RESUMO

The supraspinal mechanism plays a key role in developing and maintaining chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). However, it is not clear how white matter changes in young and middle-aged males with CP/CPPS. In this cross-sectional study, 23 CP/CPPS patients and 22 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Tract-based spatial statistics was applied to investigate the differences in diffusion tensor imaging metrics, including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusion (MD), radial diffusion (RD) and axial diffusion (AD), between CP/CPPS patients and HCs. The study also examined the association between white matter alterations and clinical variables in patients using correlation analysis. Compared with HCs, patients showed decreased FA, MD, RD and AD in the body and genu of the corpus callosum and right anterior corona radiata. In addition, they showed increased FA along with decreased MD, RD and AD in the left posterior limb of the internal capsule (PLIC-L), left external capsule and left cerebral peduncle. The FA of PLIC-L was negatively correlated with disease duration (r = -.54, corrected p = .017), while MD and RD were positively correlated (r = .45, corrected p = .042; r = .57, corrected p = .017). These results suggest that CP/CPPS is associated with extensive changes in white matter tracts, which are involved in pain processing. In particular, the FA, MD and RD values in the PLIC-L were correlated with the disease duration, indicating that the long-term course of CP/CPPS may have effects on the white matter microstructure of the pain perception pathways.

RESUMO

In this study, a water-soluble polysaccharide from Eucommia folium was extracted by hot water and purified using Sephadex G-200 gel columns. The results showed that the purified fraction (EFP) has a molecular weight of 9.98 × 105 Da and consisted of rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose, xylose, galacturonic acid, and glucuronic acid (molar ratio: 0.226: 1.739: 2.183: 1: 0.155: 0.321: 0.358: 0.047). The combination of infrared spectroscopy and NMR analysis proved that EFP is an acidic polysaccharide whose main chain consists of α-L-Araf-(1 → , → 3,5)-α-Araf-(1 → , → 3)-ß-Galp-(1 → , → 3,6)-ß-Glcp-(1 → , → 2)-α-D-Manp-(1 → , → 4)-α-GalpA-(1 → , → 2,4)-α-Rhap-(1 → . In addition, the in vivo antitumoral activity of EFP was studied using a H22 tumor-bearing mice model. EFP effectively inhibited tumor growth in mice following intragastric administration. By Combining with the results of the apoptosis assay and JC-1 staining analysis, we confirmed that EFP induces apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway. Furthermore, cell cycle analysis demonstrated that EFP blocks the cell cycle at S phase.

RESUMO

Protein hydrolysates from various sources, including tuna cooking juice, soy protein isolate, sodium caseinate, wheat gluten and skin gelatin from porcine, tilapia, halibut and milkfish were analyzed to screen their antiproliferative activities against the human oral squamous carcinoma cell line, HSC-3. The soy protein isolate was selected for further investigations based on its hydrolysates with bromelain (SB) and thermolysin (ST), showing the greatest inhibition of cell growth. The SB and ST hydrolysates showed antiproliferative activities up to 35.45-76.39% against HSC-3 cells at 72 h, and their IC50 values were 0.74 and 0.60 mg/mL, respectively. SB and ST induced cell cycle arrest in the S phase through a pathway independent of p21 and p27 protein expression. Further, ST induced the apoptosis of HSC-3 cells by downregulating expression of Bcl-2, PARP, caspase 3 and caspase 9, but an upregulating expression of p53 and cleaved caspase 3. Unlike ST, SB may induce necrosis on HSC-3 cells. Thus, soybean hydrolysates may be a good source for providing antiproliferative peptides against HSC-3, while SB and ST may have the potential to be developed as functional foods.

RESUMO

KEY MESSAGE: In this manuscript, we demonstrated the negative role of CPK9 in stomatal ABA signaling, and both CPK9 and CPK33 for accurate guard cell function was explored via cpk9/cpk33 double mutants' phenotype. Abscisic acid (ABA) can inhibit stomatal opening and promote stomatal closure by regulating ion channel activity in guard cell membranes. As an important second messenger, calcium (Ca2+) is essentially needed in ABA regulation of stomatal movement. Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) have been proposed to contribute to central Ca2+ signal transduction in plants. Here, we report the functional characterization of CPK9 in Arabidopsis stomatal ABA signaling. CPK9 had high expression in guard cells and the protein was subcellularly located in the cell membrane. A loss-of-function mutant cpk9 showed a much more sensitive phenotype to ABA regulation of stomatal movement and ion channel activity, while CPK9 overexpression lines had opposite phonotypes. These findings demonstrated the negative role of CPK9 in stomatal ABA signaling. As the closest homolog of CPK33, we also proved that stomatal movement of the cpk9/cpk33 double mutants was more sensitive to ABA than either single mutants. These results revealed the role of CPK9 in guard cells, and the need of both CPK9 and CPK33 for accurate guard cell function.

