RESUMO

Fitmore stem is a rectangular, tapered, short, cementless stem. A characteristic feature of this stem is that it provides rotational stability due to the high medullary occupancy achieved by its rectangular cross-section and thick antero- posterior width. We aimed to investigate the differences in periprosthetic bone remodelling between a rectangular- tapered short stem and a short tapered-wedge stem. Eighty patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty using a rectangular-tapered short stem (Fitmore) or a short tapered-wedge stem (Tri-Lock BPS) were enrolled in this study. Bone mineral densities (BMDs) in the seven Gruen zones were evaluated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline, and at 6 and 24 months postoperatively. Peri-prosthetic BMD and clinical factors were assessed and compared. In addition, correlations between periprosthetic BMD changes and stem anteversion error were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient in the two groups. A significantly better postoperative periprosthetic BMD change was found in zones 1 and 7 in the rectangular-tapered group. Additionally, no significant correlation was observed between stem anteversion error and periprosthetic BMD changes in the rectangular-tapered groups. However, in the tapered-wedge group, there were significant negative correlations between the stem anteversion error and BMD changes at 6 months and 24 months in zones 1 and 7. In the rectangular-tapered group, a significantly better postoperative periprosthetic BMD change was found particularly in the region proximal to the stem. Rectangular-tapered short stem can be more resistant to rotation due to higher medullary occupancy and may lead to better periprosthetic BMD than the tapered-wedge short stem, especially in the proximal region of the stem.

RESUMO

A series of experiments investigated genetically diverse strains of Beauveria bassiana (Bb) isolated from coffee berry borer (CBB). Objectives included assessment of their biocontrol potential, particularly in comparison to Bb commercial strain GHA currently applied for CBB control, and identification of various attributes potentially contributing to their comparatively greater epizootic potential in CBB populations. Bioassays identified one strain from Hawai'i Island and one from Puerto Rico with virulence greater than GHA based on equal weights of unformulated conidial powder (CP); however, the greater potency of the CPs was ultimately explained by their 2.4-fold greater conidial densities (ca. 3.1 vs 1.3 × 1011 viable conidia/g CP). Density was explained, in large part, by conidial size, but not by size alone. Bb-inoculated CBB held on moist filter paper were more susceptible to infection than those held on cooked green coffee bean (CGCB). A Bb strain representative of the most common Hawaiian haplotype produced 2.6x more conidia after death of CGCB-held beetles than GHA (19.1 vs 7.3 x106 conidia/cadaver). Following host death, no difference was observed in time to emergence and initial conidial production by GHA and a selected group of Hawaiian strains; however, mass sporulation was initiated within 2 days by strain GHA compared to 4-5 days by the Hawaiian strains. In a preliminary evaluation of conidial mass-production potential, CP yields of several strains were comparable to GHA on a weight basis and significantly greater than GHA on a conidial basis (1.3-1.6 vs 0.7 × 1013 viable conidia/kg barley substrate).

RESUMO

AIM: To differentiate between infectious and non-infectious diseases occurring in immunocompromised patients without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: HRCT images of 555 patients with chest complications were reviewed retrospectively. Infectious diseases (n=341) included bacterial pneumonia (n=123), fungal infection (n=80), septic emboli (n=11), tuberculosis (n=15), pneumocystis pneumonia (n=101), and cytomegalovirus pneumonia (n=11), while non-infectious diseases (n=214) included drug toxicity (n=84), infiltration of underlying diseases (n=83), idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (n=34), diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (n=8), and pulmonary oedema (n=5). Lung parenchymal abnormalities were compared between the two groups using the χ2 test and multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The χ2 test results showed significant differences in many HRCT findings between the two groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis results indicated the presence of nodules with a halo and the absence of interlobular septal (ILS) thickening were the significant indicators that could differentiate infectious from non-infectious diseases. ILS thickening was generally less frequent among most infectious diseases and more frequent among most non-infectious diseases, with a good odds ratio (7.887, p<0.001). The sensitivity and accuracy for infectious diseases in the absence of ILS thickening were better (70% and 73%, respectively) than those of nodules with a halo (19% and 48%, respectively), while the specificity in the nodules with a halo was better (93%) than that of ILS thickening (78%). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of nodules with a halo or the absence of ILS thickening tends to suggest infectious disease. Specifically, ILS thickening seems to be a more reliable indicator.

