BACKGROUND: While circulating metabolites have been increasingly linked to cancer risk, the causality underlying these associations remains largely uninterrogated. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to evaluate the potential causal relationship between 913 plasma metabolites and the risk of seven cancers among European-ancestry individuals. Data on variant-metabolite associations were obtained from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of plasma metabolites among 14,296 subjects. Data on variant-cancer associations were gathered from large-scale GWAS consortia for breast (N = 266,081), colorectal (N = 185,616), lung (N = 85,716), ovarian (N = 63,347), prostate (N = 140,306), renal cell (N = 31,190), and testicular germ cell (N = 28,135) cancers. MR analyses were performed with the inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method as the primary strategy to identify significant associations at Bonferroni-corrected P < 0.05 for each cancer type separately. Significant associations were subjected to additional scrutiny via weighted median MR, Egger regression, MR-Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO), and reverse MR analyses. Replication analyses were performed using an independent dataset from a plasma metabolite GWAS including 8,129 participants of European ancestry. RESULTS: We identified 94 significant associations, suggesting putative causal associations between 66 distinct plasma metabolites and the risk of seven cancers. Remarkably, 68.2% (45) of these metabolites were each associated with the risk of a specific cancer. Among the 66 metabolites, O-methylcatechol sulfate and 4-vinylphenol sulfate demonstrated the most pronounced positive and negative associations with cancer risk, respectively. Genetically proxied plasma levels of these two metabolites were significantly associated with the risk of lung cancer and renal cell cancer, with an odds ratio and 95% confidence interval of 2.81 (2.33-3.37) and 0.49 (0.40-0.61), respectively. None of these 94 associations was biased by weak instruments, horizontal pleiotropy, or reverse causation. Further, 64 of these 94 were eligible for replication analyses, and 54 (84.4%) showed P < 0.05 with association patterns consistent with those shown in primary analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Our study unveils plausible causal relationships between 66 plasma metabolites and cancer risk, expanding our understanding of the role of circulating metabolites in cancer genetics and etiology. These findings hold promise for enhancing cancer risk assessment and prevention strategies, meriting further exploration.

Porous carbon materials with hollow structure, on account of the extraordinary morphology, reveal fascinating prospects in lithium-ion batteries, electrocatalysis, etc. However, collapse in ultrathin carbon spheres due to insufficient rigidity in such thin materials obstructs further enhanced capability. Based on hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCPs) with sufficient pore structure and rigid framework, a new bottom-up strategy is proposed to construct SiO2 @HCPs directly from aromatic monomers. Heteroatom and function groups can be facilely introduced to the skeleton. The thickness of HCPs' wall can be tuned from 9 to 20 nm, which is much thinner than that of hollow sphere synthesized by the traditional method, and the sample with a thickness of 20 nm shows the highest surface area of 1633 m2 g-1 . The oxygen reduction reaction is conducted and the CoNHCS electrocatalysts with an ultrathin thickness of 5 nm display higher half-wave potential than those of bulk samples, even better than commercial Pt/C electrode. On account of the hollow structure, the relative current density loss of electrocatalysts is only 4.1% in comparison with 27.7% in Pt/C electrode during the 15 000 s test, indicating an obvious higher long-term stability. The new strategy to construct hollow HCPs may shed light on efficient chemical catalysis, drug delivery, and electrocatalysis.

