RESUMO

The most extreme environments are the most vulnerable to transformation under a rapidly changing climate. These ecosystems harbor some of the most specialized species, which will likely suffer the highest extinction rates. We document the steepest temperature increase (2010-2021) on record at altitudes of above 4,000 m, triggering a decline of the relictual and highly adapted moss Takakia lepidozioides. Its de-novo-sequenced genome with 27,467 protein-coding genes includes distinct adaptations to abiotic stresses and comprises the largest number of fast-evolving genes under positive selection. The uplift of the study site in the last 65 million years has resulted in life-threatening UV-B radiation and drastically reduced temperatures, and we detected several of the molecular adaptations of Takakia to these environmental changes. Surprisingly, specific morphological features likely occurred earlier than 165 mya in much warmer environments. Following nearly 400 million years of evolution and resilience, this species is now facing extinction.

The commercialization of Li-S batteries as a promising energy system is terribly impeded by the issues of the shuttle effect and Li dendrite. Keggin Al13 -pillared montmorillonite (AlMMT), used as the modified film of the separator together with super-P and poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), has a good chemical affinity to lithium polysulfide (LiPS) to retard the polysulfide shuttling, excellent electrolyte wettability, and a stable structure, which can improve the rate capability and cycling stability of Li-S batteries. Density function theory (DFT) calculations reveal the strong adsorption ability of AlMMT for LiPS. Consequently, the modified film allows Li-S batteries to reach 902 mAh g-1 at 0.2C after 200 cycles and 625 mAh g-1 at 1C after 1000 cycles. More importantly, a high reversible areal capacity of 4.04 mAh cm-2 can be realized under a high sulfur loading of 6.10 mg cm-2 . Combining the merits of rich resources of montmorillonite, prominent performance, simple operation and cost-effectiveness together, this work exploits a new route for viable Li-S batteries for applications.

N6 -methyladenosine (m6 A) is the most abundant mRNA modification in eukaryotes and is an important regulator of gene expression as well as many other critical biological processes. However, the characteristics and functions of m6 A in peanut (Arachis hypogea L.) resistance to bacterial wilt (BW) remain unknown. Here, we analyzed the dynamic of m6 A during infection of resistant (H108) and susceptible (H107) peanut accessions with Ralstonia solanacearum (R. solanacearum), the causative agent of BW. Throughout the transcriptome, we identified 'URUAY' as a highly conserved motif for m6 A in peanut. The majority of differential m6 A located within the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of the transcript, with fewer in the exons. Integrative analysis of RNA-Seq and m6 A methylomes suggests the correlation between m6 A and gene expression in peanut R. solanacearum infection, and functional analysis reveals that m6 A-associated genes were related to plant-pathogen interaction. Our experimental analysis suggests that AhALKBH15 is an m6 A demethylase in peanut, leading to decreased m6 A levels and upregulation of the resistance gene AhCQ2G6Y. The upregulation of AhCQ2G6Y expression appears to promote BW resistance in the H108 accession.

Pod size is a key agronomic trait that greatly determines peanut yield, the regulatory genes and molecular mechanisms that controlling peanut pod size are still unclear. Here, we used quantitative trait locus analysis to identify a peanut pod size regulator, POD SIZE/WEIGHT1 (PSW1), and characterized the associated gene and protein. PSW1 encoded leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase (LRR-RLK) and positively regulated pod stemness. Mechanistically, this allele harbouring a 12-bp insertion in the promoter and a point mutation in the coding region of PSW1 causing a serine-to-isoleucine (S618I) substitution substantially increased mRNA abundance and the binding affinity of PSW1 for BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1-ASSOCIATED RECEPTOR KINASE 1 (BAK1). Notably, PSW1HapII (super-large pod allele of PSW1) expression led to up-regulation of a positive regulator of pod stemness PLETHORA 1 (PLT1), thereby resulting in larger pod size. Moreover, overexpression of PSW1HapII increased seed/fruit size in multiple plant species. Our work thus discovers a conserved function of PSW1 that controls pod size and provides a valuable genetic resource for breeding high-yield crops.