RESUMO

To explore the regularity of traditional Chinese patent medicines for the treatment of hyperlipidemia recorded in Newly Edited National Chinese Traditional Patent Medicines, the Composition Principles of Chinese Patent Drugs,New Drug Conversion Standard, the Compilation of National Standard for Traditional Chinese Medicines and Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Researchers extracted the information of prescriptions from these cases according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Then microsoft excel 2010 was used to conduct frequency statistics and count the frequency of traditional Chinese medicine. SPSS Clementine( ver.12. 0) and SPSS( ver. 18. 0)were adopted respectively for frequency analysis, association rules analysis, cluster analysis and factor analysis. Besides,KMO test and Bartlett spherical test were performed for factor adaptation test. Finally,a total of 173 traditional Chinese medicines were included, involving 94 Chinese patent medicine prescriptions. The frequency results of traditional Chinese medicine showed that there were 33 kinds of high-frequency traditional Chinese medicine, mainly including those for tonifying medicine, activating blood and resolving stasis and blood-stasis,and clearing damp. The association rules analysis found out 12 association rules of drug pairs,3-herb pairs of 25 and4-herb pairs of 6. Totally 11 medicine groups with relevance were respectively extracted by cluster analysis. KMO test and Bartlett spherical test indicated that the method was suitable for factor analysis and 11 common factors were respectively extracted by factor analysis. The association rules reflected the therapeutic method for tonify the liver and kidney, activating blood and resolving stasis. Cluster analysis and factor analysis showed the therapeutic method of Qi-enriching and Yin-nourishing,and the factor analysis focused more on removing blood stasis and dampness. The decision tree with hawthorn as the dependent variable reflects the importance of alisma orientalis and fructus schisandrae in the drug matching. In conclusion, data mining technique can comprehensively analyze the regularity of prescriptions of traditional Chinese patent medicine for hyperlipidemia, and is helpful for guiding the development of Chinese patent medicines and the clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical value of serum neuroglobin in evaluating hypoglycemic brain injury in neonates. METHODS: A total of 100 neonates with hypoglycemia were enrolled as subjects. According to amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) findings and/or clinical manifestations, they were divided into symptomatic hypoglycemic brain injury group (n=22), asymptomatic hypoglycemic brain injury group (n=37) and hypoglycemic non-brain injury group (n=41). The three groups were compared in terms of blood glucose, duration of hypoglycemia, levels of neuroglobin and neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and modified aEEG score. The correlation of neuroglobin with NSE and modified aEEG score was analyzed. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted. RESULTS: Compared with the asymptomatic hypoglycemic brain injury and hypoglycemic non-brain injury groups, the symptomatic hypoglycemic brain injury group had significantly lower blood glucose and modified aEEG score, significantly higher neuroglobin and NSE levels, and a significantly longer duration of hypoglycemia (P<0.05). Compared with the hypoglycemic non-brain injury group, the asymptomatic hypoglycemic brain injury group had significantly lower blood glucose and modified aEEG score, significantly higher neuroglobin and NSE levels, and a significantly longer duration of hypoglycemia (P<0.05). Neuroglobin was positively correlated with NSE and duration of hypoglycemia (r=0.922 and 0.929 respectively; P<0.05) and negatively correlated with blood glucose and modified aEEG score (r=-0.849 and -0.968 respectively; P<0.05). The areas under the ROC curve of neuroglobin, NSE and modified aEEG score were 0.894, 0.890 and 0.941 respectively, and neuroglobin had a sensitivity of 80.8% and a specificity of 95.8% at the optimal cut-off value of 108 mg/L. CONCLUSIONS: Like NSE and modified aEEG score, serum neuroglobin can also be used as a specific indicator for the assessment of brain injury in neonates with hypoglycemia and has a certain value in clinical practice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Radical lymph node dissection (LND) along the bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is a surgically challenging procedure with a high rate of morbidity. Here, we assessed in a retrospective manner the adequacy of LND along the RLN performed with robot-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy (RATE) versus video-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy (VATE) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective, propensity-matched study. ESCC patients who underwent McKeown esophagectomy and bilateral RLN LND with a minimally invasive approach were divided into two groups according to the use of robot-assisted surgery or not (RATE vs VATE, respectively). Using propensity score matching, 34 balanced matched pairs were identified. The number of dissected nodes as well as the rates of RLN palsy and perioperative complications served as the main outcome measures. RESULTS: No conversion to open thoracotomy occurred in either group. Intraoperative blood loss and the need of blood transfusions did not show significant intergroup differences. The mean number of dissected nodes was similar in the two study groups, the only exception being the left RLN area. Specifically, the mean number of nodes removed from this region was 5.32 in the RATE group and 3.38 in patients who received VATE (p = 0.007). Notably, the RATE and VATE groups did not differ significantly with regard to rates of both RLN palsy (20.6 vs 29.4%, respectively, p = 0.401) and pulmonary complications (5.9 vs 17.6%, respectively, p = 0.259). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with VATE, RATE resulted in a higher lymph node yield along the left RLN without increasing morbidity.