BACKGROUND: A groin hernia is a collective name for inguinal and femoral hernias, which can present acutely with incarceration or strangulation of the hernia sac content, requiring emergency treatment. Timely repair of emergency groin hernias is crucial due to the risk of reduced blood supply and thus damage to the bowel, but the optimal surgical approach is unclear. While mesh repair is the standard treatment for elective hernia surgery, using mesh for emergency groin hernia repair remains controversial due to the risk of surgical site infection. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of mesh compared with non-mesh in emergency groin hernia repair in adult patients with an inguinal or femoral hernia. SEARCH METHODS: On 5 August 2022, we searched the following databases: CENTRAL, MEDLINE Ovid, and Embase Ovid, as well as two trial registers for ongoing and completed trials. Additionally, we performed forward and backward citation searches for the included trials and relevant review articles. We searched without any language or publication restrictions. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing mesh with non-mesh repair in emergency groin hernia surgery in adults. We included any mesh and any non-mesh repairs. All studies fulfilling the study, participant, and intervention criteria were included irrespective of reported outcomes. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: We used standard Cochrane methodology. We presented dichotomous data as risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). We based missing data analysis on best- and worst-case scenarios. For outcomes with sufficiently low heterogeneity, we performed meta-analyses using the random-effects model. We analysed subgroups when feasible, including the degree of contamination. We used RoB 2 for risk of bias assessment, and summarised the certainty of evidence using GRADE. MAIN RESULTS: We included 15 trials randomising 1241 participants undergoing emergency groin hernia surgery with either mesh (626 participants) or non-mesh hernia repair (615 participants). The studies were conducted in China, the Middle East, and South Asia. Most patients were men, and most participants had an inguinal hernia (41 participants had femoral hernias). The mean/median age in the mesh group ranged from 35 to 70 years, and from 41 to 69 years in the non-mesh group. All studies were performed in a hospital emergency setting (tertiary care) and lasted for 11 to 139 months, with a median study duration of 31 months. The majority of the studies only included participants with clean to clean-contaminated surgical fields. For all outcomes, we considered the certainty of the evidence to be very low, mainly downgraded due to high risk of bias (due to deviations from intended intervention and missing outcome data), indirectness, and imprecision. Mesh hernia repair may have no effect on or slightly increase the risk of 30-day surgical site infections (RR 1.66, 95% CI 0.96 to 2.88; I² = 21%; 2 studies, 454 participants) when compared with non-mesh hernia repair, but the evidence is very uncertain. The evidence is also very uncertain about the effect of mesh hernia repair compared with non-mesh hernia repair on 30-day mortality (RR 1.38, 95% CI 0.58 to 3.28; 1 study, 208 participants). In summary, the results showed 70 more (from 5 fewer to 200 more) surgical site infections and 29 more (from 32 fewer to 175 more) deaths within 30 days of mesh hernia repair per 1000 participants compared with non-mesh hernia repair. The evidence is very uncertain about 90-day surgical site infections after mesh versus non-mesh hernia repair (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.15 to 6.64; 1 study, 60 participants; very low-certainty evidence). No 30-day recurrences were recorded, and mesh hernia repair may not reduce recurrence within one year (RR 0.19, 95% CI 0.04 to 1.03; I² = 0%; 2 studies, 104 participants; very low-certainty evidence). Within 30 days of hernia repair, no meshes were removed from clean to clean-contaminated fields, but 6.7% of meshes (1 study, 208 participants) were removed from contaminated to dirty surgical fields. Among the four studies reporting 90-day mesh removal, no events occurred. We were not able to identify any studies reporting complications classified according to the Clavien-Dindo Classification or reoperation for complications within 30 days of repair. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that in terms of 30-day surgical site infections, 30-day mortality, and hernia recurrence within one year, the evidence for the use of mesh hernia repair compared with non-mesh hernia repair in emergency groin hernia surgery is very uncertain. Unfortunately, firm conclusions cannot be drawn due to very low-certainty evidence and meta-analyses based on small-sized and low-quality studies. There is a need for future high-quality RCTs or high-quality registry-based studies if RCTs are unfeasible.

