RESUMO

The combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials with non-2D materials (quantum dots, nanowires and bulk materials), i.e. mixed-dimensional van der Waals (md-vdW) heterostructures endow 2D materials with remarkable electronics properties. However, it remains a big challenge to synthesize md-vdW heterostructures because of the difference of crystal symmetry between 2D and non-2D materials. Meanwhile, it is difficult to initiate the nucleation due to the lack of chemical active sites on chemical inert surfaces of 2D materials. Herein, we design a general chemical vapor deposition method for synthesizing a broad class of md-vdW heterostructures with well-aligned hexagonal symmetry including MoS2/FeS, MoS2/CoS, MoS2/MnS, MoS2/ZnS, Mo(SxSe1-x)2/ZnSxSe1-x, Mo(SxSe1-x)2/CdSxSe1-x. Combining with DFT calculation, we find that the hexagonal symmetry and the centered clusters of MoS2and Mo(SxSe1-x)2nanoflakes are two crucial factors to launch the hexagonally oriented growth and nucleation of non-2D materials on 2D materials. Our discovery opens an opportunity for the versatile hetero-integration of 2D materials and allows systematic investigation of physical properties in a wide variety of md-vdW heterostructures.

RESUMO

Intrinsic Ge nanowires (NWs) with a Ge core covered by a thick Ge oxide shell are utilized to achieve nanoscale field-effect transistor nonvolatile memories, which show a large memory window and a high ON/OFF ratio with good retention. The retainable surface charge trapping is considered to be responsible for the memory effect, and the Ge oxide shell plays a key role as the insulating tunneling dielectric which must be thick enough to prevent stored surface charges from leaking out. Annealing the device in air is demonstrated to be a simple and effective way to attain thick Ge oxide on the Ge NW surface, and the Ge-NW-based memory corresponding to thick Ge oxide exhibits a much better retention capability compared with the case of thin Ge oxide.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical mechanisms of treatment of thoracolumbar compression fracture with pedicle screws at injury level based on a three-dimensional finite element method. We constructed one three-dimensional finite element model of T11-L1 in a patient with a compression fracture of the T12 vertebral body(anterior edges of vertebral body were compressed to 1/2, and kyphosis Cobb angle was 18.6°) fixed by four pedicle screws and another model fixed by six pedicle screws at the injured vertebrae, and then assigned different forces to the two models to account for axial compression, flexion, extension, left lateral bending, and rightward axial rotation by Ansys software. After different loading forces were applied to the models, we recorded stress measurements on the vertebral pedicle screws, as well as the maximum displacement of T11. The stress distribution suggested that stress concentration was appreciable at the root of the pedicle screws under different loading modalities. Under axial compression, flexion, extension, left lateral bending, and rightward axial rotation load, the stress for the superior screw was significantly greater than the stress for the inferior screw (P < 0.05). The stress in the six pedicle screw fixation model was significantly decreased compared to the four screw interbody fusion model (P < 0.05), but the maximum displacement of T11 between two models under different loadings was not statistically different. The use of pedicle screws at injured vertebral bodies may optimize internal fixation load and reduce the incidence of broken screws.

RESUMO

Direct optical data coding in an electronic device is meaningful for photonic technology. Herein, we report electronic memory in a graphene/SrTiO3 heterostructure, which presents the all-optical logic operation (encoding and decoding). The underlying physics have been elucidated in which the synergistic effect of surface localization with interface band bending is responsible for optical encoding and decoding in the electronic memory device of the graphene/SrTiO3 heterostructure. Further, we demonstrate a robust retention and synaptic-like processing of optical signals, which may lead to significant applications in neuromorphic imaging sensors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Complications in posterior pedicle screw fixation using a conventional posterior approach for thoracolumbar fractures include vertebral height loss, kyphosis relapse and breakage, or loosening of instrumentation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effects of transpedicular bone grafting and pedicle screw fixation in injured vertebrae using a paraspinal approach for thoracolumbar fractures. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 50 patients with thoracolumbar fractures treated with transpedicular bone grafting and pedicle screw fixation in injured vertebrae using a paraspinal approach. Operative time, blood loss, visual analog scale (VAS) scores for back pain, and the relative height and Cobb angle of the fractured vertebrae were measured. RESULTS: The average operative time was 71.8 min, and the blood loss was 155 ml. Postoperative VAS scores were significantly lower than preoperative scores (P = 0.08), but there was no difference between 1 week and 1 year postoperatively (P = 0.18). The postoperative relative heights of the fractured vertebrae were higher than the preoperative heights (P = 0.001, 0.005, 0.001), but there were no differences between 1 week and 1 or 2 years postoperatively (P = 0.24/0.16). The postoperative Cobb angles were larger than the preoperative angles (P = 0.002, 0.007, 0.001), but there were no differences between 1 week and 1 or 2 years postoperatively (P = 0.19/0.23). CONCLUSIONS: Transpedicular bone grafting and pedicle screw fixation in injured vertebrae using a paraspinal approach for thoracolumbar fractures achieved satisfactory results and can restore vertebral height, increase the stability of the anterior and middle columns of injured vertebrae, and decrease the risk of back pain.

