BACKGROUND: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of using near-infrared fluorescent imaging (NIRF) imaging with indocyanine green as an intraoperative tool for achieving complete mediastinal lymph node (LN) resection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between September 2019 and July 2021, patients with potential for esophagectomy due to middle and lower thoracic esophageal cancer were enrolled in this study. All patients were scheduled for NIRF-guided mediastinal lymphadenectomy during esophageal cancer surgery and were appropriately assigned to the NIRF group. Patients who underwent esophagectomy between September 2017 and September 2019 were assigned to the historical control group upon satisfying the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Surgical outcomes and the number of removed LNs were compared between the two groups using 1:1 propensity score matching. RESULTS: Of 67 eligible patients, 59 patients were included in the NIRF group after postsurgical exclusions. The operative time was significantly shorter in the NIRF group than in the historical control group [180 (140-420) min versus 202 (137-338) min; P < 0.001]. The incidence of postoperative chylothorax and hoarseness were significantly lower in the NIRF group than in the historical control group (0% versus 10.2 %; P = 0.036, 3.4% versus 13.6%; P = 0.047). The number of dissected total LNs, mediastinal LNs, and negative LNs was significantly larger in the NIRF group than in the historical control group. The number of overall metastatic LNs and abdominal LNs was comparable between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: NIRF imaging can assist in the thorough and complete mediastinal LNs dissections without increasing complications in patients undergoing esophagectomy.

