Soil salinization is a critical environmental issue restricting agricultural production. Inner Mongolia is one of the areas with severe land salinization in China. This study aimed to investigate the effects of conditioning agent (containing marlstone and a range of enzymes) and cultivating Jerusalem artichoke on saline soils in Inner Mongolia. The effects of conditioner (0, 0.06 and 0.18 kg/m2) on soil physical, chemical and biological properties, including soil carbon fractions and microbiota in saline soils planted with Jerusalem artichoke, were characterized. The results showed that soil salinity was reduced significantly after cultivating Jerusalem artichoke and declined also after the conditioner addition. The application of conditioner increased the content of DOC (dissolved organic carbon), HFOC (heavy fraction organic carbon) and the content of aggregates >0.25 mm compared to the soil planted with Jerusalem artichoke alone. The relative abundance of halophilic bacteria such as Thioalkalivibrio and Thiohalobacter was greater in the CK (non-treated control). By contrast, the relative abundance of microorganisms with the carbon assimilation and nitrogen fixation capacities, such as Cyanobacteria and Rhodovulum, was greater in the conditioner-treated and Jerusalem artichoke-planted treatments. The planting of Jerusalem artichoke reduced soil salinity, increased soil organic carbon fractions, improved soil structure, and altered the soil microbial community, with the application of the conditioning agent enhancing these positive changes. The co-occurrence network structure of "Jerusalem artichoke-conditioner-saline soil-soil microorganism" was established, which provided scientific basis for Jerusalem artichoke-conditioner to improve saline soil.

BACKGROUND: The Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection-related diseases, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer are frequently asymptomatic until the onset of complications. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of H. pylori, erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcer, and precancerous lesions such as atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, gastric dysplasia, and upper gastrointestinal (GI) malignancy in asymptomatic Chinese. METHODS: From January to December 2017, a questionnaire was administered to consecutive asymptomatic patients undergoing routine physical examination, which included their first screening esophagogastroduodenoscopy. H. pylori infection was determined by one of positive 13 C urea breath tests or rapid urease test and histology. The presence of H. pylori infection, erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcer, precancerous gastric histology, and upper GI malignancy was analyzed in relation to demographic factors. RESULTS: A total of 1108 subjects (mean age: 48, range 21 to 79, 39.5% men) were included. The findings were: erosive esophagitis 7.8%, active H. pylori infection 44%, peptic ulcer 9.1% (duodenal 5.8%, gastric 2.5% or both 0.8%); 0.5% had gastric cancer. Male, smoking history, and current H. pylori infection were all significantly related to the presence of peptic ulcer. Totally, 1095 patients had gastric histopathology and premalignant gastric lesions were present in 67.4%; atrophic gastritis (67.4%), intestinal metaplasia (27.4%), and gastric dysplasia (0.5%). Age, current and previous H. pylori infection were risk factors significantly associated with precancerous lesions. CONCLUSIONS: Upper GI pathology as a sequelae of H. pylori infection is common in asymptomatic Chinese. These findings support institution of a nationwide test and treat program to eradicate H. pylori in China.

