BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether Ureaplasma-associated pneumonia and azithromycin treatment affect the risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants who tested positive for Ureaplasma within 72 h after birth in a tertiary unit. Chest X-ray (CXR) and laboratory test were performed before and after azithromycin treatment. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the independent association between BPD and Ureaplasma-associated pneumonia, as well as BPD and effective azithromycin treatment. RESULTS: A total of 118 infants were included in the current study, of whom 36 developed BPD (defined as supplemental oxygen needed at postmenstrual age 36 weeks or discharge). The rate of BPD was significantly higher in infants with Ureaplasma-associated pneumonia (44.6%) compared to infants with Ureaplasma colonization (17.7%, P = 0.002). After adjusting for confounders, an effective azithromycin treatment was significantly associated with reduced risk of BPD [odd ratio (OR) 0.011; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.000-0.250), whereas Ureaplasma-associated pneumonia was not significantly associated with BPD (OR 1.835; 95% CI: 0.548-6.147). CONCLUSION: Effective Azithromycin treatment in Ureaplasma positive VLBW infants was associated with a reduced risk of BPD.

OBJECTIVES: To identify a cutoff value of iliac vein stenosis in computed tomography venography (CTV) for assisting in the diagnosis of iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS). Meanwhile, determining whether the inclusion of venous return and collateral imaging findings could further enhance the diagnostic performance. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on 264 patients suspected of IVCS who underwent both CTV and digital subtraction venography (DSV) from January 2016 to December 2020; they were assigned to either a control group (n = 101) or an IVCS group (n = 163) based on the DSV results. The narrowest anteroposterior diameter of the common iliac vein and the anteroposterior diameter of the distal end were measured to calculate the percentage of iliac vein stenosis. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to determine the predictive accuracy of the percentage of iliac vein stenosis for IVCS and whether the inclusion of venous reflux indicators can further improve the diagnostic accuracy. RESULTS: With respect to the DSV results, the area under the curve was 0.797 ( P < 0.001). The best cutoff value was 46.67%, corresponding to a sensitivity of 83.44% and a specificity of 69.31% for predicting IVCS. Moreover, the combination diagnostic method had higher sensitivity and accuracy (94.48% vs 83.44% [ P = 0.01] and 84.85% vs 78.03% [ P = 0.04], respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The best cutoff percentage of iliac vein stenosis to diagnose IVCS was 46.67% with CTV. The sensitivity and accuracy of the combined diagnostic method were higher than those of the iliac vein stenosis ratio diagnostic method.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a one of the main causes of perinatal disease, yet the method for GBS detection, broth-enriched culture, is time-consuming and has low sensitivity and accuracy. We aimed to develop a GBS digital PCR (GBS-dPCR) assay for detecting GBS colonization. More rapid and accurate detection of GBS colonization could increase GBS diagnosis and treatment closer to delivery. A single-center, retrospective, case-controlled study was performed. A total of 182 rectovaginal swabs from pregnant women, who were undergoing prenatal screening by broth-enriched culture, were evaluated using GBS-dPCR targeting the cfb gene of GBS. Pregnant women with GBS colonization were followed up for correlation analysis between GBS DNA copy numbers and perinatal outcomes. The results of the GBS-dPCR assay were compared to those from the broth-enriched culture, which is the gold standard for GBS detection. The sensitivity and specificity of GBS-dPCR were 98% and 92.5%, respectively. By discrepant result analysis, the specificity of GBS-dPCR was raised to 97.4%. The incidence of premature rupture of membrane (PROM) and neonatal infection were statistically significantly positively correlated with GBS DNA copy numbers. GBS-dPCR has the advantage of directly detecting GBS colonization from swabs with high specificity and sensitivity, while reducing turnaround time (<4 h). Analysis of clinical samples with GBS-dPCR shows that GBS DNA copy numbers are positively correlated with the incidence of PROM and neonatal infection, suggesting that dPCR is a promising method for detection of GBS colonization during pregnancy.