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by esophagectomy is the standard treatment for patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). This study explored correlations of clinical factors and dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters with postoperative cardiopulmonary complications and predicted their risk by establishing a nomogram model. METHODS: Clinical and DVH parameters of ESCC patients who underwent trimodality treatment from 2002 to 2020 were collected. Postoperative cardiopulmonary complications were recorded. Logistic regression analysis was applied, and a nomogram model was constructed. Area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analyses were performed to evaluate the performance of the nomogram. RESULTS: Of the 307 ESCC patients enrolled in this study, 65 (21.2%) experienced pulmonary complications and 57 (18.6%) experienced cardiac complications. The following six risk factors were identified as independent risk factors for pulmonary complications by multivariate logistic regression analyses in the integrated model: male sex (odds ratio [OR], 3.26; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27-9.70; P = 0.021), post-radiation therapy (RT) forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) (OR, 0.51; 95% CI 0.28-0.90; P = 0.023), mean lung dose (MLD) (OR, 1.13; 95% CI 1.01-1.28; P = 0.041), and pre-RT monocyte (OR, 8.36; 95% CI 1.23-11.7; P = 0.03). The AUC of this integrated model was 0.705 (95% CI 0.64-0.77). The paclitaxel and cisplatin (TP) concurrent chemotherapy regimen was the independent predictor of cardiac complication (OR, 2.50; 95% CI 1.22-5.55; P = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS: For ESCC patients who underwent trimodality treatment, male sex, post-RT FEV1, MLD, and pre-RT monocyte were confirmed as significant predictors of postoperative pulmonary complications. A nomogram model including six risk factors was further established. The independent predictor of cardiac complication was TP concurrent chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: We aimed to perform serial quality-of-life (QoL) evaluations and comparisons in patients after esophagectomy with intrathoracic anastomosis (IA) or cervical anastomosis (CA). METHODS: Between November 2012 and March 2015, patients who underwent esophagectomy with IA or CA for mid-esophageal to distal esophageal or gastroesophageal junction cancer were followed up. QoL was measured using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) and esophagus-specific questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-OES18) before surgery, at discharge, and at 1, 6, 12, and 24 months after discharge. Linear mixed-effect models were used to assess the mean score differences (MDs) of each QoL scale between the two techniques, and changes in QoL over time. Potential confounders were adjusted. RESULTS: In total, 219 patients were analyzed (IA, n = 127; CA, n = 92). All patients' QoL decreased immediately after esophagectomy. Global QoL and most functioning and symptom scales exhibited a return to baseline levels within 2 years of discharge, except for physical functioning and several symptoms (dyspnea, diarrhea, dysphagia, and reflux). There was no difference in overall health score between the two groups (MD 2, 95% confidence interval [CI] - 1 to 6). Compared with IA, patients with CA reported more trouble with taste (MD - 12, 95% CI - 19 to - 4) and talking (MD - 11, 95% CI - 19 to 2) at discharge. No differences in long-term QoL were found between groups. CONCLUSIONS: CA was associated with more trouble with taste and talking in the short term than IA. The long-term QoL did not differ between the two approaches.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of baseline Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in recurrent or metastatic primary pulmonary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (PLELC). Methods: 75 patients with baseline EBV DNA were included. The relationships between baseline EBV DNA and clinical characteristics, survival and objective response rate were analyzed. Results: The baseline EBV DNA levels were related to the liver, chest wall, distant lymph node(s) or multiple sites of distant metastasis. The high baseline EBV DNA group (≥41,900 copies/ml) was related to shorter progression-free and overall survival in univariate analysis and remained significant for progression-free survival in multivariate analysis. Conclusion: The baseline EBV DNA is a valuable biomarker for predicting prognosis and reflecting tumor burden in recurrent or metastatic PLELC.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome following the strategy of endoscopic R0 resection (ER) plus adjuvant treatment (AT) versus esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell cancer in T1a invading muscularis mucosa (M3)-T1b stage. METHODS: We evaluated the outcomes of 46 esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) patients with T1aM3-T1b stage who underwent ER + AT from the Esophageal Cancer Endoscopic Therapy Consortium (ECETC) and compared these outcomes to 92 patients who underwent esophagectomy. Propensity score matching (1:2) was used, with overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) being compared between the two groups. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 32 months, there were no statistical differences (P = 0.226) in OS between the two groups. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year overall survival in the esophagectomy group was 95%, 91%, and 84%, respectively. There were no mortalities within three years in the ER + AT group. The RFS between the two groups was also not significantly different (P = 0.938). The 1-, 2-, and 3-year RFS of patients in the esophagectomy group was 90%, 90%, and 83%, respectively, while it was 97%, 94%, and 74% in the ER + AT group, respectively. The local recurrence rates between the two groups were not significantly different (P = 0.277). CONCLUSIONS: This first multicenter analysis showed similar outcomes were found regarding OS and RFS between the two groups in T1aM3-T1b stage patients. ER + AT may be considered in high-risk patients or for those who refuse esophagectomy.

PURPOSE: To determine risk factors, treatment outcomes, and prognostic factors for esophageal fistula (EF) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) during radiotherapy. METHODS: Between 2010 and 2018, 109 patients with EF during radiotherapy were retrospectively collected. A controlled cohort including 416 patients who received definitive chemoradiotherapy without EF was used to compare risk factors and survival outcomes. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of EF. Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to adjust for potential confounding factors. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis demonstrated that sex, body mass index, alcohol history, esophageal ulceration, primary tumor length, T stage, and absolute lymphocyte count were independent risk factors for EF. After PSM, patients with EF showed remarkably worse prognosis than those without EF (median overall survival: 13.0 versus 20.5 months; P = 0.009). For patients with EF, serum albumin level (≥ 35 g/L), subsequent radiotherapy, and fistula closure were associated with significantly prolonged survival. In addition, esophageal-mediastinum fistula and subsequent radiotherapy were positive predictors for fistula closure. CONCLUSIONS: We identified risk factors for radiotherapy-related EF and its unfavorable prognosis in patients with ESCC. Of them, patients with serum albumin level of ≥ 35 g/L, subsequent radiotherapy after EF, and fistula closure had a more favorable survival.

