SOFA score, based on the assumption that CRRT may mitigate the renal effect on outcome and investigated the utility in predicting outcome with comparison with pediatric risk of mortality (PRISM) III, pediatric logistic organ dysfunction (PELOD), and SOFA scores. RESULTS: Results showed that 95.4 % (n = 83) had multiple organ dysfunction syndrome with an overall mortality of 50.6 %. The extrarenal SOFA score at CRRT initiation and ≥20 % fluid overload were significantly associated with mortality. In comparison with the predictive power of various scoring systems, the extrarenal SOFA score showed the largest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (extrarenal SOFA 0.774, SOFA 0.770, PRISM III 0.660, and PELOD 0.650). CONCLUSIONS: The extrarenal SOFA score may be a useful prognostic marker in critically ill children treated with CRRT.

RESUMO

AIM: Although asymptomatic gross haematuria (GHU) is relatively common in children, its causes and clinical outcomes are not clearly defined. METHODS: Children with asymptomatic GHU were examined and work-up was performed. Patients with recurrent GHU with proteinuria, or significant proteinuria, were considered for renal biopsy. RESULTS: The male : female ratio of all patients was 190:75, and the median age at onset of GHU was 6.4 years. Patients were grouped according to abnormalities on initial evaluation as follows: idiopathic (50%), proteinuria (21%), hypercalciuria (14%), sonographic abnormality (7%), hypocomplementaemia (4%), familial (3%), and bleeding tendency (2%). Of patients with idiopathic GHU, 38% had a single episode, and of these, 34% had persistent microscopic haematuria, which resolved on follow-up. Late onset proteinuria was accompanied in 11% of patients with recurrent GHU. Nutcracker syndrome was diagnosed in one patient with recurrent idiopathic GHU. Of patients with recurrent GHU, 89% had no proteinuria on follow-up, and GHU and microscopic haematuria resolved in 97% and 89%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our work-up protocol was useful for diagnosis and follow-up planning. Asymptomatic GHU in children was most commonly the idiopathic form. Overall, long-term prognosis appears to be benign; however, careful follow-up is essential.

RESUMO

Metal-insulator transition (MIT) coupled with an ultrafast, significant, and reversible resistive change in Mott insulators has attracted tremendous interest for investigation into next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices, as well as a fundamental understanding of condensed matter systems. Although the mechanism of MIT in Mott insulators is still controversial, great efforts have been made to understand and modulate MIT behavior for various electronic and optoelectronic applications. In this review, recent progress in the field of nanoelectronics utilizing MIT is highlighted. A brief introduction to the physics of MIT and its underlying mechanisms is begun. After discussing the MIT behaviors of various Mott insulators, recent advances in the design and fabrication of nanoelectronics devices based on MIT, including memories, gas sensors, photodetectors, logic circuits, and artificial neural networks are described. Finally, an outlook on the development and future applications of nanoelectronics utilizing MIT is provided. This review can serve as an overview and a comprehensive understanding of the design of MIT-based nanoelectronics for future electronic and optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a malignant tumor of mesenchymal origin that rarely occurs in the urinary tract, particularly in the urinary bladder. Unlike urothelial carcinoma, which accounts for most bladder cancers, it occurs in the submucosal portion of the bladder wall and consists of the lamina propria, muscularis propria, and adventitia. It is presumed to originate from poorly differentiated pluripotent mesenchymal cells in which fibroblasts and histiocytes are partially differentiated. Radiologically, it is known as the "non-papillary tumor" and is commonly diagnosed as a large mass without necrosis, which shows invasion beyond the muscularis propia. Although the prognosis of this rare malignancy depends on pathological parameters, it generally has a poor prognosis with high local tumor recurrence. Here, we present a case of primary MFH in the urinary bladder with clinical symptoms of lower abdominal pain without gross hematuria that recurred rapidly and showed an aggressive disease course.