RESUMO

Anatase hierarchical TiO2 with innovative designs (hollow microspheres with exposed high-energy {001} crystal facets, hollow microspheres without {001} crystal facets, and solid microspheres without {001} crystal facets) were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method and characterized. Based on these materials, gas sensors were fabricated and used for gas-sensing tests. It was found that the sensor based on hierarchical TiO2 hollow microspheres with exposed high-energy {001} crystal facets exhibited enhanced acetone sensing properties compared to the sensors based on the other two materials due to the exposing of high-energy {001} crystal facets and special hierarchical hollow structure. First-principle calculations were performed to illustrate the sensing mechanism, which suggested that the adsorption process of acetone molecule on TiO2 surface was spontaneous, and the adsorption on high-energy {001} crystal facets would be more stable than that on the normally exposed {101} crystal facets. Further characterization indicated that the {001} surface was highly reactive for the adsorption of active oxygen species, which was also responsible for the enhanced sensing performance. The present studies revealed the crystal-facets-dependent gas-sensing properties of TiO2 and provided a new insight into improving the gas sensing performance by designing hierarchical hollow structure with special-crystal-facets exposure.

RESUMO

The precise control of the morphology and crystal shape of MoS2 nanostructures is of particular importance for their application in nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we describe a single step route for the synthesis of monolayer-by-monolayer stacked pyramid-like MoS2 nanodots on monolayered MoS2 flakes using a chemical vapor deposition method. First-principles calculations demonstrated that the bandgap of the pyramid-like MoS2 nanodot is a direct bandgap. Enhanced local photoluminescence emission was observed in the pyramid-like MoS2 nanodot, in comparison with monolayered MoS2 flakes. The findings presented here provide new opportunities to tailor the physical properties of MoS2via morphology-controlled synthesis.

RESUMO

High-quality and wafer-scale graphene on insulating gate dielectrics is a prerequisite for graphene electronic applications. For such applications, graphene is typically synthesized and then transferred to a desirable substrate for subsequent device processing. Direct production of graphene on substrates without transfer is highly desirable for simplified device processing. However, graphene synthesis directly on substrates suitable for device applications, though highly demanded, remains unattainable and challenging. Here, we report a simple, transfer-free method capable of synthesizing graphene directly on dielectric substrates at temperatures as low as 600 °C using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as the carbon source. Significantly, N-doping and patterning of graphene can be readily and concurrently achieved by this growth method. Remarkably, the graphene films directly grown on glass attained a small sheet resistance of 550 Ω/sq and a high transmittance of 91.2%. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated on N-doped graphene on glass achieved a current density of 4.0 mA/cm(2) at 8 V compared to 2.6 mA/cm(2) for OLEDs similarly fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass, demonstrating that the graphene thus prepared may have potential to serve as a transparent electrode to replace ITO.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of cervical spinal posture and prior loading history on spinal compressive strength. METHODS: Twelve human cadaver cervical spines were harvested and dissected into 24 motion segments containing 2 vertebrae and the intervertebral discs (C3,4 and C5,6). Compressive loads were applied on so that the effects of 2 loading conditions (dehydrated, superhydrated) and 2 postures (neutral trunk, flexed) could be examined. Dissection techniques and X-rays were used to determine the tissue injuries. RESULTS: Specimens had a lower ultimate compressive strength (P <0.001) in flexed posture than in neutral trunk posture. Under the injury loading in neutral trunk posture, superhydrated specimens had a lower strength (29%, P <0.01) than dehydrated specimens did. CONCLUSION: The spine may be more prone to injury early in the morning when the discs are at highest level of hydration and the cervical spine is in fully flexed posture.

