RESUMO

Brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the most destructive insects affecting rice (Oryza sativa L.) production. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) is a key enzyme involved in plant defense against pathogens, but the role of PAL in insect resistance is still poorly understood. Here we show that expression of the majority of PALs in rice is significantly induced by BPH feeding. Knockdown of OsPALs significantly reduces BPH resistance, whereas overexpression of OsPAL8 in a susceptible rice cultivar significantly enhances its BPH resistance. We found that OsPALs mediate resistance to BPH by regulating the biosynthesis and accumulation of salicylic acid and lignin. Furthermore, we show that expression of OsPAL6 and OsPAL8 in response to BPH attack is directly up-regulated by OsMYB30, an R2R3 MYB transcription factor. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the phenylpropanoid pathway plays an important role in BPH resistance response, and provide valuable targets for genetic improvement of BPH resistance in rice.

RESUMO

Plant defense responses against insect pests are intricately regulated by highly complex regulatory networks. Post-translational modifications (PTMs) of histones modulate the expression of genes involved in various biological processes. However, the role of PTMs in conferring insect resistance remains unclear. Through the screening of a T-DNA insertion activation-tagged mutant collection in rice, we identified the mutant planthopper susceptible 1 (phs1), which exhibits heightened expression of SET domain group 703 (SDG703). This overexpression is associated with increased susceptibility to the small brown planthopper (SBPH), an economically significant insect pest affecting rice crops. SDG703 is constitutively expressed in multiple tissues and shows substantial upregulation in response to SBPH feeding. SDG703 demonstrates the activity of histone H3K9 methyltransferase. Transcriptomic analysis revealed the downregulation of genes involved in effector-triggered immunity (ETI) and pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) in plants overexpressing SDG703. Among the downregulated genes, the overexpression of SDG703 in plants resulted in a higher level of histone H3K9 methylation compared to control plants. Collectively, these findings indicate that SDG703 suppresses the expression of defense-related genes through the promotion of histone methylation, consequently leading to reduced resistance against SBPH. The defense-related genes regulated by histone methylation present valuable targets for developing effective pest management strategies in future studies. Furthermore, our study provides novel insight into the epigenetic regulation involved in plant-insect resistance.

RESUMO

Plants have evolved a sophisticated defense system that employs various hormone pathways to defend against attacks by insect pests. Cytokinin (CK) plays an important role in plant growth and stress tolerance, but the role of CKs in plant-insect interaction remains largely unclear. Here, we report that CKs act as a positive regulator in rice resistance against brown planthopper (BPH), a devastating insect pest of rice. We found that BPH feeding promotes CK biosynthesis and signaling in rice. Exogenous application of CKs significantly increased the rice resistance to BPH. Increasing endogenous CKs by knocking out cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (OsCKXs) led to enhanced resistance to BPH. Moreover, the levels of the plant hormone jasmonic acid (JA) and the expression of JA-responsive genes were elevated by CK treatment and in OsCKXs knockout plants. Furthermore, JA-deficient mutant og1 was more susceptible to BPH, and CK-induced BPH resistance was suppressed in og1. These results indicate that CK-mediated BPH resistance is JA-dependent. Our findings provide the direct evidence for the novel role of CK in promoting insect resistance, and demonstrate that CK-induced insect resistance is JA-dependent. These results provide important guidance for effective pest management strategies in the future.

