BACKGROUND: Gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTDs) are related to trophoblasts, and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is secreted by GTDs as well as normal placentas. However, the asparagine-linked sugar chains on hCG contain abnormal biantennary structures in invasive mole and choriocarcinoma, but not normal pregnancy or hydatidiform mole. N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase-IV (GnT-IV) catalyses ß1,4-N-acetylglucosamine branching on asparagine-linked oligosaccharides, which are consistent with the abnormal sugar chain structures on hCG. METHODS: We investigated GnT-IVa expression in GTDs and placentas by immunohistochemistry, western blot, and RT-PCR. We assessed the effects of GnT-IVa knockdown in choriocarcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: The GnT-IVa was highly expressed in trophoblasts of invasive mole and choriocarcinoma, and moderately in extravillous trophoblasts during the first trimester, but not in hydatidiform mole or other normal trophoblasts. The GnT-IVa knockdown in choriocarcinoma cells significantly reduced migration and invasive capacities, and suppressed cellular adhesion to extracellular matrix proteins. The extent of ß1,4-N-acetylglucosamine branching on ß1 integrin was greatly reduced by GnT-IVa knockdown, although the expression of ß1 integrin was not changed. In vivo studies further demonstrated that GnT-IVa knockdown suppressed tumour engraftment and growth. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that GnT-IVa is involved in regulating invasion of choriocarcinoma through modifications of the oligosaccharide chains of ß1 integrin.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study investigated the accuracy and usefulness of a newly improved three-dimensional measurement system for measuring the volume and circumference at the foot as well as at the calf and ankle. METHODS: Regarding the newly improved device, halogen light was projected from four directions instead of the conventional two directions. The circumference and volume were measured in the morning and evening with and without elastic stockings in 23 healthy subjects. RESULTS: The average circumference at the foot calculated using the 'average method', in which the circumference of the foot was measured in 10 places every 1 mm and the values were averaged, significantly increased in the evening compared with in the morning. When stockings were applied, the significant differences in the circumference or volume between the morning and evening disappeared at all sites of the leg. CONCLUSION: The newly improved three-dimensional measurement system incorporating the halogen light from four directions, in which the foot circumference was calculated using an 'average method', was reliable and useful for evaluating edema at the foot as well as at the calf and ankle. The beneficial effect of elastic stockings on edema prevention was observed at all sites of the leg.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the mechanism of intermediate- and high-level echinocandin resistance, resulting from heterozygous and homozygous mutations in GSC1 (FKS1), in both laboratory-generated and clinical isolates of Candida albicans. METHODS: The DNA sequences of the entire open reading frames of GSC1, GSL1 (FKS3) and RHO1, which may contribute to the beta-1,3-glucan synthase of a micafungin-susceptible strain and a resistant clinical isolate, were compared. A spontaneous heterozygous mutant isolated by selection for micafungin resistance, and a panel of laboratory-generated homozygous and heterozygous mutants that possessed combinations of the echinocandin-susceptible and -resistant alleles, or mutants with individual GSC1 alleles deleted, were used to compare levels of echinocandin resistance and inhibition of glucan synthase activity. RESULTS: DNA sequence analysis identified a mutation, S645P, in both alleles of GSC1 from the clinical isolate. GSL1 had two homozygous amino acid changes and five non-synonymous nucleotide polymorphisms due to allelic variation. The predicted amino acid sequence of Rho1p was conserved between strains. Reconstruction of the heterozygous (S645/S645F) and homozygous (S645F/S645F) mutation showed that the homozygous mutation conferred a higher level of micafungin resistance (4 mg/L) than the heterozygous mutation (1 mg/L). Exposure of the heterozygous mutant to micafungin resulted in a loss of heterozygosity. Kinetic analysis of beta-1,3-glucan synthase activity showed that the homozygous and heterozygous mutations gave echinocandin susceptibility profiles that correlated with their MIC values. CONCLUSIONS: A homozygous hot-spot mutation in GSC1, caused by mutation in one allele and then loss of heterozygosity, is required for high-level echinocandin resistance in C. albicans. Both alleles of GSC1 contribute equally and independently to beta-1,3-glucan synthase activity.