RESUMO

This article proposes a novel method for detecting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in an underground channel using visible light communication (VLC) and machine learning (ML). We present mathematical models of COVID-19 Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid (DNA) gene transfer in regular square constellations using a CSK/QAM-based VLC system. ML algorithms are used to classify the bands present in each electrophoresis sample according to whether the band corresponds to a positive, negative, or ladder sample during the search for the optimal model. Complexity studies reveal that the square constellation N=22i×22i,(i=3) yields a greater profit. Performance studies indicate that, for BER = 10-3, there are gains of -10 [dB], -3 [dB], 3 [dB], and 5 [dB] for N=22i×22i,(i=0,1,2,3), respectively. Based on a total of 630 COVID-19 samples, the best model is shown to be XGBoots, which demonstrated an accuracy of 96.03%, greater than that of the other models, and a recall of 99% for positive values.

PURPOSE: Individuals with a family history of type 2 diabetes (FH +) have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated as biomarkers of type 2 diabetes risk. Here, we investigated if four circulating miRNAs related to glucose metabolism were altered in men with a FH + and we conducted a preliminary analysis to determine if miRNA expressions were responsive to 8 weeks of combined exercise training. METHODS: Sixteen young healthy men (mean ± SD; age 22.5 ± 2.5; BMI 26.4 ± 4.0) with FH + or without a family history of type 2 diabetes (FH -) underweight 8 weeks of combined endurance and resistance exercise training (n = 8 FH -; n = 8 FH +). The expression of miR-29a, miR-133a, miR-133b, and miR-155 were measured in serum before and after exercise training. QIAGEN's Ingenuity® Pathway Analysis was used to examine miRNA target genes and their involvement in glucose metabolism signaling pathways. RESULTS: There were no differences in miRNA expressions between FH - and FH + . Exercise training did not alter miRNA expressions in either FH - or FH + despite improvements in insulin sensitivity, aerobic capacity, and muscular strength. miR-29a and miR-155 were inversely related to fasting glucose, and miR-133a and miR-133b were negatively correlated with glucose tolerance; however, correlations were not observed with insulin sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: The circulating miRNAs- miR-29a, miR-133a, miR-133b, and miR-155 are related to measures of glucose metabolism in healthy, normoglycemic men, but do not reflect peripheral insulin sensitivity or improvements in metabolic health following 8 weeks of combined exercise training.

Underground Mining (UM) is a hostile industry that generally requires a wireless communication system as a cross-cutting axis for its optimal operation. Therefore, in the last five years, it has been shown that, in addition to radio-frequency-based communication links, wireless optical communications, such as Visible Light Communication (VLC), can be applied to UM environments. The application of VLC systems in underground mines, known as UM-VLC, must take into account the unique physical features of underground mines. Among the physical phenomena found in underground mines, the most important ones are the positioning of optical transmitters and receivers, irregular walls, shadowing, and a typical phenomenon found in tunnels known as scattering, which is caused by the atmosphere and dust particles. Consequently, it is necessary to use proper dust particle distribution models consistent with these scenarios to describe the scattering phenomenon in a coherent way in order to design realistic UM-VLC systems with better performance. Therefore, in this article, we present an in-depth study of the interaction of optical links with dust particles suspended in the UM environment and the atmosphere. In addition, we analytically derived a hemispherical 3D dust particle distribution model, along with its main statistical parameters. This analysis allows to develop a more realistic scattering channel component and presents an enhanced UM-VLC channel model. The performance of the proposed UM-VLC system is evaluated using computational numerical simulations following the IEEE 802.1.5.7 standard in terms of Channel Impulse Response (CIR), received power, Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR), Root Mean Square (RMS) delay spread, and Bit Error Rate (BER). The results demonstrate that the hemispherical dust particle distribution model is more accurate and realistic in terms of the metrics evaluated compared to other models found in the literature. Furthermore, the performance of the UM-VLC system is negatively affected when the number of dust particles suspended in the environment increases.

Visible light communication (VLC) is considered an enabling technology for future 6G wireless systems. Among the many applications in which VLC systems are used, one of them is harsh environments such as Underground Mining (UM) tunnels. However, these environments are subject to degrading environmental and intrinsic challenges for optical links. Therefore, current research should focus on solutions to mitigate these problems and improve the performance of Underground Mining Visible Light Communication (UM-VLC) systems. In this context, this article presents a novel solution that involves an improvement to the Angle Diversity Receivers (ADRs) based on the adaptive orientation of the Photo-Diodes (PDs) in terms of the Received Signal Strength Ratio (RSSR) scheme. Specifically, this methodology is implemented in a hemidodecahedral ADR and evaluated in a simulated UM-VLC scenario. The performance of the proposed design is evaluated using metrics such as received power, user data rate, and bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, our approach is compared with state-of-the-art ADRs implemented with fixed PDs and with the Time of Arrival (ToA) reception method. An improvement of at least 60% in terms of the analyzed metrics compared to state-of-the-art solutions is obtained. Therefore, the numerical results demonstrate that the hemidodecahedral ADR, with adaptive orientation PDs, enhances the received optical signal. Furthermore, the proposed scheme improves the performance of the UM-VLC system due to its optimum adaptive angular positioning, which is completed according to the strongest optical received signal power. By improving the performance of the UM-VLC system, this novel method contributes to further consideration of VLC systems as potential and enabling technologies for future 6G deployments.