OBJECTIVE: This study was intended to identify prognostic biomarkers for lymph node (LN)-positive locoregional esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Surgery is a major treatment for LN-positive locoregional ESCC patients in China. However, patient outcomes are poor and heterogeneous. METHODS: ESCC-associated miRNAs were identified by microarray and validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses in ESCC and normal esophageal epithelial samples. A multi-miRNA based classifier was established using a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator model in a training set of 145 LN-positive locoregional ESCCs, and further assessed in internal testing and independent validation sets of 145 and 243 patients, respectively. RESULTS: Twenty ESCC-associated miRNAs were identified and validated. A 4-miRNA based classifier (miR-135b-5p, miR-139-5p, miR-29c-5p, and miR-338-3p) was generated to classify LN-positive locoregional ESCC patients into high and low-risk groups. Patients with high-risk scores in the training set had a lower 5-year overall survival rate [8.7%, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0-20.3] than those with low-risk scores (50.3%, 95% CI: 40.0-60.7; P < 0.0001). The prognostic accuracy of the classifier was validated in the internal testing (P < 0.0001) and independent validation sets (P = 0.00073). Multivariate survival analyses showed that the 4-miRNA based classifier was an independent prognostic factor, and the combination of the 4-miRNA based classifier and clinicopathological prognostic factors significantly improved the prognostic accuracy of clinicopathological prognostic factors alone. CONCLUSION: Our 4-miRNA based classifier is a reliable prognostic prediction tool for overall survival in LN-positive locoregional ESCC patients and might offer a novel probability of ESCC treatment individualization.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate a revised nodal category based on the value of the lymph node (LN) station ratio (SR, metastatic LN stations/examined LN stations) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. METHODS: Data were obtained from 857 ESCC patients who underwent primary radical esophagectomy. Prognostic performance was evaluated using the Harrell concordance index (C-index), Akaike information criterion (AIC), and likelihood ratio χ2 test (LR χ2 test). RESULTS: Each subgroup among the SR categories demonstrated discriminatory results, whereas no significant survival difference was observed between the N2 versus N3 classifications under the AJCC pN system. Using the AJCC TNM staging system, the survival curves separated between stages IIIA-IIIB and IIIB-IVA. However, when the T-SR-M scheme category was applied, the survival curves between stages IIA-IIB, IIIA-IIIB, and IIIB-IVA were significantly different. Furthermore, both the SR category and the T-SR-M staging system showed superior performance with higher C-index and LR χ2 test values and lower AIC values compared with the pN category and TNM staging system, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Following radical esophagectomy, the SR category demonstrated superior prognostic ability relative to the AJCC pN category in ESCC patients.

OBJECTIVE: To identify miRNA markers useful for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (neo-CRT) response prediction. SUMMARY: Neo-CRT followed by surgery improves ESCC patients' survival compared with surgery alone. However, CRT outcomes are heterogeneous, and no current methods can predict CRT responses. METHODS: Differentially expressed miRNAs between ESCC pathological responders and nonresponders after neo-CRT were identified by miRNA profiling and verified by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) of 27 ESCCs in the training set. Several class prediction algorithms were used to build the response-classifying models with the qPCR data. Predictive powers of the models were further assessed with a second set of 79 ESCCs. RESULTS: Ten miRNAs with greater than a 1.5-fold change between pathological responders and nonresponders were identified and verified, respectively. A support vector machine (SVM) prediction model, composed of 4 miRNAs (miR-145-5p, miR-152, miR-193b-3p, and miR-376a-3p), were developed. It provided overall accuracies of 100% and 87.3% for discriminating pathological responders and nonresponders in the training and external validation sets, respectively. In multivariate analysis, the subgroup determined by the SVM model was the only independent factor significantly associated with neo-CRT response in the external validation sets. CONCLUSIONS: Combined qPCR of the 4 miRNAs provides the possibility of ESCC neo-CRT response prediction, which may facilitate individualized ESCC treatment. Further prospective validation in larger independent cohorts is necessary to fully assess its predictive power.

