RESUMO

Depression is a psychiatric disorder increasingly diffused worldwide. Evidence suggests that irisin, a myokine secreted by contracting muscle, mediates beneficial effects on several targets, including the brain. Here, the potential antidepressant properties of long-term intermittent systemic irisin administration (100 µg/kg/weekly for 1 month) were evaluated in mice by the Tail Suspension Test (TST), Forced Swim Test (FST), and Open Field Test (OFT). Furthermore, to deepen the molecular pathways underlying irisin treatment, the expression of irisin precursor, neurotrophic/growth factors, and cytokines was analyzed. Irisin treatment significantly decreased the immobility time in the TST and FST, suggesting an antidepressant effect. Additionally, irisin seemed to display an anxiolytic-like effect increasing the time spent in the OFT arena center. These findings were probably due to the modulation of endogenous brain factors as the gene expression of some neurotrophins, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), was upregulated only in irisin-treated mouse brain. Moreover, irisin modulated the expression of some cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, and IL-10). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating that the irisin antidepressant effect may be observed even with a systemic administration in mice. This could pave the way toward intriguing preclinical research in humans.

The myokine Irisin, produced during physical exercise, has an anabolic effect on bone, both in vitro and in vivo. Very recently, using a controlled in vitro 3D cell model to mimic the bone microenvironment aboard the International Space Station, it has been shown that Irisin treatment in microgravity prevents the down-regulation of the transcription factors Atf4, Runx2 and Osterix, as well as Collagen I and Osteoprotegerin proteins, crucial for osteoblast differentiation in physiologic conditions. Irisin action has also been investigated in human subjects, in which it correlates with bone health status, supporting its physiological importance also in human bone, both in healthy subjects and in patients suffering from diseases related to bone metabolism, such as hyperparathyroidism and type 1 diabetes. Low levels of circulating Irisin have been found in post-menopausal women affected by hyperparathyroidism. Furthermore, Irisin is positively correlated with bone strength in athletes and bone mineral density in football players. Moreover, in healthy children, Irisin is positively associated with bone mineral status and in children with type 1 diabetes, Irisin is positively correlated with improved glycemic control and skeletal health. In this review, we will focus on recent findings about Irisin action on microgravity induced bone loss and on osteocyte activity and survival through its αV/ß5 integrin receptor.

The emergence of the novel coronavirus and the pandemic resulting from its spread have led to significant negative impacts on health, economy, relationships, and others. Particularly in the field of hospital care, the need for a greater number of patients has led to a breakdown of the system. Gastrointestinal manifestations are common in SARS-COV 2 patients, while 10% of those who are sick exhibit symptoms only from gastrointestinal without any manifestation on the part of the respiratory tract. The main manifestations are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and anorexia. It is also interesting to note that biochemical liver disorder is a frequent finding and is associated with a worse prognosis and higher probability admission to intensive care. It was also observed that RNA from the virus was found in the stool several days after the tests came back negative pulmonary secretions, while rectal swab virus detection methods were used with a lower but comparable sensitivity to that of nasal swabs. Gastrointestinal symptoms in SARS-COV 2 infection are common and their search should be part of the initial diagnosis approach and have a connection with the gut microbiota dysbiosis and this can lead to an alteration of the gut/liver axis.

Superantigens, i.e., staphylococcal enterotoxins and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1, interact with T cells in a different manner in comparison to conventional antigens. In fact, they activate a larger contingent of T lymphocytes, binding outside the peptide-binding groove of the major histocompatibility complex class II. Involvement of many T cells by superantigens leads to a massive release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1, IL-2, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-gamma. Such a storm of mediators has been shown to account for tissue damage, multiorgan failure and shock. Besides conventional drugs and biotherapeutics, experiments with natural and biological products have been undertaken to attenuate the toxic effects exerted by superantigens. In this review, emphasis will be placed on polyphenols, probiotics, beta-glucans and antimicrobial peptides. In fact, these substances share a common functional denominator, since they skew the immune response toward an anti-inflammatory profile, thus mitigating the cytokine wave evoked by superantigens. However, clinical applications of these products are still scarce, and more trials are needed to validate their usefulness in humans.