The dynamism envisioned in future high-capacity gridless optical networks requires facing several challenges in distortion mitigation, such as the mitigation of interchannel interference (ICI) effects in any optical channel without information of their adjacent channels. Machine learning (ML)-based techniques have been proposed in recent works to estimate and mitigate different optical impairments with promising results. We propose and evaluate two training strategies for supervised learning algorithms with the aim to minimize ICI effects in a gridless 3×16-Gbaud 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) Nyquist-wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) system. One strategy, called updating strategy, is based on symbol training sequence, and the other one, called characterization strategy, is based on an offline training using a previous system characterization. Artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithms are explored for both training strategies. Experimental results showed a bit error rate (BER) improvement at low training lengths for both training strategies, for instance, gains up to ∼4dB in terms of optical signal-to-noise ratio were achieved in a back-to-back scenario. Besides, the KNN and ELM algorithms showed significant BER reduction in transmission over 250 km optical fiber. Additionally, we carried out a brief computational complexity analysis where ELM presented only 1.9% of ANN processing time. Hence, the use of ML-based techniques could enhance the optical gridless networks performance and consequently fulfill future traffic demands.

The opportunistic exchange of information between vehicles can significantly contribute to reducing the occurrence of accidents and mitigating their damages. However, in urban environments, especially at intersection scenarios, obstacles such as buildings and walls block the line of sight between the transmitter and receiver, reducing the vehicular communication range and thus harming the performance of road safety applications. Furthermore, the sizes of the surrounding vehicles and weather conditions may affect the communication. This makes communications in urban V2V communication scenarios extremely difficult. Since the late notification of vehicles or incidents can lead to the loss of human lives, this paper focuses on improving urban vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications at intersections by using a transmission scheme able of adapting to the surrounding environment. Therefore, we proposed a neuroevolution of augmenting topologies-based adaptive beamforming scheme to control the radiation pattern of an antenna array and thus mitigate the effects generated by shadowing in urban V2V communication at intersection scenarios. This work considered the IEEE 802.11p standard for the physical layer of the vehicular communication link. The results show that our proposal outperformed the isotropic antenna in terms of the communication range and response time, as well as other traditional machine learning approaches, such as genetic algorithms and mutation strategy-based particle swarm optimization.

In this manuscript we propose a hybrid Visible Light Communication and Radio Frequency (VLC-RF) scheme for the implementation of a portable Phaser Measurement Unit (PMU) for deep underground tunnels. Through computer simulations and laboratory measurements we are capable of providing Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) to the PMUs, as well as high accuracy positioning in a Global Positioning System (GPS) denied environment. The estimated PMU position, time stamp, and electrical power system measurements are sent to a central monitoring station using a radio frequency uplink with a data rate of hundreds of Kbps. Simulations and experimental measurements show that the proposed scheme can be used to control a large number of VLC-RF PMU devices inside a tunnel. The tests demonstrate the viability of the hybrid prototype, which will improve performance compared to commercial PMUs that lack these features.

This paper proposes two solutions based on angle diversity receivers (ADRs) to mitigate inter-cell interference (ICI) in underground mining visible light communication (VLC) systems, one of them is a novel approach. A realistic VLC system based on two underground mining scenarios, termed as mining roadway and mine working face, is developed and modeled. A channel model based on the direct component in line-of-sight (LoS) and reflections of non-line-of-sight (NLoS) links is considered, as well as thermal and shot noises. The design and mathematical models of a pyramid distribution and a new hemi-dodecahedral distribution are addressed in detail. The performances of these approaches, accompanied by signal combining schemes, are evaluated with the baseline of a single photo-diode in reception. Results show that the minimum lighting standards established in both scenarios are met. As expected, the root-mean-square delay spread decreases as the distance between the transmitters and receivers increases. Furthermore, the hemi-dodecahedron ADR in conjunction with the maximum ratio combining (MRC) scheme, presents the best performance in the evaluated VLC system, with a maximum user data rate of 250 Mbps in mining roadway and 120 Mbps in mine working face, received energy per bit/noise power of 32 dB and 23 dB, respectively, when the bit error rate corresponds to 10 - 4 , and finally, values of 120 dB in mining roadway and 118 dB in mine working face for signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio are observed in a cumulative distribution function.

