RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As one of the microelements, nitrogen play essential roles in cereal production. Although the use of chemical fertilizers has significantly improved the yield of wheat, it has also caused increasingly adverse environmental pollution. Revealing the molecular mechanism manipulating wheat nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and cultivating wheat germplasms with high nitrogen use efficiency has become important goals for wheat researchers. In this study, we investigated the physiological and transcriptional differences of three wheat cultivars with different NUE under low nitrogen stress. RESULTS: The results showed that, under low nitrogen conditions, the activities of nitrogen metabolism-related enzymes (GS, NR, GDH), antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT) and soluble protein contents of ZM366 (high NUE cultivar) were higher than those of JD8 (low NUE cultivar). The hybrid cultivar of ZM366 and JD8 showed mid-parent or over-parent heterosis. Transcriptome analysis revealed that 'alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism', 'terpenoid backbone biosynthesis' and 'vitamin B6 metabolism' pathways play key roles in nitrogen use efficiency in wheat. The significant enhancement of the 'Calvin cycle' and 'photorespiration' in ZM366 contributed to its higher level of carbon metabolism under low nitrogen stress, which is an important attribute differs from the other two varieties. In addition, the activation of ABA signal transduction and biosynthesis pathways also helps to maintain NUE under low- nitrogen conditions. Moreover, bHLH transcription factors were also found to play a positive role in wheat NUE. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, these results enriched our knowledge of the mechanism of wheat NUE, and provided a theoretical basis for improving wheat NUE and breeding new cultivars.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is limited information on combination of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) and systemic therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (Ad-HCC). We aim to compare the efficacy and safety of HAIC plus camrelizumab (a PD-1 inhibitor) and apatinib (an VEGFR-2 inhibitor) versus camrelizumab and apatinib for Ad-HCC. METHODS: From April 2019 to October 2022, 416 patients with Ad-HCC who received either HAIC plus camrelizumab and apatinib (TRIPLET protocol, n = 207) or camrelizumab and apatinib (C-A protocol, n = 209) were reviewed retrospectively. The propensity score matching (PSM) was used to reduce selective bias. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were compared using the Kaplan-Meier method with the log-rank test. Cox regression analyses of independent prognostic factors were evaluated. RESULTS: After PSM 1:1, 109 patients were assigned to two groups. The median OS of not reached in the TRIPLET group was significantly longer than that of 19.9 months in the C-A group (p < 0.001), while in the TRIPLET group, the median PFS of 11.5 months was significantly longer than that of 9.6 months in the C-A group (p < 0.001). Multivariate analyses showed that the factors significantly affected the OS were CTP grade, tumor number > 3, and TRIPLET treatment (p < 0.001). Grade 3/4 adverse events occurred at a rate of 82.1% vs. 71.3% in TRIPLET and C-A groups, respectively. CONCLUSION: The TRIPLET protocol has promising survival benefits in the management of patients with Ad-HCC, with acceptable safety. TRAIL REGISTRATION: The study has been retrospectively registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ( https://www.chictr.org.cn/ , ChiCTR2300075828).

RESUMO

The leaves of plants can be recommended as a cheap and sustainable environmental protection tool to mitigate PAHs with high toxicity in the ambient environment because they can serve as a reactor to remove ambient PAHs. Although previous studies have demonstrated that PAHs exhibit toxicological features, our knowledge about how ambient PAHs influence the leaves of plants is limited regarding the leaves of plants reducing ambient PAHs as a reactor. In this study, 1-year-old Rosa chinensis Jacq. with good growth potential was selected as a model plant. The leaves of Rosa chinensis Jacq. were exposed to 16 types of PAHs in the environmental concentration exposure group (0.1 µg L-1) and high-concentration exposure group (5 µg L-1) for seven days. In comparison, the leaves of Rosa chinensis Jacq. were exposed to de-ionized water and were chosen as the control group. During the exposure periods, the physiological parameters of leaves including, chlorophyll value, water content, temperature and nitrogen, were monitored using a chlorophyll meter. After 7 days of exposure, the leaves in the control and exposure groups were collected and used for whole-transcriptome analysis. Our results demonstrate that significant differentially expressed genes were observed in the leaves of Rosa chinensis Jacq. exposed to individual PAHs at 5 µg L-1 compared to the control group. These differentially expressed genes were involved in seven main pathways using bioinformatic analyses. In contrast, the levels of PAHs at environmentally relevant concentrations had negligible impacts on the physiological parameters and the gene transcription levels of the leaves of Rosa chinensis Jacq. Our results may provide direct evidence to remove ambient PAHs using terrestrial trees without considering the risk of PAHs at environmentally relevant concentrations on the leaves of terrestrial plants.

RESUMO

Natural hyperbolic materials (HMs) in two dimensions (2D) have an extraordinarily high anisotropy and a hyperbolic dispersion relation. Some of them can even sustain hyperbolic polaritons with great directional propagation and light compression to deeply sub-wavelength scales due to their inherent anisotropy. Herein, the anisotropic optical features of 2D natural HMs are reviewed. Four hyperbolic polaritons (i.e., phonon polaritons, plasmon polaritons, exciton polaritons, and shear polaritons) as well as their generation mechanism are discussed in detail. The natural merits of 2D HMs hold promise for practical quantum photonic applications such as valley quantum interference, mid-infrared polarizers, spontaneous emission enhancement, near-field thermal radiation, and a new generation of optoelectronic components, among others. The conclusion of these analyses outlines existing issues and potential interesting directions for 2D natural HMs. These findings could spur more interest in anisotropic 2D atomic crystals in the future, as well as the quick generation of natural HMs for new applications.
