RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of frailty and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the older population heightens the risk of adverse events. However, research on functional and wellness factors associated with frailty in this population is limited. PURPOSE: To investigate the associations of physical performance, functional dependency, physical activity, nutritional status, sleep, self-perceived health and depression with frailty in community-dwelling older adults with coexisting frailty and type 2 diabetes mellitus. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: The study included 123 community-dwelling older adults (73.7 ± 6.0 years) with pre-frailty/frailty and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery), functional dependency (Barthel Index and Lawton & Brody), physical activity and inactivity (GeneActiv wrist-worn accelerometer), malnutrition risk (Mini Nutritional Assessment), sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), self-perceived health (EuroQoL 5-Dimension 3-Level) and depression (Yesavage 15-item-Geriatric-Depression-Scale) were evaluated through personal interviews. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to categorize the variables into components, and logistic regressions were used to propose the best-fitted model for each component. RESULTS: The PCA identified four components: (i) physical performance, with gait speed and leg mean velocity as the main variables associated with frailty; (ii) balance, showing significant associations with monopodal balance; (iii) daily activities, with moderate to vigorous physical activity and the Lawton and Brody score as the main variables associated with frailty within this component; and (iv) wellness factors, with nutritional status, self-perceived health and depression score as the primary variables associated with frailty. CONCLUSIONS: This research underscores the significance of physical function and daily activities as protective factors against frailty in community-dwelling older adults with coexisting frailty and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The health dimension contributes both protective and risk factors, emphasizing the need for comprehensive assessments in managing frailty in this population. Lignocellulosic sugars are the major renewable building blocks for green fuels and chemicals production. However, the implication of an effective pretreatment process is an inevitable process to access the biomass sugars. Alkaline pretreatment is a viable pretreatment process, causing a selective removal of lignin, with a minimum degradation of carbohydrates, increasing porosity and surface area, eventually enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis. Here, we have assessed commercial cloth washing detergents as catalytic agents, for the lignin removal from sugarcane bagasse. Three different detergents (Brilhiante® (B), Omo® (O), Sabonito Flash® (F)) were tested using three different concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) with and without pH adjustment. Pretreatment with O5pH (5% Omo®, pH 12) showed the maximum lignin removal (81.14%) and retainment of cellulose (44.15%), and hemicellulose (29.71%) in the pretreated bagasse. The maximum sugars (26.62 g/L) were released from the O10pH-pretreated sugarcane bagasse. This study shows the potential of washing detergents as the new potential catalytic agents for the pretreatment of biomass for efficient sugars recovery and retaining maximum lignin in the pretreated substrate.

This study investigated the relationship between physical activity, inactivity, physical function, and sleep in older adults with a frailty phenotype. A total of 184 pre-frail/frail older adults were included. Physical activity, inactive behavior, and sleep parameters were assessed using a wrist-worn accelerometer. Participants were categorized into four groups based on their levels of inactivity and physical activity. The results showed that individuals with lower levels of inactivity had better lower body mean velocity and sleep regularity than those with higher levels of inactivity. Physically active older adults exhibited faster gait speed and performed better in lower body strength tests than physically inactive participants. Further analysis revealed that specific combinations of inactivity and physical activity were associated with varying levels of physical function. The findings highlight the importance of physical activity and the negative impact of inactivity on physical function and sleep in older adults with a frailty phenotype.

Lignocellulosic byproducts, mainly generated by the agro-industrial sector, have great potential as cost-effective feedstocks for bioprocesses because of their abundant availability and high content of sugar-rich and nutrient-rich elements. This biomass can be employed as a carbon source to produce various molecules using several microorganisms. Yeast strains have shown their capability to metabolize diverse C5 and C6 carbon sources, thereby facilitating their use in the bioprocessing of lignocellulosic biomass. Furthermore, yeasts can produce a wide range of valuable products, including biofuels, enzymes, proteins, and pigments, making them attractive for use in integrated biorefineries. Yeast-derived pigments have versatile applications and are environmentally friendly alternatives to their synthetic counterparts. This review emphasizes the potential of lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock for producing yeast-derived products with a focus on pigments as valuable molecules. It also proposes a yeast-derived pigment platform utilizing lignocellulosic byproducts and explores its potential integration in biorefineries.

The effect of a non-ionic surfactant optimized formulation (SOF) obtained from an experimental design was evaluated for different influencing variables in the processing of sugarcane bagasse cellulignin to produce biopigments. The major findings in the saccharification stage using the SOF point that: at same enzyme loading, the highest glucan hydrolysis yield was 63 % (2-fold higher compared to control); the enzyme loading of 2.5 FPU/g resulted in similar yield compared to 10 FPU/g (control); 15 % (m/v) of total solids loading maintained the yield in fed-batch configuration; the hydrolysis yield is maintained at high shear force stress (800 rpm of stirring rate) and temperatures (50-70 °C). Besides, under separate and semi-simultaneous hydrolysis and fermentation, the maximum biopigments production were of 10 AU510nm/mL and 17.84 AU510nm/mL, respectively. The SOF used in this study was found to be a promising additive either in a single or sequential steps to produce biopigments in biorefineries.

RESUMO

The use of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) as feedstock has received increasing attention as an alternative to fossil-based refineries. Initial steps such as pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis are essential to breakdown the complex structure of LCB to make the sugar molecules available to obtain bioproducts by fermentation. However, these steps increase the cost of the bioproduct and often reduces its competitiveness against synthetic products. Currently, the use of surfactants has shown considerable potential to enhance lignocellulosic biomass processing. This review addresses the main mechanisms and role of surfactants as key molecules in various steps of biorefinery processes, viz., increasing the removal of lignin and hemicellulose during the pretreatments, increasing enzymatic stability and enhancing the accessibility of enzymes to the polymeric fractions, and improving the downstream process during fermentation. Further, technical advances, challenges in application of surfactants, and future perspectives to augment the production of several high value-added bioproducts have been discussed.
