PURPOSE: High altitude results in lower barometric pressure and hence partial pressure of O2 decrease can lead to several molecular and cellular changes, such as generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Electron Paramagnetic Resonance technique was adopted in the field, to evaluate the effects of acute and sub-acute hypobaric hypoxia (HH) on ROS production by micro-invasive method. Biological biomarkers, indicators of oxidative stress, renal function and inflammation were investigated too. METHODS: Fourteen lowlander subjects (mean age 27.3 ± 5.9 years) were exposed to HH at 3269 m s.l. ROS production, related oxidative damage to cellular components, systemic inflammatory response and renal function were determined through blood and urine profile performed at 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, and 14th days during sojourn. RESULTS: Kinetics of changes during HH exposition showed out significant (range p < 0.05-0.0001) increases that at max corresponds to 38% for ROS production rate, 140% for protein carbonyl, 44% for lipid peroxidation, 42% for DNA damage, 200% for inflammatory cytokines and modifications in renal function (assessed by neopterin concentration: 48%). Conversely, antioxidant capacity significantly (p < 0.0001) decreased - 17% at max. CONCLUSION: This 14 days in-field study describes changes of oxidative-stress biomarkers during HH exposure in lowlanders. The results show an overproduction of ROS and consequent oxidative damage to protein, lipids and DNA with a decrease in antioxidant capacity and the involvement of inflammatory status and a transient renal dysfunction. Exposure at high altitude induces a hypoxic condition during acute and sub-acute phases accompanied by molecular adaptation mechanism indicating acclimatization.

RESUMO

During the last decade, there has been a growing interest in understanding the fate of food during digestion in the gastrointestinal tract in order to strengthen the possible effects of food on human health. Ideally, food digestion should be studied in vivo on humans but this is not always ethically and financially possible. Therefore simple static in vitro digestion models mimicking the gastrointestinal tract have been proposed as alternatives to in vivo experiments but these models are quite basic and hardly recreate the complexity of the digestive tract. In contrast, dynamic models that allow pH regulation, flow of the food and injection in real time of digestive enzymes in the different compartments of the gastrointestinal tract are more promising to accurately mimic the digestive process. Most of the systems developed so far have been compared for their performances to in vivo data obtained on animals and/or humans. The objective of this article is to review the validation towards in vivo data of some of the dynamic digestion systems currently available in order to determine what aspects of food digestion they are able to mimic. Eight dynamic digestion systems are presented as well as their validation towards in vivo data. Advantages and limits of each simulator is discussed. This is the result of a cooperative international effort made by some of the scientists involved in Infogest, an international network on food digestion.

Our study investigated the effects of hypoxia on visuospatial attention processing during preparation for a single/double-choice motor response. ERPs were recorded in two sessions in which participants breathed either ambient-air or oxygen-impoverished air. During each session, participants performed four cue-target attention orienting and/or alerting tasks. Replicating the classic findings of valid visuospatial attentional orienting modulation, ERPs to pre-target cues elicited both an Anterior directing attention negativity (ADAN)/CNV and a posterior Late directing attention positivity (LDAP)/TP, which in ambient air were larger for attention orienting than for alerting. Hypoxia increased the amplitude of both these potentials in the spatial orienting conditions for the upper visual hemifield, while, for the lower hemifield, it increased ADAN/CNV, but decreased LDAP/TP for the same attention conditions. To these ERP changes corresponded compensatory enhanced activation of right anterior cingulate cortex, left superior parietal lobule and frontal gyrus, as well as detrimental effects of hypoxia on behavioral overt performance. Together, these findings reveal for the first time, to our knowledge, that (1) these reversed alterations of the activation patterns during the time between cue and target occur at a larger extent in hypoxia than in air, and (2) acute normobaric hypoxia alters visuospatial attention orienting shifting in space.