The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the concentration of N-terminal type I collagen extension pro-peptide (PINP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAcP), and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) in saliva during orthodontic treatment in order to evaluate whether changes in bone turnover marker (BTM) concentration can help highlight the effects of orthodontic mechanical loading in the absence of clinical evidence of tooth movement in terms of tooth movement. Saliva samples from 25 apparently healthy young subjects (10 females and 15 males) were collected using Salivette® (Sarstedt) with cotton swabs and the concentrations of PTHrP, TRAcP 5b, and PINP were analyzed at time 0 (T1), 25 days (T2), and at 45 days (T3). Differences in the median value of biomarker levels between baseline T1 and follow-up of the different groups (T2 and T3) were assessed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test. Trough concentrations of P1NP, PTHrP, and TRAcP were 0.80 µg/L, 0.21 ng/mL, and 0.90 U/L above the method LOD. The non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test confirmed a statistically significant difference in T1 versus concentrations of T2 and T3. All subjects evaluated had a statistically significant difference between T1 vs. T3. when compared with the specific critical difference (RCV) for the analyte The results obtained demonstrate that the evaluation of BTM changes in saliva can help the evaluation of orthodontic procedures and the monitoring of biomechanical therapy.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the concentrations of some bone turnover markers in preterm neonates with uncomplicated clinical course in the first month of life. Samples from 13 preterm neonates were collected at three different times: at birth (T0) from umbilical cord blood (UCB); and at 15 (T1) and 30 (T2) days of life from peripheral blood (PB). The concentrations of calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), total alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Collagen Type 1 Amino-terminal Propeptide (PINP), osteocalcin (OC), Collagen Type 1 Carboxyl-Terminal Telopeptide (CTX) and Leptin were assessed. A statistically significant difference for ALP concentration at birth versus T1 and T2 was found. An evident increase in the median concentrations of CTX, OC and PINP from T0 to T2 were observed. A significant difference was also found for Leptin concentration at T0 compared to T1. In preterm infants, in the absence of acute or chronic medical conditions and without risk factors for metabolic bone disease (MBD) of prematurity, there is a significant increase in bone turnover markers during the first month of life. The knowledge of the variations in these markers in the first weeks of life, integrated by the variations in the biochemical indicators of bone metabolism, could help in recognizing any conditions at risk of developing bone diseases.

AIM OF THE STUDY: We evaluated and compared blood gas analysis (EGA) non-conformities (NC) considered operator-dependent performed in Point-Of-Care (POC) analyzer as quality indicators (IQ) of the pre-analytical phase. To this end, four different NC registered in the resuscitation departments of the Hospital Polyclinic Bari from the beginning of the pandemic (March 2020) until February 2022 were evaluated. The results obtained were compared with those recorded in the pre-COVID period (March 2018-February 2020) to check if there were differences in number and type. MATERIAL AND METHODS: GEM 4000 series blood gas analyzers (Instrumentation Laboratory, Bedford, MA, United States) are installed with integrated Intelligent Quality Management (iQM®), which automatically identify and log pre-analytical errors. All blood gas analyzers are connected to the company intranet and interfaced with the GEM Web Plus (Werfen Instrumentation Laboratory, Bedford, MA, United States) data management information system, which allows the core laboratory to remotely supervise all decentralized POC stations. The operator-dependent process NC were expressed in terms of absolute and relative proportions (percentiles and percentage changes). For performance evaluation, the Mann-Whitney U test, Chi-squared test and Six-Sigma Metric calculation for performance classification were performed. RESULTS: In the COVID period, 31,364 blood gas tests were performed vs. 16,632 tests in the pre-COVID period. The NC related to the suitability of the EGA sample and manageable by the operators were totals of 652 (3.9%) and 749 (2.4%), respectively, in the pre-COVID and COVID periods. The pre-analytical phase IQs used did not show statistically significant differences in the two periods evaluated. The Sigma evaluation did not show an increase in error rates. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the increase in the number of EGAs performed in the two periods, the training procedures performed by the core laboratory staff were effective; the clinical users of the POC complied with the indications and procedures shared with the core laboratory without increasing the operator-dependent NCs. Furthermore, the core laboratory developed monitoring activities capable of guaranteeing the maintenance of the pre-analytical quality.