Cerebral infarction (CI) remains a major cause of high mortality and long-term disability worldwide. The exploration of biomarkers and pathogenesis is crucial for the early diagnosis of CI. Although the understanding of metabolic perturbations underlying CI has increased in recent years, the relationship between altered metabolites and disease pathogenesis has only been partially elucidated and requires further investigation. In this study, we performed an integrated metabolomics and lipidomics analysis on 59 healthy subjects and 47 CI patients. Ultimately, 49 metabolite and 68 lipid biomarkers were identified and enriched in 24 disturbed pathways. The metabolic network revealed a significant interaction between altered lipids and other metabolites. Using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis, a panel of three polar metabolites and seven lipids was optimized in the training set, which included taurine, oleoylcarnitine, creatinine, PE(22:6/P-18:0), Cer 34:2, GlcCer(d18:0/18:0), DG 44:0, LysoPC(16:0), 22:6-OH/LysoPC, and TAG58:7-FA22:4. Subsequently, a support vector machine (SVM) model was constructed and validated, which showed excellent predictive ability in the validation set. Thereby, the integrated metabolomics and lipidomics approach could contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the metabolic dyshomeostasis associated with the pathogenesis of underlying CI. The present research may promote a deeper understanding and early diagnosis of CI in the clinic. All raw data were deposited in PRIDE (PXD036199).

BACKGROUND: Much research has focused on quantifying the bony characteristics of patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Far less attention, however, has been paid to muscle abnormalities around the hip such as those in the gluteus medius (GM). METHODS: We retrospectively examined clinical and imaging data, such as the age of onset and computed tomography (CT) findings, in 108 consecutive hips. Subjects for the control group were selected from our radiology database. Two readers independently evaluated the length (LGM), cross-sectional area (CSA), width (WGM), and thickness (TGM) of the GM and arm of GM (AGM) and angle of the GM activation (AOA) and bony parameters including the acetabulum-head index (AHI), lateral central edge angle (LCEA), acetabular index (AI), femoral offset (FO), and height of the rotation centre of femoral head (HCFH) among all cases using the imaging data. RESULTS: The patient group included 108 hips. The AGM, LGM, CSA, and TGM were lower in the DDH patients, while AOA was higher. However, there was no significant difference in the WGM between the two groups. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that AGM and AOA were independent factors affecting LCEA. The following regression equation was used: Y(LCEA) = 5.377 * X1 (AGM) - 0.310 * X2 (AOA) - 11.331. The mechanical characteristics of the GM and many bony parameters were significantly correlated (the AGM and AHI, LCEA, AI, FO, but not HCFH; AOA and AHI, LCEA, AI, but not FO or HCFH). The CSA was positively correlated with only HCFH. The rest were not statistical significance linear correlation. The multivariate regression results showed that the age of onset was positively correlated with AGM (r = 0.467). The regression equation used was Y = 9.0 * X (age of onset) - 11.4. CONCLUSION: We found difference in the morphological and mechanical characteristics of the GM between hips with DDH and hips of normal morphology. Of note, the mechanical characteristics of the GM were influenced by bony parameters in patients with DDH.

BACKGROUND: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have several known functions involving various biological regulatory processes in plant. However, the possible roles of lncRNAs during peanut seed development have not been fully explored. RESULTS: In this study, two peanut recombinant inbred lines (RIL8) that differ in seed size were used to investigate comprehensive lncRNA profiles derived from the seed development at 15 and 35 days after flowering (DAF). We identified a total of 9388 known and 4037 novel lncRNAs, from which 1437 were differentially expressed lncRNAs. Interestingly, the expression patterns of a number of lncRNAs can be very different between two closely related inbred lines and these lncRNAs were expressed predominantly in only one RIL at 35 DAF. Some differentially expressed lncRNAs were found related to putative cis-acting target genes and predicted to be involved in transcription, transport, cell division, and plant hormone biosynthesis. The expression patterns of several representative lncRNAs and 12 protein-coding genes were validated by qPCR. Same expression pattern was observed between most lncRNAs and their target genes. 11 lncRNAs, XR_001593099.1, MSTRG.18462.1, MSTRG.34915.1, MSTRG.41848.1, MSTRG.22884.1, MSTRG.12404.1, MSTRG.26719.1, MSTRG.35761.1, MSTRG.20033.1, MSTRG.13500.1, and MSTRG.9304.1 and their cis-acting target genes may play key roles in peanut seed development. CONCLUSIONS: These results provided new information on lncRNA-mediated regulatory roles in peanut seed development, contributing to the comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in peanut seed development.

