RESUMO

Rechargeable Li-metal batteries have the potential to more than double the specific energy of the state-of-the-art rechargeable Li-ion batteries, making Li-metal batteries a prime candidate for next-generation high-energy battery technology1-3. However, current Li-metal batteries suffer from fast cycle degradation compared with their Li-ion battery counterparts2,3, preventing their practical adoption. A main contributor to capacity degradation is the disconnection of Li from the electrochemical circuit, forming isolated Li4-8. Calendar ageing studies have shown that resting in the charged state promotes further reaction of active Li with the surrounding electrolyte9-12. Here we discover that calendar ageing in the discharged state improves capacity retention through isolated Li recovery, which is in contrast with the well-known phenomenon of capacity degradation observed during the charged state calendar ageing. Inactive capacity recovery is verified through observation of Coulombic efficiency greater than 100% on both Li||Cu half-cells and anode-free cells using a hybrid continuous-resting cycling protocol and with titration gas chromatography. An operando optical setup further confirms excess isolated Li reactivation as the predominant contributor to the increased capacity recovery. These insights into a previously unknown pathway for capacity recovery through discharged state resting emphasize the marked impact of cycling strategies on Li-metal battery performance.

Protein palmitoylation is a post-translational lipid modification of proteins. Accumulating evidence reveals that palmitoylation functions as a sorting signal to direct proteins to destinations; however, the sorting mechanism remains largely unknown. Here, we show that ARF6 plays a general role in targeting palmitoylated proteins from the Golgi to the plasma membrane (PM). Through shRNA screening, we identified ARF6 as the key small GTPase in targeting CD36, a palmitoylated protein, from the Golgi to the PM. We found that the N-terminal myristoylation of ARF6 is required for its binding with palmitoylated CD36, and the GTP-bound form of ARF6 facilitates the delivery of CD36 to the PM. Analysis of stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture revealed that ARF6 might facilitate the sorting of 359 of the 531 palmitoylated PM proteins, indicating a general role of ARF6. Our study has thus identified a sorting mechanism for targeting palmitoylated proteins from the Golgi to the PM.

Microorganisms are crucial components of freshwater ecosystems. Understanding the microbial community assembly processes and niche characteristics in freshwater ecosystems, which are poorly understood, is crucial for evaluating microbial ecological roles. The Yunnan Plateau lakes in China represent a freshwater ecosystem that is experiencing eutrophication due to anthropogenic activities. Here, variation in the assembly and niche characteristics of both prokaryotic and microeukaryotic communities was explored in Yunnan Plateau lakes across two seasons (dry season and rainy season) to determine the impacts of rainfall and environmental conditions on the microbial community and niche. The results showed that the environmental heterogeneity of the lakes decreased in the rainy season compared to the dry season. The microbial (bacterial and microeukaryotic) α-diversity significantly decreased during the rainy season. Deterministic processes were found to dominate microbial community assembly in both seasons. ß-Diversity decomposition analysis revealed that microbial community compositional dissimilarities were dominated by species replacement processes. The co-occurrence networks indicated reduced species complexity for microbes and a destabilized network for prokaryotes prior to rainfall, while the opposite was found for microeukaryotes following rainfall. Microbial niche breadth decreased significantly in the rainy season. In addition, lower prokaryotic niche overlap, but greater microeukaryotic niche overlap, was observed after rainfall. Rainfall and environmental conditions significantly affected the microbial community assembly and niche characteristics. It can be concluded that rainfall and external pollutant input during the seasonal transition alter the lake environment, thereby regulating the microbial community and niche in these lakes. Our findings offer new insight into microbiota assembly and niche patterns in plateau lakes, further deepening the understanding of freshwater ecosystem functioning.

Many cases of an unknown disease exhibiting the clinical features of limb gangrene, blisters, ulceration, and exfoliation have been reported in Daping village (DV) in southwestern China. However, the pathogenesis is unknown and has puzzled doctors for many years. A preliminary study on heavy metals and symptoms indicated that arsenic might pose the greatest threat to the health of local residents. Here, to explore the sources of and factors influencing arsenic enrichment in DV, whose residents exhibit signs of arsenic poisoning, the As contents in soil, water, and plants were systematically measured. The results indicated high As contents in plant and soil samples obtained from the area, and the source of As may be linked to the weathering of black shale rock. Ingestion of soil and consumption of plants were the two main As exposure pathways among children and adults, respectively, and children exhibited a higher health risk than adults. We presume and emphasize that when extreme drought events occur, humans might face unusual risks resulting from exposure to toxic elements and the direct consumption of highly polluted water. Our study provides a new perspective and sheds light on the environmental geochemistry and health links of this disease.