BACKGROUND: Dyspepsia is a common cause of physician visits. If and when endoscopy should be performed depend on the regions and the populations. This study aimed to identify the current risk factors predictive of upper gastrointestinal malignancy or peptic ulcer in China with high prevalence of gastric cancer. METHODS: A questionnaire was conducted among consecutive outpatients undergoing their first esophagogastroduodenoscopy for dyspepsia. Symptoms other than alarm symptoms in this study were defined as uncomplicated dyspepsia. RESULTS: 4310 outpatients (mean age 44, median 42, range 14-86) were included in the final analyses. Significant pathology was found in 13.8% (595/4310) patients including peptic ulcer (12.3%) and upper gastrointestinal malignancy (1.5%). Age, male sex and alarm symptoms were significantly associated with malignancy. The age cut-off identified for upper gastrointestinal malignancy was 56 years among patients with uncomplicated dyspepsia, which was similar to the combined cutoff of age and gender. CONCLUSIONS: Age should be considered as the primary predictor for upper gastrointestinal malignancy in Chinese patients with uncomplicated dyspepsia. 56 could probably be the optimal age to identify those lesions in this population. The rate of hyperglycaemia in people around the world is increasing at an alarming rate at present, and innovative methods of alleviating hyperglycaemia are needed. The effects of Jerusalem artichoke inulin on hyperglycaemia, liver-related genes and the intestinal microbiota in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and treated with streptozotocin (STZ) to induce hyperglycaemia were investigated. Inulin-treated hyperglycaemic mice had decreased average daily food consumption, body weight, average daily water consumption and relative liver weight and blood concentrations of TAG, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and fasting blood glucose. Liver-related gene expressions in hyperglycaemic (HFD-fed and STZ-treated) compared with control mice showed eighty-four differentially expressed genes (forty-nine up-regulated and thirty-five down-regulated). In contrast, hyperglycaemic mice treated with inulin had twenty-two differentially expressed genes compared with control ones. Using Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology, the rarefaction and the rank abundance curves as well as the α diversity indices showed the treatment-induced differences in bacterial diversity in intestine. The linear discriminant analysis of effect size showed that the inulin treatment improved intestinal microbiota; in particular, it significantly increased the number of Bacteroides in the intestine of mice. In conclusion, inulin is potentially an effective functional food for the prevention and/or treatment of hyperglycaemia.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection in China results in a substantial public health burden. Medical experts have not agreed on the best solution of population intervention for this problem. We presented a health economic evaluation of a population-based H pylori screen-and-treat strategy for preventing gastric cancer, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), and nonulcer dyspepsia (NUD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Decision trees and Markov models were developed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of H pylori screening followed by eradication treatment in asymptomatic Chinese. The modeled screen-and-treat strategy reduced the risk of gastric cancer, PUD, and NUD. The main outcomes were the costs, effectiveness, and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. Uncertainty was explored by one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: For preventing gastric cancer, PUD, and NUD together in a cohort of 10 million asymptomatic Chinese at the age of 20 years, the H pylori screen-and-treat strategy saved 288.1 million dollars, 28 989 life years, and 111 663 quality-adjusted life years, and prevented 11 611 gastric cancers, 5422 deaths from gastric cancer, and 1854 deaths from PUD during life expectancy. Uncertainty of screening age from 20 to 60 did not affect the superiority of the screen-and-treat strategy over the no-screen strategy. The one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of our study's results. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with the no-screen strategy, population-based screen-and-treat strategy for H pylori infection proved cheaper and more effective for preventing gastric cancer, PUD, and NUD in Chinese asymptomatic general population.

BACKGROUND: A reliably highly effective high-dose proton-pump inhibitor plus amoxicillin (dual Helicobacter pylori therapy) has remained elusive. We compared whether the addition of bismuth to high-dose dual therapy would improve the efficacy of high-dose dual therapy as first-line treatment. METHODS: This was an open-label, randomized single-center study of 160 treatment-naive patients with H. pylori infection who were randomly assigned to 14-day therapy with esomeprazole 40 mg twice a day plus amoxicillin 1 g three times a day with or without bismuth potassium citrate 600 mg (elemental bismuth 220 mg) twice a day. Antibiotic resistance was determined by agar dilution method and eradication by 13 C-urea breath test. RESULTS: The per-protocol eradication rates were 96.1%; 95% CI = 88.9%-99.2% (73/76) without bismuth vs 93.3%; 95% CI = 85.1%-97.8% (70/75) with bismuth (P = 0.494). The intention-to-treat eradication rates were 92.5%; 95% CI = 84.4%-97.2% (74/80) without bismuth and 88.8%; 95% CI = 79.7%-94.7% (71/80) with bismuth (P = 0.416). Resistance to amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, and levofloxacin was 0%, 31.7%, 81.4%, and 40.7%, respectively. Smoking reduced treatment effectiveness limited to those not receiving bismuth. The per-protocol eradication rates were 70% (7/10) vs 100% (66/66) in smokers vs non-smokers without bismuth (P = 0.002), and 100% (10/10) in smokers vs 92.3% (60/65) in non-smokers with bismuth (P = 1.0). The adverse event rates were 7.5% (6/80) without bismuth vs 11.3% (9/80) with bismuth (P = 0.416). CONCLUSIONS: Fourteen-day high-dose dual therapy was both effective and safe for first-line treatment in a region of high prevalence antibiotic resistance. Adding bismuth only improved treatment effectiveness among smokers.