This article is intended to deepen our knowledge to date regarding the functions of the resident microbiota/microbiome in the urinary system for human health and disease. First, we sought to report the general characteristics (composition and stability) of the normal urinary system microbiota in the different anatomical sites in relation to some factors such as the effect of age, gender and diet, analyzing in detail the functions and the composition of the microbiota in the light of current knowledge. Several pieces of evidence suggest the importance of preserving the micro-ecosystem of the urinary system, and in some cases their relationship with diseases is important for maintaining human health is well understood. The female and male reproductive microbiota have mainly been studied over the past decade. In the past, the arrest was thought to have taken place in a sterile environment. Microorganisms of the microbiota form biofilms, three-dimensional structures, that differ in the reproductive organs and interact with both gametes and the embryo as well as with maternal tissues. These biofilms from the reproductive system also interact with others, such as that of the gastrointestinal tract. Reduction in its diversity intestinal microbiota can disrupt estrogen metabolism and affect the reproductive microbiota. It is therefore understood that its quantitative and qualitative identification is important for microbiota, but also the study of the structures formed by the microorganisms. A dysbiosis with local or systemic causes can lead to serious diseases. The role of probiotics in maintaining microbial population harmony (eubiosis) and preventing certain pathologies of the urinary and reproductive system was also investigated. A negative variation in the qualitative and quantitative composition of certain strains of microorganisms (dysbiosis) due to local or systemic causes can even lead to serious diseases. The role of probiotics in maintaining the healthy balance of microorganism populations (eubiosis), and thus in the prevention of certain pathologies of the urinary and reproductive system, has also been studied.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to relate IL-6 and IL-1ß serum levels with the severity of olfactory disorders and with the type of unperceived odors. METHODS: 82 inpatients (45 men aged 62.3 ± 14.2 and 37 women aged 57.1 ± 12.8) with only smell dysfunctions were divided into two groups. The evaluation of the smell disorder was carried out with a questionnaire to define which sensitivity is most compromised in COVID-19 patients. Cytokine levels were measured with chemiluminescence and ELISA assay. Statistical analyses were performed with the Wilcoxon Rank test, Welch's T-test, and Mann-Whitney test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in IL-6 and IL-1 ß levels were found in moderate disease patients when there was an impairment of trigeminal sensitivity (p <0.05) and trigeminal and olfactory sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained showed that in COVID-19 patients the impairment of trigeminal sensitivity in association with olfactory sensitivity was more prevalent in moderate than in mild forms.

A large percentage of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients have taste dysfunction. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels in mild and moderate COVID-19 patients with the type (quantitative or qualitative) of taste disorders were compared in this observational study. The 208 COVID-19 patients (118 men and 90 women) revealing only taste dysfunctions as prodromic symptoms were classified as mild and moderate patients. Survey results were used to evaluate the taste disorder. The IL-6 levels were measured using a chemiluminescence assay. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon rank, Welch's, and Mann-Whitney tests. The findings revealed that neither the presence of dysgeusia or phantogeusia nor the perception of sour and salty, differed statistically significantly between moderate and mild patients (P > 0.05). But between moderate and mild patients, there were statistically significant differences in how umami, bitter, sweet, and parageusia were perceived (P < 0.05). There was an impairment of multiple tastes up to ageusia in patients with high IL-6 levels. The findings demonstrated that parageusia and dysfunctions in umami, bitter, and sweet taste perception can be indicators of more severe forms of COVID-19.

The human intestine is colonized by a huge number of microorganisms from the moment of birth. This set of microorganisms found throughout the human body, is called the microbiota; the microbiome indicates the totality of genes that the microbiota can express, i.e., its genetic heritage. Thus, microbiota participates in and influences the proper functioning of the organism. The microbiota is unique for each person; it differs in the types of microorganisms it contains, the number of each microorganism, and the ratio between them, but mainly it changes over time and under the influence of many factors. Therefore, the correct functioning of the human body depends not only on the expression of its genes but also on the expression of the genes of the microorganisms it coexists with. This fact makes clear the enormous interest of community science in studying the relationship of the human microbiota with human health and the incidence of disease. The microbiota is like a unique personalized "mold" for each person; it differs quantitatively and qualitatively for the microorganisms it contains together with the relationship between them, and it changes over time and under the influence of many factors. We are attempting to modulate the microbial components in the human intestinal microbiota over time to provide positive feedback on the health of the host, from intestinal diseases to cancer. These interventions to modulate the intestinal microbiota as well as to identify the relative microbiome (genetic analysis) can range from dietary (with adjuvant prebiotics or probiotics) to fecal transplantation. This article researches the recent advances in these strategies by exploring their advantages and limitations. Furthermore, we aim to understand the relationship between intestinal dysbiosis and pathologies, through the research of resident microbiota, that would allow the personalization of the therapeutic antibiotic strategy.