Iron overload and oxidative stress have been reported to contribute to ferroptosis in endometriotic lesions. However, the possible roles of iron overload on macrophages in endometriosis (EMs) remain unknown. Based on recent reports by single-cell sequencing data of endometriosis, here we found significant upregulations of ferroptosis-associated genes in the macrophage of the endometriotic lesion. Additionally, there was an elevated expression of HMOX1, FTH1, and FTL in macrophages of peritoneal fluid in EMs, as well as iron accumulation in the endometriotic lesions. Notably, cyst fluid significantly up-regulated levels of intracellular iron and ferroptosis in Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)-stimulated THP-1 cells. Additionally, high iron-induced ferroptosis obviously reduced PMA-stimulated THP-1 cells' phagocytosis and increased the expression of angiogenic cytokines, such as vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and interleukin 8 (IL8). Baicalein, a potential anti-ferroptosis compound, increased GPX4 expression, significantly inhibited ferroptosis, and restored phagocytosis of THP-1 cells in vitro. Collectively, our study reveals that ferroptosis triggered by high iron in cyst fluid promotes the development of EMs by impairing macrophage phagocytosis and producing more angiogenic cytokines (e.g., IL8 and VEGFA). Baicalein displays the potential for the treatment of EMs, especially in patients with high ferroptosis and low phagocytosis of macrophages.

Metal deposition with photocatalyst is a promising way to surmount the restriction of fast e- /h+ recombination to improve the photocatalytic performance. However, the improvement remains limited by the existing strategies adopted for depositing metal particles due to the serious aggregation and large unconnected area on photocatalyst surface. Here, a strategy is proposed by directly grafting hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) on TiO2 surface to construct Pd-HCPs-TiO2 composite with uniform dispersion of ultrafine Pd nanoparticles on HCPs surface. This composite with surface area of 373 m2 g-1 exhibits improved photocatalytic CO2 conversion efficiency to CH4 with an evolution rate of 237.4 µmol g-1 h-1 and selectivity of more than 99.9%. The enhancement can be ascribed to the grafted porous HCPs with high surface area and N heteroatom on TiO2 surface for the stabilization of Pd nanoparticles, favoring the electron transfer and CO2 adsorption for selective CH4 production. This strategy may hold the promise for design and construction of porous organic polymer with semiconductor for efficient photocatalytic conversion.

This study aimed to research the clinical effect of Xuebijing combined with thymosin α1 on patients with severe pneumonia complicated with sepsis, and its effect on serum inflammatory factors. For this purpose, 81 cases of severe pneumonia complicated with sepsis were collected. All patients were given early treatments. 41 cases who received Xuebijing injection by intravenous drip were selected as the control group. 40 cases who were treated through subcutaneous injection of thymosin α1 based on Xuebijing injection by intravenous drip were selected as the study group. The body temperature, respiration, heart rate, leukocytes, other general conditions, blood gas indexes, serum IL-6, TNF-α and CRP levels, bacterial clearance rate and therapy effect were recorded and compared before and after treatment. Results showed that after treatment, the body temperature, respiration, heart rate, leukocytes and other general conditions of the study group were lower than those in the control group (all p<0.05). The blood gas indexes pH and PaCO2 levels of the study group were lower than those of the control group. The levels of serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), serum tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the study group were lower than those in the control group (all p<0.05). The bacterial clearance rate of the study group was lower than that of the control group (all p<0.05). The total effective rate of treatment of patients in the study group was higher than that of patients in the control group (all p<0.05). In general, Thymosin α1 and Xuebijing injection can improve the therapy effect of severe pneumonia complicated with sepsis, improve the hemorheology condition of patients, effectively remove bacteria and reduce the expression level of serum CRP, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8 and other inflammatory factors in patients, which is worthy of clinical promotion.

Clay is found in some countries all over the world. It usually has low compressive strength and cannot be used as a bearing material for subgrade soil. In this paper, the influence of basicity on a metakaolin-based polymer binder to improve clay was studied. The effects of the molar concentration of the alkali activator, different concentration of the metakaolin-based geopolymer and curing time on unconfined compressive strength were studied. The alkali activator-to-ash ratio was maintained at 0.7. The percentage of metakaolin added to the soil relative to metakaolin and soil mixture was 6%, 8%, 10% and 12%. The sodium hydroxide concentrations are 2M, 4M, 6M and 8M. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) was tested on days 3, 7, 14 and 28, respectively. Compared with original clay, the results show that the unconfined compressive strength increases with the increase in metakaolin content and molar concentration of NaOH. The maximum compressive strength of the sample with NaOH concentration of 8M and percentage of 12% was 4109 kN on the 28th day, which is about 112% higher than that of the original clay. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the cementing compound covered the clay particles due to the reaction of the geopolymer with the clay, resulting in the formation of adhesive particles. The main purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness and stability of metakaolin-based geopolymer binder polymerization under normal temperature and a strong alkali environment. The results can provide parameters for the application and promotion of metakaolin-based geopolymers in soil improvement engineering.