RESUMO

To understand the nature of the brightest γ-ray binary system LS 5039, hard x-ray data of the object, taken with the Suzaku and NuSTAR observatories in 2007 and 2016, respectively, were analyzed. The two data sets jointly gave tentative evidence for a hard x-ray periodicity, with a period of ∼9 s and a period increase rate by ∼3×10^{-10} s s^{-1}. Therefore, the compact object in LS 5039 is inferred to be a rotating neutron star, rather than a black hole. Furthermore, several lines of arguments suggest that this object has a magnetic field of several times ∼10^{10} T, two orders of magnitude higher than those of typical neutron stars. The object is hence suggested to be a magnetar, which would be the first to be found in a binary. The results also suggest that the highly efficient particle acceleration process, known to be operating in LS 5039, emerges through interactions between dense stellar winds from the massive primary star, and ultrastrong magnetic fields of the magnetar.

RESUMO

During a winter thunderstorm on 24 November 2017, a strong burst of gamma rays with energies up to ∼10 MeV was detected coincident with a lightning discharge, by scintillation detectors installed at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station at sea level in Japan. The burst had a subsecond duration, which is suggestive of photoneutron production. The leading part of the burst was resolved into four intense gamma-ray bunches, each coincident with a low-frequency radio pulse. These bunches were separated by 0.7-1.5 ms, with a duration of ≪1 ms each. Thus, the present burst may be considered as a "downward" terrestrial gamma-ray flash (TGF), which is analogous to upgoing TGFs observed from space. Although the scintillation detectors were heavily saturated by these bunches, the total dose associated with them was successfully measured by ionization chambers, employed by nine monitoring posts surrounding the power plant. From this information and Monte Carlo simulations, the present downward TGF is suggested to have taken place at an altitude of 2500±500 m, involving 8_{-4}^{+8}×10^{18} avalanche electrons with energies above 1 MeV. This number is comparable to those in upgoing TGFs.

RESUMO

Stress-related psychopathology is highly prevalent among elderly individuals and is associated with detrimental effects on mood, appetite and cognition. Conversely, under certain circumstances repeated mild-to-moderate stressors have been shown to enhance cognitive performance in rodents and exert stress-inoculating effects in humans. As most stress-related favorable outcomes have been reported in adolescence and young-adulthood, this apparent disparity could result from fundamental differences in how aging organisms respond to stress. Furthermore, given prominent age-related alterations in sex hormones, the effect of chronic stress in aging females remains a highly relevant yet little studied issue. In the present study, female C57BL/6 mice aged 3 (young-adult) and 20-23 (old) months were subjected to 8 weeks of chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). Behavioral outcomes were measured during the last 3 weeks of the CUS protocol, followed by brain dissection for histological and molecular end points. We found that in young-adult female mice, CUS resulted in decreased anxiety-like behavior and enhanced cognitive performance, whereas in old female mice it led to weight loss, dysregulated locomotion and memory impairment. These phenotypes were paralleled by differential changes in the expression of hypothalamic insulin and melanocortin-4 receptors and were consistent with an age-dependent reduction in the dynamic range of stress-related changes in the hippocampal transcriptome. Supported by an integrated microRNA (miRNA)-mRNA expression analysis, the present study proposes that, when confronted with ongoing stress, neuroprotective mechanisms involving the upregulation of neurogenesis, Wnt signaling and miR-375 can be harnessed more effectively during young-adulthood. Conversely, we suggest that aging alters the pattern of immune activation elicited by stress. Ultimately, interventions that modulate these processes could reduce the burden of stress-related psychopathology in late life.

