We report an unusual case of simultaneous occurrence of peritonsillar abscess due to Streptococcus viridans with an aneurism of the internal carotid artery. Inflammation caused by the abscess was so marked that its operative treatment unexpectedly uncovered the aneurism. We believe that the aneurism probably resulted from lymphatic spread of inflammation. Although rarely occurring, such aneurisms are clinically very important: the danger of misinterpreting symptoms as those of a peritonsillar or retropharyngeal abscess is great, as is that of bleeding caused by incising an abscess overlying the aneurism. This is particularly important in children due to the frequent occurrence of tonsil infections in this age group. The differential diagnosis of posterior or lateral pharyngeal swellings in children does not generally include aneurisms since these seldom occur in children and are overall rare in occurrence.

A modification of the Hertig method for reconstruction of the lower lip is reported. The method is suitable for repair of lateral defects of the lower lip, and was performed in 10 patients. The procedure is technically simple to perform, and yeilds good functional and cosmetic results.

The present case report is concerned with a clinico-pathological study, including ultrastructural investigation, of a rare and uncommon laryngeal tumour, a chemodectoma, in a 62 year old patient. There have been 23 cases of laryngeal chemodectomas reported in the literature, and only three of them, including our own report, were investigated by electron microscopy. The tumours arise from the superior and inferior larynegeal nonchromaffin paraganglia or possibly from Kultschitzky-cells of the normal bronchial mucosa. Ultrastructurally they have all the characteristics of apudomas whose parent cells (APUD-cells), usually show endocrine function and probably have their origin in the neural crest. The tumours show an aggressive type of behaviour, despite usually benign histological features when compared to chemodectomas at other sites in the head and neck region. Surgery is thus the therapy of choice.

The lacrimal sac as such is sacrificed in Falk's extra-nasal dacrocystorhinostomy. It is opened along its entire extent and embedded in toto into the lateral nasal wall. This procedure proved to be successful in most kinds of lacrimal duct stenosis. Its indications have now been extended to include those with obliteration of the lacrimal canaliculi and where the sac is itself obliterated. In such cases a thin silicone tube passed into the lower lacrimal punctum through the inferion lacrimal canaliculus and into the nose.

The lacrimal sac is totally sacrificed and rebuilt into an accessory nasal sinus using the extranasal dacryocystorhinostomy in the treatment of nasolacrimal duct stenosis as described by Falk in 1961. Using this method, 62 patients with tear duct stenoses were operated in our clinic since 1959. According to etiology, the stenoses were in 5 cases connatal, in 17 traumatic, in 32 inflammatory and in 8 iatrogenic. In only 4 cases (6,4%) failures were reported. - the operative indication has at present been expanded to include stenosis of the lower tear ducts (presaccal stenosis) or in cases where the lacrimal sac has been obliterated (saccal stenosis). In these cases the stenosis is dissected and a silicon tube (introduced via the tear point into the inferior lacrimal duct and drained into the nose) is left in position.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes have the ability to transfer cellular immunity. In this study, we investigated whether human tonsil lymphocytes could transfer cellular immunity. Human tonsil lymphocyte ultrafiltrates, after separation through gel filtration, showed five fractions in Sephadex-G-10, as well as four in Sephadex-G-25,4. The extracts and the fractions have characteristic biochemical as well as biological properties. The biological activity of ultrafiltrates from human tonsil lymphocytes was compared with the activity of ultrafiltrates prepared from human peripheral blood lymphocytes, for identification studies of a 'Transfer Factor' from human tonsils. Ultrafiltrates prepared from human peripheral blood lymphocytes (Ascher et al., 1976) and tested, showed similar biochemical and biological properties.