NADPH oxidases (NOX) are enzyme complexes that have received much attention as key molecules in the development of vascular dysfunction. NOX have the primary function of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), and are considered the main source of ROS production in endothelial cells. The endothelium is a thin monolayer that lines the inner surface of blood vessels, acting as a secretory organ to maintain homeostasis of blood flow. The enzymatic production of nitric oxide (NO) by endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) is critical in mediating endothelial function, and oxidative stress can cause dysregulation of eNOS and endothelial dysfunction. Insulin is a stimulus for increases in blood flow and endothelium-dependent vasodilation. However, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes are characterized by poor control of the endothelial cell redox environment, with a shift toward overproduction of ROS by NOX. Studies in models of type 2 diabetes demonstrate that aberrant NOX activation contributes to uncoupling of eNOS and endothelial dysfunction. It is well-established that endothelial dysfunction precedes the onset of cardiovascular disease, therefore NOX are important molecular links between type 2 diabetes and vascular complications. The aim of the current review is to describe the normal, healthy physiological mechanisms involved in endothelial function, and highlight the central role of NOX in mediating endothelial dysfunction when glucose homeostasis is impaired.

Background: Exercise training is thought to improve the mitochondrial energy efficiency of skeletal muscle. Some studies suggest exercise training increases the efficiency for ATP synthesis by oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), but the molecular mechanisms are unclear. We have previously shown that exercise remodels the lipid composition of mitochondrial membranes, and some of these changes could contribute to improved OXPHOS efficiency (ATP produced by O2 consumed or P/O). Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α) is a transcriptional co-activator that coordinately regulates exercise-induced adaptations including mitochondria. We hypothesized that increased PGC-1α activity is sufficient to remodel mitochondrial membrane lipids and promote energy efficiency. Methods: Mice with skeletal muscle-specific overexpression of PGC-1α (MCK-PGC-1α) and their wildtype littermates were used for this study. Lipid mass spectrometry and quantitative PCR were used to assess muscle mitochondrial lipid composition and their biosynthesis pathway. The abundance of OXPHOS enzymes was determined by western blot assay. High-resolution respirometry and fluorometry analysis were used to characterize mitochondrial bioenergetics (ATP production, O2 consumption, and P/O) for permeabilized fibers and isolated mitochondria. Results: Lipidomic analyses of skeletal muscle mitochondria from wildtype and MCK-PGC-1α mice revealed that PGC-1α increases the concentrations of cone-shaped lipids such as phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), cardiolipin (CL), and lysophospholipids, while decreases the concentrations of phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylinositol (PI) and phosphatidic acid (PA). However, while PGC-1α overexpression increased the abundance of OXPHOS enzymes in skeletal muscle and the rate of O2 consumption (JO2), P/O values were unaffected with PGC-1α in permeabilized fibers or isolated mitochondria. Conclusions: Collectively, overexpression of PGC-1α promotes the biosynthesis of mitochondrial PE and CL but neither PGC-1α nor the mitochondrial membrane lipid remodeling induced in MCK-PGC-1α mice is sufficient to increase the efficiency for mitochondrial ATP synthesis. These findings suggest that exercise training may increase OXPHOS efficiency by a PGC-1α-independent mechanism, and question the hypothesis that mitochondrial lipids directly affect OXPHOS enzymes to improve efficiency for ATP synthesis.

Creatine is a naturally occurring compound, functioning in conjunction with creatine kinase to play a quintessential role in both cellular energy provision and intracellular energy shuttling. An extensive body of literature solidifies the plethora of ergogenic benefits gained following dietary creatine supplementation; however, recent findings have further indicated a potential therapeutic role for creatine in several pathologies such as myopathies, neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic disturbances, chronic kidney disease and inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, creatine has been found to exhibit non-energy-related properties, such as serving as a potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Despite the therapeutic success of creatine supplementation in varying clinical populations, there is scarce information regarding the potential application of creatine for combatting the current leading cause of mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD). Taking into consideration the broad ergogenic and non-energy-related actions of creatine, we hypothesize that creatine supplementation may be a potential therapeutic strategy for improving vascular health in at-risk populations such as older adults or those with CVD. With an extensive literature search, we have found only four clinical studies that have investigated the direct effect of creatine on vascular health and function. In this review, we aim to give a short background on the pleiotropic applications of creatine, and to then summarize the current literature surrounding creatine and vascular health. Furthermore, we discuss the varying mechanisms by which creatine could benefit vascular health and function, such as the impact of creatine supplementation upon inflammation and oxidative stress.

