BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness have markedly reduced life expectancy; cardiometabolic disease is a major cause. Psychiatric hospital inpatients have elevated levels of cardiometabolic risk factors and are to a high degree dependent of the routines and facilities of the institutions. Studies of lifestyle interventions to reduce cardiometabolic risk in psychiatric inpatients are few. The current study aimed at assessing the feasibility and effects of a lifestyle intervention including Motivational Interviewing (MI) on physical activity levels, cardiometabolic risk status and mental health status in psychotic disorder inpatients. METHODS: Prospective naturalistic intervention study of 83 patients at long term inpatient psychosis treatment wards in South-Eastern Norway. Patients were assessed 3-6 months prior to, at start and 6 months after a life-style intervention program including training of staff in MI, simple changes in routines and improvements of facilities for physical exercise. Assessments were done by clinical staff and included level of physical activity, motivation, life satisfaction, symptom levels (MADRS, AES-C, PANSS, and GAF) as well as anthropometric and biochemical markers of cardiometabolic risk. A mixed model was applied to analyze change over time. RESULTS: A total of 88% of patients received MI interventions, with a mean of 2.5 MI interventions per week per patient. The physical activity level was not increased, but activity level was positively associated with motivation and negatively associated with positive symptoms. Triglyceride levels and number of smokers were significantly reduced and a significant decrease in symptom levels was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The current results suggest that a simple, low cost life-style intervention program focusing on motivational change is feasible and may reduce symptoms and improve lifestyle habits in psychosis patients in long term treatment facilities. AIMS: As children's fitness continues to decline, frequent and systematic monitoring of fitness is important. Easy-to-use and low-cost methods with acceptable accuracy are essential in screening situations. This study aimed to investigate how the measurements of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) relate to selected measurements of fitness in children. METHODS: A total of 1731 children from grades 1 to 6 were selected who had a complete set of height, body mass, running performance, handgrip strength and muscle mass measurements. A composite fitness score was established from the sum of sex- and age-specific z-scores for the variables running performance, handgrip strength and muscle mass. This fitness z-score was compared to z-scores and quartiles of BMI, WC and WHtR using analysis of variance, linear regression and receiver operator characteristic analysis. RESULTS: The regression analysis showed that z-scores for BMI, WC and WHtR all were linearly related to the composite fitness score, with WHtR having the highest R2 at 0.80. The correct classification of fit and unfit was relatively high for all three measurements. WHtR had the best prediction of fitness of the three with an area under the curve of 0.92 ( p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: BMI, WC and WHtR were all found to be feasible measurements, but WHtR had a higher precision in its classification into fit and unfit in this population.

AIMS: With overweight and obesity increasing worldwide, it has become ever more important to monitor the development and distribution of adiposity in children. This study investigated how the measurements of waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in children 6-12 years old relate to earlier studies. METHODS: In 2015, 2271 children (boys, n = 1150) were measured for height, weight, and WC. Parental education level was used as a measure of socioeconomic status. RESULTS: A significant increase in WC with age was revealed for both sexes ( p < .0001). Boys at 10 and 12 years had a larger WC than girls; otherwise no difference between sexes was found. The WHtR decreased with age for girls ( p < .0001); 14% of the sample displayed a WHtR ≥ 0.50. Comparison with earlier studies showed a higher WC and WHtR despite no change in weight and body mass index. CONCLUSION: WC and WHtR are recommended as tools for identifying central obesity in children. The results indicate increased WC in 6-12-year-old children compared with earlier findings.

AIMS: The aim of the study was to describe the natural course of handgrip strength development in primary school children and to establish a reference material to be used in future screening studies. In addition, the study aims to investigate a possible association between handgrip strength and cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: Anthropometric measures along with results for handgrip strength, endurance tests, blood pressure and cholesterol were measured on 2272 children of both sexes. An ROC analysis was used to estimate the suitability of handgrip strength as a predictor for known cardiometabolic risk factors. RESULTS: A reference material for handgrip strength is presented for boys and girls aged 6-12 years. The results indicate that handgrip strength is unsuitable as a predictor for cardiometabolic risk factors in children. CONCLUSIONS: The results may be used as reference values for handgrip strength in 6-12-year-old children of both sexes. Handgrip strength may not be used as a screening tool for cardiometabolic risk factors in pre-pubertal children.