RESUMO

Preventing ferroelectric materials from losing their ferroelectricity over a low thickness of several nanometers is crucial in developing multifunctional nanoelectronics. Epitaxially grown 5 at. % yttrium-doped Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (YHZO) thin films exhibit an atomically smooth surface, an ability to maintain ferroelectricity even at a thickness of 10 nm, and excellent insulating properties, making them suitable for use as gate oxides in ferroelectric thin film transistors (FeTFTs). Through the epitaxial growth of a YHZO/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO)/SrTiO3 (STO) heterostructure, YHZO effectively retains its ferroelectricity and orthorhombic single phase, leading to enhancing electron mobility (∼19.74 cm2 V-1 s-1) and memory window (3.7 V) in the amorphous InGaZnO4 (a-IGZO)/YHZO/LSMO/STO FeTFTs. These FeTFTs demonstrate a consistent memory function with remarkable endurance (∼106 cycles) and retention (∼104 s). Furthermore, they sustain a constant memory window even under ±6 V bias stress for 104 s and exhibit excellent stability even under ±6 V/1 ms pulse cycling for 107 cycles. For comparison, a transistor with the same structure was fabricated using epitaxial nonferroelectric LaAlO3 (LAO) and epitaxial undoped Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) as alternatives to YHZO. This study presents a novel approach to exploit the potential of YHZO in FeTFTs, contributing to the development of next-generation logic-in-memory.

RESUMO

Severe vaso-occlusive retinopathy is a relatively rare form of retinopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We report two patients with severe vaso-occlusive retinopathy in SLE who were treated with intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB). (Patient 1) A 35-year-old woman presented with left visual loss and was diagnosed with SLE after systemic evaluation. Despite systemic immunosuppressive therapy, retinal vascular obstruction progressed and neovascularization of the disk (NVD) developed. The patient was treated with IVB and pan retinal photocoagulation. The progression of vascular obstruction ceased and regressed. (Patient 2) A 24-year-old man with SLE presented with left visual loss. There was retinal vascular obstruction with macular edema in both eyes, and then the patient was treated with IVB. One month after injection, minimal capillary nonperfusion increased to 10 disk area, and 5 months later, neovascularization elsewhere (NVE) developed in the right eye. Six months after injection, vitreous hemorrhage with florid NVE and NVD developed in the left eye. In selected severe vaso-occlusive retinopathy in SLE patients, IVB may be an adjuvant option for treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diffuse large B-cell lymphomas are the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Because cutaneous lymphomas predominantly originate from the T cells, primary cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphomas are considered a rare subtype of extranodal diffuse large B-cell lymphomas that commonly involve the subcutaneous tissues of the trunk and extremities. To date, only a single case of facial primary cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma has been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: We present a case of primary cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma presented with a small painless nodule in the right nasolabial fold that had persisted for 10 days in a 67-year-old man. Ultrasonographic findings of this lesion mimicked the features of a complicated epidermal inclusion cyst. Primary cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma was confirmed by an excisional biopsy of the mass. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of primary cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphomas presenting as "oops lesions" in daily clinical practice can be challenging due to their rarity and nonspecific clinical and radiological findings. Therefore, clinical suspicion and awareness are critical for the accurate diagnosis and management of patients with palpable soft tissue masses in the head and neck region.

RESUMO

Glucosinolates are sulfur-containing phytochemicals generally abundant in cruciferous vegetables such as pak choy. Glucosinolates participate in a range of biological activities essential for promoting a healthy human body. In this study, we aimed to elucidate glucosinolate variability present in pak choy germplasm that are under conservation at the Rural Development Administration Genebank, Jeonju, Republic of Korea. The Acquity Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) analytical system was used in profiling the glucosinolate content in leaf samples of various accessions. We identified a total of 17 glucosinolates in the germplasm. Based on principal compoment analysis performed, three separate groups of the accessions were obtained. Group 1 contained the cultivar cheongsacholong which recorded high content of glucobrassicin (an indole), glucoerucin (aliphatic), gluconasturtiin (aromatic) and glucoberteroin (aliphatic). Group 2 consisted of six accessions, BRA77/72, Lu ling gaogengbai, 9041, Wuyueman, RP-75 and DH-10, predominatly high in aliphatic compounds including glucoiberin, glucocheirolin, and sinigrin. Group 3 comprised the majority of the accessions which were characterized by high content of glucoraphanin, epiprogoitrin, progoitrin, and glucotropaeolin. These results revealed the presence of variability among the pak choy germplasm based on their glucosinolate content, providing an excellent opprtunity for future breeding for improved glucosinolate content in the crop.