Constants for a Terrestrial Biotic Ligand Model (TBLM) to predict the Cu toxicity to barley root elongation (RE) were developed from controlled sand culture experiments. These constants were used to predict RE in soil culture. The competition of H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ to Cu2+ toxicity were studied individually and independently, and linear relationships between EC50 free Cu2+ and H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ activities were found, meaning that the cations H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ will alleviate the toxicity of Cu2+ in solutions. Toxicity accompanying increasing concentration of solution ions other than Cu2+ was observed and modeled as an osmotic effect which improved soil culture toxicity prediction. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of %RE and EC50 (50% effective concentration) for soil toxicity prediction using TBLM parameters developed from sand culture are 13.0 and 0.23 respectively, which are as good as that of 14.0 and 0.24 using parameters that developed from soil culture itself. A model including the activity at the root plasma membrane surface was tested and found not to provide improvement over the use of bulk solution activity to predict metal toxicity. TBLM parameters obtained from water solution culture were unable to accurately predict the EC50s in soils whereas the parameters obtained from sand culture were able to predict the toxicity in soils. Including the toxicity of CuOH+ was found to improve the toxicity prediction slightly.

RESUMO

This review paper examines the evolution of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a novel, minimally invasive strategy for treating atherosclerosis, a leading global health concern. Atherosclerosis is characterized by the accumulation of lipids and inflammation within arterial walls, leading to significant morbidity and mortality through cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke. Traditional therapeutic approaches have primarily focused on modulating risk factors such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia, with emerging evidence highlighting the pivotal role of inflammation. PDT, leveraging a photosensitizer, specific-wavelength light, and oxygen, offers targeted treatment by inducing cell death in diseased tissues while sparing healthy ones. This specificity, combined with advancements in nanoparticle technology for improved delivery, positions PDT as a promising alternative to traditional interventions. The review explores the mechanistic basis of PDT, its efficacy in preclinical studies, and the potential for enhancing plaque stability and reducing macrophage density within plaques. It also addresses the need for further research to optimize treatment parameters, mitigate adverse effects, and validate long-term outcomes. By detailing past developments, current progress, and future directions, this paper aims to highlight PDT's potential in revolutionizing atherosclerosis treatment, bridging the gap from experimental research to clinical application.

Facing the current situation of tourism and urban prosperity and development, whether there is a contradiction between urban tourism and urban development, and whether they can always coordinate with each other will affect the sustainable development of both. In this context, the coordination of urban tourism and urban development has become an urgent research object. Based on the statistics of twenty indicators of urban tourism and urban development in Xiamen from 2014 to 2018, the article uses the TOPSIS analysis method to develop the number of tourists. Research results show that (1) the selected indicators all showed significant growth characteristics, and over time the coordination coefficient increases year by year and gradually approaches the ideal optimal value. (2) Among them, 2018 has the highest coordination coefficient, 0.9534. (3) The occurrence of "big events" has a double-sided effect on urban tourism and development coordination.

BACKGROUND: This prospective study aimed to investigate whether lung ultrasound score (LUSs) can predict the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation. METHODS: Preterm infants ≤25 weeks of gestational age (GA) were enrolled. A lung ultrasound was performed on the 14th day of life. Each lung zone was given a score between 0 and 4. A receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed to evaluate the ability of the LUSs for predicting ligation. RESULTS: A total of 81 infants were eligible with a median GA and birth weight (BW) of 25 weeks (24.1-25.2) and 710 g (645-770), respectively. The median time from birth to ligation was 35 days (32-51). Those who underwent ligation had a longer time of mechanical ventilation (34 [26-39] vs. 19 [12-30], p < 0.001), shorter time of noninvasive respiratory support (39 [32-51] vs. 50 [41.5-57], p < 0.01), higher incidence of the bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) (p < 0.01), and severe BPD (p < 0.001). The LUSs had an area under the ROC of 0.96 (95% confidence interval: 0.93-0.99) for the prediction of ligation. A LUSs cutoff of 36 has a sensitivity and specificity of 96% and 86% and positive and negative predictive values of 82% and 98%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: LUSs at an early stage of life can predict PDA ligation in extremely preterm infants. It would be helpful to reduce morbidity by reducing the duration and magnitude of respiratory support.