RESUMO

The insect pathogenic fungus Hirsutella eleutheratorum was first reported as a pathogen of coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei in Colombia in 1993. A similar CBB pathogen identified as Hirsutella sp. was reported also from Colombia in 2007; attempts at isolation and in vitro culture of this fungus were unsuccessful. During 2016 and 2017 on the island of Hawai'i, extensive sampling of CBB populations was conducted in coffee fields treated with Beauveria bassiana-based biopesticides and in untreated fields. Among the samples collected from two high-elevation sites in the district of South Kona were rare findings of adult foundress CBB infected with a species of Hirsutella fitting the description of H. eleutheratorum. Prevalence of the pathogen was, in all cases, very low (<1%), having no significant impact on pest populations, even under conditions supporting epizootics of B. bassiana. The fungus was readily isolated from freshly-killed CBB and cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Molecular characterization identified the fungus as a member of the Hirsutella citriformis clade, which includes species recently placed in the genus Ophiocordyceps. Adult CBB exposed to fungus-killed beetles or to PDA cultures of the fungus succumbed to infection within 10-14 days. Under high-humidity laboratory conditions, the fungus emerged from the killed host and produced long, conidia-bearing synnemata characteristic of the species. To our knowledge, this is the first record of H. eleutheratorum from CBB in Hawai'i and the first account of isolation, in vitro culture, genetic characterization, host-to-host transfer, and culture-to-host transfer of this fungal pathogen.

RESUMO

Beauveria bassiana (Bb) strain GHA is a major component of an areawide pest management program for coffee berry borer (CBB) in Hawai'i. Recent studies have aimed to provide comprehensive assessments of the efficacy of the Bb-spray component of these programs for economic analyses; however, evaluations have been complicated by activity of naturally-occurring strains of this pathogen infecting CBB. Investigations were therefore undertaken to characterize these strains, assess their natural epizootic potential, and account for their contribution to CBB population suppression. A number of field sites were encountered with no history of significant use of commercial Bb-based biopesticides and where strain GHA was not detectable. Sampling of these sites was conducted early in the coffee season. Greatest activity of wild-type Bb strains was observed on high-elevation farms (>500 m), where 24-42% of foundress beetles in green coffee berries were infected. In contrast, infection rates did not exceed 4% on farms at low elevations (<300 m). Rates of 23-29% infection, comparable to those on high-elevation farms, were recorded in a stand of feral coffee at 293 m elevation, but the coffee was completely shaded and ventilation restricted by a dense overstory of vegetation. Despite high activity of naturally-occurring Bb at some sites (primarily sites at high elevations with humid, moderate-temperature environments and dense pest populations), these fungi did not prevent CBB from exceeding the economic threshold for commercial spray applications. Nevertheless, the high natural epizootic potential of these fungal strains suggests strong potential for development as microbial biocontrol agents.

RESUMO

Nerve growth factor (NGF) functions to modulate osteoarthritis (OA)-associated pain. Although recent studies suggest that tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1ß mediate NGF activity in human synovial fibroblasts, the regulation of NGF expression in human synovial macrophages remains unclear. Here, we examined the role of macrophages in the production and regulation of synovial (SYN) NGF in osteoarthritic knee joints by examining the mRNA expression of TNF-α and IL-1ß in freshly isolated CD14-positive (macrophage-rich fraction) and CD14-negative cells (fibroblast-rich fraction) in synovial tissue from OA patients by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We also examined the effects of IL-1ß and TNF-α on NGF mRNA expression in cultured CD14-positive (macrophage-rich fraction) and CD14-negative cells (fibroblast-rich fraction). In addition, to examine the contribution of macrophages to NGF, TNF-α and IL-1ß expression, we injected clodronate liposomes systemically into STR/Ort mice, an osteoarthritis animal model, to deplete macrophages. TNF-α and IL-1ß mRNA levels in CD14-positive cells from the SYN of OA patients was significantly higher than that in CD14-negative cells, while NGF expression did not differ markedly between the two cell fractions. In addition, treatment of human cultured CD14-positive and -negative cells with IL-1ß and TNF-α enhanced NGF mRNA and protein levels. Expression of NGF, IL-1ß and TNF-α was also reduced significantly in STR/Ort mice upon macrophage depletion. These findings suggest that IL-1ß and TNF-α regulate NGF expression and production in synovial macrophages and fibroblasts in osteoarthritic joints.

