RESUMO

Textiles have been concomitant of human civilization for thousands of years. With the advances in chemistry and materials, integrating textiles with energy harvesters will provide a sustainable, environmentally friendly, pervasive, and wearable energy solution for distributed on-body electronics in the era of Internet of Things. This article comprehensively and thoughtfully reviews research activities regarding the utilization of smart textiles for harvesting energy from renewable energy sources on the human body and its surroundings. Specifically, we start with a brief introduction to contextualize the significance of smart textiles in light of the emerging energy crisis, environmental pollution, and public health. Next, we systematically review smart textiles according to their abilities to harvest biomechanical energy, body heat energy, biochemical energy, solar energy as well as hybrid forms of energy. Finally, we provide a critical analysis of smart textiles and insights into remaining challenges and future directions. With worldwide efforts, innovations in chemistry and materials elaborated in this review will push forward the frontiers of smart textiles, which will soon revolutionize our lives in the era of Internet of Things.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the transient segmental enhancement (TSE) of liver abscesses on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans. METHODS: In total, 42 abscesses in 38 patients were evaluated with real-time CEUS and contrast-enhanced CT imaging. The CT imaging and CEUS examinations were performed within one to 2 days of each other in all cases. The initial reports of the observations of TSE on CEUS scans were correlated later with the findings of TSE on contrast-enhanced CT images. Contrast-enhanced CT was used as the reference standard to evaluate the presence of TSE. Relationships between the 2 groups were analyzed using the χ test. P < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: In 16 patients, 16 typical TSE signs were shown by CEUS. Meanwhile, enhanced CT imaging showed 18 typical signs of TSE in 17 patients. We identified 38 patients with hepatic abscesses proven by needle aspiration (10 patients) or image-guided biopsy (28 patients). Ten patients had hepatobiliary cholelithiasis, 5 had diabetes mellitus type 2, and 2 had gastric cancer, whereas no evidence of underlying hepatobiliary or gastrointestinal diseases was found in the other 21 patients. Considering that enhanced CT is the reference standard for the diagnosis of hepatic abscesses, the sensitivity of CEUS in showing TSE was 89%, and the specificity was 100%. The χ test indicated that CEUS and enhanced CT were significantly correlated for detection of hepatic perfusion disorders (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The appearance of TSE in liver abscess was reliably detected by CEUS, which correlated well with the enhanced CT images (P < 0.05).

Hippeastrum chlorotic ringspot virus (HCRV) is a putative new member of the genus Tospovirus, which was first identified infecting Hymenocallis littoralis in Yunnan Province, southwestern China. Taeniothrips eucharii, the dominant thrips species found on H. littoralis, was tested for its efficiency as a vector of the virus. We used Western blot analysis of adult thrips to detect the N protein. Transmission experiments demonstrated an average acquisition efficiency of 43.7 ± 3.4% (AAP = 24 h) for the first larval stage and a transmission efficiency of 19.1 ± 2.4% (IAP = 24 h) for adult thrips. This study reports T. eucharii as a new genus and species of thrips transmitting a Tospovirus, HCRV.

The first complete genome sequence of calla lily chlorotic spot virus (CCSV) from Lijiang in northwestern Yunnan Province was obtained using RT-PCR with designed primers. The genome of CCSV isolate LJ-1-Yunnan is tripartite. The small (S) RNA is 3182 nucleotides (nt) in length and encodes a nonstructural protein (NSs, 1383 nt) and a nuclear nucleocapsid (N, 834 nt), separated by an 836-nt intergenic region (IGR). The medium (M) RNA is 4749 nt in length and encodes a nonstructural movement protein (NSm, 930 nt) and a glycoprotein (GnGc, 3,372 nt), also separated by a 349-nt IGR. The large (L) RNA is 8912 nt in length and encodes a predicted RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp, 8652 nt). The nucleotide sequences of the three viral RNA segments are 92-94 % identical to the published CCSV genome sequence, and the amino acid sequences of the encoded proteins are 96-98 % identical. However, the IGRs of the S and M RNAs are less similar, with 86 and 72 % identity, respectively. Genome sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analysis indicate that the Lijiang CCSV isolate is a unique tospovirus isolate that differs from CCSV isolates in other geographic regions.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the integrated performance of age, serum PSA, and transrectal ultrasound images in the prediction of prostate cancer using a Tree-Augmented NaÏve (TAN) Bayesian network model. METHODS: We collected such data as age, serum PSA, transrectal ultrasound findings, and pathological diagnoses from 941 male patients who underwent prostate biopsy from January 2008 to September 2011. Using a TAN Bayesian network model, we analyzed the data for predicting prostate cancer, and compared them with the gold standards of pathological diagnosis. RESULTS: The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive prediction rate, and negative prediction rate of the TAN Bayesian network model were 85.11%, 88.37%, 83.67%, 70.37%, and 94.25%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Based on age, serum PSA, and transrectal ultrasound images, the TAN Bayesian network model has a high value for the prediction of prostate cancer, and can help improve the clinical screening and diagnosis of the disease.