The Mn-based materials are considered as the most promising cathodes for zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) due to their inherent advantages of safety, sustainability and high energy density, however suffer from poor cyclability caused by gradual Mn2+ dissolution and irreversible structural transformation. The mainstream solution is pre-adding Mn2+ into the electrolyte, nevertheless faces the challenge of irreversible Mn2+ consumption results from the MnO2 electrodeposition reaction (Mn2+  â†’ MnO2 ). This work proposes a "MOFs as the electrodeposition surface" strategy, rather than blocking it. The bismuth (III) pyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate (Bi-PYDC) is selected as the typical electrodeposition surface to regulate the deposition reaction from Mn2+ to MnO2 . Because of the unique less hydrophilic and manganophilic nature of Bi-PYDC for Mn2+ , a moderate MnO2 deposition rate is achieved, preventing the electrolyte from rapidly exhausting Mn2+ . Simultaneously, the intrinsic stability of deposited R-MnO2 is enhanced by the slowly released Bi3+ from Bi-PYDC reservoir. Furthermore, Bi-PYDC shows the ability to accommodate H+ insertion/extraction. Benefiting from these merits, the cathode-free ZIB using Bi-PYDC as the electrodeposition surface for MnO2 shows an outstanding cycle lifespan of more than 10 000 cycles at 1 mA cm-2 . This electrode design may stimulate a new pathway for developing cathode free long-life rechargeable ZIBs.

The α-Ni(OH)2 is regarded as one promising cathode for aqueous nickel-zinc batteries due to its high theoretical capacity of ≈480 mAh g-1 , its practical deployment however suffers from the poor stability in strong alkaline solution, intrinsic low electrical conductivity as well as the retarded ionic diffusion. Herein, a 3D (three dimensional) macroporous α-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets with Co doping is designed through a facile and easily scalable electroless plating combined with electrodeposition strategy. The unique micrometer-sized 3D pores come from Ni substrate and rich voids between Co-doping α-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets can synergistically afford facile, interconnected ionic diffusion channels, sufficient free space for accommodating its volume changes during cycling; meanwhile, the Co-doping can stabilize the structural robustness of the α-Ni(OH)2 in the alkaline electrolyte during cycling. Thus, the 3D α-Ni(OH)2 shows a high capacity of 284 mAh g-1 at 0.5 mA cm-2 with an excellent retention of 78% even at 15 mA cm-2 , and more than 2000 stable cycles at 6 mA cm-2 , as well as the robust cycling upon various flexible batteries. This work provides a simple and efficient pathway to enhance the electrochemical performance of Ni-Zn batteries through improving ionic transport kinetics and stabilizing crystal structure of cathodes.

Amino acids provide novel and superior performance for two-dimensional materials and bio-based devices. The interaction and adsorption of amino acid molecules on substrates have thus attracted extensive research for exploring the driving forces involved in the formation of nanostructures. Nevertheless, the interactions within amino acid molecules on inert surfaces have not been fully understood. Herein, from the interplay of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy imaging and density functional theory calculations, we show the self-assembled structures of Glu and Ser molecules on Au(111), which are dominated by intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and further investigate their most stable structural models at the atomic scale. This study would be of fundamental importance in understanding the formation processes of biologically relevant nanostructures and provide possibilities for chemical modification.