AIMS: The main aim of the present study was to investigate the clustering of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome in a large, healthy representative Norwegian child population. METHODS: From a population of 2817, parents of 2297 children agreed to participate. Values of waist circumference (WC), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), systolic blood pressure (sysBP), haemoglobin-A1c (HbA1c) and Andersen aerobic fitness test were used to test clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors in this sample. Expected distributions of probability for zero to five risk factors are, respectively, 23.7%, 39.6%, 26.4%, 8.8%, 1.5% and 0.1%. A cardiometabolic risk score from zero to five for each individual was derived by adding the number of variables in the least desirable quartile (highest for WC, sysBP, TC and HbA1c; lowest for aerobic fitness and HDL). RESULTS: A risk ratio of 5.8 (95% confidence interval 0.7-46.9) was found for five risk factors, though the small sample size rendered the results non-significant. An explorative analysis combining children with four and five risk factors did not reveal any significant clustering either. CONCLUSIONS: No clustering of risk factors was found among Norwegian children aged 6-12 years.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting running performance in children. METHOD: A cross-sectional study exploring the relationships between height, weight, waist circumference, muscle mass, body fat percentage, relevant biomarkers, and the Andersen intermittent running test in 2272 children aged 6 to 12 years. Parental education level was used as a non-physiological explanatory variable. RESULTS: Mean values (SD) and percentiles are presented as reference values. Height (ß = 6.4, p < .0001), high values of haemoglobin (ß = 18, p = .013) and low percentage of body fat (ß = -7.5, p < .0001) showed an association with results from the running test. In addition, high parental education level showed a positive association with the running test. CONCLUSION: Boys display better running performance than girls at all age ages, except 7 years old, probably because of additional muscle mass and less fatty tissue. Height and increased level of haemoglobin positively affected running performance. Lower body fat percentage and high parental education level correlated with better running performance.

AIMS: The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between parents' level of education, measurements of physical attributes, and quality of life in a general sample of primary school children. METHODS: The children's and the parents' versions of the Inventory of Life Quality in Children and Adolescents (ILC) were used to measure health-related quality of life (QOL) in 2140 school children (response rate 93%) and 1639 parents (response rate 71%) recruited from nine primary schools in Norway. A set of physical characteristics were also measured in the children: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, average daily minutes of physical activity, aerobic fitness, and handgrip strength. RESULTS: The regression analysis showed stronger relationships between the covariates and QOL for the parents' assessments than for the children's. Parents' level of education was significantly related to children's QOL, with the strongest association for parental QOL assessment. Among the physical variables, aerobic fitness ( B = 0.01, p > .001 in both samples), and handgrip strength in the parents' sample ( B = 0.21, p < .05) were significantly related to the children's QOL. CONCLUSIONS: The present study replicated the well-known finding that parents' sociodemographic status is important for children's QOL. Our new contribution is to show that the physiological variables aerobic fitness and muscular strength also contributed significantly to explain variance in QOL. This opens up interesting perspectives on how to improve QOL among children through more emphasis on physical activity and physical fitness in schools.

