RESUMO

Penfluridol is a diphenylbutylpiperdine derivative with a half-life of sixty-six (66) hours. The present study was designed to determine its efficacy for the maintenance of schizophrenia. In a 52 week double-blind study, once weekly doses of penfluridol were compared with once daily doses of chlorpromazine in 56 schizophrenic patients receiving maintenance treatment on an outpatient basis. Both drugs were similar in their clinical effectiveness; no major side effects occurred with either drug.

RESUMO

A collaborative multidisciplinary study was conducted to assess both physical and psychosocial needs of 117 adults with various types of cancers. Although these patients functioned adequately in many areas of their lives, they reported that cancer and its treatment had an impact on energy, physical and recreational activities, communication with spouse, sexual and emotional functioning, occupational matters, and treatment-related situations. Younger patients reported more psychosocial, sexual, and treatment-related problems than did older patients. Female patients reported more chemotherapy-related problems than did male patients. Implications for clinicians treating cancer patients were discussed.

RESUMO

The incidence of physical symptoms in depression was studied in 51 drug-free patients and in an age and sex-matched control group. Mean symptom intensity and number of symptoms were significantly higher in the patient than in the control group. The subjects' personality structure and relationships between their symptoms and degrees of depression and anxiety were examined using the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI), the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Of the variables studied, only the N score of the EPI was shown to influence the symptoms significantly. The effect of such non-specific factors as age, gender, use of alcohol, coffee, tea, and cigarettes was also evaluated and found to be minimal.

RESUMO

Plasma and red blood cell levels of haloperidol, thioridazine, and thioridazine's main metabolite mesoridazine were measured in schizophrenic outpatients during treatment with fixed doses of haloperidol or thioridazine for several months. These drug levels were compared to those in schizophrenic inpatients treated with fixed doses of the same neuroleptics. There were large interpatient variations in plasma and red blood cell levels at a given dose for schizophrenic outpatients as well as for inpatients. The intrapatient day-to-day fluctuation was much greater in the outpatients. The mean coefficient of variation of thioridazine or mesoridazine levels was about two-fold higher in schizophrenic outpatients than in inpatients. Differences in blood sampling time or compliance in medication ingestion do not fully explain the issue. The factors accounting for the increased intrapatient variability of plasma levels of thioridazine, mesoridazine, and haloperidol in schizophrenic outpatients remain unclear.