RESUMO

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral infection that is mainly caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus 16 (CVA16). As there are no specific therapeutics for HFMD, the development of a bivalent vaccine is required to cover a broad range of infections. In this study, the effectiveness of novel monovalent and bivalent vaccines targeting EV71 C4a and CVA16 was investigated for their ability to prevent viral infections in neonatal human scavenger receptor class B member 2 (hSCARB2) transgenic mice. As hSCARB2 serves as a key viral receptor for EV71, these transgenic mice are susceptible to EV71 strains and facilitate viral binding, internalization, and uncoating processes. Antisera prepared by vaccine immunization were transferred to 2-day-old hSCARB2 transgenic mice, which were then infected with EV71 C4a or CVA16 virus. The antisera generated by each monovalent or bivalent vaccine effectively protected against EV71 C4a and CVA16 infections. The examination of tissue damage and viral contents in various organs indicated that both monovalent and bivalent antisera reduced EV71 C4a viral load in the brainstem, and no significant tissue damage was observed. During CVA16 infection, the monovalent and bivalent antisera significantly reduced viral contents in both the brainstem and muscles. These results suggest that passive immunity by monovalent and bivalent antisera can effectively protect against EV71 C4a and CVA16 infections. Thus, the development of a bivalent vaccine that can provide broad protection against both CV and EV infections may be a promising strategy in preventing HFMD.