This study was aimed at evaluating the physiological and metabolic responses of juvenile hybrid grouper â Epinephelus fuscoguttatus × â Epinephelus lanceolatus to stocking density. Hybrid grouper juveniles (mean ± SE = 25.43 ± 2.36 g live mass) were stocked for 22 weeks in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) under four different densities: low stocking density (LD; 1.03 kg m-3 ), medium stocking density (MD; 2.06 kg m-3 ), high stocking density (HD; 3.09 kg m-3 ) and extra-high stocking density (EHD; 4.11 kg m-3 ). Biometric variables were recorded and plasma, liver, intestine and stomach samples were taken for biochemical analysis at the end of the experimental period. Final stocking densities were 6.27, 16.04, 23.77 and 28.32 kg m-3 , respectively, with significant differences in growth performance. Our results showed that the best growth rates and feed utilisation occurred in the MD group. Higher plasma cortisol and glucose levels and lower triglyceride levels reflected the stress responses in the EHD group. Moreover, the activity of aspartate and alanine transaminases was elevated in the HD and EHD groups due to enhanced gluconeogenesis. The activity of the digestive enzyme pepsin significantly increased in the MD group. We found that 2.06-3.09 kg m-3 is the most suitable starting density for culturing juvenile hybrid grouper in recirculating aquaculture systems.