PURPOSE: Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause for the markedly reduced life expectancy in people with severe mental illness (SMI). Hospital departments should provide adequate prevention of cardiometabolic risk by optimizing prevention and treatment. Characteristics of cardiometabolic risk factors in inpatients are still not well known. We aimed to describe the status of cardiometabolic risk factors in inpatients with SMI and identify associations with psychiatric status and treatment. METHODS: A cross sectional descriptive study of inpatients with SMI from long term psychosis treatment wards in South Eastern Norway was performed. Comprehensive assessments of cardiometabolic risk factors, physical activity, lifestyle habits, symptoms, life satisfaction and treatment were made. Associations and potential prognostic factors were analyzed using linear and logistic regressions. RESULTS: A total of 83 patients were included in the study, but many individual datasets were incomplete. Over half of the subjects had unhealthy eating habits. Obesity (class 1-3) was found in 44%, 23% had elevated fasting triglycerides, 26% had elevated blood pressure and 78% smoked daily. Low levels of physical activity were significantly associated with higher levels of depression (p = .007). A nominal increase in cardiometabolic risk factors was found for olanzapine and clozapine users. CONCLUSION: Inpatients in long term psychosis treatment wards have alarmingly high cardiometabolic risk. Level of physical activity was associated with both psychiatric and somatic health. Focus on lifestyle and somatic health should be an integral part of the treatment for hospitalized SMI patients.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is increasing worldwide, also among children. Information about primary prevention of NCD's is increasing; however, convincing strategies among children is needed. The present paper describes the design and methods in the Health Oriented Pedagogical Project (HOPP) study. The main objective is to evaluate the effects of a school-based physical activity intervention program on cardio-metabolic risk factors. Secondary objectives include assessment of physical, psychological and academic performance variables. METHODS: The HOPP study is a 7 years longitudinal large-scale controlled intervention in seven elementary schools (n = 1545) with two control schools (n = 752); all aged 6-11 years at baseline. The school-based physical activity intervention program includes an increase in physical activity (PA) of 225 min/week as an integrated part of theoretical learning, in addition to the curriculum based 90 min/week of ordinary PA. Primary outcomes include cardio-metabolic risk factors measured as PA level, BMI status, waist circumference, muscle mass, percent fat, endurance test performance, total serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), non-HDL, micro C-reactive protein (mCRP) and long-term blood sugar (HbA1c). In addition, secondary outcomes include anthropometric growth measures, physical fitness, quality of life (QoL), mental health, executive functions, diet and academic performance. DISCUSSION: HOPP will provide evidence of effects on cardio-metabolic risk factors after a long-term PA intervention program in elementary schoolchildren. School-based PA intervention programs may be an effective arena for health promotion and disease prevention. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study is registered in Clinical trials (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02495714 ) as of June 20th - 2015, retrospectively registered. The collection of baseline values was initiated in mid-January 2015.

PURPOSE: We investigated the level of pro- and anti-inflammatory biomarkers before and after 8 weeks of unsupervised physical activity (PA) initiated by employer. METHODS: During autumn 2014, background data, blood samples and self-reported exercise level were collected from 76 men and 41 women in a Norwegian road maintenance company. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), leptin, adiponectin, p-selectin and CD40 ligand (CD40L) were analyzed. [Formula: see text] was measured in a subgroup of 50 subjects. RESULTS: With reference point of exercise ≤1 time/week, we found that participants who exercised 2-3 times/week had higher [Formula: see text] values (5.6 mL kg-1 min-1; 95% CI [1.3, 9.9]). MCP-1 was lower in those who exercised ≥ 4 times/week (-81.98 pg/ml [-142.9, -21.0]). IL-6 and p-selectin levels were lower in females who exercised ≥4 times/week (-1.04 pg/ml [-2.04, -0.03] and -13.75 ng/ml [-24.03, -3.48]). Leptin was lower in participants who exercised 2-3 times/week (-0.39 µg/ml ln [-0.68, -0.09]) and ≥4 times/week (-0.69 µg/ml ln [-1.10, -0.28]). During follow-up, [Formula: see text] increased (2.9 mL kg-1 min-1 [1.5, 4.3]), while p-selectin and CD40L decreased (-2.33 ng/ml [-3.78, -0.87] and 718.14 ng/ml [-1368, -68]). MCP-1 levels decreased among men (-32.70 pg/ml [-51.21, -14.19]). A joint analysis of all biomarkers (inversed adiponectin) showed that those who exercised ≥4 times/week at baseline had lower total levels of biomarkers and that total biomarker levels decreased during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Exercising several times a week was associated with less inflammation compared to exercising once a week or less. During the 8-week follow-up, total levels of biomarkers of inflammation improved.