RESUMO

Improved knowledge of the interactions between plants and insects will facilitate better insect control in crops. Brassinosteroids (BRs) play a vital role in plant growth, developmental processes, and responses to pathogen infection, but the role of BRs in interactions between plants and insects remain largely unknown. In this study, we characterized a negative role of BRs in rice defense against brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) and examined its underlying mechanisms. We found that BPH infestation suppressed the BR pathway while successively activating the salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) pathways. In addition, BR-overproducing mutants and plants treated with 24-epibrassinolide (BL) showed increased susceptibility to BPH, whereas BR-deficient mutants were more resistant than the wild-type. BRs down-regulated the expression of genes related to the SA pathway and reduced SA content while genes related to the JA pathway were up-regulated and JA content increased after BPH infestation. Furthermore, BR-mediated suppression of the SA pathway was impaired both in JA-deficient and JA-insensitive mutants. Our results demonstrate that BRs promote the susceptibility of rice plants to BPH by modulating the SA and JA pathways.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Lung squamous cell carcinoma (lung SCC) is a common type of lung cancer, but its mechanism of pathogenesis is unclear. The aim of this study was to identify key transcription factors in lung SCC and elucidate its mechanism. MATERIAL AND METHODS Six published microarray datasets of lung SCC were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) for integrated bioinformatics analysis. Significance analysis of microarrays was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between lung SCC and normal controls. The biological functions and signaling pathways of DEGs were mapped in the Gene Otology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway database, respectively. A transcription factor gene regulatory network was used to obtain insights into the functions of DEGs. RESULTS A total of 1,011 genes, including 539 upregulated genes and 462 downregulated genes, were filtered as DEGs between lung SCC and normal controls. DEGs were significantly enriched in cell cycle, DNA replication, p53 signaling pathway, pathways in cancer, adherens junction, and cell adhesion molecules signaling pathways. There were 57 transcription factors identified, which were used to construct a regulatory network. The network consisted of 736 interactions between 49 transcription factors and 486 DEGs. NFIC, BRCA1, and NFATC2 were the top 3 transcription factors that had the highest connectivity with DEGs and that regulated 83, 82, and 75 DEGs in the network, respectively. CONCLUSIONS NFIC, BRCA1, and NFATC2 might be the key transcription factors in the development of lung SCC by regulating the genes involved in cell cycle and DNA replication pathways.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although posterior mediastinal (PM) route and retrosternal (RS) route have been used for reconstruction after minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE), the optimal route remains controversial. This study reviewed our experiences with McKeown MIEs for esophageal cancer and aimed to investigate which route was better for esophageal reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From December 2011 to December 2013, 103 patients who underwent McKeown MIE and esophageal reconstruction by PM or RS routes were reviewed. The decision regarding which approach was appropriated mainly depended on the first surgeon's preference and experience. Baseline demographics, operative, and postoperative data of the patients were analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-six and forty-seven patients receiving PM and RS route reconstruction were reviewed, respectively. Shorter operation time (P = 0.001), less blood loss (P = 0.029), and longer route length (P < 0.001) were observed in PM route compared with RS route. No difference was observed in the resection type, harvested lymph node, intensive care unit and hospital stay, postoperative complications, and in-hospital mortality between the two routes (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both RS route and PM route were safe and effective. PM route was associated with shorter operation time, less blood loss, but longer route length compared with RS route.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To improve the understanding of pulmonary mucormycosis by analyzing the clinical manifestations, imaging features, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of this disease. METHODS: The clinical data of eight patients diagnosed as pulmonary mucormycosis by histopathologic examination were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Eight patients included six males and two females with age from 36 days to 66 years. Underlying conditions covered diabetes (n = 4), renal transplantation (n = 3), premature (n = 1) and long-term corticosteroid treatment in two cases. Imaging manifestations revealed multiple irregular lumps or nodules in three cases, multiple cavities with thick wall in three cases, diffuse lung infiltrate in one case and lung opacities in one case. The diagnoses of seven patients were confirmed by percutaneous needle lung biopsy and the remaining one was diagnosed with fiberoptic bronchoscopy biopsy. Surgery combined with amphotericin B liposome (60 mg/d for three weeks) was applied to one patient who was cured with no recurrence after a 22 month follow-up. Three cases were given amphotericin B liposome (a newborn with 7mg/d for 62 days, the other two 60 mg/d for 31 days and 70 mg/d for 71 days respectively). All had achieved marked response with follow up from 8 to 29 months, but one patient relapsed and died of recurrent lung mucormycosis. The other three patients were treated with itraconazole 400-200 mg/d from 21 days to 1 year with duration of follow up from 1 month to 20 months. One patient was not evaluable due to missing. Two patients relapsed and one died. CONCLUSION: Pulmonary mucormycosis is difficult to diagnose and treat with a high mortality. Percutaneous transthoracic lung biopsy is a useful diagnostic method. Amphotericin B liposome or itraconazole may be active against mucus. Early control of causes is essential to improve the prognosis and reduce the recurrence in patients with pulmonary mucormycosis.