OBJECTIVE: To report demographics and clinical, laboratory, and imaging features of acute renal infarction (ARI) due to symptomatic isolated spontaneous renal artery dissection (SISRAD) and to analyze outcomes after the initial therapy for SISRAD. METHODS: Thirteen patients with ARI due to SISRAD between January 2016 and March 2021 were enrolled in this retrospective study. We reviewed the demographics, clinical, laboratory, and imaging features (location of the infarct kidney, the branch artery involved by dissection, true lumen stenosis, false lumen thrombosis, and aneurysm), treatment modalities, and follow-up results; analyzed the difference between SISRAD and other causes of ARI; and propose an appropriate therapy strategy for SISRAD based on our data and literature. RESULT: Patients with ARI due to SISRAD were mostly young men (43 [24-53] years; 12/13 [92%]). No patients had atrial fibrillation or acute kidney injury at admission (0/13). All 13 patients received conservative treatment as the initial treatment. Sixty-two percent (8/13) of patients progressed, and 88% (7/8) of them had dissection aneurysm on the admission computed tomographic angiography (CTA) image. Seventy-five percent (6/8) of patients underwent endovascular intervention as follows, stent placement in 1 patient, renal artery embolization in 1, and stent placement with embolization in 4. Two patients with disease progression died: 1 during the conservative treatment period and 1 after the stent placement. Thirty-eight percent (5/13) of patients in remission continued to receive conservative treatment, none of whom had dissection aneurysm on the admission CTA. CONCLUSION: Symptomatic isolated spontaneous renal artery dissection is a rare and fatal disease. For young ARI patients with no previous history of tumors and cardiogenic diseases, CTA examination is recommended to exclude SISRAD. Dissection aneurysm seems to be a risk of progression for SISRAD in this series. Conservative treatment, a recognized initial treatment, has a good effect on patients without dissection aneurysm, and we recommend endovascular intervention as the initial treatment for the patient with dissection aneurysm at admission. Multicenter clinical studies are needed to explore a more-appropriate treatment for patients with SISRAD. CLINICAL IMPACT: This article report the related factors, risks, demographics and laboratory data of Acute renal infarction (ARI) due to Symptomatic isolated spontaneous renal artery dissection (SISRAD) and explore a better initial therapy strategy for SISRAD. It will help improve the effectiveness of SISRAD treatment and reduce the mortality rate from this rare but lethal disease.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, the long term durability of fenestrations after in situ fenestration (ISF) of five commercial thoracic aortic stent grafts was evaluated in an in vitro experiment after a simulated 10 year period. METHODS: Five different thoracic aortic stent grafts (Relay, Valiant, Hercules, TAG, and Ankura, with a diameter of 34 mm) received both needle and laser ISF in vitro. A Viabahn (11 × 50 mm) was released in each fenestration as a bridging stent graft. Long term fatigue tests (simulating 10 years) of each of the fenestrated stent grafts were then conducted in a flow fatigue test system. The area, shape, margin, and the long and short axis of all the fenestrations were evaluated with light microscopy before and after the fatigue test. The leakage from the fenestration junction before and after the long term fatigue was also measured. RESULTS: The experimental results showed no obvious difference between needle and laser fenestrations. The long axes of all the fenestrations remained unchanged, while the short axes increased after the fatigue test, which was significant in Relay, Valiant, and Hercules polyethylene terephthalate stent grafts. The shape scores of fenestrations improved after the fatigue test in Valiant and Hercules, remained unchanged in Relay and Ankura, and worsened in the TAG. After the fatigue cycling, the average leakage from the fenestration junction decreased in all the stent grafts, and the Ankura had the maximum decline rate. CONCLUSION: The ISF technique was durable over a simulated 10 year period. The fenestrations were positively remodelled to be more circular, and the leakage from the junction decreased after long term fatigue testing.

The somewhat slow recovery kinetics of NO2sensing at low temperatures are still challenging to overcome. To enhance the gas sensing property, fluorine is doped to MoS2nanoflowers by facile hydrothermal method. Extensive characterization data demonstrate that F was effectively incorporated into the MoS2nanoflowers, and that the microstructure of the MoS2nanoflowers did not change upon F doping. The two MoS2doped with varying concentrations of fluorine were tested for their sensing property to NO2gas. Both of them show good repeatability and stability. A smaller recovery time was seen in the F-MoS2-1 sample with a little amount of F loading, which was three times quicker than that of pure MoS2. The key reason for the quicker recovery time of this material was found to be the fluorine ions that had been adsorbed on the surface of F-MoS2-1 would take up some of the NO2adsorption site. Additionally, the sample F-MoS2-2 with a higher F doping level demonstrated increased sensitivity. The F-MoS2-2 sensor's high sensitivity was mostly due to the lattice fluorine filled to the sulfur vacancy, which generated impurity levels and reduced the energy required for its electronic transition. This study might contribute to the development of new molybdenum sulfide based gas sensor.