RESUMO

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infectious disease that occurs in children under 5 years of age. Its main causes are coxsackievirus (CV) and enterovirus (EV). Since there are no efficient therapeutics for HFMD, vaccines are effective in preventing the disease. To develop broad coverage against CV and EV, the development of a bivalent vaccine form is needed. The Mongolian gerbil is an efficient and suitable animal model of EV71 C4a and CVA16 infection used to investigate vaccine efficacy following direct immunization. In this study, Mongolian gerbils were immunized with a bivalent inactivated EV71 C4a and inactivated CVA16 vaccine to test their effectiveness against viral infection. Bivalent vaccine immunization resulted in increased Ag-specific IgG antibody production; specifically, EV71 C4a-specific IgG was increased with medium and high doses and CVA16-specific IgG was increased with all doses of immunization. When gene expression of T cell-biased cytokines was analysed, Th1, Th2, and Th17 responses were found to be highly activated in the high-dose immunization group. Moreover, bivalent vaccine immunization mitigated paralytic signs and increased the survival rate following lethal viral challenges. When the viral RNA content was determined from various organs, all three doses of bivalent vaccine immunization were found to significantly decrease viral amplification. Upon histologic examination, EV71 C4a and CVA16 induced tissue damage to the heart and muscle. However, bivalent vaccine immunization alleviated this in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that the bivalent inactivated EV71 C4a/CVA16 vaccine could be a safe and effective candidate HFMD vaccine.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We prospectively determined the risk factors for renal scar formation after the first episode of acute pyelonephritis as confirmed on dimercapto-succinic acid scintigraphy in children younger than 1 year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 213 infants with acute pyelonephritis were enrolled in the study. Infants with urological abnormalities other than vesicoureteral reflux were excluded from analysis. Followup scanning was performed 6 months after acute pyelonephritis and voiding cystourethrography was performed after the acute phase of infection. Possible risk factors were evaluated including gender, peak fever, duration of fever before and after treatment with antibiotics, white blood cell count, C-reactive protein concentration, presence of vesicoureteral reflux and reflux grade. RESULTS: Six months after acute pyelonephritis 37 of 213 (17.4%) infants and 41 of 248 (16.5%) renal units with acute photon defects on initial dimercapto-succinic acid scintigraphy had renal scars. The rates of scar formation were significantly higher in infants with vesicoureteral reflux than in those without (39.4% vs 7.5%, p <0.001, OR 9.433) and in renal units with vesicoureteral reflux than in those without (39.4% vs 8.2%, p <0.001, OR 7.237). Renal scar formation was related to reflux grade (none-8.2%, grade I-20%, grade II-22.7%, grade III-40%, grade IV-70%, grade V-55.6%, p <0.001) but not to any other clinical or laboratory variables. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of vesicoureteral reflux was the only independent risk factor for renal scar formation after acute pyelonephritis in infants. The prevalence of renal scarring was significantly correlated with reflux grade. Voiding cystourethrography is necessary in infants after the first acute pyelonephritis episode is confirmed on dimercapto-succinic acid renal scintigraphy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We conducted a Phase I clinical trial to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics (PK) of CKD-732 [6-O-(4-dimethylaminoethoxy) cinnamoyl fumagillol hemioxalate] in combination with capecitabine and oxaliplatin (XELOX) in nine metastatic colorectal cancer patients who had progressed on irinotecan-based chemotherapy. METHODS: Using a dose-escalation schedule, CKD-732 doses of 2, 5, or 10 mg/m(2)/d were administered twice weekly for 2 weeks, followed by a 1-week rest. Oxaliplatin (130 mg/m(2)) was administered on day 1, and capecitabine (1,000 mg/m(2) twice a day) was orally administered for 14 days of a 3-week cycle. RESULTS: In the group given the 10 mg/m(2)/d dose, two patients experienced dose limiting toxicities (one had grade 3 nausea, insomnia, and fatigue; the other had grade 3 insomnia). The maximum tolerated dose was 10 mg/m(2)/d, and the clinically recommended dose was 5 mg/m(2)/d for CKD-732 in combination with XELOX. Frequently encountered non-hematological grade 3/4 adverse events included insomnia (22.2%), fatigue (11.1%), sensory neuropathy (11.1%), hyperbilirubinemia (11.1%), and dyspnea (11.1%). The area under the concentration-time curve and maximum concentration of CKD-732 increased in a dose-dependent manner. There were no notable effects of CKD-732 on the PK of capecitabine and oxaliplatin-derived platinum. CONCLUSION: The Phase II recommended dose of CKD-732 was determined to be 5 mg/m(2)/d, and this dose was safely combined with a conventional dose of capecitabine and oxaliplatin in this patient population. Further studies on the effects of CKD-732 in combination with XELOX and other chemotherapies using a larger study population are warranted.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium species are uncommon causes of osteomyelitis. These organisms are normal flora of the oral cavity. Therefore, they mostly cause osteomyelitis of the head and neck. Hematogenous osteomyelitis at distant sites other than the head and neck has rarely been reported in pediatric or immunocompromised patients. Here, we report the first case of osteomyelitis of a long bone combined with a muscle abscess due to Fusobacterium nucleatum in an otherwise healthy adult. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old Korean man was admitted for pain and swelling of the right lower leg, which had been persistent for two weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging showed osteomyelitis of the right fibula with a surrounding muscle abscess of the right lower leg. Incision and drainage was performed, and repetitive tissue cultures grew F. nucleatum. In this patient, it was presumed that recurrent periodontitis caused hematogenous seeding of F. nucleatum to a distant site leading to osteomyelitis with a muscle abscess. The patient was successfully treated with intravenous ampicillin-sulbactam for three weeks and oral amoxicillin-clavulanate for eight weeks. He also underwent repeated surgical drainage. He has no evidence of recurrence after seven months of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should be aware that F. nucleatum could be the etiologic agent of hematogenous osteomyelitis of a long bone in an immunocompetent patient.