RESUMO

Hippeastrum chlorotic ringspot virus (HCRV) is a novel tospovirus that was identified in Yunnan Province, China, in 2013. We have sequenced the HCRV L gene, which is 8909 nt long and encodes the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (2873 amino acids, 330.8 kDa). The HCRV L protein shared highest similarity (89.4 %) with that of tomato yellow ring virus. The L protein contains a negative-sense RNA virus RNA-directed RNA polymerase motif and an endonuclease domain at the N-terminus. Combined with our previous reports of the S and M RNAs, the genome sequence of HCRV is now completed.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of Gushenyutai plaster administered at the Guanyuan (CV 4) acupoint on male infertility associated with semen non-liquefaction. METHODS: Sixty-two male patients with infertility caused by semen non-liquefaction were randomized into a treatment and control group. The control group received comprehensive therapy, which included oral administration of clarithromycin sustained release tablets, hip bath with Zhongyaoxiaoyan granules, prostate massage, and transurethral microwave treatment. The treatment group was administered Gushenyutai plaster in addition to the comprehensive therapy. Both groups were treated for 8 weeks. After treatment, the clinical effect and pregnancy rate were assessed and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The effective rate of the treatment group was significantly higher than that of the control group (96.77% vs 70.97%, P < 0.05) and the pregnancy rates of the treatment group and control groups were 38.71% and 16.13%, respectively (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The effect of Gushenyutai plaster plus comprehensive therapy was better than that of the comprehensive therapy alone on male infertility induced by semen non-liquefaction.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic value of color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) and contrast enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) for splenic vein complications (SVCs). METHODS: 144 inpatients (86 male, 58 female) with acute pancreatitis from Jan 2012 to Apr 2013 were recruited for this study. The participants had a mean age of (44.3 +/- 11.9) years. All participants were examined using CDFI, CEUS and contrast enhanced computer tomography (CECT) (less than 72 h interval between examinations). The CECT results were regarded as a golden standard, which were compared with the results of CDFI and CEU. The Medcalc 12.7.1.0 was used for drawing ROC curves and calculating AUC. RESULTS: The CECT confirmed 17 cases of SVCs; whereas, the CEUS identified 12 cases and the CDFI identified 4 cases of SVCs. The difference between the results of CDFI and CEUS was significant (Z = 2.233, P < 0.05). Higher levels of sensitivity (58.82%), specificity (98.43%), accuracy (93.75%), positive likelihood ratio (37.46), and negative likelihood ratio (0. 42) were found using CEUS for diagnosing SVCs, compared with those of using CDFI (sensitivity = 17.65%, specificity = 99.21%, accuracy = 89.58%, positive likelihood ratio = 22.34,negative likelihood ratio = 0.83). The area of AUC were 0.618 and 0.853 for CDFI and CEUS, respectively. CONCLUSION: CEUS is a better imaging method for diagnosing SVCs in patients with acute pancreatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility and clinical efficacy of ultrasound-guided facet joint injection and nerve block in lumbar facet joint for the treatment of facet-joint related low back pain. METHODS: 20 patients with facet-joint pain were randomized into two groups received block blindly (B group) or guided by ultrasound (US group) respectively. The location of needle tip was confirmed by CT in both groups, and the accuracy was computed afterwards. VAS score, puncture time and one-time puncture success rate (%) were recorded. VAS scores and pain remission rates in both groups were recorded at 30 min, 1 d, 2 d, 6 weeks after the block. RESULTS: The VAS scores were 3.3 +/- 0.4 in US group and 1.2 +/- 0.3 in B group (P < 0.05). The puncture time was (206 +/- 27) s in US group while (397 +/- 31) s in B group (P < 0.05). There were 37 facet joint blocks guided by ultrasound, in which 32 were correctly targeted with the first puncture. The success rate is 86.5%. There were 35 facet joint blocks blindly, in which 11 were correctly targeted with the first puncture. The success rate is 31.4%. The difference of one-time puncture success rate between the two groups was significant (P < 0.05). Differences of VAS and pain remission rate at half an hour after facet joint injection between B group and US group were significant (P < 0.05). There were 8, 9, 9, and 9 patients in US group obtaining a reduction in VAS scores > or = 3 at 30 min, 1 d, 2 d and 6 weeks after the procedure respectively, while the numbers of such patients were 5, 6, 5, 5 in B group (P > 0.05). After 6 weeks of follow-up, the overall remission rates were (72.3 +/- 14.0)% in US group, and (56.7 +/- 11.0)% in B group, there was no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The ultrasound-guided lumbar facet joint injection technique had a high feasibility and accuracy, and had better clinical efficacy than block blindly.