BACKGROUND: Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a class of widely expressed endogenous regulatory RNAs, are involved in diverse physiological and developmental processes in eukaryotic cells. However, there have been no related studies on the number of circRNAs and their overall characteristics including circRNA abundance and expression profiles in peanut, which is one of the most important edible oil seed crops in the world. RESULTS: We performed a genome-wide identification of circular RNAs using ribosomal-depleted RNA-sequencing from the seeds of two peanut eighth-generation recombinant inbred lines (RIL8): 'RIL 8106' (a medium-pod variety) and 'RIL 8107' (a super-pod variety), at 15 and 35 days after flowering (DAF), respectively. A total of 347 circRNA candidates were detected by two computational pipelines: CIRCexplorer and CIRI, with at least two supporting junction reads. All these circRNAs were generated from exons of annotated genes, and widespread on the 20 peanut chromosomes. The expression profiles revealed that circRNAs were differentially expressed between two stages and between two lines. GO enrichment analysis of the host genes produced differentially-expressed circRNAs suggested that circRNAs are involved in seed development and regulation of seed size. Fifteen circRNAs were experimentally analyzed by qRT-PCR with divergent primers, and six circRNAs were resistant to digestion with RNase R exonuclease, and the back-splicing sites were further validated by Sanger DNA sequencing. CONCLUSIONS: We present the first systematical investigation of the genomic characteristics and expression profiles of circRNAs in peanut. The results revealed that circRNAs are abundant and widespread in peanut, and the differentially-expressed circRNAs between two lines suggested that they might play regulatory roles in peanut seeds development.

Growth-regulating factors (GRFs) are plant-specific transcription factors that perform important functions in plant growth and development. Herein, we identified and characterised 24 AhGRF genes in peanut (Arachis hypogaea). AhGRF family genes were divided into six classes with OLQ and WRC domains. Transcriptome expression profile showed that more AhGRF genes, such as AhGRF5a gene, were at higher expression during pod development in Arachis monticola than cultivated species, especially at the pod rapid-expansion stage. AhGRF5a and AhGRF5b genes expressed at higher levels in pods than roots, leaves and stems tissues, existing in the difference between Arachis monticola and H8107. Exogenous GA3 application can activate AhGRF5a and AhGRF5b genes and H8107 line showed more positive response than Arachis monticola species. These results imply that these two AhGRF genes may be active during the peanut pod development.

KEY MESSAGE: GmDW1 encodes an ent-kaurene synthase (KS) acting at the early step of the biosynthesis pathway for gibberellins (GAs) and regulates the development of plant height in soybean. Plant height is an important component of plant architecture, and significantly affects crop breeding practices and yield. Here, we report the characterization of an EMS-induced dwarf mutant (dw) of the soybean cultivar Zhongpin 661 (ZDD23893). The dw mutant displayed reduced plant height and shortened internodes, both of which were mainly attributed to the longitudinally decreased cell length. The bioactive GA1 (gibberellin A1) and GA4 (gibberellin A4) were not detectable in the stem of dw, and the dwarf phenotype could be rescued by treatment with exogenous GA3. Genetic analysis showed that the dwarf trait of dw was controlled by a recessive nuclear gene. By combining linkage analysis and mapping-by-sequencing, we mapped the GmDW1 gene to an approximately 460-kb region on chromosome (Chr.) 8, containing 36 annotated genes in the reference Willliams 82 genome. Of these genes, we identified two nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are present in the encoding regions of Gmdw1 and Glyma.08G165100 in dw, respectively. However, only the SNP mutation (T>A) at nucleotide 1224 in Gmdw1 cosegregated with the dwarf phenotype. GmDW1 encodes an ent-kaurene synthase, and was expressed in various tissues including root, stem, and leaf. Further phenotypic analysis of the allelic variations in soybean accessions strongly indicated that GmDW1 is responsible for the dwarf phenotype in dw. Our results provide important information for improving our understanding of the genetics of soybean plant height and crop breeding.