There is a high therapeutic need in acantholytic and blistering genodermatoses. Cutaneous inflammation is a reasonable therapeutic target, although the patterns are not yet fully elucidated. Here we investigated by immunohistochemistry whether interleukin (IL)-17A is expressed in the inflammatory infiltrate in 34 patients with Hailey-Hailey disease, Darier disease, and junctional and dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. There was a 5-7-fold increase in the number of IL-17A-positive cells in all patients' samples as compared with normal skin. IL-17A cells were present in epidermal acantholytic areas and dermal inflammatory infiltrates in Hailey-Hailey and Darier disease. In epidermolysis bullosa samples, positive cells were present at the dermoepidermal junction zone. The IL-17A inflammatory pattern was validated by observing upregulation of downstream genes/proteins, S100A7, S100A8 and S100A9 (S100 calcium-binding proteins). These results suggest that IL-17A contributes to skin inflammation and could be a therapeutic target during inflammatory flares in these disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the long-term survival outcomes of laparoscopic radical hysterectomy (LRH) and open radical hysterectomy (ORH) in International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) 2018 early-stage cervical adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Based on the clinical diagnosis and treatment for cervical cancer in mainland China (Four C) database, the medical records of 1098 patients with FIGO 2018 early-stage cervical adenocarcinoma were retrospectively reviewed. Long-term and short-term survival outcomes of the two groups were compared using a multivariate Cox regression model and the log-rank method in the whole study population and after propensity score matching. RESULTS: There was no difference in disease-free survival (hazard ratio [HR] 0.921, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.532-1.595, p = 0.770) and overall survival (HR 1.168, 95% CI: 0.526-2.592, p = 0.702) between LRH (n = 468) and ORH (n = 468) in the risk-adjusted analysis. LRH resulted in significantly lower estimated blood loss (342.7 vs. 157.5 mL, p < 0.001) and shorter postoperative anal exhaust time (2.8 vs. 2.5 days, p < 0.001) in risk-adjusted analysis. The overall rates of intraoperative complications (2.4% vs. 4.3%, p = 0.100) and postoperative complications (7.5% vs. 6.2%, p = 0.437) showed no significant difference between the two groups. However, the LRH group had a significantly higher incidence of ureter injury (0.4% vs. 2.4%, p = 0.012) and great vessel injury (0.0% vs. 0.9%, p = 0.045) compared to the other group. No statistical variation in the site of recurrence was observed between the two groups (p = 0.613). CONCLUSIONS: LRH has comparable survival outcomes with ORH and was associated with earlier recovery in FIGO 2018 early-stage adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix. However, the LRH group had higher risk of ureter injury and great vessel injury.

Exploitation of advanced methotrexate (MTX) delivery with nanocomposites has important clinical application value. Poloxamer 188 micelle and layered double hydroxide loaded with MTX (LDH-MTX) by exfoliation reassembling were used to prepare LDH-MTX-poloxamer 188 nanocomposites with good dispersibility and efficient cellular uptake for controlled drug delivery. The LDH-MTX-poloxamer 188 nanocomposites with sphere-like morphology, of which the average hydrodynamic diameter was <100 nm, were shown to have better dispersion state than naked LDH-MTX. Importantly, the LDH-MTX-poloxamer 188 nanocomposites could achieve significant sustained drug release and have obvious pH dependent responsive release ability. In addition, these nanocomposites also exhibited long-term and excellent in vitro antitumor efficacy as opposed to pure MTX or LDH-MTX as evident from cell viability. More interestingly, compared to pure FITC used to simulate MTX, LDH nanocomposites labeled with FITC were considered to have better cell adhesion through cell uptake. Therefore, the studied nanocomposites of LDH-MTX-poloxamer 188 can be further used as a new advanced MTX delivery nanovehicles with desired properties in future therapeutic aspects.

Water, as one of the most important and indispensable small molecules in vivo, plays a crucial role in driving biological self-assembly processes. Real-space detection and identification of water-induced organic structures and further capture of dynamic dehydration processes are important yet challenging, which would help to reveal the cooperation and competition mechanisms among water-involved noncovalent interactions. Herein, introduction of water molecules onto the self-assembled thymine (T) structures under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions results in the hydration of hydrogen-bonded T dimers forming a well-ordered water-involved T structure. Reversibly, a local dehydration process is achieved by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) manipulation on single water molecules, where the adjacent T dimers connected with water molecules undergo a local chiral inversion process with the hydrogen-bonding configuration preserved. Such a strategy enables real-space identification and detection of the interactions between water and organic molecules, which may also shed light on the understanding of biologically relevant self-assembly processes driven by water.