OBJECTIVE: To clone the xylitol dehydrogenase gene from Gluconobacter oxydans CGMCC 1.637, to characterize enigmatic properties of xylitol dehydrogenase and to investigate the induction abilities of various carbon sources on the oxidative activity of xylitol dehydrogenase and the effect of various carbon sources on the bioconversion of d-xylulose to xylitol in G. oxydans CGMCC 1.637. METHODS: Touch-down polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied to clone the xylitol dehydrogenase gene from chromosomal DNA of G. oxydans CGMCC 1.637. RESULTS: The 798-bp open reading frame of xylitol dehydrogenase encoded a protein of 265 amino acids, with the molecular mass of 27.95 kDa. Sequence analysis of the putative protein revealed it to be a member of short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase family. Xylitol dehydrogenase showed oxidative activity with xylitol and sorbitol and no activity with other polyols, such as d-arabitol. K(m) and V(max) with xylitol was 78.97 mmol/L and 40.17 U/mg, respectively. The highest oxidative activity of xylitol dehydrogenase for xylitol was only 23.27 U/mg under optimum conditions (pH 10.0, 35 degrees C). However, the activity of its reverse reaction, d-xylulose reduction, reached 255.55 U/mg under optimum conditions (pH 6.0, 30 degrees C), 10-times higher than that of xylitol oxidation. Oxidative activity of xylitol dehydrogenase was induced when G. oxydans CGMCC 1.637 was cultivated on d-sorbitol. D-arabitol, which supported a high cell growth, inhibited the oxidative activity of xylitol dehydrogenase and the bioconversion ability of G. oxydans CGMCC 1.637. CONCLUSIONS: The obtained gene from G. oxydans CGMCC 1.637 was a novel gene encoding xylitol dehydrogenase. Oxidative activity of xylitol dehydrogenase in G. oxydans CGMCC 1.637 and the bioconversion ability of G. oxydans CGMCC 1.637 after grown on d-arabitol were inhibited, which provided a valuable clue for further study to increase xylitol yield from d-arabitol.

Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for a great number of all lung cancer cases. Hypoxia, one of the hallmarks in solid cancer, is closely involved in cancer cell progression and migration. This study aimed to develop a molecular subtyping system based on hypoxia-related genes and construct a prognostic model for NSCLC patients. Methods: Unsupervised consensus clustering was used to classify molecular subtypes. Mutation and immune analyses were conducted to compare differences among the molecular subtypes. Univariate Cox regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) analysis, and step Akaike information criterion (stepAIC) were performed to screen prognostic genes. Results: Two molecular subtypes (C1 and C2) were identified based on hypoxia-related genes and showed significant differences in survival, enriched pathways, tumor microenvironment (TME), and sensitivity to immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Interestingly, C1 subtype had better survival and response to targeted therapies. Oncogenic pathways, such as hypoxia, epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), NOTCH signaling, and p53 signaling pathways were more enriched in C2 subtype. A 6-gene prognostic model with robust ability was developed to classify NSCLC patients into high-risk and low-risk groups. Conclusion: The novel molecular subtypes could assist personalized therapies to select suitable patients. The six prognostic genes may be novel targets for further understanding mechanisms of NSCLC development associated with hypoxia and exploiting novel targeted therapies.

Point-of-care lung ultrasound (LUS) is increasingly applied in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Diagnostic applications for LUS in the NICU contain the diagnosis of many common neonatal pulmonary diseases (such as Respiratory distress syndrome, Transient tachypnea of the newborn, Meconium aspiration syndrome, Pneumonia, Pneumothorax, and Pleural effusion) which have been validated. In addition to being employed as a diagnostic tool in the classical sense of the term, recent studies have shown that the number and type of artifacts are associated with lung aeration. Based on this theory, over the last few years, LUS has also been used as a semi-quantitative method or as a "functional" tool. Scores have been proposed to monitor the progress of neonatal lung diseases and to decide whether or not to perform a specific treatment. The semi-quantitative LUS scores (LUSs) have been developed to predict the demand for surfactant therapy, the need of respiratory support and the progress of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Given their ease of use, accuracy and lack of invasiveness, the use of LUSs is increasing in clinical practice. Therefore, this manuscript will review the application of LUSs in neonatal lung diseases.

