OBJECTIVES: To critically appraise the psychometric properties of light touch-pressure somatosensory assessments to provide guidance for tool selection for research or clinical purposes. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PsycInfo were searched for research indexed from January 1990-November 2022. English language and human subject filters were applied. "Somatosensation", "psychometric property", and "nervous system-based health condition" search terms were combined. Grey literature and manual searches were conducted to ensure thoroughness. REVIEW METHODS: The reliability, construct validity, and/or measurement error of light touch-pressure assessments was reviewed in adult populations with neurological disorders. Reviewers individually extracted and managed data including patient demographics, assessment characteristics, statistical methods, and psychometric properties. Methodological quality of results was evaluated using an adapted version of the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments checklist. RESULTS: Thirty-three of 1938 articles were included for review. Fifteen light touch-pressure assessments demonstrated good or excellent reliability. Further, five of those 15 assessments achieved adequate validity and one of the 15 assessments achieved adequate measurement error. Over 80% of the summarized study ratings were determined to be of low or very low quality. CONCLUSION: We recommend using electrical perceptual tests, the Semmes-Weinstein Monofilaments, the Graded and Redefined Assessment of Strength, Sensibility, and Prehension, and the Moving Touch Pressure Test given that they demonstrated good to excellent results in three psychometric properties. No other assessment achieved adequate ratings in more than two psychometric properties. This review highlights a fundamental need to develop sensory assessments that are reliable, valid, and sensitive to change.

BACKGROUND: Restoring community walking remains a highly valued goal for persons recovering from traumatic incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Recently, studies report that brief episodes of low-oxygen breathing (acute intermittent hypoxia, AIH) may serve as an effective plasticity-inducing primer that enhances the effects of walking therapy in persons with chronic (> 1 year) SCI. More persistent walking recovery may occur following repetitive (weeks) AIH treatment involving persons with more acute SCI, but this possibility remains unknown. Here we present our clinical trial protocol, designed to examine the distinct influences of repetitive AIH, with and without walking practice, on walking recovery in persons with sub-acute SCI (< 12 months) SCI. Our overarching hypothesis is that daily exposure (10 sessions, 2 weeks) to AIH will enhance walking recovery in ambulatory and non-ambulatory persons with subacute (< 12 months) SCI, presumably by harnessing endogenous mechanisms of plasticity that occur soon after injury. METHODS: To test our hypothesis, we are conducting a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial on 85 study participants who we stratify into two groups according to walking ability; those unable to walk (non-ambulatory group) and those able to walk (ambulatory group). The non-ambulatory group receives either daily AIH (15, 90s episodes at 10.0% O2 with 60s intervals at 20.9% O2) or daily SHAM (15, 90s episodes at 20.9% O2 with 60s intervals at 20.9% O2) intervention. The ambulatory group receives either 60-min walking practice (WALK), daily AIH + WALK, or daily SHAM+WALK intervention. Our primary outcome measures assess overground walking speed (10-Meter Walk Test), endurance (6-Minute Walk Test), and balance (Timed Up & Go Test). For safety, we also measure levels of pain, spasticity, systemic hypertension, and autonomic dysreflexia. We record outcome measures at baseline, days 5 and 10, and follow-ups at 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, and 12 months post-treatment. DISCUSSION: The goal of this clinical trial is to reveal the extent to which daily AIH, alone or in combination with task-specific walking practice, safely promotes persistent recovery of walking in persons with traumatic, subacute SCI. Outcomes from this study may provide new insight into ways to enhance walking recovery in persons with SCI. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02632422 . Registered 16 December 2015.

Extensive research has been done to characterize transport of bacteria in porous media; however, little is understood on how the presence of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) coupled with the growth state and carbon source of bacteria affect bacterial transport. The objective of this research is to quantify the bacterial adhesion of Pseudomonas saccharophilia P15 (P15), which is known to biodegrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and to interact with coal tars, within a NAPL-water-mineral system. Through a series of short-pulse column experiments, the transport and deposition of P15 in porous media (quartz sand) as a function of growth state and carbon sources (peptone and naphthalene), and in the presence and absence of residual NAPL (hexadecane), is measured and evaluated. Coating 20% of the quartz grain with hexadecane as a model NAPL increased the retention of P15 by as much as a factor of 26 as compared to the retention exhibited in quartz sand with no NAPL present. P15 grown on peptone and in the late exponential growth state exhibited a greater amount of deposition within the hexadecane column than when it was grown on naphthalene or was in early exponential growth phase. During early growth stage P15 grown on naphthalene adhered stronger to the porous media compared to when grown on peptone. Results were compared with results of MATH assays, where P15 partitioning to hexadecane was evaluated as a function of carbon source and growth state.