3D porous Ni is fabricated via an easily scalable electroless plating method using a dynamic template formed through in-situ hydrogen bubbles. The pore size in the range of several micrometers is controllable through adjusting the Ni2+ depositing rate and hydrogen bubbles releasing rate. The Ni3 S2 nanosheet arrays anode is then grown on the unique 3D porous Ni current collector followed by subsequent surface phosphorization. The tremendous interconnected pores and rich voids between the Ni3 S2 nanosheet arrays cannot only provide rapid transferring channels for Na+ , but also accommodate volumetric changes of the Ni3 S2 electrode during cycling, guaranteeing the integrity of the active material. In addition, the surface phosphorized layer enhances the electronic conductivity through providing an electron transport highway along the 3D Ni3 S2 , NiP2 layer, and 3D porous Ni current collector, and simultaneously stabilizes the electrode/electrolyte interphase as a protecting layer. Because of these merits, the phosphorized 3D porous Ni3 S2 (3D P-Ni3 S2 ) electrode is capable of delivering an ultra-stable capacity of 387.5 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , and a high capacity retention of 85.3% even at a high current density of 1.6 A g-1 .

OBJECTIVES: Endovascular treatment (EVT) is an alternative method used to treat isolated dissection of the celiac artery (IDCA). However, only a few mid-term results have been reported. This study aimed to analyze and compare the outcomes of endovascular and non-operative therapies for IDCA. METHODS: Data from a cohort of consecutive IDCA patients enrolled in the study hospital between April 2012 and September 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic information, imaging features, treatment modalities, and follow-up results of celiac artery remodeling and adverse events were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 87 patients were enrolled in the study. Stents were deployed in 68 patients, and non-operative treatment (blood pressure control and pain management) was continued in the remaining 19 patients who did not receive stenting; among these 19 patients, EVT failed in 6. The mean follow-up period was 37.3 (range, 10-85 months) and 44.0 (range, 9-80 months) months in the EVT and non-operative groups, respectively. During follow-up, the overall complete remodeling (absence of residual dissection with no false lumen or no intramural thrombus) rate was significantly higher in the EVT group than in the non-operative group (87.3% vs 7.1%, p<0.001). The incomplete remodeling (improved true lumen with malabsorption or partial thrombosis of the false lumen) rate was not significantly different between the EVT and non-operative groups (6.3% vs 14.3%; p=0.2984). Meanwhile, the adverse event-free survival rates were 89.0%, 67.0%, and 67.0% at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively, in the EVT group compared with 39.7% and 29.8% at 1 and 3 years in the non-operative group (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: EVT for IDCA may be considered an effective management option with a favorable clinical success rate, an encouraging complete remodeling rate, and a satisfactory adverse event-free survival rate. However, further evaluation with a long-term follow-up is required. CLINICAL IMPACT: Endovascular intervention for isolated dissection of the celiac artery has attracted inadequate attention. In this retrospective study with comparative analysis of endovascular versus conservative therapy for isolated dissection of the celiac artery patients, a better complete remodeling rate and a higher adverse event-free survival rate were observed in the endovascular treatment (EVT) group during follow-up, indicating that EVT could be an effective management option for isolated dissection of the celiac artery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of covered stents for treatment of visceral artery aneurysms (VAA). METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study included patients with VAAs who were treated with covered stents between January 2015 and December 2020. A total of 65 patients (mean age, 58 years; range, 27-89 years) with 70 VAAs (60 true aneurysms [86%], 10 pseudoaneurysms [14%]) were included. Of the 65, 48 patients (74%) were asymptomatic. Patient demographics, endovascular treatments, and follow-up results were analyzed. RESULTS: All patients received covered stents. The mean diameter was 2.9 cm (range, 1.0-7.6 cm) for symptomatic aneurysms and 2.5 cm (range, 1.0-9.0 cm) for asymptomatic aneurysms. Of the asymptomatic aneurysms, 89% had a saccular shape. The mean distance between the ostium of the artery in which the aneurysm occurred and the aneurysm was 3.9 cm (median, 3.0 cm; range, 0.5-10 cm). Additional coil embolization was used in 7 aneurysms (10%). During the procedure, 68 (97%) aneurysms were completely excluded, while 2 (3%) had a Type Ib endoleak. After a mean follow-up of 20 months (range, 1-75 months), all patients were asymptomatic. Four endoleaks were recorded and left for close observation. Four stents (7%) had mild restenosis, while the rest of the stents were patent. CONCLUSIONS: Placement of covered stents in patients with VAAs excluded aneurysms and maintained artery patency.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery (SIDSMA) occurs when a tear in the inner layer of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) allows blood to flow between the layers of the SMA, forcing the layers apart, and creating two lumens. Abdominal pain is the most prevalent clinical manifestation. Other people may have no symptoms or experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or blood in their stools. For people with SIDSMA who are not suspected of intestinal necrosis or intra-abdominal bleeding, medical treatment and endovascular therapy are the main treatment options. There is no consensus on the optimum first-line management strategy. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of endovascular therapy versus medical treatment for spontaneous isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery (SIDSMA). SEARCH METHODS: We used standard, extensive Cochrane search methods. The latest search date was 3 August 2021. SELECTION CRITERIA: We planned to include all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which compared endovascular therapy and medical treatments for SIDSMA. We planned to exclude studies where participants were treated with open surgery. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: We used standard Cochrane methods. Our primary outcomes were endovascular intervention rate and recurrent abdominal pain. Our secondary outcomes were open surgery rate, remodeling rate of SMA, new aneurysm formation of SMA, SMA occlusion, new dissection of SMA, death, symptom relief rate and complications of endovascular therapy. We planned to use GRADE to assess certainty of evidence for each outcome. MAIN RESULTS: We did not identify any RCTs to include in any analysis. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: We were not able to include any RCTs that compared endovascular therapy versus medical treatment in people with SIDSMA. High-quality RCTs that evaluate the benefits and harms of these interventions are needed to help determine the optimal strategy for managing SIDSMA.