Antibiotic-induced dysbiosis of the microbial community has been associated with several gastrointestinal symptoms. The impact of repeated administration of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (CNCM-I-4798) (formerly known as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG), Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii (CNCM-I-1079) and their combination (associated in Smebiocta/Smectaflora Protect®) in supporting recovery of gut microbiota functionality and composition during and following amoxicillin:clavulanic acid administration was evaluated in vitro. Antibiotic dosage negatively affected SCFA production, coinciding with detrimental effects on Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Bifidobacterium spp. in the simulated proximal colon, while Akkermansia muciniphila was significantly reduced in the distal colon. L. rhamnosus GG and S. boulardii were able to thrive in both colon regions upon dosing, with S. boulardii even showing protective effects on the survival of L. rhamnosus GG during antibiotic administration. The impact of the probiotic strains on microbiome recovery revealed that supplementation with L. rhamnosus GG and/or S. boulardii resulted in a stimulating effect on the most abundant bacterial groups within the bacterial community of each donor. For one of the donors tested, co-dosing of L. rhamnosus GG and S. boulardii resulted in superior short-chain fatty acid recovery accompanied by a stronger increase in abundance of Bifidobacteriaceae. Overall, the current study provides first evidence that combined supplementation of L. rhamnosus GG and S. boulardii might be an interesting candidate in limiting detrimental effects of amoxicillin:clavulanic acid on the human gut microbiome, though further studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Hydrogen sulfide emission in sewers is associated with toxicity, corrosion, odour nuisance and high costs. In this study, a new method to inhibit sulfide generation by means of formaldehyde and its derivatives has been evaluated under anaerobic conditions. The possible impact of formaldehyde on an activated sludge system and an appraisal of the economic aspects are presented as well. A dosage of 19 mg L(-1) formaldehyde resulted in a decrease of the sulfide production of 90%. Dosing of 32 mg L(-1) paraformaldehyde and addition of 111 mg L(-1) ureaformaldehyde were not sufficient to inhibit the sulfide generation in sewage to the same extent. The impacts of 19 mg L(-1) formaldehyde on activated sludge, in terms of COD removal, nitrification rate and oxygen uptake rates, were negligible. This suggests that formaldehyde dosage is a feasible technique to abate the sulfide problem in sewers.

Short-term colonic in vitro batch incubations were performed to elucidate the possible synergistic effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (CNCM-I-4798) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii (CNCM-I-1079) (associated in Smebiocta/Smectaflora Protect®) on the colonic microbial fermentation process, as well as their antipathogenic activity against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (LMG2092) (ETEC). These incubations adequately simulate the native microbiota and environmental conditions of the proximal colon of both adult and toddler donors, including the colonic mucosal layer. Results indicated that both strains were capable of growing together without showing antagonistic effects. Co-cultivation of both strains resulted in increased butyrate (stimulated by L. rhamnosus GG), propionate (stimulated by S. boulardii), and ethanol (produced by S. boulardii) production compared to the control incubations, revealing the additive effect of both strains. After inoculation of ETEC under simulated dysbiotic conditions, a 40 and 46% reduction in the concentration of ETEC was observed upon addition of both strains during the experiments with the adult and toddler donor, respectively. Furthermore, ETEC toxin levels decreased upon S. boulardii inoculation, probably due to proteolytic activity of this strain, with a synergistic effect being observed upon co-cultivation of L. rhamnosus GG and S. boulardii resulting in a reduction of 57 and 46% for the adult and toddler donor, respectively. Altogether, the results suggest that both probiotics together may help microbiota functionality, in both adults and toddlers and under healthy or impaired conditions, which could be of great interest when the colonic microbiota is dysbiotic and therefore sensitive to pathogenic invasion such as during antibiotic treatment.

Scaphoideus titanus is the insect vector of flavescence dorée (FD), a yellow disease of grapevines. Observations on adult females and nymphs of S. titanus showed that this insect is associated with a complex microbial community. Ultrastructural analysis showed that the fat body, salivary glands and ovary of the insect harbour microorganisms showing the brush-like structure typically observed in the genus Cardinium. In particular, it has been shown that these symbiotic bacteria are present both in the follicular cells and in the eggs. In addition, cells resembling bacteriocytes, harbouring numerous Cardinium symbionts in the cytoplasm, were observed in the apical portion of the ovary in adult females. These cells are likely responsible for bacterial transmission to the ovary. Optical microscopy showed that the fat body harbours an enormous population of yeast-like symbionts (YLSs). Ultrastructural observations showed that these symbionts are enclosed within specialized cells of the fat body and are also present in the ovary, where they are found in both the follicular cells and the eggs. There is thus evidence that both Cardinium and the YLSs are transovarially transmitted to the offspring. To our knowledge, S. titanus is the sole insect known to transmit two different kinds of symbionts to the eggs, a prokaryote and an eukaryote. Gene sequence analysis and in situ hybridization led to the identification of YLSs as members of the class Sordariomycetes (=Pyrenomycetes). Finally, ultrastructural observation of the midgut content revealed the presence, in both adult females and nymphs, of a complex microbial community, which include a phytoplasma-like microorganism, likely the agent of FD.