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is considered a valuable asset in China's medical tradition. YPF is a classic prescription that has been derived from the "Jiu Yuan Fang" formula and consists of three herbs: Huangqi (Astragalus membranaceus Bunge), Baizhu (Atractylodes rubra Dekker), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia divaricata (Turcz.) Schischk). This prescription is widely acclaimed for its exceptional pharmacological properties, including potent antioxidant effects, hormone regulation, and immune modulation effects. AIM OF THE STUDY: Previous research provides evidence suggesting that YPF may have therapeutic effects on pulmonary fibrosis. Further exploration is essential to confirm its effectiveness and elucidate the fundamental processes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, the active components and target genes of YPF were extracted from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology (TCMSP) database. Next, the GSE53845 dataset, which contains information on pulmonary fibrosis, was downloaded from the GEO database. Network informatics methods was then be utilized to identify target genes associated with pulmonary fibrosis. A YPF-based network of protein-protein interactions was constructed to pinpoint possible target genes for pulmonary fibrosis treatment. Additionally, an in vitro model of pulmonary fibrosis induced by bleomycin (BLM) was established to further investigate and validate the possible mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of YPF. RESULTS: In this study, a total of 24 active ingredients of YPF, along with 178 target genes associated with the treatment, were identified. Additionally, 615 target genes related to pulmonary fibrosis were identified. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that 18 candidate genes (CGs) exhibited significant responses to tumor necrosis factor, NF-kB survival signaling, and positive regulation of apoptosis processes. Among these CGs, CAV1, VCAM1, and TP63 were identified as key target genes. Furthermore, cell experiments confirmed that the expression of CAV1 protein and RNA expression was increased in pulmonary fibrosis, but significantly decreased after treatment with YPF. Additionally, the expression of pSmad2, α-SMA, TGF-ß1, and TNF-α was also decreased following YPF treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Network pharmacology analysis revealed that YPF exhibits significant potential as a therapeutic intervention for pulmonary fibrosis by targeting various compounds and pathways. This study emphasizes that the efficacy of YPF in treating pulmonary fibrosis may be attributed to its ability to up-regulate CAV1 expression and inhibiting pulmonary fibrosis via modulation of the TGF-ß1/Smad2 signaling pathway. These findings underscore the promising role of YPF and its ability to potentially alleviate pulmonary fibrosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To avoid the disadvantages of chronic pain and chest wall paresthesia associated with video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) procedures, we developed a novel surgical technique for performing sympathectomy by embryonic natural orifice transumbilical endoscopic surgery (E-NOTES) with a flexible endoscope. In this study, we compared the outcomes of E-NOTES with conventional VATS thoracic sympathectomy on palmar hyperhidrosis. METHODS: From January 2010 to April 2011, a total of 66 patients with severe palmar hyperhidrosis were treated with thoracic sympathectomy in our department. Thirty-four transumbilical thoracic sympathectomies were performed via a 5-mm umbilicus incision with ultrathin gastroscope, then compared with 32 conventional needlescopic thoracic sympathectomies. Retrospective statistical analysis of a prospectively collected group of patients was performed. RESULTS: There was no significant difference with regard to gender, mean age, body mass index, and length of hospital stay between the two groups. The operative time for E-NOTES thoracic sympathectomy was longer than that of VATS thoracic sympathectomy (56.4 ± 10.8 vs. 40.3 ± 6.5 min, p < 0.01). No mortality, diaphragmatic hernia, or Horner syndrome was observed in either group. Postoperative questionnaires were returned by all treated patients with a mean time from operation to follow-up of 1.4 ± 0.3 years. All 66 patients receiving sympathectomy reported successful treatment of their palmar hyperhidrosis. Compensatory hyperhidrosis was noticed in 7 (20.1 %) and 6 (18.8 %) patients in the E-NOTES and VATS groups, respectively (p > 0.05). Postoperative pain and paresthesia were significantly reduced in the E-NOTES group at each time interval, and the aesthetic effect of the incision was superior in the E-NOTES group. CONCLUSIONS: Transumbilical-diaphragmatic thoracic sympathectomy is a safe and efficacious alternative to the conventional approach. This novel procedure can further reduce postoperative pain and chest wall paresthesia as well as afford maximum cosmetic benefits by hiding the surgical incision in the umbilicus.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical features, radiology, diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary cryptococcosis. METHODS: A total of 38 cases of pulmonary cryptococcosis, confirmed by pathological examinations at Fuzhou General Clinical Medical College, Fujian Medical University from March 2003 to February 2010, were retrospectively studied. RESULTS: All of the cases were community-acquired. The patients consisted of 29 males and 9 females, aged from 21 to 70 years. There were no underlying diseases in 29 cases. The CD(4) cell numbers were normal in 20 patients. Radiological study showed that the majority of the lesions (35 cases) were close to the pleura. Lower lungs were often involved (left 21 and right 23). Pulmonary nodules, either solitary nodules (11 cases) or multiple nodules (16 cases), were the most common CT finding. The lesions had a higher standardized uptake value (SUV) in 4 patients with a PET-CT scan. The lung specimens of 33 cases were obtained by CT guided transthoracic needle aspiration biopsy. The disease was cured in 34 cases, and improved in 3 cases, but 1 died. CONCLUSIONS: Pulmonary cryptococcosis must be considered in the differential diagnosis of lesions of the lungs. The disease has some characteristics on radiology, such as multiple lesions, always close to the pleura and occurs frequently in the lower lungs. CT guided percutaneous biopsy is a safe and effective method for diagnosis.