BACKGROUND: While the health benefits of physical activity are well established, little is known about health effects of physical activity programs initiated by employer. METHODS: Background data and level of physical activity were collected by questionnaire among 78 men and 43 women working in road maintenance pre and post an 8-week physical activity motivational program. As a part of the program steps measured by accelerometer were registered online where team and individual performances could be continuously monitored. The physical activity levels were registered as 1) those physical active ≤1 time per week, 2) 2-3 times per week and 3) ≥4 times a week. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), blood pressure, resting heart rate (RHR) and blood samples (glycosylated hemoglobin, lipids and C-reactive protein) were obtained at baseline and after eight weeks. Mixed models were applied to evaluate associations between physical activity and health parameters. RESULTS: With ≤1 time per week as reference, exercising 2-3 times per week at baseline was associated with higher levels of VO2max. During follow-up, VO2max increased with 2.8 mL ∙ kg(-1)∙ min(-1) (95 % CI = 1.4, 4.3). Women had more favorable body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, RHR and lipid profile than men. Total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), RHR and diastolic blood pressure (dBP) were lower among participants who exercised 2-3 times per week or ≥4 times a week, compared with those with ≤1 time per week. Half of the participants reported increased daily PA during follow-up, with high intensity PA such as jogging by 8.6 min (SD 14.6) and 8.3 min (SD 18.2), among women and men, respectively. During follow-up dBP increased among men. Further, total cholesterol and LDL were reduced by 0.12 mmol/L and 0.13 mmol/L, respectively (95 % CI = -022, -0.01 and -0.22,-0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Exercise several times a week was associated with lower blood pressure and a favorable lipid status compared to lower weekly activity. During the 8-week follow-up of an employer initiated exercise program VO2max increased, while total cholesterol and LDL were reduced. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN13033050 . This study analysed the work ability of elderly construction workers. Forty male construction workers, 20 young (age < 33 yrs) and 20 senior (age>44 yrs) workers, were tested regarding aerobic power (VO2max) and muscle strength. The aerobic demand of a number of tasks in construction work was measured and compared with the workers' aerobic power. VO2max was higher for the young, and they performed better on most muscle strength tests. The measurements showed that about half of the senior workers had to use more than 30% of their maximum oxygen uptake on some tasks. In conclusion, because elderly construction workers decline in physical fitness, they are more exposed to overload when performing heavy manual work than are their younger peers. Increasing their individual fitness or adjusting their workload may be important for staying in the workforce for such workers. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: Construction workers must occasionally perform strenuous work tasks that may endanger their safety. This was more often the case for elderly workers investigated here. Elderly workers should therefore be particularly observant of their physical fitness, and should possibly train during leisure time to improve their fitness.

PURPOSE: We investigated the accuracy of the Moxus Modular Metabolic System (MOXUS) against the Douglas Bag Method (DBM) during high-intensity exercise, and whether the two methods agreed when detecting small changes in [Formula: see text] between two consecutive workloads ([Formula: see text]). METHODS: Twelve trained male runners performed two maximal incremental running tests while gas exchange was analyzed simultaneously by the two systems using a serial setup for four consecutive intervals of 30 s on each test. Comparisons between methods were performed for [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], fractions of expired O2 (FeO2) and CO2 (FeCO2) and [Formula: see text]. RESULTS: The MOXUS produced significant higher (mean ± SD, n = 54) readings for [Formula: see text] (80 ± 200 mL min(-1), p = 0.005) and [Formula: see text] (2.9 ± 4.2 L min(-1), p < 0.0001), but not FeO2 (-0.01 ± 0.09). Log-transformed 95 % limits of agreement for readings between methods were 94-110 % for [Formula: see text], 97-108 % for [Formula: see text] and 99-101 % for FeO2. [Formula: see text] for two consecutive measurements was not different between systems (120 ± 110 vs. 90 ± 190 mL min(-1) for MOXUS and DBM, respectively, p = 0.26), but agreement between methods was very low (r = 0.25, p = 0.12). DISCUSSION: Although it was tested during high-intensity exercise and short sampling intervals, the MOXUS performed within the acceptable range of accuracy reported for automated analyzers. Most of the differences between equipments were due to differences in [Formula: see text]. Detecting small changes in [Formula: see text] during an incremental test with small changes in workload, however, might be beyond the equipment's accuracy.

OBJECTIVE: Previously we have found increased carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) among shift workers compared to day workers in industry, and a decline in maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) in all 86 workers. METHODS: Utilizing all available measurements in 2018, 2021 and 2022, this study investigated associations between V̇O2max and measures of arterial stiffness. Using a mixed model approach, we analysed the cross-sectional association between all V̇O2max (outcome) and measures of arterial stiffness (covariates). RESULTS: We observed a significant association between V̇O2max and cfPWV of -1.59 (95%CI -3.03, -0.16), augmentation pressure (AP) and augmentation index (Aix) of -0.32 (95%CI -0.58, -0.06) and -0.12 (95%CI -0.23, -0.005), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We found a significant negative association between cardiorespiratory fitness and measures of arterial stiffness. The former and present results pose challenges for shift workers' future macro and microvascular health.