The possibility to inhibit sulfide generation by formaldehyde and its derivatives (paraformaldehyde and urea formaldehyde) has been evaluated under anaerobic conditions. The impact of formaldehyde on an activated sludge system and an appraisal of the economic aspects are also presented. The optimum dosage to inhibit sulfide generation in sewage was 12-19 mg L(-1) formaldehyde. The dosages of 32 mg L(-1) paraformaldehyde or 100 mg L(-1) urea formaldehyde were not capable of inhibiting sulfide generation in sewage. The impact of 19 mg L(-1) formaldehyde on activated sludge system was negligible in terms of COD removal, nitrification rate and oxygen uptake rate.

An ultrastructural study of the novel symbiont Cardinium sp. was performed with particular attention to the description of the structure and organization of highly elaborated cytoplasmic complexes containing microtubule-like elements (MLC). Three major components were observed. The first was a system of microtubule-like elements (ML) arranged in parallel array extending from the plasma membrane into the cytosol of the bacterium. The second, an fibrous electrondense plaque (FEP), approximately 8 nm thick, located 7.5 nm away from the plasma membrane and parallel to it. The third component, not previously reported, was described for the first time in this paper. This consisted of a set of regularly distributed 8 nm electron-dense structures (ES), with a center-to-center spacing of about 12 nm, adhering to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane. Often, the ES created a close connection between the plasma membrane and the outer membrane, so that in this area they became straight and stiff. The first and second component of these structures are compared to previously described microtubules and microfilaments.

Cerebral palsy (CP), one of the most common neurological disorders in childhood, features affected individual's motor skills and muscle actions. This results in elevated heart rate and rate of oxygen uptake during sub-maximal exercise, thus indicating a mean energy expenditure higher than healthy subjects. Rehabilitation, currently involving also robot-based devices, may have an impact also on these aspects. In this study, an ecological setting has been proposed to evaluate the energy expenditure of 4 children with CP before and after a robot-assisted gait training. Even if the small sample size makes it difficult to give general indications, results presented here are promising. Indeed, children showed an increasing trend of the energy expenditure per minute and a decreasing trend of the energy expenditure per step, in accordance to the control group. These data suggest a metabolic benefit of the treatment that may increase the locomotion efficiency of disabled children.