Phytophthora capsici Leonian causes destructive economical losses in pepper production, and a promising source of natural fungicides- Helianthus tuberosus leaves was reported. The antifungal activities of different extracts and compounds from H. tuberosus leaves against the phytopathogen, P. capsici Leonian, were examined by chemometric analysis, including HPLC-MS/MS and multivariate data analyses. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminate analysis were applied to examine the four groups of H. tuberosus leaves samples, including crude extracts obtained by different methods, including refluxing, macerating, and refluxing under vacuum; four fractions, namely, petroleum ether (PE), chloroform (Chl), ethyl acetate (EA), and n-butanol (NB) fractions; the samples of three H. tuberosus cultivars; and the samples at three growth stages of cultivar Nan Yu. The phenolics contents were categorized based on 3,5-Dicaffeoylquinic acid (3,5-DiCQA), 1,5-Dicaffeoylquinic acid (1,5-DiCQA), 3-O-Caffeoylquinic acid (3-CQA), and 4,5-Dicaffeoylquinic acid (4,5-DiCQA), which were predominant in all the samples. Antifungal activity assay revealed that Chl and NB fractions were more active against P. capsici Leonian with lower IC50(half of maximal inhibitory concentration) values, whereas partial least squares-discriminate analysis suggested caffeoylquinic acid isomer(4-CQA), methyl-quercetin glycoside(MQG), and caffeic acid(CA) might be the main active components in H. tuberosus leaves against P. capsici Leonian. Furthermore, microscopic evaluation demonstrated structural deformities in P. capsici Leonian treated with Chl and NB fractions, indicating the antifungal effects of H. tuberosus leaves. These results imply that H. tuberosus leaves with a high concentration of phenolics might be a promising source of natural fungicides.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication has become increasingly difficult especially for penicillin allergy patients. AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of adding bismuth or high-dose metronidazole to an H. pylori eradication regimen containing a proton-pump inhibitor, clarithromycin, and metronidazole in patients allergic to penicillin. METHODS: Pilot study in which penicillin-allergic, treatment-naive subjects were randomized (1:1) to 14-day esomeprazole (20 mg q12h), clarithromycin (500 mg q12h), and high dose of metronidazole (400 mg q6h) with (BECM group) or without (ECM group) bismuth (600 mg q12h). Eradication was confirmed by 13 C-urea breath test 6 weeks after therapy. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed by the agar dilution method. Adverse events were recorded. RESULTS: Sixty-six subjects were randomized, four were lost to follow-up and eight violated the protocol. The eradication rates were 63.6% (95% CI: 47.2%-80.0%) for ECM vs 84.8% (95% CI 72.6%-97.1%) (p = .049) for BECM by intention-to-treat, 67.7% (95% CI 51.3%-84.2%) vs 90.3% (95% CI 79.9%-100%) (p = .029) by modified ITT, and 70% (95% CI 53.6%-86.4%) vs 96% (95% CI 88.3%-100%) (P = .033) by per-protocol. Metronidazole, clarithromycin, and dual-resistant rates were 74.2%, 24.2%, and 18.2%, respectively. The cure rates were significantly improved by the addition of bismuth for both clarithromycin-resistant isolates (100% vs 25%, P = .024) and metronidazole-resistant isolates (94.7% vs 63.6%, P = .043). Adverse events were reported by 45.5% of subjects in ECM group and 48.5% in the BECM group (P = .805). CONCLUSIONS: This prospective trial demonstrated that while high-dose metronidazole could not completely overcome metronidazole resistance, bismuth was additive and improved the overall cure rates by 21%-26%.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of trehalose on the growth performance and nonspecific immunity of white shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei). The shrimps were randomly divided into four groups, i.e. control group fed with normal commercial diet and three treatment groups fed with trehalose-containing diets (0.5, 1 and 1.5â¯gâ¯kg-1) and experimental diets during a 12-week breeding experiment. Oral trehalose administration significantly improved the body weight; food efficiency; survival rate; phenoloxidase activity; superoxide dismutase activity; glutathione peroxidase level; total haemocyte count; hyaline, semigranular and granular cell numbers; and disease resistance against Vibrio alginolyticus relative to those of the control group (pâ¯<â¯0.05). However, a high level (1.5â¯gâ¯kg-1) of trehalose supplement did not further increase the efficiency compared with the moderate dose (1â¯gâ¯kg-1). Results indicated that trehalose exerted immunostimulatory effects on Pacific white shrimps (L. vannamei) and may be used as a diet supplement for the crustaceans.

Copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) are widely used in various industrial and commercial applications, but little is known about their potential hazard in the intestines of marine teleosts. In this study we investigated the effects of Cu-NPs and soluble Cu in the intestines of juvenile Epinephelus coioides. The fish were exposed in triplicate to control, 20 or 100 µg Cu L(-1) as either copper sulphate (CuSO4) or Cu-NPs for 25 days. With an increase in Cu-NPs or CuSO4 dose, the concentration of malonaldehyde in the intestines significantly increased, whereas the activities of total superoxide dismutase and catalase as well as glutathione concentration decreased compared to the control. Statistical analysis of an apoptosis index of intestinal cells showed that general dose-dependent apoptosis was induced by Cu-NPs or CuSO4, with Cu-NPs inducing the significantly higher apoptosis index than CuSOv. Caspase-3 and caspase-9 activities were increased with an increase in Cu-NPs or CuSO4 dose, more so in the Cu-NPs than CuSO4 treatment. With an increase in Cu-NPs or CuSOv dose, succinate dehydrogenase and Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity and cytochrome c concentration in mitochondria decreased, accompanied by increased cytochrome c concentration in the cytosol. Concentration of heat shock proteins 70 and 90 in the intestines and expression of corresponding genes were enhanced with an increase in the Cu-NPs or CuSOv dose, but the concentrations and expressions of immunoglobulin M and lysozyme decreased (more in the Cu-NPs than CuSO4 treatment) compared to the control. Expression of interleukin-1beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha showed a dose-dependent increase with the increased Cu-NPs or CuSO4 dose, with the highest expression found in the Cu-NPs treatment. In conclusion, Cu-NPs had similar toxic effects as CuSOv in the intestines of juvenile E. coioides, but toxicity of Cu-NPs was more severe than that of CuSO4.