Evidence is mounting that abnormal vascular remodeling (VR) is a vital pathological event that precedes many cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This provides us with a new research perspective that VR can be a pivotal target for CVD treatment and prevention. However, the current drugs for treating CVD do not fundamentally reverse VR and repair vascular function. The reason may be that a complicated regulatory network is formed between the various signaling pathways involved in VR. Recently, ginsenoside, the main active substance of ginseng, has become increasingly the focus of many researchers for its multiple targets, multiple pathways, and few side effects. Several data have revealed that ginsenosides can improve VR caused by vasodilation dysfunction, abnormal vascular structure and blood pressure. This review is intended to discuss the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of ginsenosides in some diseases involved in VR. Besides, we herein also give a new and contradictory insight into intracellular and molecular signaling of ginsenosides in all kinds of vascular cells. Most importantly, we also discuss the feasibility of ginsenosides Rb1/Rg1/Rg3 in drug development by combining the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of ginsenosides, and provide a pharmacological basis for the development of ginsenosides in clinical applications.

Nowadays, similar strategies have been used for the treatment and prevention of acute stroke in both diabetes mellitus (DM) and non-DM populations. These strategies were analyzed to provide an experimental basis for the clinical prevention and treatment of stroke in patients both with and without DM. Tree shrews were randomly divided into control, DM, ischemic stroke (IS), and DMIS groups with 18 animals in each group. Serum biochemical indicators were used to assess metabolic status. Neural tissue damage was determined using triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining, H-E staining, and electron microscopy. Differential gene expression of neural tissue between the DM and control groups and the IS and DMIS groups was measured using RNA-seq analysis. The serum glucose levels of the DM and DMIS groups were significantly higher than other groups. In the DMIS group, the infarct size was significantly larger than in the IS group (19.56 ± 1.25%), with a more obvious abnormal ultrastructure of neural cells. RNA-seq analysis showed that the expression of IL-8, C-C motif chemokine 2 (CCL2), and alpha-1-antichymotrypsin was significantly higher in the DM group than in the control group. The CCL7, ATP-binding cassette sub-family A member 12, and adhesion G protein-coupled receptor E2 levels were significantly higher in the DMIS group than in the IS group. For the prevention and treatment of stroke in patients with DM, reducing the inflammatory state of the nervous system may reduce the incidence of stroke and improve the prognosis of neurological function after IS.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging contaminants that pose a health risk to humans worldwide. Little information on ARGs in bee honey is available. This study profiles ARGs in bee honey samples produced in China, the biggest producer in the world. Of 317 known ARGs encoding resistance to 8 classes of antibiotics, 212 were found in collected honey samples by a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction approach. Occurrence frequencies of genes providing resistance to FCA (fluoroquinolone, quinolone, florfenicol, chloramphenicol, and amphenicol) and aminoglycosides were 21.0% and 18.5%, respectively. Frequencies of genes encoding efflux pumps were 42.5% and those of destructase genes 36.6%, indicating that these two mechanisms were predominant for resistance. Nine plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes were detected. Of the nine transposase genes known to be involved in antibiotic resistance, eight were found in the samples examined, with tnpA-4, tnpA-5, and tnpA-6 being more abundant. The abundance of the transposase genes was associated with genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines (r = 0.648, p < 0.01), macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (r = 0.642, p < 0.01), FCA (r = 0.517, p < 0.01), and aminoglycosides (r = 0.401, 0.01 < p < 0.05). This is the first study on the abundance and diversity of ARGs in Chinese bee honey products. These findings suggest that bee honey may be a significant source of ARGs that might pose threat to public health. Further research is required to collect more samples in diverse geographic regions in China to make a more comprehensive judgment of ARG in bee honey.