RESUMO

The cause of pleural effusion remains uncertain in approximately 15% of patients despite exhaustive evaluation. As recently described immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-related disease is a fibroinflammatory disorder that can affect various organs, including the lungs, we investigate whether idiopathic pleural effusion includes IgG4-associated etiology. Between 2000 and 2012, we collected 830 pleural fluid samples and reviewed 35 patients with pleural effusions undiagnosed after pleural biopsy at Yamaguchi-Ube Medical Center. Importantly, IgG4 immunostaining revealed infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells in the pleura of 12 patients (34%, IgG4+ group). The median effusion IgG4 level was 41 mg/dl in the IgG4+ group and 27 mg/dl in the IgG4- group (P < 0·01). The light and heavy chains of effusion IgG4 antibodies of patients in the IgG4+ group were heterogeneous by two-dimensional electrophoresis, indicating the absence of clonality of the IgG4 antibodies. Interestingly, the κ light chains were more heterogeneous than the λ light chains. The measurement of the κ and λ free light chain (FLC) levels in the pleural fluids showed significantly different κ FLC levels (median: 28·0 versus 9·1 mg/dl, P < 0·01) and κ/λ ratios (median: 2·0 versus 1·2, P < 0·001) between the IgG4+ and IgG4- groups. Furthermore, the κ/λ ratios were correlated with the IgG4+ /IgG+ plasma cell ratios in the pleura of the IgG4+ group. Taken together, these results demonstrate the involvement of IgG4 in certain idiopathic pleural effusions and provide insights into the diagnosis, pathogenesis and therapeutic opportunities of IgG4-associated pleural effusion.

RESUMO

We found that community-dwelling women with 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels <20 ng/mL compared to levels ≥20 ng/mL indicated increased risks for clinical, non-vertebral, and fragility fractures during 5 years. Furthermore, the increased risks of non-vertebral fractures remained significant in 10 and 15 years after adjusting for age and bone mineral density. INTRODUCTION: We examined whether total 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels are associated with fracture risk over 15 years in a Japanese female cohort. METHODS: Of 1437 community-dwelling women aged ≥50 years in the baseline survey, 1236 provided information regarding fractures during a 15-year follow-up period. The analysis included 1211 women without early menopause or diseases affecting bone metabolism. RESULTS: Over 15 years, 269 clinical (224 non-vertebral, 149 fragility) fracture events were confirmed. Incidence rates categorized by 25(OH)D levels (<10, 10-20, 20-30, and ≥30 ng/mL) indicated a significant divergence for any clinical fractures in 5 years (log rank test p = 0.016) and for non-vertebral fractures in 5, 10, and 15 years (p < 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.017, respectively). Hazard ratios (HRs) for 25(OH)D levels <10 and 10-20 ng/mL compared to levels ≥30 ng/mL during 5 years indicated significances for clinical fractures (HR 4.93 with p = 0.009, HR 3.00 with p = 0.034) and for non-vertebral fractures (HR 6.55 with p = 0.005, HR 3.49 with p = 0.036). Those with levels <20 ng/mL compared to those with levels ≥20 ng/mL indicated significant increased risks for clinical fractures (HR 1.72 with p = 0.010), non-vertebral fractures (HR 2.45 with p < 0.001), and fragility fractures (HR 2.00 with p = 0.032) in 5 years. The HR of non-vertebral fractures for levels <20 ng/mL remained significant during 15 years (HR 1.42 with p = 0.012) after adjustment for age and femoral neck bone mineral density. CONCLUSIONS: Low 25(OH)D levels, especially <20 ng/mL, were associated with elevated fracture risks in Japanese women.