Background: The notch signal pathway is important in the development of both tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and stomach cancer, but how Notch signaling affects TAMs in stomach cancer is barely understood. Methods: The expressions of Notch1, Notch2, Notch3, Notch4, hes family bHLH transcription factor 1 (Hes1), and delta-like canonical Notch ligand 3 (DLL3) were detected by Western blot and the expressions of interleukin (IL)-10, IL-12, and IL1-ß were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay after the co-culture of macrophages and stomach-cancer cells. The proliferation and migration of cancer cells were detected using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and scratch assay, respectively, and the cell cycle was detected using Annexin V/propidium iodide assay. The protein interactions with DLL3 were detected using co-immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry. Results: The co-culture of macrophages and stomach-cancer cells MKN45 and BGC823 could enhance cell proliferation accompanied by the activation of Notch1/Notch2 signaling and upregulation of DLL3. Notch signaling gamma-secretase inhibitor (DAPT) blocked this process. The overexpression of DLL3 in stomach-cancer cells could promote the proliferation of cancer cells, enhance the activation of Notch1/Notch2 signaling, induce the expression of IL-33, lead to the degradation of galectin-3-binding protein (LG3BP) and heat shock cognate 71 kDa protein (HSPA8), and result in elevated IL-1ß, IL-12, and IL-10 secretion by macrophages. Higher expression of DLL3 or IL-33 could lead to a lower survival rate based on University of California, Santa Cruz Xena Functional Genomics Explorer and The Cancer Genome Atlas data set. Conclusions: This is evidence that DLL3 regulates macrophages in stomach cancer, suggesting that DLL3 may be a novel and potential target for stomach-cancer therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To isolate a new osmophilic yeast for producing D-arabitol and research its optimal fermentation conditions for highest yield of D-arabitol from glucose. METHODS: The isolated strain was characterized by electron microscopy, Biolog (GN) test, G + C content measurement and 26S rDNA D1/D2 domain sequences analysis. The purified fermentation product was identified by IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, MS and optical rotation analysis. Then the fermentation conditions for D-arabitol production were optimized. RESULTS: A new osmophilic yeast was isolated and identified as Candida sp. H2. Through the single factor experiment,the optimum conditions of 250 g/L glucose,10 g/L yeast extract, initial pH 6.0, 35 degrees C of culture temperature, 200 r/min of agitation, 200 mL medium in a 1000 mL flask of broth content, 1% (v/v) of inoculum size, 96 h of fermentation time were achieved. Based on the conditions above,weight yield of 35% (86.55 g D-arabitol from 250 g glucose) was obtained and 10% higher than the conditions not optimized. CONCLUSIONS: Candida sp. H2 was a novel strain for producing D-arabitol and valuable for further study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of ibuprofen exposure with the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in extremely premature infants. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study of all extremely premature infants admitted to a tertiary unit from 2016 to 2018. RESULTS: A total of 203 extremely premature infants were included in this study. The rate of BPD was significantly higher in infants with early exposure to ibuprofen (42.5%) compared to infants with no exposure (21.6%, P = 0.001). After adjusting for covariates, the risk of BPD was associated independently with ibuprofen exposure (odds ratios (OR) 2.296, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.166-4.522, p = 0.016). Further analysis showed a trend towards higher risk of BPD in infants with successful patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure after ibuprofen treatment (32.3%) compared to non-treated infants (20.2%, p = 0.162). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that ibuprofen exposure may contribute to the occurrence of BPD in extremely preterm infants.

Helicobacter pylori infection induces CD4+ T differentiation cells into IFN-γ-producing Th1 cells. However, the details of mechanism underlying this process remain unclear. Notch signal pathway has been reported to regulate the differentiation of CD4+ T cells into Th1 subtype in many Th1-mediated inflammatory disorders but not yet in H. pylori infection. In the present study, the mRNA expression pattern of CD4+ T cells in H. pylori-infected patients differed from that of healthy control using Human Signal Transduction Pathway Finder RT2 Profiler PCR Array, and this alteration was associated with Notch signal pathway, as analyzed by Bioinformation. Quantitative real-time PCR showed that the mRNA expression of Notch1 and its target gene Hes-1 in CD4+ T cells of H. pylori-infected individuals increased compared with the healthy controls. In addition, the mRNA expression of Th1 master transcription factor T-bet and Th1 signature cytokine IFN-γ was both upregulated in H. pylori-infected individuals and positively correlated with Notch1 expression. The increased protein level of Notch1 and IFN-γ were also observed in H. pylori-infected individuals confirmed by flow cytometry and ELISA. In vitro, inhibition of Notch signaling decreased the mRNA expression of Notch1, Hes-1, T-bet, and IFN-γ, and reduced the protein levels of Notch1 and IFN-γ and the secretion of IFN-γ in CD4+ T cells stimulated by H. pylori. Collectively, this is the first evidence that Notch1 is upregulated and involved in the differentiation of Th1 cells during H. pylori infection, which will facilitate exploiting Notch1 as a therapeutic target for the control of H. pylori infection.