BACKGROUND: Risky alcohol consumption can occur from a young age and affects people of all age groups, sometimes requiring the intervention of the emergency medical services. OBJECTIVES: Determining the timing and characteristics of emergency calls (to the "118" emergency number) relating to subjects in all age groups, in which alcohol was a contributing factor, along with the biochemical correlates, in a great metropolitan area. On the basis of these, future interventions would target specific training for nurses and paramedics working in emergency medical services. METHOD: An observational single-centre retrospective study carried out from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2018 involving patients requiring emergency care and attending the Emergency Department of an University Hospital. RESULTS: Out of a total of 47,252 emergency calls, 2.22% were for alcohol-related conditions and mainly involved male patients (78.4%). A high incidence of alcoholic coma was found in patients aged 11 to 17 years. Emergency medical assistance was required mainly at night on weekdays by patients aged 11-17, 25-44 years and during the weekend and on weekdays by patients aged 18-24 years. A blood alcohol concentration higher than 50 mg/dL was found in more than 67% of patients aged 11-17 and 18-24 years at weekends. CONCLUSIONS: The most alarming finding from our data is that, despite prevention policies, young people requiring emergency medical assistance showed similar alcohol levels as adults and a high incidence of alcoholic coma.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 remains a significant issue for global health, the economy, and society. When SARS-CoV-2 began to spread, the most recent serious infectious disease of this century around the world, with its high morbidity and mortality rates, it is understandable why such infections have generally been spread in the past, mainly from international travel movements. This perspective review aimed to provide an update for clinicians on the recent developments related to the microbiological perspectives in pandemics, diagnostics, prevention (such as the spread of a virus), vaccination campaigns, treatment options, and health consequences for COVID-19 based on the current literature. In this way, the authors attempt to raise awareness on the transversal nature of these challenges by identifying the main risk/vulnerability factors that the scientific community must face including our current knowledge on the virus capacity of the mechanism of entry into the cells, the current classifications of viral variants, the knowledge of the mathematical model on the spread of viruses (the possible routes of transmission), and the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns in a global context of pandemic, particularly from COVID-19, with a look at new or future vaccines.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a genetic disorder characterized by an impairment of steroid synthesis due to an altered production of 21-hydroxylase enzyme. Corticoid hormones are involved in the development and functioning of many organs. The aim of the present study was to review the international literature to collect data regarding oral manifestations of CAH. A review of the literature describing oral features of patients affected by CAH was performed using electronic databases (PubMed and Scopus). The data about number of patients, form of CAH, and oral findings were extracted and analyzed. Seven studies were included in the final analysis. The principal findings reported regarded an advanced dental development observed in patients with CAH. One paper reported amelogenesis imperfecta and periodontal issues. The dentist could be the first specialist involved in the CAH syndrome diagnosis, identifying the characteristic features described above, especially for the classical simple virilizing and non-classical form.

Background: The measurement of Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) may be useful in the diagnosis and management of abnormal phosphate metabolism in both patients with preserved renal function or with chronic kidney disease (CKD). FGF-23 tests differ considerably by molecule assayed (iFGF23 or cFGF23), analytical performance and reference ranges. We establish iFGF23 Upper Reference Limits (URL) in apparently healthy pediatric individuals using automated immunochemiluminescent assay. Methods: We measured the levels of plasma iFGF23 from 115 samples from apparently healthy pediatric subjects [59 (51.3%) individuals were male; median age 10 years (range 1-18)] included in an observational study conducted at Policlinico University Hospital of Bari. The method used for the iFGF23 assay was immunochemiluminescent sandwich assay developed by DiaSorin on the Liaison XL platform. Statistical calculation of 95% reference interval, right-sided (CLSI C28-A3) and verification of age and sex covariables was performed for the calculation of the URL. Results: The URL concentration of iFGF23 was 61.21 pg/mL (58.63 to 63.71, 90% CI). No significant differences were found between the median concentrations of iFGF23 differentiated by sex and age. Conclusions: The dosage of iFGF23 is important both for the differential diagnosis of the various forms of rickets, and for the subsequent monitoring of the effectiveness of drug treatment. We have established the URL for the iFGF23 Liaison test in apparently healthy pediatric subjects. The availability of iFGF23 pediatric reference values will allow a better clinical use of the test.

Parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) is expressed at a wide range of sites in the body and performs different functions including vasodilation, relaxation of smooth muscle cells, and regulation of bone development. PTHrP also mediates hypercalcemia related to neoplastic diseases. However, reference ranges specific method and age were not evaluated. We establish PTHrP reference ranges in apparently healthy, normocalcemic, normophosphatemic pediatric individuals. In this observational prospective, study we measured PTHrP in serum from 178 samples (55.06% male 44.94% female) from apparently healthy pediatric subjects [median age 10 years (range 1-18)] subunit ELISA method The statistical analysis performed provided for the calculation of the 95% reference interval, right-sided, with a non-parametric percentile method (CLSI C28-A3). Upper reference limits (URL) for PTHrP was 2.89 ng/mL (2.60 to 3.18; 90% CI). No significant differences were found between the median PTHrP concentrations in males vs females and in the age range categories selected. Comprehensive normal values for PTHrP are indispensable to the assessment of calcium phosphorus dysfunction in children. Severe hypercalcemia is a rare, but clinically significant condition, in infancy and childhood. PTHrP values higher than the reference value may help to distinguish the hypercalcemic product of a malignancy, paraneoplastic syndromes mediated by PTHrP, from other causes.

Background: Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) indicates a group of inherited polyneuropathies whose clinical phenotypes primarily include progressive distal weakness and muscle atrophy. Compelling evidence showed that the exercise-mimetic myokine irisin protects against muscle wasting in an autocrine manner, thus possibly preventing the onset of musculoskeletal atrophy. Therefore, we sought to determine if irisin serum levels correlate with biochemical and muscle parameters in a cohort of CMT patients. Methods: This cohort study included individuals (N=20) diagnosed with CMT disease. Irisin and biochemical markers were quantified in sera. Skeletal muscle mass (SMM) was evaluated by bioelectric impedance analysis, muscle strength by handgrip, and muscle quality was derived from muscle strength and muscle mass ratio. Results: CMT patients (m/f, 12/8) had lower irisin levels than age and sex matched healthy subjects (N=20) (6.51 ± 2.26 vs 9.34 ± 3.23 µg/ml; p=0.003). SMM in CMT patients was always lower compared to SMM reference values reported in healthy Caucasian population matched for age and sex. Almost the totality of CMT patients (19/20) showed low muscle quality and therefore patients were evaluated on the basis of muscle strength. Irisin was lower in presence of pathological compared to normal muscle strength (5.56 ± 1.26 vs 7.67 ± 2.72 µg/ml; p=0.03), and directly correlated with the marker of bone formation P1PN (r= 0.669; 95%CI 0.295 to 0.865; p=0.002), but inversely correlated with Vitamin D (r=-0.526; 95%CI -0,791 to -0,095; p=0.017). Surprisingly, in women, irisin levels were higher than in men (7.31 ± 2.53 vs 5.31 ± 1.02 µg/ml, p=0.05), and correlated with both muscle strength (r=0.759; 95%CI 0.329 to 0.929; p=0.004) and muscle quality (r=0.797; 95%CI 0.337 to 0.950; p=0.006). Conclusion: Our data demonstrate lower irisin levels in CMT patients compared to healthy subjects. Moreover, among patients, we observed, significantly higher irisin levels in women than in men, despite the higher SMM in the latter. Future studies are necessary to establish whether, in this clinical contest, irisin could represent a marker of the loss of muscle mass and strength and/or bone loss.