RESUMO

Vectorizing vortex-core lines is crucial for high-quality visualization and analysis of turbulence. While several techniques exist in the literature, they can only be applied to classical fluids. As quantum fluids with turbulence are gaining attention in physics, extracting and visualizing vortex-core lines for quantum fluids is increasingly desirable. In this article, we develop an efficient vortex-core line vectorization method for quantum fluids enabling real-time visualization of high-resolution quantum turbulence structure. From a dataset obtained through simulation, our technique first identifies vortex nodes based on the circulation field. To vectorize the vortex-core lines interpolating these vortex nodes, we propose a novel graph-based data structure, with iterative graph reduction and density-guided local optimization, to locate sub-grid-scale vortex-core line samples more precisely, which are then vectorized by continuous curves. This vortex-core representation naturally captures complex topology, such as branching during reconnection. Our vectorization approach reduces memory consumption by orders of magnitude, enabling real-time visualization performance. Different types of interactive visualizations are demonstrated to show the effectiveness of our technique, which could help further research on quantum turbulence.

RESUMO

Multiphase flows exhibit a large realm of complex behaviors such as bubbling, glugging, wetting, and splashing which emerge from air-water and water-solid interactions. Current fluid solvers in graphics have demonstrated remarkable success in reproducing each of these visual effects, but none have offered a model general enough to capture all of them concurrently. In contrast, computational fluid dynamics have developed very general approaches to multiphase flows, typically based on kinetic models. Yet, in both communities, there is dearth of methods that can simulate density ratios and Reynolds numbers required for the type of challenging real-life simulations that movie productions strive to digitally create, such as air-water flows. In this article, we propose a kinetic model of the coupling of the Navier-Stokes equations with a conservative phase-field equation, and provide a series of numerical improvements over existing kinetic-based approaches to offer a general multiphase flow solver. The resulting algorithm is embarrassingly parallel, conservative, far more stable than current solvers even for real-life conditions, and general enough to capture the typical multiphase flow behaviors. Various simulation results are presented, including comparisons to both previous work and real footage, to highlight the advantages of our new method.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River plain produce the second highest amount of wheat in China; however, waterlogging is an important environmental factor that substantially affects the yield production of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in this region. METHODS: In this study, seven treatments were implemented, including no waterlogging and exogenous 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) as a control (CK); waterlogging at booting (BW), anthesis (AW) and 15 days after anthesis (DAA, FW); and spraying 6-BA before waterlogging at booting (BW-6BA), anthesis (AW-6BA) and 15 DAA (FW-6BA), to determine the ability of 6-BA to alleviate the harmful impact of waterlogging on aboveground biomass production and grain yield. The widely cultivated wheat cultivar "Zhengmai 9023" was used. RESULTS: The results showed that more than 190.0 mm of rainfall, which accounted for approximately 45.0% of the precipitation over the whole wheat growing season, was distributed after the booting stage (April and May). In all waterlogged treatments, the photosynthetic rate, aboveground biomass and grain yield decreased, but the differences between the CK and the FW treatment were not significant. The grain yield decreased by 18.38%, 41.79% and 5.67% in the BW, AW and FW treatments, respectively. Spraying 6-BA before waterlogging enhanced the root activities after anthesis and then decreased the malondialdehyde concentrations of the flag leaves and the third leaf, increased the photosynthetic rate of the flag leaves and enhanced aboveground biomass and grain yield. Among the increments between the treatments, the increments between the BW and BW-6BA treatments were the largest, but between the FW and FW-6BA were smallest. In comparison to the other waterlogging treatments, the grain yields from the FW and FW-6BA treatments were significantly higher because of the higher kernel numbers per spike. The results indicated that waterlogging after the booting stage restrained the dry matter production of winter wheat, but spraying 6-BA before waterlogging slowed the plant senescence rate and reduced grain yield loss.