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) provides a high en bloc resection rate with less invasiveness than surgical resection for large or scarring gastrointestinal neoplasms. However, detailed outcomes in colorectal ESD are still lacking. The aim of our study was to elucidate short- and long-term outcomes of colorectal ESD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 310 consecutive colorectal epithelial neoplasms (146 adenomas, 164 carcinomas), in 290 patients, which fulfilled our indication criteria and were treated with ESD between July 2000 and December 2008 were studied. ESD was done by three skilled endoscopists. As short-term outcomes, rates of en bloc resection, en bloc plus R0 resection, and major complications were analyzed. As long-term outcomes, disease-free and overall survival were assessed in 224 patients. RESULTS: Rates of en bloc resection and en bloc plus R0 resection were 90.3 % and 74.5 %, respectively. Eight patients underwent additional colectomy due to histopathologically proven possible node-positive cancer. Intraoperative perforations occurred with 14 lesions (4.5 %), which were treated successfully only by endoscopic clipping. Emergent surgery was needed for one case of postoperative perforation. Blood transfusion due to intraoperative massive bleeding was required in 1 case (0.3 %). Postoperative bleeding occurred with four lesions (1.3 %), and was endoscopically managed without blood transfusion. Local recurrence was detected in 4 lesions (4/202 patients, 2.0 %); resection had been piecemeal in all 4. During a median follow-up of 38.7 months (range 12.8 - 104.2), the 3- and 5-year overall/disease-specific survivals were 97.1/100 % and 95.3/100 %, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Colorectal ESD showed favorable long-term outcomes. It may largely replace colectomy for node-negative colorectal epithelial neoplasia.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Although endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is becoming accepted as an established treatment for superficial esophageal squamous cell neoplasms, the risks for developing postoperative stricture have not been elucidated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study at a single institution. From January 2002 to October 2008, 65 patients with high-grade intraepithelial neoplasms (HGINs) or m2 carcinomas treated by ESD were enrolled. Predictors of postoperative stricture were investigated by comparing results from 11 patients who developed strictures with those from 54 patients who did not. RESULTS: Significant differences between the two groups were observed in longitudinal diameter (45.0 +/- 15.9 mm vs. 31.5 +/- 13.6 mm) and circumferential diameter (37.2 +/- 8.6 mm vs. 26.8 +/- 9.7 mm) of the resected specimens, and the proportion of extension to the whole circumference of the lumen (< 1 / 2/ > 1 / 2/ > 3 / 4 : 2 / 4 / 5 vs. 40 / 13 / 1), histologic depth (HGIN/m2 : 2 / 9 vs. 41 / 13), and procedure time (85.6 +/- 42.8 minutes vs. 53.3 +/- 30.1 minutes). Multivariate analysis revealed that circumferential extension of > 3 / 4 (odds ration [OR]: 44.2; 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 4.4 - 443.6) and histologic depth to m2 (OR: 14.2; 95 %CI: 2.7 - 74.2) are reliable risk factors. Subanalysis for each category by combinations of these risk factors revealed that patients with lesions in > 3 / 4 of the circumferential area were associated with a high rate of postoperative stricture. By contrast, patients with HGIN lesions in < 3 / 4 extension have no probability of postoperative strictures. Additionally, subanalysis of patients with m2 lesions in < 3 / 4 circumferential extension revealed that circumferential diameter can be a reliable predictor for postoperative stricture. CONCLUSIONS: Circumferential extension and histologic depth are the reliable risk factors for postoperative strictures. In combination with circumferential diameter, we can perform effective and appropriate preventive balloon dilatations after esophageal ESD.

