RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The inappropriate use of antibiotics significantly contributes to the development of antibiotic resistance. There is limited information about the use of antibiotics among parents from rural areas in Peru. This study aimed to describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices towards antibiotics among parents of children < 5 years of age from rural communities in Peru; to explore the association between knowledge and attitudes towards antibiotics and to explore determinants of low knowledge and self-medicating his/her child with antibiotics. METHODS: Cross-sectional study in six rural primary health centres in Peru using a self-administered survey. Crude and adjusted Prevalence Ratios (PR), and 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI) were calculated to explore determinants of low knowledge and of having self-medicated his/her child with antibiotics. Linear regression was used to explore the association between knowledge and attitudes. RESULTS: A total of 231 parents were included. The largest gap in knowledge was among 183 parents (79%) who did not know that antibiotics cannot cure viral infections. The largest gap in attitudes was among 185 participants (80%) that did not disagree with "If I want my child to receive antibiotics, I would not be satisfied if the doctor refuses to prescribe them". More than half of parents (n = 120, 52%) reported having self-medicated his/her child with antibiotics. A positive correlation was found between knowledge and attitudes (Coefficient 0.53, 95% CI 0.38-0.68) after adjusting for the age and the education of the parent. Parents who were < 20 years old were more likely to have low knowledge about antibiotics (crude PR 2.39, 95% CI 1.32-4.34) compared to those aged > 40 years. Parents who had self-medicated his/her child with antibiotics (n = 120, 52%) were more likely to have purchased antibiotics without prescription (aPR 2.70, 95% CI 1.74-4.19) and to have received antibiotics after the recommendation of a pharmacist (aPR 1.79, 95% CI 1.13-2.82). CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge about antibiotics among parents from rural settings in Peru is limited and highlights the need for educational interventions. Public health policies to limit the acquisition of antibiotics without prescription should be implemented.

RESUMO

The objective of this review was to provide guidelines regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the most common infectious diseases in children during natural disasters, including floods such as those that occurred in the summer of 2017 in Peru. This instrument should be used by physicians and health personnel working in primary health care. The management of diarrheal, respiratory, skin, and eye diseases, vector-transmitted diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, and zoonoses such as leptospirosis is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the essential aspects of health education for the population, particularly preventive health, including the use of potable water, breastfeeding, immunization, hand washing, and vector control.

Cross-sectional study describing preferences and satisfaction towards a cervical cancer screening program with selfadministered rapid tests for the detection of human papillomavirus (HPV). Of 2 090 users picked by the program in Ventanilla Callao - Peru, 97 were randomly selected to be surveyed. In addition, interviews were conducted with women leaders of the community, in charge of providing the evidence. 74.2% of the users felt, at least, satisfied with the program. 68% of women prefer to take the test, mainly by demanding less time. Of women who prefer to take the test at the Health Center, 90.3% do so for the safety of the test being done correctly. The inclusion of community leaders in the program allowed a good diffusion of the test and the steps to carry it out.

The photokilling activity of 5-[4-N-(2',6'-dinitro-4'-trifluoromethylphenyl) aminophenyl]-10,15,20-tris(2,4,6-trimethoxy phenyl) porphyrin (CF3) was evaluated on a Hep-2 human larynx-carcinoma cell line. An apoptotic mechanism of cell death was found at low irradiation doses. Pharmacokinetic and tumour-photosensitizing properties were studied in mice. The results show that a different mechanism of cell death can be induced depending on the irradiation doses in the photodynamic treatments with CF3, which makes this agent an interesting sensitizer for potential tumour photosensitizer.

RESUMO

Factors such as charge, aggregation and lipophilicity influence photosensitiser localisation. The lipophilic octasubstituted sensitiser 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(decyloxy)phthalocyaninato zinc(II) was incorporated into liposomes of dimyristoyl-L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC), non-ionic micelles of Tween 80 and the hydrosoluble polymer Solutol HS 15 in order to investigate how these different environments affect the photophysical properties and phototoxicity of the photosensitiser. Fluorescence quantum yields and singlet molecular oxygen generation are enhanced in the presence of Solutol HS 15. Phototoxicities were calculated by employing a concentration of 10(-7) M of the dye against the Hep-2 cell line, which showed a viability of 53 and 30% in DMPC and Solutol HS 15, respectively. After 24 h of photodynamic therapy with 15 min irradiation, apoptotic and necrotic cells were observed.
