RESUMO

The Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act provides a pathway for regulatory approval of generic drugs and the associated patent challenge. This article reviews strategic considerations during the patent litigation and injunction phases. Considerations during the initial patent litigation phase include when and whether to exchange a paragraph k application and the listing and exchange of patent information during the volley phase.

RESUMO

Now in its 23rd and 10th years, respectively, the Antibody Engineering and Antibody Therapeutics conferences are the Annual Meeting of The Antibody Society. The scientific program covers the full spectrum of challenges in antibody research and development from basic science through clinical development. In this preview of the conferences, the chairs provide their thoughts on sessions that will allow participants to track emerging trends in (1) the development of next-generation immunomodulatory antibodies; (2) the complexity of the environment in which antibodies must function; (3) antibody-targeted central nervous system (CNS) therapies that cross the blood brain barrier; (4) the extension of antibody half-life for improved efficacy and pharmacokinetics (PK)/pharmacodynamics (PD); and (5) the application of next generation DNA sequencing to accelerate antibody research. A pre-conference workshop on Sunday, December 2, 2012 will update participants on recent intellectual property (IP) law changes that affect antibody research, including biosimilar legislation, the America Invents Act and recent court cases. Keynote presentations will be given by Andreas Plückthun (University of Zürich), who will speak on engineering receptor ligands with powerful cellular responses; Gregory Friberg (Amgen Inc.), who will provide clinical updates of bispecific antibodies; James D. Marks (University of California, San Francisco), who will discuss a systems approach to generating tumor targeting antibodies; Dario Neri (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich), who will speak about delivering immune modulators at the sites of disease; William M. Pardridge (University of California, Los Angeles), who will discuss delivery across the blood-brain barrier; and Peter Senter (Seattle Genetics, Inc.), who will present his vision for the future of antibody-drug conjugates. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study conditions of living, participation and diagnostic perceptions in a national population of adult persons with spinal muscular atrophy type 2 (SMA 2). METHODS: A mixed method design combining cross-sectional survey data with personal narratives was chosen. Twenty-nine of 37 patients with SMA 2 aged >or=18 years participated in a semi-structured questionnaire survey and three were selected for in-depth journalistic interviews. Socioeconomic data, activities and personal significance of problems were calculated. Journalistic stories were analysed for constructs of personal diagnostic qualities. RESULTS: Everyone was actively directing their life despite being heavily dependent. Deterioration of physical abilities was a major concern for women. Seventy-six per cent were single, but stated their quality of life as fine. Narratives of living with SMA 2 were associated with positive characteristics, as opposed to the medical diagnostic wording. CONCLUSION: Female coping needs more research. Narrative method complements medical knowledge.

RESUMO

The knowledge of adult life with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is sparse. The purpose of this study was to review existing information and describe body functional, social participatory and quality of life profiles of the ordinary adult Danish DMD patient. Sixty-five study subjects aged 18-42 years were included in a cross-sectional survey based on data from a semi-structured questionnaire comprising 197 items. The ordinary adult DMD patient states his quality of life as excellent; he is worried neither about his disease nor about the future. His assessment of income, hours of personal assistance, housing, years spent in school and ability to participate in desired activities are positive. Despite heavy immobilization, he is still capable of functioning in a variety of activities that are associated with normal life. He lacks qualifying education and he is in painful need of a love life. The frequency of pains is surprisingly high; nearly 40% has pains daily. The nature, magnitude, consequence and possible cure of these reported pains must be scrutinized. Parents and professionals, paediatricians not the least, must anticipate in all measures taken that the DMD boy grows up to manhood and will need competences for adult social life in all respects.

RESUMO

We have built a coupled master oscillator and a slave oscillator optical parametric oscillator (OPO) system that provides single-frequency, pulsed radiation in the midwave infrared (MWIR). The direct-diode-pumped master OPO provided narrow-band (<6-MHz, instrument-limited), tunable MWIR cw radiation that was used to seed a higher-peak-power pulsed slave OPO. When seeded directly at the MWIR idler, the pulsed output of the slave OPO was constrained to oscillate on a single longitudinal mode even though the slave OPO is pumped by a multilongitudinal-mode laser source. The linewidth of the pulsed output has been measured to be <220 MHz (instrument limited), which is well suited for coherent differential absorption lidar applications.