Breastfeeding is important for mammals, providing immunological and microbiological advantages to neonates, together with the nutritional supply from the mother. However, the mechanisms of this functional diversity in the mammary gland remain poorly characterized. Here, we show that, similar to the gastrointestinal tract, the mammary gland develops immune and microbial environments consisting of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and the microflora, respectively, both of which are important for protecting neonates and the mother from infectious diseases. The IgA production and microflora development are coordinated in the gastrointestinal tract but seem to be independently regulated in the mammary gland. In particular, the chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 28 and poly-Ig receptor, crucial molecules for the IgA production in milk, were expressed normally in germ-free lactating mice but were almost undetectable in postweaning mothers, regardless of the microflora presence. Our findings offer insights into potentially improving the quality of breastfeeding, using both immunological and microbiological approaches.

A new screening assay for anticancer agents was established using an in vivo nude mouse model. Assessment of the chemosensitivity of individual human tumors was determined by [3H]thymidine incorporation by the treated tumors. Three hundred and thirty tumors derived from cancer patients were transplanted into nude mice s.c. and treated with anticancer agents. Mitomycin C, 5-fluorouracil, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin were used in the present studies. In 270 of 330 cancers, chemosensitivity was evaluated by this method (evaluable rate, 81.8%). The rate of positive sensitivity against all tumors was 21.9% in mitomycin C, 12.2% in 5-fluorouracil, 27.4% in cyclophosphamide, and 23.6% in doxorubicin, respectively. The tumor sensitivity to anticancer agents varied according to the type of cancer. Retrospective and prospective clinical studies were performed to determine the usefulness of the nude mouse-isotope assay for the prediction of tumor sensitivity. The 24-month survival rates of 24 gastric cancer patients treated with tumor-sensitive agents was significantly higher than that of 28 patients treated with tumor-resistant agents. The end results after chemotherapy in far-advanced and inoperable terminal cases of gastrointestinal cancers was also investigated, prospectively. Out of 19 cases, the 50% survival time of 11 patients treated with tumor-sensitive agents was longer than that of eight patients treated with tumor-resistant agents. From prospective correlative studies carried out on 25 patients, this assay correlated with clinical responses (overall agreement, 76.0%; P less than 0.05) with specific agreements of sensitivity and resistance of 37.5 and 94.1%, respectively. From these results, it seems reasonable to conclude that nude mouse-isotope assay is a screening assay to identify appropriate agents for the treatment of patients with cancer. However, there is still a need to develop a better protocol in this assay, especially for antimetabolites, and to continue research in order to find more sufficient assays to predict clinical sensitivity to anticancer agents.

We previously reported that rolling Nagoya mice carrying a mutation in the α1 subunit of the Cav2.1 channel protective from ischemia- and kainate-induced neuronal damage. However, the protective effect of this mutation and its relationship to brain injury recovery have not been examined. To examine the relationship between Cav2.1 channel function and brain injury, we induced cryogenic brain damage in homozygous rolling Nagoya (rol/rol), control wild-type (+/+), ω-agatoxin IVA-pretreated +/+ (ω-aga +/+), and ω-agatoxin IVA-post-treated +/+ (ω-aga-post-treated +/+) mice. We measured the lesion area, blood brain-barrier permeability and performed immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis. The lesions of rol/rol and ω-aga +/+ mice were significantly smaller than those observed in +/+ mice at both day 1 and day 7 after injury. Similar results were shown in blood-brain barrier permeability. We observed more reactive astrogliosis in +/+ mice than in rol/rol or ω-aga +/+ mice. rol/rol and ω-aga +/+ mice had fewer degenerating cells due to cryogenic injury than did +/+ mice at both day 1 and day 7. ω-Aga-post-treated +/+ mice 24h after injury were sacrificed on day 7. The lesions were smaller in ω-aga-post-treated +/+ mice than those in vehicle-treated +/+ mice. We also examined phosphorylated p38 (pp38) at the injured site. ω-Aga-post-treated +/+ mouse brain slices showed weak pp38 signal; vehicle-treated +/+ mouse brain slices were pp38-positive. These findings demonstrate that the mutant Cav2.1 channel exerts a protective effect against cryogenic brain injury in rolling Nagoya mice. Our results indicate that inhibitors of the Cav2.1-dependent p38 signaling cascade would be useful as therapeutic agents in the treatment of brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Whether proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) relieve heartburn or precordial pain after endoscopic resection (ER) for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of PPI therapy for these symptoms after ER for ESCC. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter prospective randomized controlled trial among 15 hospitals in Japan. In total, 229 patients with cT1a ESCC were randomly assigned to receive PPI therapy for 5 weeks after ER (the PPI group, n = 115) or follow-up without PPI therapy (the non-PPI group, n = 114). The primary end point was the incidence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)-like symptoms after ER from a self-reported questionnaire (Frequency Scale for Symptoms of GERD). Secondary end points were ulcer healing rate at 5 weeks, incidence of pain, improvement rate of symptoms in those who started PPI therapy because of GERD-like symptoms in the non-PPI group, and adverse events. RESULTS: No significant difference was observed in the incidence of GERD-like symptoms after ER between the non-PPI and PPI groups (30 % vs 34 %, respectively). No significant differences were observed in the ulcer healing rate at 5 weeks (84 % vs 85 %) and incidence of pain within 1 week (36 % vs 45 %). In nine of ten patients (90 %) who started PPI therapy because of GERD-like symptoms in the non-PPI group, PPI administration relieved GERD-like symptoms. No adverse events related to PPI administration were observed. CONCLUSION: PPI therapy is not efficacious in reducing symptoms and did not promote healing of ulcers in patients undergoing ER for ESCC.