RESUMO

Most ectotherms are able to increase their tolerance to heat stress via the acclimation response. However, there is ongoing debate about whether the acclimation response is associated with fitness costs, and what factors can affect the consequences of acclimation are still unclear. To elucidate this, we sought to determine whether fitness costs varied with acclimation conditions in two cereal aphids, Sitobion avenae and Rhopalosiphum padi. Thus, the basal and inducible thermal tolerances (maximum critical temperature [CTmax]) and fitness traits (proportion of adult emergence, adult longevity, fecundity, and population parameters) of adult aphids were measured under three conditions of developmental acclimation: 1) 22 °C constant temperature (no acclimation), 2) 22 °C + 34 °C for 2 h per day (low daytime temperature), and 3) 22 °C + 38 °C for 2 h per day (high daytime temperature). We found that the thermal tolerances of both species were significantly higher following developmental acclimations, where higher basal and inducible thermal tolerances were observed in R. padi than in S. avenae. Low daytime temperature acclimation conditions (34 °C) resulted in negligible reproductive costs and improved the intrinsic rates of population increase in both species. In contrast, substantial fitness costs were detected in both species in response to high daytime temperature acclimation (38 °C), especially for S. avenae. Our results indicate that the effects of acclimation conditions on fitness costs differ between the two aphid species. These findings will not only enhance our understanding of species dynamics in the context of climate change but could also potentially improve pest control efforts.

RESUMO

Biofortification of crops with exogenous iodine is a novel strategy to control iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). The bioaccessibility of iodine (BI) in the biofortified vegetables in the course of soaking, cooking and digestion, were examined. Under hydroponics, the concentration of iodine in leafstalks of the celery and pakchoi increased with increasing exogenous iodine concentration, 54.8-63.9% of the iodine absorbed by pakchoi was stored in the soluble cellular substance. Being soaked in water within 8 h, the iodine loss rate of the biofortified celery was 3.5-10.4% only. More than 80% of the iodine in the biofortified celery was retained after cooking under high temperature. The highest BI of the biofortified vegetables after digestion in simulated gastric and intestinal juice amounted to 74.08 and 68.28%, respectively. Factors influencing BI included pH, digestion duration, and liquid-to-solid ratio. The high BI of the biofortified vegetables provided a sound reference for the promotion of iodine biofortification as a tool to eliminate the IDD.