Hedyotis diffusa, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is widely used for oncotherapy and shows a positive effect in the clinical treatment. But its mechanism of anticancer activities is complicated and unclear. This study was undertaken to assess the therapeutic effects and reveal detailed mechanisms of H. diffusa for oncotherapy. A Walker 256 tumor-bearing rat model was established, and metabolomic profiles of plasma and urine were obtained from 1 H NMR technique. Multivariate statistical analysis methods were used to characterize the discriminating metabolites between control (C), Walker 256 tumor-bearing rats model (M), and H. diffusa treatment (H) groups. Finally, 13 and 10 metabolomic biomarkers in urine and plasma samples were further identified as characteristic metabolites in M group, whereas H group showed a partial metabolic balance recovered, such as ornithine, N-acetyl-l-aspartate, l-aspartate, and creatinine in urine samples, and acetate, lactate, choline, l-glutamine, and 3-hydroxybutyrate in plasma samples. On the basis of the methods above, we hypothesized H. diffusa treatment reduced the injury caused by Walker 256 tumor and maintained a metabolic balance. Our study demonstrated that this method provided new insights into metabolic alterations in tumor-bearing biosystems and researching on the effects of H. diffusa on the endogenous metabolism in tumor-bearing rats.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are ubiquitous in the environment, and some of them are recognized as endocrine disruptors that cause concerns on ecosystem functioning and public health. Due to the diversity of PAEs in the environment, there is a vital need to detect the total concentration of PAEs in a timely and low-cost way. To fulfill this requirement, it is highly desired to obtain group-specific PAE binders that are specific to the basic PAE skeleton. In this study, for the first time we have identified the group-specific PAE-binding aptamers via rationally designed target immobilization. The two target immobilization strategies were adopted to display either the phthalic ester group or the alkyl chain, respectively, at the surface of the immobilization matrix. The former enabled the rapid enrichment of aptamers after four rounds of selection. The top 100 sequences are cytosine-rich (44.7%) and differentiate from each other by only 1-4 nucleotides at limited locations. The top two aptamers all display the nanomolar dissociation constants to both the immobilized target and the free PAEs [dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)]. We further demonstrate the applications of the aptamers in the development of high-throughput PAE assays and DEHP electrochemical biosensors with exceptional sensitivity [limit of detection (LOD), 10 pM] and selectivity (>105-fold). PAE aptamers targeting one of the most sought for targets thus offer the promise of convenient, low-cost detection of total PAEs. Our study also provides insights on the aptamer selection and sensor development of highly hydrophobic small molecules.

Imaging-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) provides an attractive way to treat cancer. A composite material of a nanoscale metal-organic framework (NMOF) and graphene oxide (GO) has been prepared for potential use in tumor-guided PTT with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The NMOFs containing Fe3+ were prefabricated with an octahedral morphology through a solvothermal reaction to offer a strong T2 -weighted contrast in MRI. Then the NMOFs were decorated with GO nanosheets, which had good photothermal properties. After decoration, zeta-potential characterization shows that the aqueous stability of the composite material is enhanced, UV/Vis and near-infrared (NIR) spectra confirm that NIR absorption is also increased, and photothermal experiments reveal that the composite materials express higher photothermal conversion effects and conversion stability. The fabricated NMOF/GO shows low cytotoxicity, effective T2 -weighted contrast of MRI, and positive PTT behavior for a tumor model in vitro. The performance of the composite NMOF/GO for MRI and PTT was also tested upon injection into A549 tumor-bearing mice. The studies in vivo revealed that the fabricated NMOF/GO was efficient in T2 -weighted imaging and ablation of the A549 tumor with low cytotoxicity, which implied that the prepared composite contrast agent was a potential multifunctional nanotheranostic agent.