In humans, coronaviruses can cause infections of the respiratory system, with damage of varying severity depending on the virus examined: ranging from mild-to-moderate upper respiratory tract diseases, such as the common cold, pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. Human coronaviruses known to date, common throughout the world, are seven. The most common-and least harmful-ones were discovered in the 1960s and cause a common cold. Others, more dangerous, identified in the early 2000s and cause more severe respiratory tract infections. Among these the SARS-CoV, isolated in 2003 and responsible for the severe acute respiratory syndrome (the so-called SARS), which appeared in China in November 2002, the coronavirus 2012 (2012-nCoV) cause of the Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (MERS) from coronavirus, which exploded in June 2012 in Saudi Arabia, and actually SARS-CoV-2. On December 31, 2019, a new coronavirus strain was reported in Wuhan, China, identified as a new coronavirus beta strain ß-CoV from group 2B, with a genetic similarity of approximately 70% to SARS-CoV, the virus responsible of SARS. In the first half of February, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), in charge of the designation and naming of the viruses (i.e., species, genus, family, etc.), thus definitively named the new coronavirus as SARS-CoV-2. This article highlights the main knowledge we have about the biomolecular and pathophysiologic mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: Elevated human epididymis secretory protein 4 (HE4) serum levels have been widely investigated in patients with ovarian cancer. However, high levels of HE4 can be also found in other tumors and in renal fibrosis. To date, the HE4 assay manufacturer features the reference value only for the female pre- and post-menopausal population. The aim of this study was to determine the upper reference limit (URL) of HE4 in a well-defined and large cohort of healthy male individuals and investigate potential factors influencing HE4 levels in healthy subjects. METHODS: The study included 307 Italian healthy male individuals. HE4 was measured using a chemiluminescent assay (Abbott Laboratories, Wiesbaden, Germany). The URL was calculated using the non-parametric percentile method. Differences in HE4 concentrations according to age, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), free and bioavailable testosterone were also evaluated. RESULTS: The 97.5th percentile URL of serum HE4 in our study population was 57 pmol/L (90% CI). After stratifying subjects according to age, we found that the URL of HE4 was higher in older (> 50 years) than in younger subjects (18-30 years old), and overlapping with the URL in males from 31 to 50 years old (P=4.769e-16, r=0.44). A strong negative correlation between HE4 and eGFR was observed (P=8.412e-12, r=-0.38). Moreover, a statistically significant negative correlation was also found between HE4 and free and bioavailable testosterone. CONCLUSION: This study determined the URL of HE4 in a large cohort of healthy male subjects. Our findings indicate that the HE4 age-dependent differences in males need to be taken into account. The definition of the HE4 URL in males and the correlation observed with eGFR and testosterone should foster the clinical use of HE4 beyond gynecologic cancer.

Background: The widely variable clinical manifestations of SARS-CoV2 disease (COVID-19) range from asymptomatic infections to multiple organ failure and death. Among the organs affected is the heart. This does not only affect people who already have previous cardiovascular problems, but also healthy people. This is a reason not to overlook any symptoms or to perform targeted examinations, even if apparently unrelated to the heart, for quick recognition and timely therapy. Aim of the study: This review recapitulates the current state of knowledge on the potential mechanisms and manifestation of myocarditis in patients with COVID-19 infection. Methods: A web-based search of published data was performed for all relevant studies on patients diagnosed with a COVID-19-induced acute myocarditis, and a total of 50 reports were included. The analysis of the studies evaluated highlights a male predominance, with the average age of patients being 55 years. The most common presenting symptoms included fever, shortness of breath, cough, and chest pain. Among ECG changes, non-specific ST-segment and T-wave amplitude alterations and ventricular tachycardia episodes were reported. Finally, we wanted to use a general evaluation without distinguishing between various countries, taking into consideration only the peer or reviewer, regardless of the declared value of the journals that have been published. Results and critical findings: The most common presenting symptoms included fever, shortness of breath, cough, and chest pain. Among ECG changes, non-specific ST-segment and T-wave amplitude alterations and ventricular tachycardia episodes were reported. In most patients, elevated levels of cardiac and inflammatory biomarkers were measured. Left ventricular dysfunction and hypokinesis were commonly exhibited symptoms. Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMRI) confirmed the diagnosis of myocarditis with features of cardiac edema and cardiac injury. Nine patients underwent histopathological examination. Treatment with corticosteroids and immunoglobulins was the most applied strategy following the administration of antivirals. Discussion: Despite the exponentially growing knowledge on the management of COVID-19 infection, current available data on SARS-CoV2-correlated myocarditis are still limited, and several difficulties may be encountered in the differential diagnosis of acute myocarditis in the context of COVID-19 disease. Conclusions: While diagnostic criteria and evaluation strategies for myocarditis are well described, no guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of myocarditis in COVID-19 patients have yet been established. Therefore, further research is needed to advance the understanding of this disease process and define the most appropriate strategic approach in these patients.