Vitamin D is known to elicit a vasoprotective effect, while vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for endothelial dysfunction (ED). ED is characterized by reduced bioavailability of a potent endothelium-dependent vasodilator, nitric oxide (NO), and is an early event in the development of atherosclerosis. In endothelial cells, vitamin D regulates NO synthesis by mediating the activity of the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS). Under pathogenic conditions, the oxidative stress caused by excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) facilitates NO degradation and suppresses NO synthesis, consequently reducing NO bioavailability. Vitamin D, however, counteracts the activity of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase which produces ROS, and improves antioxidant capacity by enhancing the activity of antioxidative enzymes such as superoxide dismutase. In addition to ROS, proinflammatory mediators such as TNF-α and IL-6 are risk factors for ED, restraining NO and eNOS bioactivity and upregulating the expression of various atherosclerotic factors through the NF-κB pathway. These proinflammatory activities are inhibited by vitamin D by suppressing NF-κB signaling and production of proinflammatory cytokines. In this review, we discuss the diverse activities of vitamin D in regulating NO bioavailability and endothelial function.

Introduction: A family history of type 2 diabetes (FH+) is a major risk factor for the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. However, it remains unknown whether exercise-induced improvements in insulin sensitivity and metabolic flexibility are impacted by a FH+. Therefore, we investigated whether improvements in insulin sensitivity, metabolic flexibility, body composition, aerobic fitness and muscle strength are limited by a FH+ following eight weeks of combined exercise training compared to individuals without a family history of type 2 diabetes (FH-). Methods: Twenty (n = 10 FH-, n = 10 FH+) young, healthy, sedentary, normoglycemic, Mexican-American males (age: FH- 22.50 ± 0.81, FH+ 23.41 ± 0.86 years; BMI: FH- 27.91 ± 1.55, FH+ 26.64 ± 1.02 kg/m2) underwent eight weeks of combined aerobic and resistance exercise training three times/week (35 min aerobic followed by six full-body resistance exercises). Insulin sensitivity was assessed via hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamps. Metabolic flexibility was assessed by the change in respiratory quotient from fasted to insulin-stimulated states. Body composition was determined using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Aerobic fitness was determined by a graded exercise test, and upper- and lower-body strength were assessed via one-repetition maximum bench press and leg strength dynamometer, respectively. Results: Insulin sensitivity, metabolic flexibility, aerobic fitness and strength were not different between groups (p > 0.05). Eight weeks of combined aerobic and resistance exercise training improved insulin sensitivity (FH- p = 0.02, FH+ p = 0.002), increased fat free mass (FH- p = 0.006, FH+ p = 0.001), aerobic fitness (FH- p = 0.03, FH+ p = 0.002), and upper- (FH- p = 0.0001, FH+ p = 0.0001) and lower-body strength (FH- p = 0.0009, FH+ p = 0.0003), but did not change metabolic flexibility (p > 0.05) in both groups. Exercise-induced improvements in metabolic outcomes were similar between groups. Conclusions: Insulin sensitivity, metabolic flexibility, aerobic fitness and strength were not compromised by a FH+. Additionally, a FH+ is not a limiting factor for exercise-induced improvements in insulin sensitivity, aerobic fitness, body composition, and strength in normoglycemic young Mexican-American men.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal corticosteroids reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity; however, there are few studies in developing countries, and with inconsistent results. The purpose of this study was to quantify the frequency of the use of prenatal corticosteroids and to estimate its effect on the morbidity and mortality of premature newborns. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on premature newborns selected from a census conducted between January 2016 and August 2017. The use of corticosteroids was taken from the maternal records, and the dependent variables from the neonatal records. An analysis was made of the relationship using logistic regression, adjusted to gestational age and weight. RESULTS: The study included 1083 premature infants of which 53.3% were male. The mean gestational age was 33.4 weeks. Corticosteroids were received by 42%, with latency ≥24hours in 23.6% and ≥48hours in 13.8%. Respiratory distress syndrome was observed in 35% (379/1083), early neonatal sepsis in 4.4% (48/1083), late neonatal sepsis in 10.7% (116/1083), intraventricular haemorrhage in 15.1% (137/908), chronic lung disease in 51.4% (165/321), and death in 22.3% (242/1083). Prenatal corticosteroids decreased the risk of death in children under 34 weeks (OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.40-0.98). The decrease was greater if they presented with latency ≥48hours (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.20-0.80). The rest of the dependent variables were not modified by the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: In preterm infants, 42% received antenatal corticosteroids. In those with less than 34 weeks, there was a decrease in the risk of death without changes in morbidity.