This study investigated, mechanically and morphologically, whether the dentin surface irradiated by CO2 laser could be a possible adherent when bonded with simplified-step adhesives. Buccal enamel and cementum of extracted human premolars were removed to expose a flat dentin surface. The dentin surfaces were irradiated continuously with CO2 laser at 1.0 W. Before bonding with either a single-bottle adhesive (Single Bond) or a self-etching priming system (Mega Bond), the irradiated dentin surface was treated as follows: no treatment, NaHCO3 powder abrasion and wet-grinding with 600-grit SiC paper. The treated dentin surfaces were bonded to resin composite with either of the two adhesives. Non-irradiated dentin surfaces were also used as control. Resin bonded specimens were stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours and subjected to microtensile bond test. Additionally, to observe the resin/irradiated dentin interface, resin-bonded specimens were similarly prepared, sectioned into slabs, embedded in epoxy resin, polished with diamond pastes, sputter coated Au-Pd and examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After SEM observation, the specimens were further polished with diamond paste to remove the Au-Pd sputter-coat, immersed in HCL and NaOCl and finally observed by SEM again. In the presence of carbonized dentin, microtensile bond strength drastically decreased but recovered to the control value by removing the carbonized dentin layer visually with SiC paper for both adhesive systems. However, the laser-affected dentin that remained on the bonded interface was easily dissolved with NaOCl and HCl.

Trichophyton Mentagrophytes was investigated for macroconidial development with particular emphasis on the conidial ageing by light and scanning electron microscopy. Macroconidial germination was also studied under various conditions. Sabouraud glucose agar supplemented with 3% NaCl was used to enhance production of macroconidia. After a long-term cultivation macroconidial compartments changed to spherical thick-walled structure. Some 12-month-old macroconidia were still capable of germination. A wide range of temperature (15-37 degrees C), and inoculum of less than 1 X 10(5) conidia per ml of rich media were appropriate for macroconidial germination. The germination process of macroconidia was highly tolerant to NaCl. A small fraction of the conidia were able to germinate even in distilled water without activation. Effect of freeze-thaw or ultraviolet irradiation on macroconidial germination was determined.

The ascending projections of the inferior colliculus (IC) in the cat were traced by the autoradiographic method, with special reference in the differenial projections of each subnucleus of IC. The laminated ventrolateral part of the central nucleus of IC (CNv) projects to the ventral and medial divisions of the ipsilateral medial geniculate body (MGB). The projections to the ventral division are topographically organized in the mediolateral direction, the terminals being arranged in the form of lamina, while those to the medial division are diffuse. The unlaminated dorsomedial part of the central nucleus of IC (CNd) sends fibers to every division of the ipsilateral MGB, particularly to the dorsal division and the ventromedial portion of the ventral division. It is noteworthy that the external nucleus of IC (EN) projects to the superior colliculus, part of the pretectum, and the anterior extremity of MGB ipsilaterally, in addition to the ventral and medial divisions of MGB. The posterior cap of IC, regarded as the pericentral nucleus of IC (PC), projects ipsilaterally to the ventral part of the caudal tip of MGB and the posterior part of the suprapeduncular nucleus. In addition of these projections, the parabrachial region and interstitial nucleus of the brachium of IC (BIC) are identified as common targets of projections of each nucleus of IC on the ipsilateral side. Contralaterally, every subnucleus of IC except for PC projects via the commissure of IC to areas corresponding to the targets of the ipsilateral projections, such as the ventral and medial divisions of MGB and the parabrachial region and the interstitial nucleus of BIC, although these contraleral projections are in general much sparser than those ipsilateral. Intrinsic and commissural connections within IC are also revealed in this study, providing characteristic configurations of each subnucleus of IC. It is concluded that the ascending projections of IC in the cat are highly differentially organized according to its subnucleus.