Plant phenolics can have applications in pharmaceutical and other industries. To identify and quantify the phenolic compounds in Helianthus tuberosus leaves, qualitative analysis was performed by a reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and quantitative analysis by HPLC. Ten chlorogenic acids (CGAs) were identified (3-o-caffeoylquinic acid, two isomers of caffeoylquinic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaroyl-quinic acid, feruloylquinic acid, 3,4-dicaffeoyquinic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, 1,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid) by comparing their retention times, UV-Vis absorption spectra, and MS/MS spectra with standards. In addition, four other phenolic compounds, including caffeoyl glucopyranose, isorhamnetin glucoside, kaempferol glucuronide, and kaempferol-3-o-glucoside, were tentatively identified in Helianthus tuberosus leaves for the first time. The 3-o-caffeoylquinic acid (7.752 mg/g DW), 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (5.633 mg/g DW), and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (4.900 mg/g DW) were the major phenolic compounds in leaves of Helianthus tuberosus cultivar NanYu in maturity. The variations in phenolic concentrations and proportions in Helianthus tuberosus leaves were influenced by genotype and plant growth stage. Cultivar NanYu had the highest concentration of phenolic compounds, in particular 3-o-caffeoylquinic acid and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid compared with the other genotypes (wild accession and QingYu). Considering various growth stages, the concentration of total phenolics in cultivar NanYu was higher at flowering stage (5.270 mg/g DW) than at budding and tuber swelling stages. Cultivar NanYu of Helianthus tuberosus is a potential source of natural phenolics that may play an important role in the development of pharmaceuticals.

In order to investigate the mechanisms in two Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) genotypes that hyperaccumulate Cd, a sand-culture experiment was carried out to characterize fractionation of Cd in tissue of Cd-hyperaccumulating genotypes NY2 and NY5. The sequential extractants were: 80% v/v ethanol (FE), deionized water (FW), 1 M NaCl (FNaCl), 2% v/v acetic acid (FAcet), and 0.6 M HCl (FHCl). After 20 days of treatments, NY5 had greater plant biomass and greater Cd accumulation in tissues than NY2. In both genotypes the FNaCl fraction was the highest in roots and stems, whereas the FAcet and FHCl fractions were the highest in leaves. With an increase in Cd concentration in the culture solution, the content of every Cd fraction also increased. The FW and FNaCl ratios in roots were lower in NY5 than in NY2, while the amount of other Cd forms was higher. It implied that, in high accumulator, namely, NY5, the complex of insoluble phosphate tends to be shaped more easily which was much better for Cd accumulation. Besides, translocation from plasma to vacuole after combination with protein may be one of the main mechanisms in Cd-accumulator Jerusalem artichoke genotypes.

Melia azedarach demonstrates strong salt tolerance and thrives in harsh saline soil conditions, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed gene expression under low, medium, and high salinity conditions to gain a deeper understanding of adaptation mechanisms of M. azedarach under salt stress. The GO (gene ontology) analysis unveiled a prominent trend: as salt stress intensified, a greater number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) became enriched in categories related to metabolic processes, catalytic activities, and membrane components. Through the analysis of the category GO:0009651 (response to salt stress), we identified four key candidate genes (CBL7, SAPK10, EDL3, and AKT1) that play a pivotal role in salt stress responses. Furthermore, the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway enrichment analysis revealed that DEGs were significantly enriched in the plant hormone signaling pathways and starch and sucrose metabolism under both medium and high salt exposure in comparison to low salt conditions. Notably, genes involved in JAZ and MYC2 in the jasmonic acid (JA) metabolic pathway were markedly upregulated in response to high salt stress. This study offers valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying M. azedarach salt tolerance and identifies potential candidate genes for enhancing salt tolerance in M. azedarach.