Ultrasonic guided waves are sensitive to many different types of defects and have been studied for defect recognition in rail. However, most fault recognition algorithms need to extract features from the time domain, frequency domain, or time-frequency domain based on experience or professional knowledge. This paper proposes a new method for identifying many different types of rail defects. The segment principal components analysis (S-PCA) is developed to extract characteristics from signals collected by sensors located at different positions. Then, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model is used to identify different defects depending on the features extracted. Combining simulations and experiments of the rails with different kinds of defects are established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed defect identification techniques, such as crack, corrosion, and transverse crack under the shelling. There are nine channels of the excitation-reception to acquire guided wave detection signals. The results show that the defect classification accuracy rates are 96.29% and 96.15% for combining multiple signals, such as the method of single-point excitation and multi-point reception, or the method of multi-point excitation and reception at a single point.

Warming can accelerate the decomposition of soil organic matter and stimulate the release of soil greenhouse gases (GHGs), but to what extent soil release of methane (CH4 ) and nitrous oxide (N2 O) may contribute to soil C loss for driving climate change under warming remains unresolved. By synthesizing 1,845 measurements from 164 peer-reviewed publications, we show that around 1.5°C (1.16-2.01°C) of experimental warming significantly stimulates soil respiration by 12.9%, N2 O emissions by 35.2%, CH4 emissions by 23.4% from rice paddies, and by 37.5% from natural wetlands. Rising temperature increases CH4 uptake of upland soils by 13.8%. Warming-enhanced emission of soil CH4 and N2 O corresponds to an overall source strength of 1.19, 1.84, and 3.12 Pg CO2 -equivalent/year under 1°C, 1.5°C, and 2°C warming scenarios, respectively, interacting with soil C loss of 1.60 Pg CO2 /year in terms of contribution to climate change. The warming-induced rise in soil CH4 and N2 O emissions (1.84 Pg CO2 -equivalent/year) could reduce mitigation potential of terrestrial net ecosystem production by 8.3% (NEP, 22.25 Pg CO2 /year) under warming. Soil respiration and CH4 release are intensified following the mean warming threshold of 1.5°C scenario, as compared to soil CH4 uptake and N2 O release with a reduced and less positive response, respectively. Soil C loss increases to a larger extent under soil warming than under canopy air warming. Warming-raised emission of soil GHG increases with the intensity of temperature rise but decreases with the extension of experimental duration. This synthesis takes the lead to quantify the ecosystem C and N cycling in response to warming and advances our capacity to predict terrestrial feedback to climate change under projected warming scenarios.

BACKGROUND Repetition disorder can be used as an important criterion for aphasia classification, and damaged arcuate fasciculus in the dominate hemisphere has been reported to be closely related to repetition disorder, but the underlying neurological mechanism remains unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifteen stroke patients with poststroke aphasia and 9 healthy controls were included in the study. The value of fractional anisotropy (FA) in the dominate arcuate fasciculus in stroke patients and healthy controls were measured using DTI. We also assessed their repetition dysfunction with the Aphasia Battery of Chinese (ABC) assessment and calculated the correlation between the FA values in the dominate arcuate fasciculus and ABC scores of word repetition and sentence repetition. RESULTS There was a moderate correlation between the total score of repetition evaluation and the FA value of injured arcuate fasciculus in the dominant hemisphere (r=0.551, P=0.033). We found no correlation between the score of word repetition and the FA value of injured arcuate fasciculus in the dominant hemisphere (r=0.330, P=0.230), but there was a strong correlation between the score of sentence repetition and the FA value of injured arcuate fasciculus in the dominant hemisphere (r=0.795, P≤0.001). CONCLUSIONS We found that unintegrated left arcuate fasciculus might be related to the repetition dysfunction after stroke, especially sentence repetition deficit, which suggests that sentence repetition evaluation could be used to indicate the integrity of the arcuate fasciculus in the dominant hemisphere after stroke.