RESUMO

Micrometer-sized single-crystalline In2Se3 nanosheets are synthesized by epitaxial growth from In2Se3nanowires. The In2Se3 nanosheets possess anisotropic structural configuration with intralayer covalent bonding and interlayer van der Waals bonding. Phototransistors based on the In2Se3 nanosheets are realized, and the devices show high photoresponsivity and high photo On/Off ratio up to two orders. The photo-gating effect can be modulated by the gate bias, indicating potential utility of the In2Se3 nanosheets in a variety of optoelectronic applications.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of a rat model of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Adult male rats were divided into the operation and sham operation groups. The operation group was comprised of the rat models of LSS. Walking distance and BDNF expression levels in DRG were measured in the two groups at different time points. The total BDNF protein levels and positive cell mean optical density (MOD) values in the operation group were significantly higher at each time point compared with that of the sham operation and preoperative control groups (P<0.05). The total BDNF protein levels and MOD values following sport in the operation group were significantly higher compared with those prior to sport (P<0.05). In the sham operation group, BDNF protein levels and MOD values before and after sport at each time point showed no significant differences than those of the operation group (P>0.05). Moreover, BDNF protein levels and MOD values in the operation group indicated a negative correlation with walking distance. The present study demonstrated that the expression of BDNF in rat models of LSS increased with time and was associated with a decrease in walking distance. BDNF was therefore important for the process of intermittent claudication caused by LSS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness of transpedicular intervertebral bone graft and pedicle screws fixation in injured vertebrae for the treatment of thoracolumbar fractures. METHODS: Between February 2007 and January 2009, 25 patients with thoracolumbar fractures were treated by posterior short-segment fixation combined with transpedicular intervertebral bone graft and pedicle screw fixation in injured vertebrae. There were 18 males and 7 females with a mean age of 46 years (range, 28-63 years). The injured vertebrae were located at T10 in 1 case, T11 in 2 cases, T12 in 8 cases, L1 in 6 cases, L2 in 6 cases, L3 in 1 case, and L4 in 1 case. According to Denis classification, there were 14 cases of burst fractures and 11 cases of compression fractures. Based on Frankel classifications, 2 cases were rated as grade A, 4 cases as grade B, 8 cases as grade C, 7 cases as grade D, and 4 cases as grade E. The time between injury and operation was 6 hours to 7 days (mean, 4.6 days). The X-ray film was taken to measure the relative height of fractured vertebrae and Cobb angle, and Frankel classification was conducted to evaluate the function recovery of the spinal cord. RESULTS: The operations were performed successfully, and incisions healed primarily. All the patients were followed up 12-25 months (mean, 16 months). CT and X-ray films showed good bone graft healing and no loosening or breakage of screws and rods. The relative height of fractured vertebrae were 56.8% +/- 15.6% at preoperation, 91.2% +/- 10.7% immediately after operation, and 89.6% +/- 10.3% at 1 year after operation, showing significant differences between preoperation and postoperation (P < 0.01), while no significant difference between immediately after operation and 1 year after operation. The Cobb angles were (18.2 +/- 2.6), (7.5 +/- 1.4), and (8.7 +/- 1.1) degrees, respectively, showing significant differences between preoperation and postoperation (P < 0.01), while no significant difference between immediately and 1 year after operation. At 1 year after operation, the neural function in 16 cases was improved 1-3 grades. CONCLUSION: Treatment of thoracolumbar fractures with transpedicular intervertebral bone graft and pedicle screw fixation in injured vertebrae has satisfactory effectiveness, which can reconstruct vertebral body height, increase the stability of anterior and middle column of the injured vertebrae, and prevent height loss of the injured vertebrae and loosening of instrumentation.