Smoke diving is physically demanding, and firefighters must therefore meet certain minimum physical requirements. The aim of this study was to compare the physiological demands of two fire fitness tests: a test of 8-min treadmill walking approved by the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority (NLIA) (a laboratory test) and a Canadian test consisting of 10 firefighting specific tasks carried out in sequence (an applied field test). If the Canadian field test is as physically demanding as the NLIA-approved laboratory test, it may be suitable for testing Norwegian firefighters. Twenty-two male professional firefighters were tested on separate days. In both tests, the subjects wore a complete firefighting outfit including a breathing apparatus. The test durations were 8 min (NLIA test) versus approximately 6 min (Canadian test). Neither the peak O2 uptake (VO2) of approximately 45 ml kg⁻¹ min⁻¹ nor the blood lactate concentration (BLC) at test termination ( ≈ 9 mmol L⁻¹) differed between the two tests. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE(CR-10)) was lower for the Canadian test than for the Norwegian test (5.2 ± 1.5 vs. 7.0 ± 2.0, respectively), and the exercise time at a high VO2 was also shorter. In conclusion, the Canadian test appeared to be almost as physically demanding as the NLIA-approved test, having equal peak VO2 and BLC, but shorter time at a high VO2 and shorter duration. It might thus be a suitable alternative to the NLIA test with some modifications. The advantage of the Canadian field test is the inclusion of specific firefighting-like tasks that are not part of the NLIA test. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: The physiological load from two firefighter fitness tests was compared. The demands were found to be similar, but the field test was of a shorter duration. With some modifications, the field test may be sufficiently demanding to be used as a fire fitness test for smoke divers in Norway.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine if maximal oxygen uptake (V˙O2max), resting heart rate (RHR), and self-reported leisure- time moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) changed over a 3-year follow-up (FU) among industrial workers. METHODS: We assessed cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) August 2018 and August 2021. The last 17-18 months coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from 86 participants were collected; demographics by questionnaire and cardiovascular outcomes from medical examination: V˙O2max, RHR, and fat mass (%). Workers reported on their leisure-time MVPA twice. To assess changes in health outcomes we applied a linear mixed model, adjusting for baseline (BL) age, sex, pack-years, shift work, and a 5-month plant shutdown. Further, we adjusted for actual age instead of BL age. RESULTS: V˙O2max decreased from 39.6 mL/kg/min at BL to 34.0 at FU, a reduction of 5.6 mL/kg/min (95%CI, -7.6, -3.7). Adjusted for actual age, the corresponding figure for V˙O2max was 5.4 mL/kg/min, (95%CI, -7.4, -3.4), an annual loss of 4.6%. RHR increased from 61.3 to 64.4 beats per minute (95%CI, 0.8, 5.4). Self-reported MVPA decreased by 43.9 min/week, (95%CI, -73.5, -14.4). CONCLUSIONS: We observed a decrease in V˙O2max, an increase in RHR and a decrease in self-reported MVPA, suggesting physical inactivity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in cardiovascular disease risk factors during a 3-year follow-up among 57 rotating shift workers and 29 day workers in industry. METHODS: We collected demographics by questionnaire, examined blood pressure, heart rate, pulse wave velocity, carotid media thickness, and maximal oxygen uptake. We assessed blood samples for determination of lipids, glycosylated hemoglobin, C-reactive protein, markers of inflammation, and particle concentrations/respirable dust. Baseline comparisons were analyzed using logistic regression (plaque) and linear regression for all other outcomes. We applied mixed models to assess differences in change in health outcomes between the shift workers and the day workers. RESULTS: At baseline, the adhesion molecules soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 and soluble P-selectin were elevated among the shift workers compared with that of the day workers. There was a significant difference in change in pulse wave velocity between shift workers (1.29-m/s increase) and day workers (0.11-m/s increase) over the 3-year follow-up. Respirable dust levels were below the Norwegian occupational exposure limit. CONCLUSIONS: Shift work in industry is associated with arterial stiffening reflecting increased risk for future cardiovascular disease. More uncertainly, we found some support for systemic inflammation.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic and infection control measures caused changes to daily life for most people. Heavy alcohol consumption and physical inactivity are two important behavioral risk factors for noncommunicable diseases worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its social distancing measures, home office policies, isolation, and quarantine requirements may have an impact on these factors. This three-wave longitudinal study aims to investigate if psychological distress and worries related to health and economy were associated with levels and changes in alcohol consumption and physical activity during the two first years of the COVID-19 pandemic in Norway. Methods: We used data collected in April 2020, January 2021, and January 2022 from an online longitudinal population-based survey. Alcohol consumption and physical activity status were assessed at all three measuring points via the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT-C) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF). COVID-19-related worries, home office/study, occupational situation, age, gender, children below 18 years living at home, and psychological distress (measured with the Symptom Checklist (SCL-10)) were included as independent variables in the model. A mixed model regression was used and presented with coefficients with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Analysis of data from 25,708 participants demonstrates that participants with substantial symptoms of psychological distress more often reported higher alcohol consumption (1.86 units/week, CI 1.48-2.24) and lower levels of physical activity [-1,043 Metabolic Equivalents of Task (METs) per week, CI -1,257;-828] at baseline. Working/studying from home (0.37 units/week, CI 0.24-0.50) and being male (1.57 units/week, CI 1.45-1.69) were associated with higher alcohol consumption. Working/studying from home (-536 METs/week, CI -609;-463), and being older than 70 years (-503 METs/week, CI -650;-355) were related to lower levels of physical activity. The differences in activity levels between those with the highest and lowest levels of psychological distress reduced over time (239 METs/week, CI 67;412), and similarly the differences in alcohol intake reduced over time among those having and not having children < 18 years (0.10 units/week, CI 0.01-0.19). Conclusion: These findings highlight the substantial increases in risks related to inactivity and alcohol consumption among those with high levels of psychological distress symptoms, and particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and increase the understanding of factors associated with worries and health behavior.