A dehydrogenative C(sp2)-N bond-forming strategy via copper-catalyzed intramolecular C-H/N-H coupling has been developed, which systematically unraveled the feasibility and practicality for benzoimdazo[1,2-a]indole formations through oxidative anilidic N-H activation. The merit of this strategy is illustrated by the broad tolerance of functionalities, as well as the utilization of extremely cheap copper catalysis to realize potentially useful indole-fused tetracycles in a step- and atom-economical manner.

Mutagenized populations have provided important materials for introducing variation and identifying gene function in plants. In this study, an ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-induced soybean (Glycine max) population, consisting of 21,600 independent M2 lines, was developed. Over 1,000 M4 (5) families, with diverse abnormal phenotypes for seed composition, seed shape, plant morphology and maturity that are stably expressed across different environments and generations were identified. Phenotypic analysis of the population led to the identification of a yellow pigmentation mutant, gyl, that displayed significantly decreased chlorophyll (Chl) content and abnormal chloroplast development. Sequence analysis showed that gyl is allelic to MinnGold, where a different single nucleotide polymorphism variation in the Mg-chelatase subunit gene (ChlI1a) results in golden yellow leaves. A cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence marker was developed and may be applied to marker-assisted selection for the golden yellow phenotype in soybean breeding. We show that the newly developed soybean EMS mutant population has potential for functional genomics research and genetic improvement in soybean.