RESUMO

In the present study, we address the development and application of an efficient tool for conversion of results obtained by an integrated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational reaction dynamics (CRD) approach and their visualization in the Google Earth. We focus on results typical for environmental fluid mechanics studies at a city scale that include characteristic wind flow patterns and dispersion of reactive scalars. This is achieved by developing a code based on the Java language, which converts the typical four-dimensional structure (spatial and temporal dependency) of data results in the Keyhole Markup Language (KML) format. The visualization techniques most often used are revisited and implemented into the conversion tool. The potential of the tool is demonstrated in a case study of smog formation due to an intense traffic emission in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). It is shown that the Google Earth can provide a computationally efficient and user-friendly means of data representation. This feature can be very useful for visualization of pollution at street levels, which is of great importance for the city residents. Various meteorological and traffic emissions can be easily visualized and analyzed, providing a powerful, user-friendly tool for traffic regulations and urban climate adaptations.

RESUMO

Changes in the rapeseed branch angle alter plant architecture, allowing more efficient light capture as planting density increases. In this study, a natural population of rapeseed was grown in three environments and evaluated for branch angle trait to characterize their phenotypic patterns and genotype with a 60K Brassica Infinium SNP array. Significant phenotypic variation was observed from 20 to 70°. As a result, 25 significant quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with branch angle were identified on chromosomes A2, A3, A7, C3, C5, and C7 by the MLM model in TASSEL 4.0. Orthologs of the functional candidate genes involved in branch angle were identified. Among the key QTL, the peak SNPs were close to the key orthologous genes BnaA.Lazy1 and BnaC.Lazy1 on A3 and C3 homologous genome blocks. With the exception of Lazy (LA) orthologous genes, SQUMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN LIKE 14 (SPL14) and an auxin-responsive GRETCHEN HAGEN 3 (GH3) genes from Arabidopsis thaliana were identified close to two clusters of SNPs on the A7 and C7 chromosomes. These findings on multiple novel loci and candidate genes of branch angle will be useful for further understanding and genetic improvement of plant architecture in rapeseed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Gefitinib is effective epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKI) for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, but with the drug use, inevitable gefitinib-resistance and severe complications were observed and resulted in failure treatments. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the curative effect of different treatment of navelbine plus cisplatin in combination with gefitinib and gefitinib single on gefitinib-resistance advanced NSCLC patients. METHODS: Total Of 120 patients acquired gefitinib-resistance NSCLC patients treated in Taian City Central Hospital of Shandong province from May, 2010 to June, 2014 were incorporated in our study according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The patients were divided into chemotherapeutical group and gefitinib group and the mean follow-up was 12 months (6-39 months), the information of patients was recorded as gender, age, smoking, complications, hepatic metastasis, bone metastasis, brain metastasis and acquired chemotherapy or not. Chi-square test and t-test were performed to analyzed collection data, Log-rank was analyzed significance of survival time among groups and Cox regression was evaluated independent risk factors of survival analysis. RESULTS: The survival time of chemotherapy group was significantly longer than gefitinib group; the survival time among the two groups was 29.06 and 15.23 months (P<0.05), respectively. Multivariate Cox regression analyzed that lesion's metastasis (hepatic metastasis, bone metastasis and brain metastasis) and acquired chemotherapy were independent risk factors influence on patients overall survival time; gender, age, smoking, complications had no significance influence on survival time between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Lesion's metastasis and acquired chemotherapy were independent risk factors influence on patients' overall survival time and the survival time of chemotherapy group was significantly longer than gefitinib group.