Background: We aimed to describe the difference between Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia group and non C. psittaci bacterial pneumonia group in community acquired pneumonia in this single-center clinical study. Methods: We collected the data of 35 patients with C. psittaci pneumonia cases and 46 patients with non C. psittaci bacterial pneumonia cases diagnosed with metagenomic next-generation sequencing assays from February 2019 to December 2021 in Huaihua First People's Hospital in China. Results: In the C. psittaci pneumonia group, 35 patients (100%) had a chance of exposure to poultry or birds, and their body temperature was greater than or equal to 39.0°C. The other common symptoms were a slow pulse (68.6%), cough (65.7%), expectoration (54.3%), chills (51.4%) and a shortness of breath (37.1%). Laboratory tests showed that >90% of the cases had markedly elevated infection indicators, and 97.1% of the cases had markedly declined calcium. The most common imaging finding was patchy shadows (94.3%), pleural effusion (68.6%), bilateral in 54.3% (n = 19) and unilateral in 45.7% (n = 16) participants, and 51.4% (n = 18) of cases met the criteria for severe pneumonia. In the non C. psittaci bacterial pneumonia group, 18 patients (39.1%) had a chance of exposure to poultry or birds, and 11 patients (23.9%) body temperature was greater than or equal to 39.0°C. Laboratory tests showed that >67% of cases had a mildly elevated infection indicators, and mildly declined serum albumin. Conclusion: The following characteristics are more likely to help distinguish C. psittaci pneumonia from non C. psittaci bacterial pneumonia. Including had a chance of exposure to poultry or birds, high fever, exhibit chills, expectoration, relatively slow pulse, and progress into severe pneumonia. Percentage of neutrophils, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, lactate dehydrogenase, and myoglobin levels are higher. Blood calcium and corrected calcium are lower. Chest CT showed pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, and mediastinal lymphadenopathy.

Prostatic malakoplakia (PMP) is a rare inflammatory disease, and misdiagnosis on imaging is a major reason for unnecessary punctures; however, information on imaging is even rarer. Five patients with PMP between May 2022 and February 2023 were enrolled in this study to summarize the imaging manifestations. All patients underwent ultrasound (US)-guided prostate biopsy and were confirmed by pathology, and the presence of prostate cancer was also excluded by pathology. The five patients, with a median age of 71 years (range = 58-74 years), had a median total prostate-specific antigen (T-PSA) of 10.40 ng/mL (range = 1.74-63.42 ng/mL). In two patients, chest computed tomography showed pulmonary infections. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Of these patients, four had a Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System (PIRADS) score of 5, while one had a score of 4. The lesions were mostly distributed in the peripheral zone of the prostate and appeared as a high signal on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI) and a low signal on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI). In the US examination, four patients had abnormal prostate morphology, with an unsmooth envelope and non-uniform parenchymal echogenicity. Four patients had increased prostate volume. US showed a hypoechoic nodule with non-uniform internal echogenicity, and an abundant internal blood flow signal was detected by color Doppler US. PSA, MRI, and US were not specific for PMP in our study, but we found that a history of co-infection may be helpful in an accurate diagnosis and to avoid unnecessary biopsy.