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: A recently developed method to assess comprehensive coagulation function, clot waveform analysis (CWA), accurately detect low levels (<1 IU/dL) of factor VIII activity (FVIII:C) in haemophilia A patients (HA-pts). Improvements are needed, however, to differentiate patients with very low from absent levels of FVIII:C. AIM: We attempted to optimize CWA using the coagulation analyser CS-2000i™ to distinguish between very low levels and absent FVIII:C in severe HA-pts. METHODS AND RESULTS: Activated partial thrombin time (aPTT)-based clot waveforms were determined in FVIII-deficient plasmas mixed with various amounts of recombinant FVIII. Clot times (CT) were shortened, and maximum coagulation velocity (|min1|) and acceleration (|min2|) were increased in FVIII dose-dependently at levels ranging from 0.25 to 100 IU/dL. The lowest level of FVIII:C detected was 0.25 IU/dL. Plasma samples from modestly severe (MS-HA; 0.5-<1.0 IU/dL), very severe (VS-HA; 0.25-<0.5 IU/dL), extremely severe (ES-HA; <0.25 IU/dL) and inhibitor-positive HA-pts (HA-inh) were examined. The CT was markedly prolonged in all instances but showed significant differences between the different groups insufficiently. The |min1| and |min2| in HA-inh were lower compared to the other groups (P<.05). A new parameter (slope-|min1|) reflecting average coagulation acceleration was derived. This index (median) was lower in HA-inh (0.0042) compared to ES-HA (0.0068) and VS-HA (0.011) with greater significant differences (P<.01), and an index of <.005 reflected the total absence of FVIII in the presence of inhibitor. CONCLUSION: The slope-|min1| parameter could provide a useful index for evaluating very low and absent levels of FVIII and/or the development of FVIII inhibitor in HA-pts.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between mid-trimester residual cervical length (CL) and the risk of preterm birth in pregnancies after abdominal radical trachelectomy (RT). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: University hospital. POPULATION: A total of 33 deliveries after 22 weeks' gestation in 30 women who underwent abdominal RT including prophylactic cervical cerclage and perinatal care between January 2002 and May 2016. METHODS: The association between mid-trimester residual CL (the distance between the cerclage and the external cervical os) and gestational age at delivery was investigated. Receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was performed to estimate the optimal cut-off values of the mid-trimester residual CL for the prediction of preterm birth. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Preterm birth before 34 weeks' gestation. RESULTS: Mid-trimester residual CL showed a significant correlation with gestational age at delivery (r = 0.36, P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in residual CL between women who did and those who did not give birth before 34 weeks (P < 0.05). Mid-trimester residual CL < 13 mm was a good predictor of birth before 34 weeks, with a sensitivity of 67%, specificity of 75%, positive predictive value of 55% and negative predictive value of 86% (area under ROC curve, 0.75). CONCLUSIONS: Mid-trimester residual CL is significantly correlated with gestational age at delivery. Residual CL assessment could be used to reassure physicians and women that there is only a small chance of preterm birth in pregnancies after abdominal RT. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: Mid-trimester residual cervical length is a good predictor of preterm birth after radical trachelectomy.