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To provide an anatomical basis for selecting optimal retrograde cardioplegia technique therefore to improve the effect of the operation. METHODS: Fifty formalin-fixed adult human cadaveric hearts were collected in this study, and special attention was given to the observation of the coronary sinus tributary drainage and the anatomical relationship between the orifice of the coronary sinus and the atrioventricular nodal artery. RESULTS: Although the majority of the tributaries drained into the coronary sinus, it was identified in 15 cases that the posterior vein of the left ventricle and in another 2 cases the small cardiac vein (SCV) made their way into the middle cardiac vein (MCV) respectively. In 6 cases MCV solely joined the right atrium, which was joined by SCV only in 1 case. Draining into the coronary sinus as seen in 44 cases, MCV had an opening 3.4+/-1.5 mm away from the orifice of the coronary sinus. In the direction perpendicular to the long axis of the coronary sinus orifice, the anterior and posterior extreme points were 4.9+/-2.5 mm and 9.9+/-4.2 mm respectively, away from the atrioventricular nodal artery, which crossed the long axis of the coronary sinus orifice at an angle of 21.2+/-15.6 degrees. The right atrial wall on both sides of the coronary sinus orifice was of a uniform thickness of 1.1+/-0.2 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Direct-vision non-balloon-tipped cannulation conforms better to the anatomical features described above. In purse-string suture, however, sufficient care should be taken of the dangerously thin inferior atrial wall and the close relationship between the coronary sinus orifice and the atrioventricular nodal artery. For better cardioprotective effect of retrograde cardioplegia, non-balloon-tipped cannula under direct vision should be adopted with the assistance of antegrade perfusion and, when necessary, additional transfusion via the exotic MCV opening may be used when the opening appears relatively wide.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Primary palmar hyperhidrosis is very common in women. Video-assisted thoracic sympathectomy is recognized as an effective treatment for patients with severe hyperhidrosis, which has usually been performed with more than 2 skin incisions. We developed a novel approach for thoracic sympathectomy in women with palmar hyperhidrosis through the umbilicus using an ultrathin gastroscope. The approach requires only 1 tiny incision, which is hidden in the umbilicus. METHODS: Under general anesthesia, patients were intubated with a dual-lumen endotracheal tube. Through the incision in the umbilicus, a newly developed long trocar was inserted into the abdominal cavity. After insertion of the ultrathin gastroscope through this trocar, a small incision was created on the both sides of diaphragm by a needle knife. The endoscope was introduced into the thoracic cavity through the incision made in the left or right diaphragm. The sympathetic chain was identified at the desired thoracic level and ablated. RESULTS: From January 10, 2010, to November 30, 2011, 25 women underwent transumbilical-diaphragmatic thoracic sympathectomy. The mean operating room time for the entire bilateral procedure was 56.9 ± 6.9 minutes. There were no significant postoperative complications. The symptoms disappeared in all patients. Compensatory sweating was reported in 56%. All of the patients were satisfied with the surgical results and the cosmetic outcome of the incision. CONCLUSIONS: Transumbilical thoracic sympathectomy with the ultrathin flexible endoscope was a safe and effective option for women with severe palmar hyperhidrosis that provided excellent cosmetic outcomes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of Aurora-B in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues and NSCLC cell lines. METHOD: Aurora-B expression was examined using immunohistochemical SP method in 91 stage I and 69 stage II-III NSCLC tissues and 40 adjacent tissues. The mRNA and protein expressions of Aurora-B in NSCLC cell lines (A549, H460 and H1299) were examined by RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. RESULTS: The protein expression of Aurora-B was detected in 77.7% (94/121) of the tumor tissues and 9.8% (4/41) of the adjacent tissues, showing a significant difference between them (P<0.01). The positivity rate of Aurora-B protein was not related with the gender and age of NSCLC patients, but with lymph node metastasis, differentiation and histological type of NSCLC (P<0.05). Aurora-B was expressed in all the NSCLC cell lines (A549, H460 and H1299) at both mRNA and protein levels. A549 cells showed the highest expression of Aurora-B. CONCLUSION: Aurora-B protein is highly expressed in NSCLC tissues and cell lines, and may play a crucial role in the invasion, metastasis and development of NSCLC. The mRNA and protein expression levels of Aurora-B differ significantly between different NSCLC cell lines.

RESUMO

To investigate the relationship between the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) of the bcr and abl gene and chronic myelogeous leukemia (CML), the 9 sequence-tagged sites (STS) in bcr and abl gene were screened by DNA pooling and denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (dHPLC), and the results were varified by sequencing. The results showed that the polymorphism sites were detected in 4 out of the 9 STS fragments and there were 3 bases different from the reference sequence found in 3 fragments. In conclusion, the novel SNP in U07000 fragment shows significantly different frequencies between CML and controled people.