The lower peak lactate accumulation in blood ([La(b)]p) at altitude may be associated with a reduced maximal glycolytic flux. Based on certain assumptions, the latter can be indirectly evaluated in vivo, during short supramaximal exercises, by measuring the maximal rate of lactate accumulation in blood (delta [La(b)]max). delta [La(b)]max was determined on six white subjects at sea level (SL1), after approximately 1 wk (Alt1) and 4 wk (Alt2) of a 35-day sojourn at 5,050 m, and 1 wk after return to sea level (SL2). The subjects performed exercises of increasing duration (5, 15, 25, 35, 45 s or until exhaustion) on a bicycle ergometer at loads = 200% of the individual Wmax. The latter was previously determined in each condition as the greatest work rate that could be sustained for 2-4 min during an incremental exercise. Net [La(b)] accumulation (delta [La(b)]) was measured after each exercise bout. delta [La(b)] resulted to be linearly related to exercise duration. The slopes of the individual delta [La(b)] vs. exercise duration lines were taken as delta [La(b)]max. Exhaustion times were approximately 30-45 s in all conditions. [La(b)]p (in mM) during recovery after the exhaustive load was higher at SL1 (10.22 +/- 1.09; means +/- SD) than at Alt1 (5.08 +/- 0.82), Alt2 (8.13 +/- 2.67), and SL2 (8.18 +/- 1.43). delta [La(b)]max was lower at Alt1 (0.09 +/- 0.02) and at Alt2 (0.17 +/- 0.05) than at SL1 (0.25 +/- 0.05) and SL2 (0.23 +/- 0.06). Peak blood lactate ([Labl]peak) and blood lactate concentration ([Labl]) vs. workload (W) relationships during acclimatization to altitude and in the deacclimatization were evaluated in 10 Caucasian lowlanders at sea level (SL0); after approximately 1 wk (Alt1wk), 3 wk (Alt3wk), and 5 wk (Alt5wk) at 5,050 m; and weekly during the first 5 wk after return to sea level (SL1wk-SL5wk). Incremental bicycle ergometer exercises (30 W added every 4 min up to exhaustion) were performed. At Alt1wk and at Alt5wk, the experiments were repeated in hypobaric normoxia (Alt1wk-O2 and Alt5wk-O2). [Labl] was determined at rest and during the last approximately 30 s of each W. [Labl]peak was taken as the highest [Labl] during recovery. Acid-base status (pH and concentration of HCO-3 in arterialized capillary blood) was determined at rest. Mean [Labl]peak values were 11.5 (SL0), 8.0 (Alt1wk), 6.4 (Alt3wk), 6.3 (Alt5wk), 8.0 (SL1wk), 9.4 (SL2wk), 10.8 (SL3wk), 11.3 (SL4wk), and 11.6 (SL5wk) mM. At Alt1wk-O2 and Alt5wk-O2, peak W increased, compared with Alt1wk and Alt5wk, whereas no changes were observed for [Labl]peak. [Labl] vs. W was shifted to the left (i.e., higher [Labl] values were found for the same W) at Alt1wk compared with SL0 and partially shifted back to the right (i.e., lower [Labl] values were found for the same W) at Alt3wk and Alt5wk. At Alt1wk-O2 and Alt5wk-O2, [Labl] vs. W values were superimposed on that at SL0. At SL1wk-SL5wk, [Labl] vs. W values were shifted to the right compared with that at SL0. At Alt1wk, a condition of respiratory alkalosis was found, which was only partially compensated for during acclimatization. At SL1wk, the acid-base status was back to normal. We conclude that 1) the reduced [Labl]peak at altitude is still present for 2-3 wk after return from altitude; is not attributable to reduced peak W nor to hypoxia per se, nor to a reduced buffer capacity; alternatively, it could be related to some central determinants of fatigue. 2) The [Labl] vs. W leftward shift at altitude was due to hypoxia per se. 3) The factor(s) responsible for the [Labl] vs. W partial rightward shift during acclimatization could still be effective during the first weeks after return to sea level.

The skin is a probable route of incorporation of uranium by percutaneous absorption. The changes in epidermal thickness and their effect on skin permeability after uranium exposure are reported herein. Two experiments (A and B) were performed in Wistar rats weighing 60 g. In experiment A the animals were exposed to U3O8 (0.012 g d(-1)) in 30 daily topical applications. In experiment B the animals were treated as in experiment A, followed by a period of non-exposure of 60 d. Samples of the treated area of skin were taken for histologic studies and for the study of the skin permeability. The epidermal thickness was measured on the histological sections. Epidermis was thinner in experimental than in control animals in both experiments. The values in the control groups were 41.05 +/- 14.03 microm (A) and 38.92 +/- 16.50 microm (B) and 21.35 +/- 10.29 microm (A) and 24.06 +/- 16.50 microm (B) in the experimental groups, the differences being statistically significant. Skin permeability was measured placing skin samples in a diffusion cell, in which the upper compartment was filled with a staining solution. The determinations were made with a spectrophotometer. The results revealed that the skin permeability in both experimental groups was higher than in the respective controls, 65% in experiment A and 77% in experiment B. The results revealed that a long term uranium exposure leads to an epidermal atrophy which in turn results in an increased permeability of the skin.

As these are processes directly involved in bone growth the aim of this paper is to present a biometric study of bone growth--tibiae and mandibles of rats intoxicated with uranium. Wistar ratios weighing 60-80 g were used as follows, a) one intraperitoneal injection (IPI, 2 mg/Kg of body weight)) of uranyl nitrate; b) 30 daily applications on the dorsal skin of aliquots of a mixture of U308, concentrated at 2% and at 4%--percutaneous absorption(PA)-. Tibia and mandible length were smaller in both experimental groups than in their respective controls. Some of the mandibular parameters were lower in intoxicated animals than their controls which in turn results in the alteration of the mandibular shape. We conclude that impairment in bone growth can be achieved by uranium intoxication.