This work prepared and investigated the impact of carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles (MC-NPs) on the proliferative capability of keloid fibroblasts (KFBs) while analyzing the mechanistic roles of miR-214 and adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) in fibroblasts within hypertrophic scars. MC-NPs were synthesized through ion cross-linking, were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and laser particle size scattering. The influence of MC-NPs on the proliferation capacity of KFBs was assessed using the MTT method. Changes in the expression levels of miR-214 and A2AR in KFBs, normal skin fibroblasts (NFBs), hypertrophic scar tissue, and normal skin tissue were analyzed. KFBs were categorized into anti-miR-214, anti-miR-NC, miR-214 mimics, miR-NC, si-A2AR, si-con, anti-miR-214+ si-con, and anti-miR-214+ si-A2AR groups. Bioinformatics target prediction was conducted to explore the interaction between miR-214 and A2AR. Real-time quantitative PCR and immunoblotting (WB) were employed to detect the expression levels of miR-214, A2AR, apoptotic protein Bax, and TGF-ß in different cells. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) and flow cytometry were employed to assess cell proliferation activity and apoptosis. The results indicated that MC-NPs exhibited spherical particles with an average diameter of 236.47 ± 4.98 nm. The cell OD value in the MC-NPs group was lower than that in KFBs (P < 0.05). The mRNA levels of miR-214 in KFBs and hypertrophic scar tissue were lower than those in NFBs and normal tissue (P < 0.001), while the mRNA and protein levels of A2AR were significantly elevated (P < 0.05). Compared to the control group and anti-miR-NC, the anti-miR-214 group showed significantly increased cell OD values and Bcl-2 protein expression (P < 0.001), decreased levels of apoptotic gene Bax protein, TGF-ß gene mRNA, and protein expression (P < 0.001). Continuous complementary binding sites were identified between miR-214 and A2AR. Compared to the control group, the si-A2AR group exhibited a significant decrease in A2AR gene mRNA and protein expression levels (P < 0.001), reduced cell viability (P < 0.001), increased apoptosis rate (P < 0.001), and a significant elevation in TGF-ß protein expression (P < 0.001). miR-214 targetedly regulated the expression of A2AR, inducing changes in TGF-ß content, promoting the proliferation of keloid fibroblasts, and inhibiting cell apoptosis.