Lang-du (LD) has been traditionally used to treat human diseases in China. Plasma metabolic profiling was applied in this study based on LC-MS to elucidate the toxicity in rats induced by injected ethanol extract of LD. LD injection was given by intraperitoneal injection at doses of 0.1, 0.05, 0.025 and 0 g kg(-1) body weight per day to rats. The blood biochemical levels of alanine aminotransferase, direct bilirubin, creatinine, serum ß2-microglobulin and low-density lipoprotein increased in LD-injected rats, and the levels of total protein and albumin decreased in these groups. The metabolic profiles of the samples were analyzed by multivariate statistics analysis, including principal component analysis, partial least squares discriminant analysis and orthogonal projection to latent structures discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA). The metabolic characters in rats injected with LD were perturbed in a dose-dependent manner. By OPLS-DA, 18 metabolites were served as the potential toxicity biomarkers. Moreover, LD treatment resulted in an increase in the p-cresol, p-cresol sulfate, lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LPE) (18:0), LPE (16:0), lysophosphatidylcholine (16:0) and 12-HETE concentrations, and a decrease in hippuric acid, cholic acid and N-acetyl-l-phenylalanine. These results suggested that chronic exposure to LD could cause a disturbance in lipids metabolism and amino acids metabolism, etc. Therefore, an analysis of the metabolic profiles can contribute to a better understanding of the adverse effects of LD. Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is often confused with other liver diseases because of their shared nonspecific symptoms and serological and histological overlap. This study compared the plasma metabolomic profiles of patients with AIH, primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), PBC/AIH overlap syndrome (OS), and drug-induced liver injury (DILI) with those of healthy subjects to identify potential biomarkers of AIH. Metabolomic profiling and biomarker screening were performed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) coupled with a partial least-squares discriminant analysis. Compared with the levels in healthy volunteers and other liver disease patients, AIH patients exhibited relatively high levels of plasma pyruvate, lactate, acetate, acetoacetate, and glucose. Such metabolites are typically related to energy metabolism alterations and may be a sign of metabolic conversion to the aerobic glycolysis phenotype of excessive immune activation. Increased aromatic amino acids and decreased branched-chain amino acids were found in the plasma of AIH patients. The whole NMR profiles were stepwise-reduced, and nine metabolomic biomarkers having the greatest significance in the discriminant analysis were obtained. The diagnostic utility of the selected metabolites was assessed, and these biomarkers achieved good sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy (all above 93%) in distinguishing AIH from PBC, DILI, and OS. This report is the first to present the metabolic phenotype of AIH and the potential utility of 1H NMR metabolomics in the diagnosis of AIH.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the relationship between lipid metabolism, coagulation function, and bone metabolism and the contributing factor and staging of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis, and to further investigate the factors influencing the blood indicators related to the staging of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis. METHODS: The medical records of patients with femoral head necrosis were retrieved from the inpatient medical record management system, and the lipid metabolism, bone metabolism, and coagulation indices of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis (including alcoholic, hormonal, and idiopathic group) were obtained according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, including Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein A1, Apolipoprotein (B), Apolipoprotein (E), Uric Acid, Alkaline Phosphatase, Bone-specific Alkaline Phosphatase, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, Prothrombin Time, D-dimer, Platelet count. The relationship between these blood indices and the different stages under different causative factors was compared, and the factors influencing the stages of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: (i) Gender, Age and BMI stratification, Low-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Non-High-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein (B), Apolipoprotein (E), Uric Acid, Bone-specific Alkaline Phosphatase, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, Plasminogen Time, D-dimer, and Platelet count of the alcohol group were statistically different when compared among the different ARCO staging groups; (ii) The differences in Age and BMI stratification, Triglycerides, Non-High-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein A1, Apolipoprotein B, Apolipoprotein E, Uric Acid, Bone-specific Alkaline Phosphatase, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, Plasminogen Time, D-dimer, and Platelet count were statistically significant when compared among the different phases in the hormone group (P < 0.05); (iii) The differences in Age and BMI stratification, Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein A1, Apolipoprotein (B), Apolipoprotein (E), Uric Acid, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, D-dimer, and Platelet count were statistically significant when compared among the different stages in the idiopathic group (P < 0.05); (v) Statistically significant indicators were included in the multivariate logistic regression analysis, excluding the highly correlated bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, and the results showed that Low-density lipoprotein was negatively correlated with changes in the course of ARCO, and Non-High-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol, Apo B, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, and Platelet count were significantly and positively correlated with disease progression. CONCLUSION: An abnormal hypercoagulable state as well as an abnormal hyperlipidemic state are risk factors for the progression of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis under various exposure factors, as indicated by Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein B, Activated Fractional Thromboplastin Time, and Platelet Counts.

Some fungal accessory chromosomes (ACs) may contribute to virulence in plants. However, the mechanisms by which ACs determine specific traits associated with lifestyle transitions along a symbiotic continuum are not clear. Here we delineated the genetic divergence in two sympatric but considerably variable isolates (16B and 16W) of the poplar-associated fungus Stagonosporopsis rhizophilae. We identified a âˆ¼0.6-Mb horizontally acquired AC in 16W that resulted in a mildly parasitic lifestyle in plants. Complete deletion of the AC (Δ16W) significantly altered the fungal phenotype. Specifically, Δ16W was morphologically more similar to 16B, showed enhanced melanization, and established beneficial interactions with poplar plants, thereby acting as a dark septate endophyte. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis showed that AC loss induced the upregulation of genes related to root colonization and biosynthesis of indole acetic acid and melanin. We observed that the AC maintained a more open status of chromatin across the genome, indicating an impressive remodeling of cis-regulatory elements upon AC loss, which potentially enhanced symbiotic effectiveness. We demonstrated that the symbiotic capacities were non-host-specific through comparable experiments on Triticum- and Arabidopsis-fungus associations. Furthermore, the three isolates generated symbiotic interactions with a nonvascular liverwort. In summary, our study suggests that the AC is a suppressor of symbiosis and provides insights into the underlying mechanisms of mutualism with vascular plants in the absence of traits encoded by the AC. We speculate that AC-situated effectors and other potential secreted molecules may have evolved to specifically target vascular plants and promote mild virulence.