The migration and invasion inhibitory protein (MIIP) was shown to function as a tumor suppressor gene in gliomas by inhibiting tumor cell growth, migration, and invasion. However, its role and clinical significance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have not been elucidated. We investigated the correlation of MIIP expression and clinical outcome in a group of surgically resected ESCCs. Tissue microarrays constructed of 253 surgically resected ESCC primary tumors and paired paracancerous normal esophageal epithelia were used for MIIP evaluation by immunohistochemistry. The clinical and prognostic significance of MIIP expression was analyzed statistically. The expression of MIIP expression in cancer tissues was increased significantly in comparison with the paired paracancerous normal epithelia (P < 0.001). And, MIIP expression was associated with ESCC cells' differentiation (P < 0.001). By Kaplan-Meier analysis, patients with low MIIP expression exhibited significantly improved overall survival (OS, P = 0.039) and a tendency of improved disease-free survival (DFS, P = 0.086) than those with high MIIP expression. In addition, MIIP expression could distinguish OS or DFS of patients with tumors in stage T3-4 (P = 0.020, 0.028), N0 (P = 0.008, 0.032), and stage II (P = 0.004, 0.019), as well as at lower thoracic esophagus (P = 0.024, 0.090). Multivariate analysis showed that MIIP expression was an independent prognostic factor in ESCC OS and DFS. In conclusion, MIIP expressed higher in ESCCs than in paracancerous normal esophageal epithelia and was a positive, independent prognostic factor in resected ESCCs.

The survival rate of esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) patients is still dismal. Therefore, novel prognostic biomarkers are critically needed for patients with ESCC. SLC9A9 has been reported to be downregulated in hormone-sensitive prostate cancer; however, the correlations between SLC9A9 and ESCC prognosis are unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the expression and prognostic significance of SLC9A9 in resectable ESCC. Fresh frozen or paraffin-embedded samples were collected from 167 or 59 patients with resectable ESCC, respectively. The expression of SLC9A9 was assessed by reverse transcription and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis (167 patients) and immunohistochemistry (61 patients). The expression of SLC9A9 was not associated with patient clinicopathological characteristics at both transcription and protein levels. The 5-year overall survival in the high SLC9A9 messenger RNA (mRNA) group (n = 106) was poorer than that in the low expression group (n = 61) (34.6 vs. 65.9 %, P < 0.001). Notably, higher SLC9A9 protein expression was also correlated with lower 5-year overall survival (33.1 vs. 66.5 %, P = 0.023). Moreover, multivariate analysis revealed that SLC9A9 mRNA (HR, 2.41; 95 % CI, 1.47-3.97; P = 0.001) and protein (HR, 2.31; 95 %CI, 1.06-5.02; P = 0.034) were independent prognostic factors. In conclusion, the expression of SLC9A9 can be a prognostic predictor for ESCC.

BACKGROUD AND OBJECTIVES: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is of great importance in cancer management. The aim was to identify factors that influence postoperative HRQL in esophageal carcinoma patients. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted to enroll 196 patients with esophageal carcinoma from November 2012 to June 2013. Sociademographic and clinicopathological parameters were recorded in detail. EORTC-QLQ C30 and ES18 were used to assess HRQL before surgery, at discharge, 1 and 6 months after discharge. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors independently influencing quality of life at 6 months after discharge. RESULTS: HRQL dramatically decreased after esophagectomy, but restored within 6 months in the most scales. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that gender (P = 0.002) and anastomotic stricture (P = 0.001) were the independent predictors of poor global quality-of-life 6 months after discharge. Anastomotic stricture occurred in 22 patients (11.2%), and their performance in social function (P = 0.04), problems with eating (P = 0.006), choking when swallowing (P < 0.001) were significantly poorer at 6 months after discharge. There were not significant differences in global quality-of-life between patients with and without anastomotic leakage at three postoperative assessments. CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative HRQL is restored within 6 months after discharge. Occurrence of anastomotic stricture significantly decreases HRQL after esophagectomy.