OBJECTIVE: To construct a eukaryotic expression plasmid carrying human full-length Notch ligand Delta-like 3 (DLL3) gene and study the effect of DLL3 knockdown and overexpression on the proliferation of gastric cancer cells in vitro. METHODS: Human full-length DLL3 gene was amplified by PCR and cloned into the eukaryotic expression vector pCMV-Tag4. After verification by restriction enzymes and sequencing, the recombinant DLL3/pCMV-Tag4 vector was transiently transfected into HEK293T cells, in which the expressions of human DLL3 mRNA and protein were detected using real-time quantitative PCR and Western blotting, respectively. The expression of DLL3 in normal gastric epithelial cells and gastric cancer cell lines was detected by qRT-PCR and Western blotting. DLL3/pCMV-Tag4 was transfected into 3 gastric cancer cell lines, and their proliferation was assessed with MTT assay. Human gastric cancer cells MGC803 and MKN45 were also transfected with a specific human DLL3-siRNA to assess the effect of DLL3 down-expression on the cell proliferation. RESULTS: The recombinant eukaryotic expression vector DLL3/pCMV-Tag4 was successfully constructed and human full-length DLL3 was expressed in HEK293T cells. MTT assay showed that DLL3 over-expression obviously promoted the proliferation and down-regulation of DLL3 inhibited the proliferation of the gastric cancer cells. CONCLUSIONS: DLL3 overexpression can promote the proliferation of gastric cancer cells in vitro, and down-regulation of DLL3 inhibits the proliferation of gastrc cancer cells, which provides a novel strategy for targeted thrapy of gastric cancer.

Antigen-specific CD4+ T cells play an essential role in effective immunity against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. Lpp20, a conserved lipoprotein of H. pylori, has been investigated as one of major protective antigens for vaccination strategies. Our previous study identified two H-2d-restricted CD4+ T cell epitopes within Lpp20 and an epitope vaccine based on these epitopes was constructed, which protected mice in prophylactic and therapeutic vaccination against H. pylori infection. Immunodominant CD4+ T cell response is an important feature of antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumor cellular immunity. However, while many immunodominant HLA-restricted CD4+ T cell epitopes of H. pylori protective antigens have been identified, immunodominant HLA-restricted Lpp20 CD4+ T cell epitope has not been elucidated. In this study, a systematic method was used to comprehensively evaluate the immunodominant Lpp20-specific CD4+ T cell response in H. pylori-infected patients. Using in vitro recombinant Lpp20 (rLpp20)-specific expanded T cell lines from H. pylori-infected subjects and 27 18mer overlapping synthetic peptides spanned the whole Lpp20 protein, we have shown that L55-72 and L79-96 harbored dominant epitopes for CD4+ T cell responses. Then the core sequence within these two 18mer dominant epitopes was screened by various extended or truncated 13mer peptides. The immunodominant epitope was mapped to L57-69 and L83-95. Various Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) transformed B lymphoblastoid cell lines (B-LCLs) with different HLA alleles were used as antigen presenting cell (APC) to present peptides to CD4+ T cells. The restriction molecules were determined by HLA class-antibody blocking. L57-69 was restricted by DRB1-1501 and L83-95 by DRB1-1602. The epitopes were recognized on autologous dendritic cells (DCs) loaded with rLpp20 but also those pulsed with whole cell lysates of H. pylori (HP-WCL), suggesting that these epitopes are naturally processed and presented by APC. CD4+ T cells were isolated from H. pylori-infected patients and stimulated with L57-69 and L83-95. These two epitopes were able to stimulate CD4+ T cell proliferation. This study may be of value for the future development of potential H. pylori vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is a global health problem because of limited treatments and poor prognosis. Annonaceous acetogenins (ACGs) has been reported to exert anti-tumorigenic effects in cancer, yet the mechanism underlying its effects on GC remains largely unknown. Notch signaling plays a critical role in cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Therefore, it may contribute to the development of GC. This study aims to explore the role of Notch2 in ACGs' activities in GC cells. RESULTS: ACGs inhibited GC cells' viability in a dose dependent manner and led to cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase with an increased Notch2 expression. Additionally, Notch2 siRNA reduced ACGs-induced cell growth inhibition while Notch2 cDNA transfection did the opposite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ACGs were administrated in GC cells and cell proliferation was assayed by MTS, cell apoptosis and cell cycle were detected by flow cytometry. Additionally, the expression of Notch2 and the downstream target Hes1 were identified by Western blot. Furthermore, Notch2-siRNA transfection and Notch2-cDNA were performed to investigate the role of Notch2 in the antitumor effect of ACGs. CONCLUSIONS: Up-regulation of Notch2 by ACGs is a potential therapeutic strategy for GC.