This study aims to compare the prostate cancer detection rate between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) cognitive fusion targeted biopsy and systematic biopsy. A total of 614 patients who underwent transrectal prostate biopsy during 2016-2018 with multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) were included. All patients with a PI-RADS V2 score ≥ 3 accepted both targeted biopsy and systematic biopsy, and those with a PI-RADS V2 score ≤ 2 only accepted systematic biopsy. Overall prostate cancer detection rate between the two biopsies was compared. MRI-TRUS cognitive fusion targeted biopsy identified 342 cases (75.7%) of prostate cancer while systematic biopsy identified 358 cases (79.2%). There was no significant difference in the detection rate between the two groups ( χ 2 = 1.621, P = 0.203). Targeted biopsy had significant fewer biopsy cores compared with systematic biopsy, reducing (9.3 ± 0.11) cores ( P < 0.001) in average. Targeted biopsy had about 10.8% ( P < 0.001) more tumor tissues in positive cores compared with systematic biopsy. The results show that both MRI-TRUS cognitive fusion targeted biopsy and systematic biopsy have good detection rate on prostate cancer. Cognitive targeted biopsy may reduce biopsy cores and provide more tumor tissues in positive cores.

Rivers are of increasing concern as sources of atmospheric methane (CH4), while estimates of global CH4 emissions from rivers are poorly constrained due to a lack of representative measurements in tropical and subtropical latitudes. Measurements of complete CH4 flux components from subtropical rivers draining agricultural watersheds are particularly important since these rivers are subject to large organic and nutrient loads. Two-year measurements of CH4 fluxes were taken to assess the magnitude of CH4 emissions from the Lixiahe River (a tributary of the Grand Canal) draining a subtropical rice paddy watershed in China. Over the two-year period, annual CH4 emissions averaged 29.52 mmol m-2 d-1, amounting to 10.78 mol m-2 yr-1, making the river a strong source of atmospheric CH4. The CH4 emissions from rivers during the rice-growing season (June-October) accounted for approximately 70% of the annual total, with flux rates at 1-2 orders of magnitude greater than those for rice paddies in this area. Ebullition contributed to 44-56% of the overall CH4 emissions from the rivers and dominated the emission pathways during the summer months. Our data highlight that rivers draining agricultural watersheds may constitute a larger component of anthropogenic CH4 emissions than is currently documented in China.

In order to evaluate effects of extraction techniques on the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of kiwifruit polysaccharides (KPS), and further explore KPS as functional food ingredients, both microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) were optimized for the extraction of KPS. Furthermore, the physicochemical structures and antioxidant activities of KPS extracted by different techniques were investigated. The optimal extraction conditions of UAE and MAE for the extraction of KPS were obtained by response surface methodology. Different extraction techniques significantly affected the contents of uronic acids, molecular weights, molar ratios of constituent monosaccharides, and the degree of esterification of KPS. Results showed that KPS exhibited remarkable DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, and reducing power. The high antioxidant activities observed in KPS extracted by the MAE method (KPS-M) might be partially attributed to its low molecular weight and high content of unmethylated galacturonic acid. Results suggested that the MAE method could be a good potential technique for the extraction of KPS with high antioxidant activity, and KPS could be further explored as functional food ingredients.

