Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is the sodium compound derived from glutamic acid. Excessive daily ingestion of MSG leads to elevated amounts of glutamic acid in the bloodstream, which can be detrimental to brain structures. Camellia sinensis, often known as green tea (GT), is a rich source of essential hexogen antioxidants that are necessary for the body. Thirty-two adult male albino rats were divided into four groups (n = 8). Group 1 served as a control -ve group. Group 2 was given GT (1.5 ml/rat/day). Group 3 was given MSG (600 mg/kg/day). Group 4 was given MSG (600 mg/kg/day) and GT (1.5 ml/rat/day). All treatments were given orally for 28 days. MSG administration resulted in significant neurotoxicity in rats that was revealed by the significant reduction of serum concentration of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and nitric oxide (NO), and the significant elevation of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) accompanied by the significant reduction of levels of serum monoamines (dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine) and histological changes in the hippocampus area CA1, dentate gyrus, and cerebellar cortex and positive immunohistochemical staining of glial fibrillary acidic proteins (GFAP) and calretinin. Administration of GT with MSG counteracted the MSG-mediated oxidative stress by significantly increasing serum concentrations of GPX and NO and significantly decreasing concentrations of TAC. Furthermore, GT significantly increased levels of serum monoamines (dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine). Moreover, it ameliorated the histological changes, GFAP, and calretinin immunostaining in brain tissues. It is envisaged that GT will serve as a viable protective choice for the inclusion of the neurotoxicity treatment procedure.

Many adolescents experience severe pain during menstruation, yet their attempts to receive medical attention to alleviate or manage this pain are often met with dismissal or disbelief. In light of these barriers to care, many adolescents turn to social media to share their experiences with menstruation and pain, as well as hear from other members of their community. In this study, we investigated how adolescents present their experiences with menstruation in vlogs (or "video blogs"). Using critical qualitative methods and a four-column analysis structure, we transcribed and thematically analyzed the audio and video content of 17 YouTube vlogs wherein adolescents described their experiences with menstrual pain. We found that stylistically, the vloggers modulated between a polished documentary style and an intimate storytime style of video production. We additionally found that vloggers spoke about their menstrual pain experiences from three perspectives: as a Patient managing and diagnosing physical symptoms, as a Self considering how the pain affects their life and ambitions, and as a Teacher educating their audience. Considering both the visual and audio data, we discuss how healthcare providers can use these findings to inform their approach to discussing menstrual pain with adolescents. We further discuss possible future directions for research into health story sharing on social media.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the predictive value of NLR, PLR, and MPV time series for diagnosis and prognosis of hemotoxic snakebite envenomation. METHODS: This is a prospective study among snakebite patients admitted to the Poison Control Center of Ain Shams University Hospitals and Assiut University Hospitals from the beginning of July 2019 to the end of October 2021. Patients were classified according to their clinical severity into three groups: mild, moderate, and severe. RESULTS: The maximum incidence of snakebite was found in males (95%) from rural areas (80%); at lower limbs (70%); at night (51%); and during the autumn season (43.3%). The admission NLR and PLR can predict hemotoxic snakebite envenomation with an AUC of 0.940 and 0.569. The combination of NLR with PLR can develop a more predominant prediction of snakebite envenomation with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.979. Furthermore, higher admission NLR and PLR levels are associated with prolonged hospital stays. CONCLUSION: While NLR and PLR levels may be helpful in the diagnosis of snakebite, MPV plays no part in the prognosis of snakebite patients. Serial NLR, PLR initially, at 24 hours, and predischarge can be used to evaluate the early treatment response.

RESUMO

Indole is a prestigious heterocyclic skeleton widely found in both naturally-occurring and biologically-active compounds. Pharmaceutical agents containing an indole skeleton in their framework possess a wide range of pharmacological properties, including antiviral, antitumor, analgesic, and other therapeutic activities, and many indole-containing drugs have been proven to have excellent pharmacokinetic and pharmacological effects. Over the past few decades, the FDA has approved over 40 indole-containing drugs for the treatment of various clinical conditions, and the development of indole-related drugs has attracted significant attention from medicinal chemists. This review aims to provide an overview of all the approved drugs that contain an indole nucleus, focusing on their targets, pharmacological activities, and SAR studies.

This study proposes a five-band perfect metamaterials absorber (MMA) for 5G communication in the K- and Ka-bands of the microwave range. The MMA design is based on a folded arms resonator (FAR) with a novel shape, forming the fundamental unit of the absorber. This absorber demonstrates a reasonably wide range of absorption capabilities for 5G communication in the K and Ka bands of the microwave region. The absorptivity of the MMA was examined for both normal and oblique incidence of waves in the frequency range of 20-26 GHz. According to a theoretical analysis, five absorption peaks at resonance frequencies of 20.38, 21.75, 23.1, 24.22 and 25.12 GHz exhibit absorption rates of 97.8%, 92.9%, 97.2%, 99.3% and 96.8%, respectively. The overall average absorption rate is 95.53%, taking into account the presence of two perfect absorption peaks. By adjusting the structural parameters, it is possible to influence the absorption peaks and resonant wavelengths. Additionally, the absorber demonstrates a high level of symmetry, resulting in insensitivity to TE mode polarisation angle and incident angle. The fractal resonators exhibited a capacitive effect at lower frequencies, while the SRRs demonstrated a capacitive effect at higher frequencies. This MMA design is expected to have practical applications in 5G communication technology.