The thalamic projections to the hippocampal formation and to the subicular and entorhinal areas in the cat have been studied with retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to HRP (WGA-HRP) and anterograde transport of WGA-HRP. Retrograde transport tracers injected in various parts of these cortices resulted in labeled cells in the midline, anterior, and lateral dorsal nuclei. Injections into the hippocampal formation or the subiculum led to retrograde labeling of cells in the reuniens nucleus of the ipsilateral thalamus throughout its rostrocaudal extent, whereas the restricted injections into the dentate gyrus and the inferior region of the hippocampus led to no labeling. Following an injection into the pre- and parasubiculum, a large number of labeled cells were seen not only in the reuniens nucleus but in other midline nuclei. In addition, a substantial number of labeled cells were also detected in the anterior and lateral dorsal nuclei, particularly in the anterodorsal nucleus, which contained densely arranged labeled cells throughout almost the entire rostrocaudal extent. An injection into the medial entorhinal area labeled a number of cells in the anterior nuclei and in the reuniens nucleus, particularly its dorsal part. Injections into various subdivisions of the lateral entorhinal area yielded different patterns of distribution of labeled cells in the thalamic nuclei. An injection into the ventromedial division (VMEA) led to abundant labeling of cells in the paraventricular and reuniens nuclei. After an injection into the ventral division (VLEA), numerous labeled cells were detected in the reuniens nucleus and a lesser number in the paraventricular nucleus at anterior levels. When an injection was made into the dorsal division (DLEA), a large number of labeled cells were detected in the reuniens nucleus, and less numerous labeled cells were found in the central medial nucleus. There appears to be a topographic arrangement of cortical projections of the reuniens nucleus. The pre- and parasubiculum receive projections from the most medial part of the reuniens nucleus near the midline, and the DLEA receives projections from the medial part of the nucleus. The cells projecting to the VLEA and MEA are distributed in the central part of the reuniens nucleus, and those to the VMEA are distributed in the lateral part. Anterograde experiments were also performed; injections of WGA-HRP into the reuniens nucleus resulted in terminal labeling in the superficial layers of the subicular area and the neighboring hippocampus and in the entorhinal area.

In view of the profound growth failure resulting from renal insufficiency and uraemia, the present studies were designed to specifically investigate food efficiency and the pattern of GH secretion under these conditions. Animals were made uraemic by 5/6 nephrectomy (Nx) and feeding a high-protein diet. Three groups of animals were studied: uraemic (Ur); sham-operated, fed ad libitum (Sh); and sham-operated pair-fed with the uraemics (PF). Food intake per 100 g body weight and food efficiency (g weight gained per g food consumed) were calculated. Fourteen days after 5/6 Nx, blood samples were taken via intra-atrial catheters at 10-min intervals over a period of 6 h. GH was measured in plasma by radioimmunoassay. GH pulsatility was analysed by multiple parameter deconvolution. The growth rate of Ur animals was significantly lower than that of Sh. The body weights of the Ur animals were also lower than PF due to an initial period of weight loss. Both Sh and PF animals showed the typical negative slope of food intake as body weight increased. In contrast, the Ur animals showed a positive slope of food intake. The lower rate of growth and the elevated food intake corresponded to a decreased food efficiency for the Ur group. Deconvolution analysis of pulsatile GH release demonstrated a significant increase in GH half-life in the Ur animals. The amplitude and mass of GH secretory pulses were decreased, whereas the number of detectable secretory bursts was increased. These changes were specific to uraemia with respect to half-life and number of pulses.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Spinach ferredoxin was trinitrophenylated by reaction with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonate. Four amino groups in the ferredoxin could be modified of the total of five amino groups. The trinitrophenylated ferredoxin formed a complex with ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase just as native ferredoxin did. The modified ferredoxin also retained the activity of electron transport in the cytochrome c photoreduction system of chloroplasts, but could neither donate electrons to ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase in the NADP+ photoreduction system, nor accept electrons from the reductase in the NADPH-cytochrome c reduction system in vitro. Furthermore, it lost the inhibitory effect against the NADPH-diaphorase activity of the reductase. These results suggest that the complex formation of ferredoxin with ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase is a phenomenon essentially independent of the function of electron transport between the two proteins.