Alcohol is a well-established cause of esophageal carcinoma, but its effect on survival is little known and contradictory. To clarify whether drinking is an independent predictor of survival in esophageal carcinoma, 2151 Chinese patients, receiving surgical resection from January 1997 to December 2008, were followed until March 2014. Cox proportional hazards analysis was applied to evaluate the prognostic effect of alcohol consumption. The median follow-up was 64 months. The median overall survival (OS; 42 months) and disease-free survival (DFS; 33 months) for never-drinkers were significantly higher than ever-drinkers (27 and 22 months, respectively). In the multivariate Cox model that was adjusted for age, weight loss, stage according to criteria set by the American Joint Committee on Cancer, radicality of surgery, adjuvant treatment, smoking status, and gender, the hazard ratios of ever-drinking were 1.22 (1.06-1.41, P = 0.005) on OS, and 1.16 (1.01-1.34, P = 0.037) on DFS. The hazardous effect on OS and DFS of drinking grew statistically significantly in a dose-dependent manner with increasing amount of alcohol consumption per day (both P-value for trend < 0.05). The predictive effect of drinking on OS (P = 0.596) or DFS (P = 0.207) was not significant in the subgroup with esophageal adenocarcinoma (n = 195). The current study revealed that the survival is shortened, of those patients who consume alcohol before diagnosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, which are not attributable to differences in stage, smoking status, and gender. Alcohol control should be emphasized to reduce mortality of esophageal carcinoma, and further outcome studies should include alcohol as a potential prognosticator.

The presence of lymph node metastasis is an important prognostic factor for patients with esophageal cancer. Accurate assessment of lymph nodes in thoracic esophageal carcinoma is essential for selecting appropriate treatment and forecasting disease progression. Positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) is becoming an important tool in the workup of esophageal carcinoma. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) in assessing lymph node metastasis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) prior to surgery. Fifty-nine surgical patients with pathologically confirmed thoracic ESCC were retrospectively studied. These patients underwent radical esophagectomy with pathologic evaluation of lymph nodes. They all had (18)F-FDG PET/CT scans in their preoperative staging procedures. None had a prior history of cancer. The pathologic status and PET/CT SUVmax of lymph nodes were collected to calculate the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and to determine the best cutoff value of the PET/CT SUVmax to distinguish benign from malignant lymph nodes. Lymph node data from 27 others were used for the validation. A total of 323 lymph nodes including 39 metastatic lymph nodes were evaluated in the training cohort, and 117 lymph nodes including 32 metastatic lymph nodes were evaluated in the validation cohort. The cutoff point of the SUVmax for lymph nodes was 4.1, as calculated by ROC curve (sensitivity, 80%; specificity, 92%; accuracy, 90%). When this cutoff value was applied to the validation cohort, a sensitivity, a specificity, and an accuracy of 81%, 88%, and 86%, respectively, were obtained. These results suggest that the SUVmax of lymph nodes predicts malignancy. Indeed, when an SUVmax of 4.1 was used instead of 2.5, FDG-PET/CT was more accurate in assessing nodal metastasis.

Background: With the popularization of low-dose spiral computed tomography (CT), an increasing number of stage IA lung cancers have been discovered. Patients with stage IA lung adenocarcinoma who undergo radical surgical resection tend to have a favourable prognosis. However, A significant proportion of patients undergo postoperative recurrence and metastasis. The purpose of this study was to screen out the risk factors in patients with stage IA lung adenocarcinoma and establish a nomogram model to help clinicians identify high-risk patient groups. Methods: A nomogram was conducted based on a retrospective study of 731 patients with stage IA lung adenocarcinoma. Concordance index (C-index), clinical decision analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calibration curve were used to evaluate the discrimination and calibration of the nomogram. Survival curves were drawn by Kaplan-Meier method, and significance was determined by log-rank test. According to nomogram scores, the patients were divided into low- and high-risk subgroups. Results: The internal and external cohorts included 731 and 235 eligible patients. In univariate and multivariate analyses, the independent factors for recurrence-free survival (RFS) were all selected in the nomogram. C-indexes of the nomogram were 0.812 (95% confidence interval: 0.756-0.868) and 0.817 in the internal and external validation, respectively, showing that the prominent prediction performance was great. Nomogram scores showed that patients in the low-risk group (5-RFS rate, 0.797 to 0.99) had better RFS than patients in the high-risk group (5-RFS rate, 0.10 to 0.797) (P<0.001). Conclusions: A nomogram model was established that can be beneficial to evaluate RFS in patients with stage IA lung adenocarcinoma after curative resection. It can be of value in helping clinicians develop treatment strategies to improve patient survival.