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is ranked among the top 10 most destructive viruses globally. It results in abnormal leaf growth, stunting, and even death, significantly affecting crop yield and quality. Phytohormones play a crucial role in regulating plant-virus interactions. However, there is still limited research on the effect of TSWV on phytohormone levels, particularly growth hormones and genes involved in the phytohormone pathway. In our study, we combined phytohormone metabolomics and transcriptomics to examine the impact of TSWV infection on phytohormone content and gene expression profile. Metabolomic results showed that 41 metabolites, including major phytohormones and their precursors and derivatives were significantly altered after 14 days of TSWV inoculation tobacco plants cvK326, with 31 being significantly increased and 10 significantly reduced. Specifically, the levels of abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile) were significantly reduced. The levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) have remained unchanged. However, the levels of cytokinin isopentenyladenine (iP) and salicylic acid (SA) significantly increased. The transcriptome analysis revealed 2,746 genes with significant changes in expression. Out of these, 1,072 genes were significantly downregulated, while 1,674 genes were significantly upregulated. Among them, genes involved in ABA synthesis and signaling pathways, such as 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED), protein phosphatase 2C (PP2C), serine/threonine-protein kinase (SnRK2), and abscisic acid responsive element binding factor (ABF), exhibited significant downregulation. Additionally, expression of the lipoxygenase gene LOX, Jasmonate ZIM domain-containing protein gene JAZ, and transcription factor gene MYC were significantly down-regulated. In the cytokinin pathway, while there were no significant changes in the expression of the cytokinin synthesis genes, a significant downregulation of transcriptionally active factor type-B response regulators (type-B RRs) was observed. In terms of SA synthesis and signaling pathways, the isochorismate synthase gene ICS1 and the pathogenesis-related gene PR1 were significantly upregulated. These results can strengthen the theoretical foundation for understanding the interaction between TSWV and tobacco and provide new insights for the future prevention and control of TSWV.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: This study investigated the value of transvaginal contrast-enhanced sonourethrography for the diagnosis of female urethral diverticulum (UD) by comparing results of contrast-enhanced ultrasound images and surgical findings. METHODS: A total of 14 female UD patients underwent preoperative transvaginal contrast-enhanced sonourethrography between July 2010 and June 2012. History and physical examination were initially assessed by the same urologist. Transvaginal contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging was performed and interpreted by the same ultrasonographer. Definite diagnosis was made by tracking the flow of the microbubbles into the cyst. Additionally, sagittal, cross-sectional, and dynamic images were obtained, and color Doppler ultrasound was applied in all cases. Data on the size, location, configuration, and opening of the UD was documented, and then compared with the surgical findings. RESULTS: The most common symptoms presenting in the UD patients included urinary incontinence (71.5 %), recurrent urinary tract infection (57.1 %), frequency (50 %), urgency (35.7 %), dysuria (35.7 %), and dyspareunia (21.4 %). On physical examination, 8 out of 14 patients (57.1 %) had a palpable anterior vaginal wall mass, while 6 out of 14 patients (42.9 %) had no palpable mass. Transvaginal contrast-enhanced sonourethrography revealed 17 diverticula orifices in total and correlated well with surgical findings regarding the size, location, configuration, and the opening of the UD. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with chronic irritative bladder symptoms, but with no response to conventional treatment a high index of suspicion for UD should be maintained. Our study demonstrates that transvaginal contrast-enhanced sonourethrography is a useful tool for defining the size, location, configuration, and opening of the UD before surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To study the ultrasound imaging characteristics of scrotum sarcoma. METHODS: Retrospective analyses of the ultrasound and clinical data of 9 patients with scrotum sarcoma were performed. RESULTS: Of the 9 patients, 5 had scrotum rhabdomyosarcoma, which included 2 cases of alveolus rhabdomyosarcoma and 3 cases of embryonic rhabdomyosarcoma (including 2 embryonic rhabdomyosarcoma of the tunica dartos in the scrotum). Their ultrasound imaging showed single or multiple hypoechoic mass located in the scrotum with distinct boundary and vascularity within the tumor. The other 4 patients had scrotum liposarcoma. The ultrasound imaging of 2 cases of scrotum liposarcoma displayed slightly hyperecho mass, while the other 2 cases displayed hyperecho and hypoechoic heterogeneous echo pattern. All of the mass had identifiable boundary and increased blood vessels. CONCLUSION: Scrotum sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of male genitalia. Scrotum ultrasound is useful for differentiating it from testicular tumor. The pathological feature of the tumor can be speculated according to the echo pattern and increased blood flow in the tumor.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility, accuracy of B ultrasound in the examination of joint space of lumbar spine facet joints compared with CT scan. METHODS: Ten healthy adult volunteers were enrolled. The joint space of lumbar facet joints was measured by ultrasound. To identify the spinal levels, the posterior parasagittal sonograms were obtained at levels L1 to S1. The lumbar facet joints were delineated with the help of transverse sonograms at each level. Meanwhile, the lumbar facet joints were evaluated by spiral CT on the same plane, reformatted to 1-mm axial slices. RESULTS: A total of 88 lumbar facet joints from L1 to S1 were clearly visualized in the 10 volunteers. Both ultrasound and CT measurements showed the same average depth and lateral distance of lumbar facet joint space (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The lumbar facet joint space can be accurately demonstrated by ultrasound.