RESUMO

The polysaccharides of Astragalus membranaceus have received extensive study and attention, but there have been few reports on the extraction of these polysaccharides using cold water (4 °C). In this study, we fractionated a novel cold-water-soluble polysaccharide (cAMPs-1A) from Astragalus membranaceus with a 92.00% carbohydrate content using a DEAE-cellulose 52 anion exchange column and a Sephadex G-100 column. Our UV, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-performance gel permeation chromatography, and ion chromatography analysis results indicated the monosaccharide composition of cAMPs-1A with 1.23 × 104 Da molecular weight to be fucose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, and xylose, with molar ratios of 0.01:0.06:0.20:1.00:0.06, respectively. The UV spectroscopy detected no protein and nucleic acid in cAMPs-1A. We used FTIR analysis to characterize the α-d-pyranoid configuration in cAMPs-1A. In addition, we performed animal experiments in vivo to evaluate the antitumor and immunomodulatory effects of cAMPs-1A. The results suggested that cAMPs-1A oral administration could significantly inhibit tumor growth with the inhibitory rate of 20.53%, 36.50% and 44.49%, respectively, at the dosage of 75,150, and 300 mg/kg. Moreover, cAMPs-1A treatment could also effectively protect the immune organs, promote macrophage pinocytosis, and improve the percentages of lymphocyte subsets in the peripheral blood of tumor-bearing mice. These findings demonstrate that the polysaccharide cAMPs-1A has an underlying application as natural antitumor agents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Iodine deficiency is an environmental health problem affecting one-third of the global population. An iodine biofortification hydroponic experiment was conducted to explore the iodide and iodate uptake characteristics of strawberry plants, to measure the dosage effects of iodine on plant growth and to evaluate the influence of I- or IO3- application on fruit quality. RESULTS: After biofortification, the iodine contents of the fresh strawberry fruits were 600-4000 µg kg-1 , covering the WHO dietary iodine allowance of 150 µg · day-1 for adults. The iodine uptake of the strawberry plants increased with increasing I- or IO3- concentration of the culture solution. At the same iodine concentration, the iodate uptakes of various plant organs under I- treatments were apparently more than those under IO3- treatments. Low-level exogenous iodine (I- ≤ 0.25 mg L-1 or IO3- ≤ 0.50 mg L-1 ) not only promoted plant growth and increased biomass per plant, but also improved fruit quality by enhancing the vitamin C and soluble sugar contents of the strawberry fruits. Nevertheless, excessive exogenous iodine inhibited plant growth and reduced biomass per plant. IO3- uptake apparently increased the total acidity and nitrate content of the fruits, reducing the quality of the strawberry fruits. Conversely, I- uptake obviously decreased the total acidity and nitrate content of the strawberry fruits, improving the fruit quality. CONCLUSION: The strawberry can be used as a target crop for iodine biofortification. Furthermore, applying an appropriate dose of KI can improve the fruit quality of the strawberry plants. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutations are strongly associated with lung adenocarcinoma and favorable response to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor. The mutated EGFR proteins (EGFRs) are hyper-phosphorylated and refractory to receptor down-regulation. To address the discrepancy between hyper-phosphorylation and lack of down-regulation of mutant EGFRs, we have examined the expression of EGFR negative regulators in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines. We found that NSCLC cell lines expressing mutant EGFRs often had low expression of various negative regulators for EGFR. Among them, tumor suppressor CD82 was up-regulated by wild type (WT) EGFR but down-regulated by mutant EGFRs. Reconstitution of CD82 exerted stronger suppressive effects on mutant EGFRs than on WT EGFR. Active exportation of CD82 through the exosome was one of the mechanisms involved in achieving the overall CD82 down-regulation in mutant EGFR-expressing lung cancer cell lines. Over-expression of mutant EGFR protein frequently occurred in the lung cancer tissues of mutant EGFR-transgenic mice and also associated with CD82 down-regulation. Immunoblot analyses on the tumor tissues from 23 lung adenocarcinoma patients (12 with WT EGFR, and 11 with mutant EGFRs) also identified significantly stronger down-regulation of CD82 in tumors with mutant EGFRs than WT. Our data indicate that CD82 down-regulation could be a critical step involved in the EGFR over-expression and the stronger tumorigenic activity triggered by EGFR mutations. Up-regulation of the CD82 level may become a promising new treatment strategy for lung adenocarcinoma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A subxiphoid surgical approach to thoracic cavity operations has potential advantages such as preventing injuries to intercostal nerves and vessels due to the bypass of the intercostal space during thoracic surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the feasibility and efficacy of the subxiphoid and standard transthoracic approaches for anatomic pulmonary lobectomy in a canine model. METHODS: Nineteen dogs were assigned for pulmonary lobectomy using either the subxiphoid (n = 10) or standard transthoracic approaches (n = 9). Each group underwent thoracic exploration and anatomic pulmonary lobectomy. Subxiphoid thoracoscopy was performed with a flexible bronchoscope via a 3-cm incision over the xiphoid process. In the conventional thoracoscopy group, approach to the thoracic cavity was obtained through a 3-cm incision over the seventh intercostal space. Physiological parameters (respiratory rate and body temperature) and blood samples (white blood cell counts and arterial blood gases) were collected during the preoperative and postoperative periods. Surgical outcomes data (operating time, operative complications, and body weight gain) were also collected and compared between the groups. The animals were sacrificed 14 d after surgery for necropsy evaluations. RESULTS: Anatomic pulmonary lobectomy was successfully performed without intraoperative and postoperative complications in all animals. There were no significant differences in the mean operating times or weight gain after surgery between the subxiphoid and the standard transthoracic approach groups. In terms of physiological and pulmonary parameters, there were no observed differences between the two surgical groups for respiratory rate, body temperature, white blood cell counts, and arterial blood gases at any time during the study. Necropsy confirmed the success of lobectomy without complication in all studied animals. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the subxiphoid approach was comparable with the standard transthoracic approach for anatomic pulmonary lobectomy, in terms of feasibility and effectiveness.