PURPOSE: To examine the performance of the MetaMax® I metabolic analyser of Cortex Biophysik, running a recent version of the software (MetaSoft v. 1.11.05), using the Douglas-bag method as reference. EXPERIMENTS: First, 182 measurements of the maximal O(2) uptake on school children were analysed both by a former version of the software (MetaMax Analysis) and by a recent version (MetaSoft). In further experiments, seven grown-up subjects of different fitness levels cycled for 5 min at constant powers between 50 and 350 W while the O(2) uptake was measured simultaneously by the MetaMax I and the Douglas-bag method during the last minute of altogether 39 exercises. RESULTS: The calculated maximal O(2) uptake of the 182 school children was on average 3% lower when the data were reanalysed by MetaSoft than when analysed by the former version of the software. There was in addition a 2% variation. In further experiments on grown-up subjects the O(2) uptake reported by the MetaMax I did not differ from that reported by the Douglas-bag system when data for all subjects were pooled, and the random error was 4%. However, the relationships differed slightly between the subjects (p = 0.005), and consequently the random error within each subject was 2-3%. The respiratory exchange ratio (R-value) reported by the MetaMax I differed systematically from that of the control method. However, a reliable R-value could be calculated from the instrument's raw data. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the MetaMax I running MetaSoft reports unbiased values of the O(2) uptake and with moderate random error.

The increased prevalence of non-communicable disease risk factors among children because of lack of physical activity is concerning. The Health Oriented Pedagogical Project was set up to combine learning activities and physical activity, thus reducing sedentariness during school time. The current study aimed to measure and describe the longitudinal and cross-sectional development of oxygen uptake and running performance in children at ages six and ten. The validity of the Andersen Test in predicting V̇O2peak in these age groups was also evaluated. Eighty-six children (53 boys, 33 girls) with complete datasets at ages 6 and 10 years were included in the longitudinal study, while 192 children (106 boys, 86 girls) were included in the cross-sectional analysis because they missed data from 1 year. Oxygen uptake was measured using a metabolic analyser and maximal treadmill running, while the distance covered during the AT determined running performance. Body mass, height, and waist-to-height ratios were recorded. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess the association between oxygen uptake and running performance. The cross-sectional results did not differ from the longitudinal data for anthropometrical data, oxygen uptake and running performance. Height, body mass and waist-to-height ratio did not differ between the sexes at ages six or ten. Boys had significantly higher peak oxygen uptake than girls at 6 years of age, irrespective of how oxygen uptake was expressed. Allometric scaling of oxygen uptake revealed differences between sexes at both ages. Longitudinal running performance increased in both sexes from 6 to 10 years. Boys ran significantly longer only at age ten. The association between oxygen uptake and running performance varied according to how the oxygen uptake was expressed and with sex and age. Ten-year-old girls had the highest correlations in the longitudinal investigation, from r 2 = 0.48 (fV̇O2peak) to 0.65 (rV̇O2peak) between AT and V̇O2peak. The AT was found to be as valid as the 20-m shuttle run test in estimating peak oxygen uptake, with a random measurement error of approximately 11% of mean values.