BACKGROUND: Although electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) is highly sensitive in the diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary nodules (PPNs), its diagnostic yield for subgroups of smaller PPNs is under evaluation. OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic yield evaluation of biopsy using ENB for PPNs <2 cm. DESIGN: The diagnostic yield, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the ENB-mediated biopsy for PPNs were evaluated. METHODS: Patients who had PPNs with diameters <2 cm and underwent ENB-mediated biopsy between May 2015 and February 2020 were consecutively enrolled. The final diagnosis was made via pathological examination after surgery. RESULTS: A total of 82 lesions from 65 patients were analyzed. The median tumor size was 11 mm. All lesions were subjected to ENB-mediated biopsy, of which 29 and 53 were classified as malignant and benign, respectively. Subsequent segmentectomy, lobectomy, or wedge resection, following pathological examinations were performed on 64 nodules from 57 patients. The overall sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value for nodules <2 cm were 53.3%, 91.7%, 92.3%, and 51.2%, respectively. The receiver operating curve showed an area under the curve of 0.721 (p < 0.001). Additionally, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 62.5%, 100%, 100%, and 42.9%, respectively, for nodules with diameters equal to or larger than 1 cm; and 30.8%, 86.7%, 66.7%, and 59.1%, respectively, for nodules less than 1 cm. In the subgroup analysis, neither the lobar location nor the distance of the PPNs to the pleura affected the accuracy of the ENB diagnosis. However, the spiculated sign had a negative impact on the accuracy of the ENB biopsy (p = 0.010). CONCLUSION: ENB has good specificity and positive predictive value for diagnosing PPNs <2 cm; however, the spiculated sign may negatively affect ENB diagnostic accuracy. In addition, the diagnostic reliability may only be limited to PPNs equal to or larger than 1 cm.

BACKGROUND: C-terminal Hsp-interacting protein (CHIP) is an HSP70 and HSP90 interacting co-chaperone and an E3 ubiquitin ligase. Previous studies have reported the role of CHIP in cancer progression by targeting protein degradation. However, its role and clinical significance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has not been elucidated. We investigated the correlation of CHIP expression and clinical outcome in a group of T3N1-3M0 surgically resected ESCCs. METHODS: Tissue microarrays constructed of 234 surgically resected T3N1-3M0 ESCC primary tumors (PTs) and 163 paired metastatic lymph nodes (MLNs), and sections of 56 cancer-adjacent normal epithelial blocks were used for CHIP evaluation by immunohistochemistry. The clinical and prognostic significance of CHIP expression was analyzed statistically. RESULTS: The expression level of CHIP in ESCC MLNs was significantly higher than that in PTs (P < 0.001). Patients with low MLNs' CHIP expression demonstrated better overall survival than those with high CHIP expression (median, 44 vs. 17.9 months; P = 0.010). Multivariate analysis showed that the MLNs' CHIP expression level was an independent prognostic factor in ESCC (relative risk, 2.157; P = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS: High expression of CHIP in MLNs suggests poor prognosis for patients with resected T3N1-3M0 ESCC. The result suggests that considering the protein expression of metastatic tumors is important for prognostic prediction.