RESUMO

The transmission patterns of Thinopyrum elongatum chromosomes in the background of Triticum turgidum were investigated through cytogenetic and molecular marker analysis based on the F2 and F3 plants derived from a cross between Triticum trititrigia (AABBEE) and T. turgidum L. ssp. durum (AABB). An additional objective was to develop durum-Th. elongatum E chromosome addition lines. Among 218 F2 plants, individuals with 2n=28 accounted for 41.7%, those with 2n=29 accounted for 18.3%, and the remaining 40.0% had 2n=31-42. Molecular marker analysis of the F2 monosomic addition plants with 2n=29 showed significant differences in transmission rate among Th. elongatum chromosomes. Chromosome 1E had the highest transmission rates, while 3E and 6E had the lowest. Among F2 double monosomic addition plants with 2n=30, joint transmission was frequent between 1E, 4E, 7E and 5E; 6E was less frequent in joint transmission with other chromosomes, while 2E and 3E never transmitted along with other chromosomes. Among F3 plants derived from F2 monosomic addition plants, the transmission rates of E chromosomes varied widely, from the minimum of 9.1% for 6E to the maximum of 27.5% for 1E, consistent with observations from F2 plants. A full set of durum-Th. elongatum 1E-7E monosomic addition lines and several disomic addition lines were selected from F3 plants, and all monosomic addition plants were fertile. These chromosome E addition lines will be useful intermediate materials for developing substitution lines and translocation lines.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in patients with thymoma remains controversial. We sought to evaluate the perioperative and oncological outcomes after VATS resection for stage I and II thymoma and to compare the outcomes with those obtained after median sternotomy (MST). METHODS: Between 1991 and 2007, a total of 140 patients with stage I and II thymoma underwent surgery at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Of them, 58 underwent MST, 61 VATS, and 21 thoracotomy. Using a propensity score based on four variables (myasthenia gravis, tumor size on CT images, age, and Masaoka stage), 48 VATS-treated patients were matched to 48 patients who received MST. Outcomes compared included perioperative complications, length of stay, tumor recurrence, and survival. RESULTS: No operative deaths occurred in this study. VATS was associated with fewer intraoperative blood loss, and more patients in the VATS group were extubated in the operating room after surgery compared with the MST group (37.5 vs. 12.5 %, respectively, P = 0.005). The mean length of stay was shorter in the VATS group than in the MST group (5.8 vs. 7 days, respectively; P = 0.008). After a median follow-up of 53 months, five patients developed recurrent tumors (four pleural and one pericardial). No statistically significant differences were found in the 5-year survival rates between the two study groups. CONCLUSIONS: VATS appears feasible for patients with stage I and II thymoma and is associated with better perioperative outcomes than MST. The oncological outcomes are also similar.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between Chinese medical syndrome types and metabolomics of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. METHODS: Totally 120 NSCLC patients were assigned to asthenia syndrome group and sthenia syndrome group, 60 in each group. Meanwhile, 60 cases of benign pulmonary nodules in physical examinations were recruited as the control group. Tumor tissues or benign pulmonary nodules tissues were obtained by thoracoscope. Changes of their metabolites were observed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Their differences were studied using principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). ROC curve analysis was performed in different metabolic compounds of sthenia and asthenia syndromes groups. The area under the curve (AUC) was calculated to evaluate the sensitivity of diagnosing syndrome types. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, difference existed in 16 compounds. Of them , contents of citric acid, pyruvic acid, alanine, choline phosphate, glycerol phosphate choline, linoleic acid, oleic acid, lactic acid, inositol were more in the two tumors group than in the control group. Difference existed in 10 compounds between the sthenia syndrome group and the asthenia syndrome group. Of them, citric acid, pyruvic acid, alanine, choline phosphate, glycerol phosphate choline, lactic acid, and inositol were more in the asthenia syndrome group than in the sthenia syndrome group. Contents of valine, glucose, and glutamine were more in the sthenia syndrome group than in the asthenia syndrome group. ROC curve analyses of different compounds indicated that AUC of lactic acid and glucose was more than 0.8 (P < 0.01); AUC of inositol, choline phosphate, and glycerol phosphate choline was more than 0.7 (P < 0.01); AUC of valine, citric acid, glutamine, alanine, and pyruvic acid was more than 0.6 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There existed certain correlation between CM syndrome types and metabolomics of lung cancer. Lactic acid, glucose, inositol, choline phosphate, glycerol phosphate choline, valine, citric acid, glutamine, alanine, pyruvic acid were sensitive diagnostic compounds, and the first four kinds were most sensitive compounds.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To date there are no practical platforms for performing natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery in the thoracic cavity. This study evaluates the feasibility of transumbilical thoracosopy for lung biopsy and pericardial window creation. METHODS: Eleven dogs (6 in the nonsurvival group and 5 in the survival group) were used for this study. A homemade metallic tube was advanced into the abdominal cavity via a 12-mm umbilical incision. The metallic tube was advanced into the thoracic cavity through a subxyphoid diaphragmatic incision under video guidance. Access to the thoracic cavity was achieved by a flexible bronchoscope via the metallic tube. Surgical lung biopsy and pericardial window creation were performed using an electrocautery loop and needle knife. The animals were euthanized 20 minutes after the surgery was complete (nonsurvival group) or 14 days postsurgery (survival group) for necropsy evaluation. RESULTS: Eight pericardial window creations and 21 of 22 preplanned lung biopsies were completed in a median time of 72.18 minutes (range 50-105 minutes). One dog in the nonsurvival group died after tension pneumothorax due to postprocedure massive air leaks. In the survival group, the postoperative period was uneventful in all 5 dogs. Autopsies revealed no signs of vital organ injury and complete healing of the diaphragmatic incision occurred in all animals. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated that transumbilical thoracoscopic surgical lung biopsy and pericardial window creation is feasible. The safety and efficacy of the transumbilical approach need to be verified by a more detailed survival study.