This work has developed and simulated a planar complementary Archimedes-based metamaterial absorber with the goal of its application in refractive index sensing. Unlike designs that employ multiple layers or numerous resonators within a single unit cell, our proposed absorber adopts a more streamlined approach. It consists of three layers, with an FR4 dielectric substrate sandwiched between two copper layers. It's important to note that the absorption characteristics of this design are polarization-dependent. This polarization dependence arises from the asymmetrical resonance behavior observed in both the x and y directions. The absorber exhibits impressive absorption rates at various resonance frequencies, namely 98.5% at f1 = 8.49 GHz, 77.1% at f2 = 8.88 GHz, 88.7% at f3 = 9.3 GHz, 98.2% at f4 = 9.87 GHz, 99.7% at f5 = 10.65 GHz, 83.4% at f6 = 11.58 GHz, and 99.9% at f7 = 12.24 GHz. Furthermore, the article explored the refractive index sensing capabilities of this structure by introducing a 1 mm analyte layer on top of the patch structure. Through refractive index sensing analysis, we've determined that this absorber-based sensor yields an impressive high-quality factor value of 84.5, highlighting its remarkable sensitivity and precision. A more profound comprehension of the physical mechanisms in action has been attained by examining the distribution of surface currents. Furthermore, the behavior of the absorber has been investigated under varying polarization and incident angle conditions, ranging from zero degrees to sixty degrees. The thorough characterization establishes this absorber as a promising choice for microwave sensing applications.

This study describes the synthesis of graphene oxide-modified magnetite (rGO/Fe3O4) and its use as an electrochemical sensor for the quantitative detection of hemoglobin (Hb). rGO is characterized by a 2θ peak at 10.03° in its X-ray diffraction, 1353 and 1586 cm-1 vibrations in Raman spectroscopy, while scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy of rGO and rGO/Fe3O4 revealed the presence of microplate structures in both materials and high presence of iron in rGO/Fe3O4 with 50 wt %. The modified graphite pencil electrode, GPE/rGO/Fe3O4, is characterized using cyclic voltammetry. Higher electrochemical surface area is obtained when the GPE is modified with rGO/Fe3O4. Linear scan voltammetry is used to quantify Hb at the surface of the sensor using ferrocene (FC) as an electrochemical amplifier. Linear response for Hb is obtained in the 0.1-1.8 µM range with a regression coefficient of 0.995, a lower limit of detection of 0.090 µM, and a limit of quantitation of 0.28 µM. The sensor was free from interferents and successfully used to sense Hb in human urine. Due to the above-stated qualities, the GPE/rGO/Fe3O4 electrode could be a potential competitive sensor for trace quantities of Hb in physiological media.

In this study, we synthesized benzodioxol carboxamide derivatives and investigated their antidiabetic potential. The synthesized compounds (Ia-Ic and IIa-IId) underwent characterization via HRMS, 1H-, 13CAPT-NMR, and MicroED. Their efficacy against α-amylase was assessed in vitro, while MTS assays were employed to gauge cytotoxicity across cancer and normal cell lines. Additionally, the antidiabetic impact of compound IIc was evaluated in vivo using a streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice model. Notably, IIa and IIc displayed potent α-amylase inhibition (IC50 values of 0.85 and 0.68 µM, respectively) while exhibiting a negligible effect on the Hek293t normal cell line (IC50 > 150 µM), suggesting their safety. Compound IId demonstrated significant activity against four cancer cell lines (26-65 µM). In vivo experiments revealed that five doses of IIc substantially reduced mice blood glucose levels from 252.2 mg/dL to 173.8 mg/dL in contrast to the control group. The compelling in vitro anticancer efficacy of IIc and its safety for normal cells underscores the need for further in vivo assessment of this promising compound. This research highlights the potential of benzodioxol derivatives as candidates for the future development of synthetic antidiabetic drugs.

Purpose: Patients' awareness toward VTE and thromboprophylaxis is critical for medication adherence. This study aimed to evaluate the patient's awareness and perception towards VTE and its prophylaxis and to assess patient's satisfaction towards the information given by the medical staff. Participants and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among hospitalized patients who received VTE prophylaxis in public and private hospitals in Sana'a, Yemen. Besides sociodemographic variables, participants' awareness and perception of VTE and its prophylaxis were evaluated. Variables' association with VTE awareness were analyzed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression using SPSS. Results: A total of 396 of the hospitalized patients agreed to participate in the study, with 31% (n = 121) have ever heard about VTE. The multivariable logistic regression findings revealed that the participants who did not have a profession had OR = 17.182 (P < 0.001) of being unaware of VTE compared with those who had one. Participants who did not have a personal history of VTE had OR = 7.580 (P < 0.001) of being unaware of DVT/PE compared with the participants who had a personal history of VTE. Male participants had OR = 2.839 (P < 0.005) of being unaware of DVT/PE compared with female participants. Participants who were illiterate had OR = 2.832 (P < 0.022) of being unaware of DVT/PE compared with participants with a higher level of education. Conclusion: The study revealed lack of awareness and perception of VTE and its prophylaxis among hospitalized patients in Yemen. The patients who are unaware of the disease have wrong perception about their role in DVT prophylaxis. Patient's education must be considered in healthcare setting to improve patient's health outcomes.