RESUMO

Herein, Si nanoparticles have been fabricated from Si swarf using a bead milling method. The adsorption of 9,10-dimethylanthracene (DMA) on Si nanoparticles enhances the photoluminescence (PL) intensity by ∼60 000 times that of DMA in hexane. The PL spectra possess peaked structures due to the vibronic transition of DMA. For the excitation energies higher than 4.0 eV, vibronic bands with energies higher than the (0, 0) band were observed and attributed to PL from the vibrational excited-states. The excitation spectra showed that incident light was absorbed by both DMA and the Si nanoparticles. The lifetime of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs in the Si nanoparticles was much longer than the DMA PL lifetime; this indicated that either a hole or an electron transferred to DMA first, followed by an opposite charge transfer. In the cases where a hole is first transferred to DMA, an electronic ground-state is stabilized via solvation. When an electron is captured by the potential of the electronic excited-state, transitions from the vibrational excited-states proceed due to the high transition probability, generating PL bands with energies higher than the (0, 0) band. In the cases where an electron is first transferred to DMA, internal relaxation to the vibrational ground-state occurs, and the potential of the electronic excited-state is lowered via solvation.

RESUMO

AIMS: To obtain insight into the complex behaviour of denitrifying and total bacterial groups during the nitrogen accumulation process in an ammonia-loaded biofiltration system. METHODS AND RESULTS: Denitrifying and total bacterial communities in a laboratory-scale rockwool biofilter with intermittent water recirculation were analysed by using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis targeting nosZ and metabarcoding sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Gene abundance was evaluated by quantitative PCR. The nosZ number increased from 6·59 × 106 to 3·33 × 108 copies per gram dry sample over the 436 days of operation, during which nitrogen mass balance errors increased to 39%. The nosZ sequences associated with the genera Castellaniella, Hyphomicrobium and Pseudomonas were detected. Metabarcoding sequencing analysis indicated that the proportions of the genera for which at least one denitrifying strain or species possessing nosZ had been characterized corresponded well to the nitrogen loss. In addition, the genus Nitrosococcus (γ-proteobacteria) increased its relative abundance at days 317 and 436. CONCLUSIONS: The increased proportion of denitrifying bacteria in this ammonia-loaded biofiltration system could be related to the nitrogen loss. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These results will help to clarify the complex behaviour of nitrifiers and denitrifiers within ammonia-loaded biofiltration systems.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Prevalence of ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is lower than that of knee OA, however, the molecular mechanisms underlying the difference remain unrevealed. In the present study, we developed mouse ankle OA models for use as tools to investigate pathophysiology of ankle OA and molecular characteristics of ankle cartilage. DESIGN: We anatomically and histologically examined ankle and knee joints of C57BL/6 mice, and compared them with human samples. We examined joints of 8-week-old and 25-month-old mice. For experimental models, we developed three different ankle OA models: a medial model, a lateral model, and a bilateral model, by resection of respective structures. OA severity was evaluated 8 weeks after the surgery by safranin O staining, and cartilage degradation in the medial model was sequentially examined. RESULTS: Anatomical and histological features of human and mouse ankle joints were comparable. Additionally, the mouse ankle joint was more resistant to cartilage degeneration with aging than the mouse knee joint. In the medial model, the tibiotalar joint was markedly affected while the subtalar joint was less degenerated. In the lateral model, the subtalar joint was mainly affected while the tibiotalar joint was less altered. In the bilateral model, both joints were markedly degenerated. In the time course of the medial model, TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining and Adamts5 expression were enhanced at early and middle stages, while Mmp13 expression was gradually increased during the OA development. CONCLUSION: Since human and mouse ankles are comparable, the present models will contribute to ankle OA pathophysiology and general cartilage research in future.

RESUMO

AIM: Sessile serrated adenomas/polyps (SSA/Ps) have been proposed as precursors of colorectal cancer. The aims of this investigation were to compare the endoscopic findings of SSA/Ps with those of other serrated lesions and to compare the histological findings of SSA/Ps with those of conventional adenomas. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed colonoscopy records at our institution from 1984 to 2013 and identified cases of endoscopically or surgically resected conventional adenomas and serrated lesions, including SSA/Ps, hyperplastic polyps (HPs) and traditional serrated adenomas (TSAs). The colonoscopic findings of SSA/Ps were compared with those of the other two serrated lesions and histological findings were compared among all groups of lesions. RESULTS: There were 79 HPs in 68 patients, 77 SSA/Ps in 63 patients, 167 TSAs in 145 patients and 6324 conventional adenomas in 4129 patients. The inverted type and flat-elevated type were more frequent among SSA/Ps than among the other two types of serrated lesions. Magnifying colonoscopy revealed that a round and open pit pattern, expanded crypt openings and varicose microvascular vessels were more frequently observed among SSA/Ps than among the other types. The incidence of high-grade dysplasia or carcinoma among SSA/Ps (13.0%) was significantly higher than that among HPs (0%, P < 0.001) and equivalent to that among conventional adenomas (12.3%). CONCLUSION: SSA/Ps have colonoscopic features distinct from those of HPs and TSAs. The malignant potential of SSA/Ps seems to be equal to that of conventional adenomas.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the high-resolution computed tomography (CT) findings of primary lung cancer with cavitation and compare the findings in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The high-resolution CT findings of tumours with cavitation were retrospectively evaluated in 60 patients. Forty-seven of the lesions were diagnosed as adenocarcinomas; 13 were diagnosed as squamous cell carcinomas. The diameters of the tumour and cavity, the maximum thickness of the cavity wall, shape of the cavity wall, the number of cavities, and the presence of ground-glass opacity, bronchial obstruction, intratumoural bronchiectasis, emphysema, and honeycombing were evaluated. The mechanisms of cavity formation were examined according to the pathological features. RESULTS: The maximum thickness of the cavity wall was significantly greater in squamous cell carcinomas than in adenocarcinomas (p=0.002). Ground-glass opacity and intratumoural bronchiectasis were significantly more common in adenocarcinomas than in squamous cell carcinomas (p<0.001 and p=0.040, respectively). Regarding the pathological findings, intratumoural bronchiectasis with or without alveolar wall destruction contributed to a significant difference between adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (p<0.001; odds ratio [OR], 20.35; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.87-107.10). CONCLUSION: The cavity wall tends to be thicker in squamous cell carcinomas than in adenocarcinomas. The presence of ground-glass opacity and intratumoural bronchiectasis is strongly suggestive of adenocarcinoma.