The net balance of greenhouse gas (GHG) exchanges between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere under elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) remains poorly understood. Here, we synthesise 1655 measurements from 169 published studies to assess GHGs budget of terrestrial ecosystems under elevated CO2 . We show that elevated CO2 significantly stimulates plant C pool (NPP) by 20%, soil CO2 fluxes by 24%, and methane (CH4 ) fluxes by 34% from rice paddies and by 12% from natural wetlands, while it slightly decreases CH4 uptake of upland soils by 3.8%. Elevated CO2 causes insignificant increases in soil nitrous oxide (N2 O) fluxes (4.6%), soil organic C (4.3%) and N (3.6%) pools. The elevated CO2 -induced increase in GHG emissions may decline with CO2 enrichment levels. An elevated CO2 -induced rise in soil CH4 and N2 O emissions (2.76 Pg CO2 -equivalent year-1 ) could negate soil C enrichment (2.42 Pg CO2 year-1 ) or reduce mitigation potential of terrestrial net ecosystem production by as much as 69% (NEP, 3.99 Pg CO2 year-1 ) under elevated CO2 . Our analysis highlights that the capacity of terrestrial ecosystems to act as a sink to slow climate warming under elevated CO2 might have been largely offset by its induced increases in soil GHGs source strength.

Soils are among the important sources of atmospheric nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2 O), acting as a critical role in atmospheric chemistry. Updated data derived from 114 peer-reviewed publications with 520 field measurements were synthesized using meta-analysis procedure to examine the N fertilizer-induced soil NO and the combined NO+N2 O emissions across global soils. Besides factors identified in earlier reviews, additional factors responsible for NO fluxes were fertilizer type, soil C/N ratio, crop residue incorporation, tillage, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, drought and biomass burning. When averaged across all measurements, soil NO-N fluxes were estimated to be 4.06 kg ha-1  yr-1 , with the greatest (9.75 kg ha-1  yr-1 ) in vegetable croplands and the lowest (0.11 kg ha-1  yr-1 ) in rice paddies. Soil NO emissions were more enhanced by synthetic N fertilizer (+38%), relative to organic (+20%) or mixed N (+18%) sources. Compared with synthetic N fertilizer alone, synthetic N fertilizer combined with nitrification inhibitors substantially reduced soil NO emissions by 81%. The global mean direct emission factors of N fertilizer for NO (EFNO ) and combined NO+N2 O (EFc ) were estimated to be 1.16% and 2.58%, with 95% confidence intervals of 0.71-1.61% and 1.81-3.35%, respectively. Forests had the greatest EFNO (2.39%). Within the croplands, the EFNO (1.71%) and EFc (4.13%) were the greatest in vegetable cropping fields. Among different chemical N fertilizer varieties, ammonium nitrate had the greatest EFNO (2.93%) and EFc (5.97%). Some options such as organic instead of synthetic N fertilizer, decreasing N fertilizer input rate, nitrification inhibitor and low irrigation frequency could be adopted to mitigate soil NO emissions. More field measurements over multiyears are highly needed to minimize the estimate uncertainties and mitigate soil NO emissions, particularly in forests and vegetable croplands.

We present a novel approach to recommending articles from the medical literature that support clinical diagnostic decision-making, giving detailed descriptions of the associated ideas and principles. The specific goal is to retrieve biomedical articles that help answer questions of a specified type about a particular case. Based on the filtered keywords, MeSH(Medical Subject Headings) lexicon and the automatically extracted acronyms, the relationship between keywords and articles was built. The paper gives a detailed description of the process of by which keywords were measured and relevant articles identified based on link analysis in a weighted keywords network. Some important challenges identified in this study include the extraction of diagnosis-related keywords and a collection of valid sentences based on the keyword co-occurrence analysis and existing descriptions of symptoms. All data were taken from medical articles provided in the TREC (Text Retrieval Conference) clinical decision support track 2015. Ten standard topics and one demonstration topic were tested. In each case, a maximum of five articles with the highest relevance were returned. The total user satisfaction of 3.98 was 33% higher than average. The results also suggested that the smaller the number of results, the higher the average satisfaction. However, a few shortcomings were also revealed since medical literature recommendation for clinical diagnostic decision support is so complex a topic that it cannot be fully addressed through the semantic information carried solely by keywords in existing descriptions of symptoms. Nevertheless, the fact that these articles are actually relevant will no doubt inspire future research.