RESUMO

Iodine, as one of the essential trace elements for human body, is very important for the proper function of thyroid gland. In some regions, people are still suffering from iodine deficiency disorder (IDD). How to provide an effective and cost-efficient iodine supplementation has been a public health issue for many countries. In this review, a novel iodine supplementation approach is introduced. Different from traditional iodine salt supplement, this approach innovatively uses cultivated iodine-rich phytogenic food as the supplement. These foods are cultivated using alga-based organic iodine fertilizer. The feasibility, mechanics of iodine absorption of plants from soil and the bioavailability of iodine-rich phytogenic food are further discussed.

RESUMO

To propose the new concept of multidimensional omics, and define that the multidimensional omics is a proper method for studying the material base and mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compounds. Zhuanggu Zhitong capsule was taken for example to study its effect against experimental postmenopausal osteoporosis. From the perspective of chemi-omics, genomics and proteomics of TCM, it systematically interpreted the efficacious materials and mechanisms of Zhuanggu Zhitong capsule in preventing and treating experimental postmenopausal osteoporosis, while taking the lead in designing a three dimensional form to intuitively exhibit the results of the multidimensional omics study. This study provides a new idea and solution for studies on the efficacious materials and mechanisms of TCM compounds.

RESUMO

The mitochondriaassociated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane (MAM), serving as a vital link between the mitochondria and ER, holds a pivotal role in maintaining the physiological function of these two organelles. Its specific functions encompass the participation in the biosynthesis and functional regulation of the mitochondria, calcium ion transport, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress and autophagy among numerous other facets. Scientific exploration has revealed that MAMs hold potential as effective therapeutic targets influencing the mitochondria and ER within the context of cancer therapy. The present review focused on elucidating the related pathways of mitochondrial autophagy and ER stress and their practical application in ovarian cancer, aiming to identify commonalities existing between MAMs and these pathways, thereby extending to related applications of MAMs in ovarian cancer treatment. This endeavor aimed at exploring new potential for MAMs in clinically managing ovarian cancer.