Background: Coinfection with bacteria, fungi, and respiratory viruses has been described as a factor associated with more severe clinical outcomes in children with COVID-19. Such coinfections in children with COVID-19 have been reported to increase morbidity and mortality. Objectives: To identify the type and proportion of coinfections with SARS-CoV-2 and bacteria, fungi, and/or respiratory viruses, and investigate the severity of COVID-19 in children. Methods: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched ProQuest, Medline, Embase, PubMed, CINAHL, Wiley online library, Scopus, and Nature through the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for studies on the incidence of COVID-19 in children with bacterial, fungal, and/or respiratory coinfections, published from 1 December 2019 to 1 October 2022, with English language restriction. Results: Of the 169 papers that were identified, 130 articles were included in the systematic review (57 cohort, 52 case report, and 21 case series studies) and 34 articles (23 cohort, eight case series, and three case report studies) were included in the meta-analysis. Of the 17,588 COVID-19 children who were tested for co-pathogens, bacterial, fungal, and/or respiratory viral coinfections were reported (n = 1633, 9.3%). The median patient age ranged from 1.4 months to 144 months across studies. There was an increased male predominance in pediatric COVID-19 patients diagnosed with bacterial, fungal, and/or viral coinfections in most of the studies (male gender: n = 204, 59.1% compared to female gender: n = 141, 40.9%). The majority of the cases belonged to White (Caucasian) (n = 441, 53.3%), Asian (n = 205, 24.8%), Indian (n = 71, 8.6%), and Black (n = 51, 6.2%) ethnicities. The overall pooled proportions of children with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 who had bacterial, fungal, and respiratory viral coinfections were 4.73% (95% CI 3.86 to 5.60, n = 445, 34 studies, I2 85%, p < 0.01), 0.98% (95% CI 0.13 to 1.83, n = 17, six studies, I2 49%, p < 0.08), and 5.41% (95% CI 4.48 to 6.34, n = 441, 32 studies, I2 87%, p < 0.01), respectively. Children with COVID-19 in the ICU had higher coinfections compared to ICU and non-ICU patients, as follows: respiratory viral (6.61%, 95% CI 5.06−8.17, I2 = 0% versus 5.31%, 95% CI 4.31−6.30, I2 = 88%) and fungal (1.72%, 95% CI 0.45−2.99, I2 = 0% versus 0.62%, 95% CI 0.00−1.55, I2 = 54%); however, COVID-19 children admitted to the ICU had a lower bacterial coinfection compared to the COVID-19 children in the ICU and non-ICU group (3.02%, 95% CI 1.70−4.34, I2 = 0% versus 4.91%, 95% CI 3.97−5.84, I2 = 87%). The most common identified virus and bacterium in children with COVID-19 were RSV (n = 342, 31.4%) and Mycoplasma pneumonia (n = 120, 23.1%). Conclusion: Children with COVID-19 seem to have distinctly lower rates of bacterial, fungal, and/or respiratory viral coinfections than adults. RSV and Mycoplasma pneumonia were the most common identified virus and bacterium in children infected with SARS-CoV-2. Knowledge of bacterial, fungal, and/or respiratory viral confections has potential diagnostic and treatment implications in COVID-19 children.

Monitoring of surface waters for organic contaminants is costly. Grab water sampling often results in non-detects for organic contaminants due to missing a pulse event or analytical instrumentation limitations with a small sample size. Continuous Low-Level Aquatic Monitoring (CLAM) samplers (C.I.Agent® Solutions) continually extract and concentrate organic contaminants in surface water onto a solid phase extraction disk. Utilizing CLAM samplers, we developed a broad spectrum analytical screen for monitoring organic contaminants in urban runoff. An intermediate polarity solid phase, hydrophobic/lipophilic balance (HLB), was chosen as the sorbent for the CLAM to target a broad range of compounds. Eighteen urban-use pesticides and pesticide degradates were targeted for analysis by LC/MS/MS, with recoveries between 59 and 135% in laboratory studies. In field studies, CLAM samplers were deployed at discrete time points from February 2015 to March 2016. Half of the targeted chemicals were detected with reporting limits up to 90 times lower than routine 1-L grab samples with good precision between field replicates. In a final deployment, CLAM samplers were compared to 1-L water samples. In this side-by-side comparison, imidacloprid, fipronil, and three fipronil degradates were detected by the CLAM sampler but only imidacloprid and fipronil sulfone were detected in the water samples. However, concentrations of fipronil sulfone and imidacloprid were significantly lower with the CLAM and a transient spike of diuron was not detected. Although the CLAM sampler has limitations, it can be a powerful tool for development of more focused and informed monitoring efforts based on pre-identified targets in the field.