The highly conserved miR396 plays a pivotal role in the growth, development, and responses to abiotic and biotic stresses in plants. However, research on miR396 and its targets in Jerusalem artichoke remains largely unexplored. In this study, we employed bioinformatics and experimental techniques, such as cloning and qRT-PCR, to investigate the regulatory role of miR396 on its targets, leveraging our lab's transcriptomic and degradomic data of Jerusalem artichoke. Specifically, we initially cloned and characterized the precursors (htu-MIR396a/b/c) and mature sequences (htu-miR396a/b/c) of three miR396 isoforms. Subsequently, we identified nine target genes, including seven Growth-Regulating Factors (GRFs) (HtGRF3/4/6/9/10/12/13), one WRKY transcription factor (HtWRKY40), and one Scarecrow-like (SCL) transcription factor (HtSCL33). Finally, we conducted an analysis of their expression patterns across various tissues and their responses to temperature stress. Notably, htu-MIR396s exhibited high expression in seedling stems, while htu-miR396s predominantly expressed in seedling leaves. Moreover, HtWRKY40 and HtSCL33 displayed higher expression levels than HtGRFs in most tissues, except leaves. Remarkably, HtGRF4/6/10/12/13 exhibited higher expression in leaves than in roots and stems during seedling growth. Furthermore, during tuber development, HtGRF4/6/10, HtWRKY40, and HtSCL33 were highly expressed, while HtGRF3/9/12/13 showed relatively lower expression levels. Under heat stress (42â), htu-MIR396 expression was up-regulated, and htu-miR396 showed dynamic expression patterns in seedlings, resulting in the induction of HtGRF4/6/10/12/13 in leaves and HtSCL33 in roots, while HtWRKY40 in leaves was repressed. Conversely, under cold stress (4â), htu-MIR396s showed fluctuating expression levels, and htu-miR396s were up-regulated in seedlings. Notably, HtGRF4/13 and HtSCL33 in seedlings were reduced, whereas HtGRF6 in roots and HtWRKY40 in leaves were enhanced. These findings offer valuable insights into the functional roles of miR396-target interactions under abiotic stress in Jerusalem artichoke.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are essential for plant growth, development, and stress adaptation. However, their roles in Jerusalem artichoke are largely unexplored. Using bioinformatics, we classified 143 HSP genes into distinct families: HSP40 (82 genes), HSP60 (22 genes), HSP70 (29 genes), HSP90 (6 genes), and HSP100 (4 genes). Our analysis covered their traits, evolution, and structures. Using RNA-seq data, we uncovered unique expression patterns of these HSP genes across growth stages and tissues. Notably, HSP40, HSP60, HSP70, HSP90, and HSP100 families each had specific roles. We also studied how these gene families responded to various stresses, from extreme temperatures to drought and salinity, revealing intricate expression dynamics. Remarkably, HSP40 showed remarkable flexibility, while HSP60, HSP70, HSP90, and HSP100 responded specifically to stress types. Moreover, our analysis unveiled significant correlations between gene pairs under stress, implying cooperative interactions. qRT-PCR validation underscored the significance of particular genes such as HtHSP60-7, HtHSP90-5, HtHSP100-2, and HtHSP100-3 in responding to stress. In summary, our study advances the understanding of how HSP gene families collectively manage stresses in Jerusalem artichoke. This provides insights into specific gene functions and broader plant stress responses.

Aerobic composting is one of the most economical ways to produce organic fertilizer from agricultural wastes. In this research, we independently developed a simple composting simulation reactor. The effects of biochar pyrolysised at different pyrolysis temperatures (B1-450 °C; B2-550 °C; and B3-650 °C) on nitrogen conversion (Total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3 --N), cumulative amount of ammonia (CEA) and nitrous oxide (CEN) emission, nitrogen loss rate (NLR), etc.) and functional microbial community (cbbL, cbbM and nifH) structure in the composting system were studied. Results showed that the addition of biochar significantly improved the efficiency of composting, increased the NO3 --N concentration and reduced the NLR (%) in the composting system (B3 (31.4 ± 2.73)