RESUMO

The prevalence of obesity is continuously growing and has reached epidemic proportions. It is clear that current methods to combat obesity are not effective enough to reduce the problem. Therefore, further investigation is needed to develop new strategies. Recent research pointed out a potential role of the microbial community associated to the human host in controlling and influencing the energy homeostasis. According to the concept of Gastrointestinal Resource Management, this microbiota and its metabolic potential can be steered with the aim of improving host health. This review therefore focuses on the modulation of the intestinal microbiota through prebiotics with the aim to control several aspects of metabolic homeostasis. In a first part, the importance of host-microbe cross-talk at the intestinal epithelium is discussed. Yet, energy metabolism, which includes both lipid and glucose metabolism, is also regulated by several key organs including the adipose tissue, brain, liver, muscles, pancreas and gut. Therefore, in a second part, we will discuss the microbial factors that are involved in the communication between these different tissues, and their potential management. Finally, we will give some future prospects of the use of prebiotics in an individualised treatment of metabolic disorders.

In this work, chocolate has been evaluated as a potential protective carrier for oral delivery of a microencapsulated mixture of Lactobacillus helveticus CNCM I-1722 and Bifidobacterium longum CNCM I-3470. A sequential in vitro setup was used to evaluate the protection of the probiotics during passage through the stomach and small intestine, when embedded in dark and milk chocolate or liquid milk. Both chocolates offered superior protection (91% and 80% survival in milk chocolate for L. helveticus and B. longum, respectively compared to 20% and 31% found in milk). To simulate long-term administration, the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME) was used. Plate counts, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis and quantitative PCR showed that the two probiotics successfully reached the simulated colon compartments. This led to an increase in lactobacilli and bifidobacteria counts and the appearance of additional species in the fingerprints. These data indicate that the coating of the probiotics in chocolate is an excellent solution to protect them from environmental stress conditions and for optimal delivery. The simulation with our gastrointestinal model showed that the formulation of a probiotic strain in a specific food matrix could offer superior protection for the delivery of the bacterium into the colon. The chocolate example could act as a trigger for new research to identify new balanced matrices.

The use of prebiotics is a possible strategy to manage and steer the complex gut microbial community towards a health-promoting composition (Gastrointestinal Resource Management). In this study, the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem was used to investigate the effects of two commercially-available plant polysaccharide supplements on the structure, composition and metabolism of an in vitro cultured colon microbial community. Microbial analyses showed both a bifidogenic (up to +1.3 log cfu/mL) and a lactobacillogenic (up to +0.9 log cfu/mL) effect during treatment with the dietary supplements. Quantitative PCR confirmed that the increase of Bifidobacteria spp. was statistically significant (P<0.05) in all of the colon compartments and showed a significant increase of the bacteroides-prevotella group concentration (+0.6 log cells/ml) in the compartment simulating the proximal colon. Denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis analyses and a relative ecological interpretation, in combination with sugar and short-chain fatty acids quantification, provided evidence of a positive effect of both the tested products. Overall, the treatment period was associated with (i) good and selective fermentability of the polysaccharide supplements along the entire colon; (ii) positive and selective bifidogenic effect; (iii) the possibility of enhancing species belonging to Bacteroidetes, a phylum recently associated with body weight management.