AIM: This study aimed to compare the 5-year overall survival (OS) and 5-year DFS disease-free survival (DFS) of abdominal radical hysterectomy (ARH) and radiochemotherapy (R-CT) for stage IIA2 (FIGO 2018) cervical cancer patients. METHODS: Based on this multicenter, retrospective cohort study based on data from the clinical diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer in China (Four C) database, 609 cases with 2018 FIGO stage IIA2 cervical cancer from 2004 to 2018 were reviewed. The 5-year OS and 5-year DFS of patients with either of the two treatment methods were compared by means of a multivariate Cox regression model and the log-rank method in the total study population and after propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS: We selected 609 of 63,926 patients and found that R-CT was associated with a significantly worse 5-year OS (71.8% vs. 95.3%, P < 0.001; hazard ratio (HR) = 6.596, 95% CI 3.524-12.346) and 5-year DFS (69.4% vs. 91.4%, P < 0.001; HR = 4.132, 95% CI 2.570-6.642, P < 0.001) than ARH in the total study population. After matching (n = 230/230), among FIGO 2018 IIA2 patients, the 5-year OS and DFS were lower in the R-CT group than in the ARH group (OS: 73.9% vs. 94.7%, P < 0.001; HR = 5.633, 95% CI 2.826-11.231, P < 0.001; DFS: 69.2% vs. 91.1%, P < 0.001; HR = 3.978, 95% CI 2.336-6.773, P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with stage FIGO 2018 IIA2 cervical cancer, ARH offers better 5-year OS and DFS outcomes than R-CT; however, due to the inherent biases of retrospective studies, this needs to be confirmed by randomized trials.

PURPOSE: To compare oncological outcomes of laparoscopic radical hysterectomy (LRH) and abdominal radical hysterectomy (ARH) for low-risk cervical cancer. METHOD: We retrospectively compared the 3-year overall survival (OS) and 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) of 1269 low-risk cervical cancer patients with FIGO 2009 stage IA2, IB1 and IIA1 with a tumour size < 2 cm, no lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI), superficial stromal invasion and no lymph node involvement on imaging, and who received LRH (n = 672) and ARH (n = 597) between 2009 and 2018 at 47 hospitals. RESULTS: In the total study population, LRH and ARH showed similar 3-year OS (98.6% vs. 98.9%, P = 0.850) and DFS rates (95.7% vs. 96.4%, P = 0.285). LRH was not associated with worse 3-year OS (HR 0.897, 95% CI 0.287-2.808, P = 0.852) or DFS (HR 0.692, 95% CI 0.379-1.263, P = 0.230) as determined by multivariable analysis. After propensity score matching in 1269 patients, LRH (n = 551) and ARH (n = 551) still showed similar 3-year OS (98.4% vs. 98.8%, P = 0.704) and DFS rates (95.5% vs. 96.3%, P = 0.249). LRH was still not associated with worse 3-year OS (HR 0.816, 95% CI 0.262-2.541, P = 0.725) or DFS (HR 0.694, 95% CI 0.371-1.296, P = 0.251). CONCLUSION: Among patients with low-risk cervical cancers < 2 cm, no LVSI, superficial stromal invasion, and no lymph node involvement on imaging, no significant differences were observed in 3-year OS or DFS rates between LRH and ARH.