Introduction: In coastal saline lands, organic matter is scarce and saline stress is high. Exploring the promotion effect of intervention with organic acid from biological materials on soil improvement and thus forage output and determining the related mechanism are beneficial to the potential cultivation and resourceful, high-value utilization of coastal mudflats as back-up arable land. Method: Three exogenous organic acids [humic acid (H), fulvic acid (F), and citric acid (C)] were combined with four kinds of biomass materials [cottonseed hull (CH), cow manure (CM), grass charcoal (GC), and pine needle (PN)] and applied to about 0.3% of medium-salt mudflat soil. The salinity and nutrient dynamics of the soil and the growth and physiological differences of sweet sorghum at the seedling, elongation, and heading stages were observed under different treatments to screen for efficient combinations and analyze the intrinsic causes and influencing mechanisms. Results: The soil salinity, nutrient dynamics, and forage grass biological yield during sweet sorghum cultivation in saline soils differed significantly (p < 0.05) depending on the type of organic acid-biomass composite applied. Citric acid-pine needle composite substantially reduced the soil salinity and increased the soil nutrient content at the seedling stage and improved the root vigor and photosynthesis of sweet sorghum by increasing its stress tolerance, allowing plant morphological restructuring for a high biological yield. The improvement effect of fulvic acid-pine needle or fulvic acid-cow manure composite was manifested at the elongation and heading stages. Discussion: Citric acid-pine needle composite promoted the growth of saline sweet sorghum seedlings, and the effect of fulvic acid-pine needle composite lasted until the middle and late stages.

Even though Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) has strong resistance to abiotic stresses, salinity can still reduce the biomass of Jerusalem artichoke. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the differences in the development of Jerusalem artichoke and the dynamics of sugar throughout the growth period under high (7.23-8.15 g/kg) and low (3.20-4.32 g/kg) salinity stress in the field in Jiangsu Province, China. This study confirmed that high salinity promoted the conversion of reducing sugars to non-reducing sugars (fructans) in Jerusalem artichoke tubers, but significantly reduced the biomass of Jerusalem artichoke and advanced the peak time of the dry matter accumulation of aerial parts. In addition, in the early and late stages of tuberization, the total sugar content of tubers under low salinity conditions (786 ± 8 mg/g and 491 ± 8 mg/g) was 93.3% and 1.15 times than those under high salinity conditions, respectively. Moreover, the total sugar content in stems was consistently greater under high than low salinity conditions in the same period. The accumulation rate and the amount of dry matter were significantly higher in stems than in other tissues. Therefore, the aerial parts of "Nanyu No. 1" could be harvested before mid-to-early October, and the tubers after mid-November. This study revealed the internal reasons for the decreased yield of Jerusalem artichoke under salt stress, and provided theoretical basis and guidance for the cultivation and utilization of Jerusalem artichoke in saline-alkali soil.

Among different mechanisms of salt resistance, regulation of ion distribution among various tissues and intracellular compartmentation are of great importance. In this study, we investigated the effects of salt stress on growth, photosynthesis, and Na(+) accumulation and distribution in leaf apoplast and symplast of two canola (Brassica napus L.) cultivars (NYY 1 and BZY 1). The results showed that the declines in shoot dry mass, leaf water potential and net photosynthetic rate of BZY 1 (salt sensitive) were higher than those of NYY 1 (salt resistant) in response to salt stress. Stomatal limitation to photosynthesis was mainly affected under moderate salinity, whereas the reduction in assimilation rate under severe salt stress was due to both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations. We also found that more Na(+) was distributed to leaf veins in NYY 1 than in BZY 1; simultaneously, less Na(+) accumulated in the leaf blade in NYY 1 than in BZY 1. The percentage of Na(+) in the leaf symplast in NYY 1 was markedly lower than that in BZY 1. Also, Na(+) diffusion in leaves through apoplastic and symplastic pathways of BZY 1 was stronger than that in NYY 1, and the transpiration rate in BZY 1, especially at the leaf edges, decreased more than in NYY 1. Our results showed that NYY 1 accumulated less Na(+) in the shoot, especially in leaf blades, and confined Na(+) to the apoplast to avoid leaf salt toxicity, which could be one reason for the higher resistance of NYY 1 than BZY 1 plants to salt stress.