Arabinoxylan-oligosaccharides (AXOS) are a recently newly discovered class of candidate prebiotics as - depending on their structure - they are fermented in different regions of gastrointestinal tract. This can have an impact on the protein/carbohydrate fermentation balance in the large intestine and, thus, affect the generation of potentially toxic metabolites in the colon originating from proteolytic activity. In this study, we screened different AXOS preparations for their impact on the in vitro intestinal fermentation activity and microbial community structure. Short-term fermentation experiments with AXOS with an average degree of polymerization (avDP) of 29 allowed part of the oligosaccharides to reach the distal colon, and decreased the concentration of proteolytic markers, whereas AXOS with lower avDP were primarily fermented in the proximal colon. Additionally, prolonged supplementation of AXOS with avDP 29 to the Simulator of Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME) reactor decreased levels of the toxic proteolytic markers phenol and p-cresol in the two distal colon compartments and increased concentrations of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) in all colon vessels (25-48%). Denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis indicated that AXOS supplementation only slightly modified the total microbial community, implying that the observed effects on fermentation markers are mainly caused by changes in fermentation activity. Finally, specific quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis showed that AXOS supplementation significantly increased the amount of health-promoting lactobacilli as well as of Bacteroides-Prevotella and Clostridium coccoides-Eubacterium rectale groups. These data allow concluding that AXOS are promising candidates to modulate the microbial metabolism in the distal colon.

There have been many studies on the effects of isokinetic exercise on muscle performance in training and rehabilitative programmes. On the other hand, the cardiovascular and metabolic responses elicited by this type of exercise have been poorly investigated. This study was specifically designed to describe the relationships, if any, between metabolic and cardiorespiratory responses and power output during maximal intermittent knee isokinetic exercise when a steady state is reached. A group of 18 healthy subjects (10 men and 8 women, age range 25-30 years) were requested to perform at maximal concentric isokinetic knee extensions/flexions 60 degrees. s(-1) and 180 degrees. s(-1) for 5 min, with a 5-s pause interposed between consecutive repetitions. The power output (W) was calculated; before and during the tasks heart rate (f(c)) and arterial blood pressure (AP(a)) were continuously monitored. Pulmonary ventilation (V(E)) and oxygen uptake (VO(2)) were measured at the 4th and at the 5th min of exercise and blood lactate concentration at rest and at the 3rd min of recovery. From the 4th to the 5th min only a slight decrease in W was observed, both at 60 degrees. s(-1) and 180 degrees. s(-1). The VO(2), V(E), f(c) and AP(a) showed similar values in the last 2 min of exercise, suggesting that a steady state had been reached. The VO(2) increased linearly as a function of +W, showing a significantly steeper slope at 60 degrees. s(-1) than at 180 degrees. s(-1). The f(c), in spite of a large interindividual variation, was linearly related to metabolic demand, and was not affected by angular velocity. Systolic and diastolic AP(a) were not related either to VO(2) or to angular velocity. In conclusion it would appear that the metabolic response to maximal intermittent knee isokinetic exercise resembles that of dynamic exercise. Conversely, the cardiocirculatory responses would seem to reflect a relevant role of the isometric postural component, the importance of which should be carefully evaluated in each subject.

Anecdotal observations suggest that the reduction in peak lactate accumulation in blood ([La]b peak) after exhausting exercise, in chronic hypoxia vs. normoxia, may be related to the duration of the exercise protocol, being less pronounced after short supramaximal exercise than after incremental exercise (IE) lasting several minutes. To test this hypothesis, six healthy male Caucasians (age 36.8 +/- 7.3, X +/- SD) underwent three exercise protocols on a cycle ergometer, at sea level (SL) and after 21 +/- 10 days at 5050 m altitude (ALT): (1) 10 s, (2) 30 s 'all out' exercise and (3) IE leading to exhaustion in approximately 20-25 min. 'Average' power output (P) was calculated for 10 or 30 s 'all out'; maximal power output (Pmax) was determined for IE. Lactate concentration in arterialized capillary blood ([La]b) was measured at rest and at different times during recovery; the highest [La]b during recovery was taken as [La]b peak. No significant differences in P were observed between SL and ALT, for either 10 or 30 s 'all out' exercise; Pmax during IE was significantly lower at ALT than at SL. [La]b peak after 10 s 'all out' was unaffected by chronic hypoxia (7.0 +/- 0.9 at ALT vs. 6.3 +/- 1.8 mmol x L(-1) at SL). After 30 s 'all out' the [La]b peak decrease, at ALT (10.6 +/- 0.6 mmol x L(-1)) vs. SL (12.9 +/- 1.4 mmol x L(-1)), was only approximately 50% of that observed for IE (6.7 +/- 1.6 mmol x L(-1) vs. 11.3 +/- 2.8 mmol x L(-1)). Muscle power output and blood lactate accumulation during short supramaximal exercise are substantially unaffected by chronic hypoxia.