Background: Acquired cystic disease-associated renal cell carcinoma (ACD-RCC) is a new subtype listed by the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) classification, which occurred in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. This study will present the imaging characteristics of the four cases diagnosed with ACD-RCC. Ultrasound is expected to help detect abnormalities early in the follow-up of patients on regular dialysis, allowing patients to receive early treatment. Case presentation: We searched the pathology database of our hospital for all inpatients diagnosed with ACD-RCC between January 2016 and May 2022. Pathology, ultrasound, and radiology readings are performed by experienced physicians with the title of attending physician or higher. Four cases were included in this study, all of whom were male, aged from 17 to 59. Two cases suffered from ACD-RCC in both kidneys, and kidney nephrectomies were performed. One case underwent renal transplantation, whose creatinine was back to normal, and the rest were on hemodialysis. On the pathological images, heteromorphic cells and oxalate crystals can be seen. Both ultrasound and enhanced CT showed an enhancement of the solid component of the occupancy. We followed up with outpatient and telephone visits. Conclusion: In clinical work, ACD-RCC should be considered when the mass appears in the background of multiple cysts in the kidney in patients with ESRD. A timely diagnosis will help with treatment and prognosis.

RESUMO

During the wide utilization of the actinides in medicine, energy, military, and other fields, internal contaminations can profoundly endanger human health and public security. Chelating decorporation agents are the most effective therapies to reduce internal contamination that includes radiological and chemical toxicities. This review introduces the structures of chelating decorporation agents including inorganic salts, polyaminocarboxylic acids, peptides, polyphosphonates, siderophores, calixarenes, polyethylenimines, and fullerenes, and highlights ongoing advances in their designs and mechanisms. However, there are still numerous challenges that block their applications including coordination properties, pharmacokinetic properties, oral bioavailability, limited timing of administration, and toxicity. Therefore, additional efforts are needed to push novel decorporation agents with high efficiency and low toxicity for the treatment of internal contamination by actinides.

Viruses deploy numerous strategies to infect plants, typically by forming complexes with another virus, leading to more efficient infection. However, the detailed plant responses to viral infection and the underlying mechanisms of co-infection remain unclear. Previously, we found that tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) and Hippeastrum chlorotic ringspot orthotospovirus (HCRV) could infect plants in the field by forming a complex. In this study, we found that TSWV infected tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana) plants in cooperation with HCRV, leading to a more efficient infection rate of both viruses. We then used the in-depth full-length transcriptome to analyze the responses of N. benthamiana to complex infection by TSWV-HCRV (TH). We found that infection with individual TSWV and HCRV triggered plant defense responses, including the jasmonic acid signaling pathway, autophagy, and secondary metabolism. However, TH co-infection could not trigger and even suppress some genes that are involved in these basal resistance responses, suggesting that co-infection is advantageous for the virus and not for the plants. Typically, the TH complex inhibits NbPR1 expression to suppress tobacco resistance. Moreover, the TH complex could alter the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs), especially novel-m0782-3p and miR1992-3p, which directly interact with NbSAM and NbWRKY6 and suppress their expression in tobacco, leading to downregulation of NbPR1 and loss of resistance in tobacco to TSWV and HCRV viruses. Overall, our results elucidated the co-infection mechanisms of TH in tobacco by deploying the miRNA of plants to suppress plant basal resistance and contributed to developing a novel strategy to control crop disease caused by this virus complex.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is an important zoonotic tropical disease in China that affects people living in western endemic areas. The disease is prone to occur in the liver with a characteristic similar to slow-growing malignant tumors. We report a 31-year-old male patient with serious complication after hepatorrhaphy, who had presented with clinical manifestations of hepatapostema with infection. Ultrasound (US) and computer tomography (CT) are two important medical imaging modalities to diagnose hepatic AE. Based on the medical history, clinical findings, laboratorial and imaging results, the patient was misdiagnosed with hepatapostema. A series of subsequent treatments were ineffective. Finally, partial hepatectomy was performed, and postoperative pathological results confirmed hepatic AE. The patient has now recovered.