Barley, Hordeum vulgare (Doyce), was grown in the 3 media of soil, hydroponic sand solution (sand), and hydroponic water solution (water) culture at the same environmental conditions for 4 d. Barley roots were scanned, and root morphology was analyzed. Plants grown in the 3 media had different root morphology and nickel (Ni) toxicity response. Root elongations and total root lengths followed the sequence soil > sand > water. Plants grown in water culture were more sensitive to Ni toxicity and had greater root hair length than those from soil and sand cultures, which increased root surface area. The unit root surface area as root surface area per centimeter of length of root followed the sequence water > sand > soil and was found to be related with root elongation. Including the unit root surface area, the difference in root elongation and 50% effective concentration were diminished, and percentage of root elongations can be improved with a root mean square error approximately 10% for plants grown in different media. Because the unit root surface area of plants in sand culture is closer to that in soil culture, the sand culture method, not water culture, is recommended for toxicity parameter estimation. A Terrestrial Biotic Ligand Model (TBLM) for Ni toxicity to barley root elongation (RE) developed from experiments conducted in sand culture was used to predict toxicity in non-calcareous soils. Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) concentrations and pH in sand solution were varied individually and TBLM parameters were computed. EC50 increased as Mg(2+) increased, whereas the effect of Ca(2+) was insignificant. TBLM parameters developed from sand culture were validated by toxicity tests in eight Ni-amended, non-calcareous soils. Additional to Ni(2+) toxicity, toxicity from all solution ions was modelled independently as an osmotic effect and needed to be included for soil culture results. The EC50s and EC10s in soil culture were predicted within twofold of measured results. These are close to the results obtained using parameters estimated from the soil culture data itself.

OBJECTIVE: To carry out pectus excavatum (PEx) screening among primary school students in Dongguan, with an attempt to establish a PEx screening program and provide epidemiological evidences for developing guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of PEx for young children. METHODS: A total of 479,402 primary school students who were already in school in 2012 or newly enrolled in 2013 from 422 primary schools in 32 towns in Dongguan, Guangdong Province were screened for PEx. Meanwhile, about 420 medical staff from the infirmaries of 422 primary schools were provided with a serial of training, with an attempt to establish a PEx screening program and network. RESULTS: Valid screening results were obtained from 477,627 pupils (99.62%) from 406 primary schools in 31 towns. These students aged 4-15 years (mean: 8.78 years), among whom there were 244,545 males (N1; mean age: 8.22 years) and 233,082 females (N2; mean age: 8.89 years). Totally 257 PEx patients were identified, yielding a prevalence of 0.583%, among whom there were 176 males (N3; mean age: 8.79 years) and 81 females (N4; mean age: 8.77 years). With the PEx patients as the PEx group and the healthy children as the control group, chi square test with gender as the dependent variable showed that the incidence of PEx was significantly different between male and female students (P=0.00) (N3:N4 =2.172:1). In addition, 410 medical staff from the school infirmaries were trained, and a PEx screening program and network was established. CONCLUSIONS: The screening for PEx was successfully performed among pupils who were already in school in 2012 or newly enrolled in 2013 from 422 primary schools in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. Statistical analysis showed that the incidence of PEx differed between male and female pupils. A stable effective PEx screening program was established, which will provide personal and technical supports for the early diagnosis and treatment of this condition.