During the recent 5 2/3 years, hepatic resection was performed on 118 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Ages ranged from 17 to 78 years with an average of 57 years. There were 101 males and 17 females. Underlying cirrhosis of the liver was found in 101 cases, and chronic hepatitis was found in 16 cases. Before surgery 62 patients had 71 associated conditions such as esophageal varices, diabetes mellitus, cholelithiasis, or peptic ulcer. Operations for the varices and cholelithiasis were performed simultaneously with hepatic resection in 15 and six patients, respectively. The operative mortality rate within 1 month was 7.6%, and the overall in-hospital death rate was 14.4%. In 94 patients with curative resection, the 2-year survival rate was 81.2% in patients without cirrhosis and 55.4% in patients with cirrhosis. The 4-year survival rate was 81.2% in the former and 34.8% in the latter group. The prognosis was significantly better in patients without cirrhosis than in those with cirrhosis. On the contrary, 21 of 24 patients with palliative resection died within 2 years despite extensive chemotherapy. The present results may indicate that the resectability rate of hepatocellular carcinoma is currently increasing, even in the presence of cirrhosis of the liver due to early detection of the tumor by current advances in diagnostic methods and also that major hepatic resection is possible in selected patients with cirrhosis.

Expression of the Candida albicans vacuolar aspartic proteinase (APR1) and beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase (HEX1) genes was studied when carbon-starved cells of strains ATCC 10261 and A72 were induced to grow as yeast or as germ tube-forming cells. Amounts of APR1 mRNA were similar under yeast or germ tube growth conditions. However, more APR1 mRNA was present in cells grown at 28 degrees C than in cells grown at 37 degrees C. The Apr1 enzyme activity of cell-free extracts was not affected by cellular morphology, culture pH or growth temperature. Amounts of HEX1 mRNA were also higher in N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)-induced cells grown at 28 degrees C than in cells grown at 37 degrees C. There was slightly more HEX1 mRNA in cells grown at pH 4.5 than in cells grown at pH 6.7. The beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase activities of GlcNAc-grown cells correlated with the amounts of HEX1 mRNA and were higher when cells were grown at a lower temperature and at a lower pH. Although a similar temperature- and pH-dependent pattern of HEX1 mRNA expression was seen in cells grown on glucose, the enzyme activities in cell-free extracts were all very low. These data indicate that the APR1 and HEX1 genes play no direct role in the dimorphic transition of C. albicans and that transcription of both genes appears to be temperature regulated when the cells are released from carbon starvation. The expression of HEX1 mRNA is in part under the control of culture pH and translation of HEX1 mRNA seems to be regulated by glucose.

Thalamic afferents to the limbic cortex in the cat were studied with the method of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. The anterior limbic region receives fibers largely from the anteromedial nucleus and partly from the anterodorsal and anteroventral nuclei. There appears to be a dorsoventral organization of cortical projections of the anteromedial nucleus to the anterior limbic region. The cingular area has its main input from the anteroventral and anteromedial nuclei. The lower bank and fundus of the splenial sulcus receive fibers from the anteroventral nucleus, particularly its parvocellular part. The retrosplenial area receives projections from the naterodorsal, anteroventral and anteromedial nuclei. The agranular retrosplenial area (area 30) recieves hardly any fibers from the anterior thalamic nuclei. The postsubicular and presubicular areas receive cortical afferents from the anterodorsal, anteroventral (both magnocellular and parvocellular parts) and anteromedial nuclei. In addition, the limbic cortex receives many fibers from the dorsal lateral, medial pulvinar and lateral pulvinar nuclei, and few fibers from the intralaminar and midline nuclei.

Direct projections of the hypothalamic nuclei to the thalamic mediodorsal nucleus (MD) were studied using retrograde and anterograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-HRP. HRP and WGA-HRP were injected into the MD, thalamic paraventricular, lateral habenular and hypothalamic nuclei. The results indicate that the MD, particularly its medial part, receives a moderate amount of hypothalamic afferents, and that most of these afferents originate in the medial part of the lateral hypothalamic nucleus at anterior levels, while a limited number are derived from the dorsal, dorsomedial, ventromedial and anterior hypothalamic and lateral preoptic nuclei.

Thalamic afferents to layer 1 of the auditory cortex in the cat have been studied using retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. The magnocellular part of the medial geniculate nucleus sends fibers to layer 1 of the primary and secondary auditory areas and of the dorsal division of the posterior ectosylvian area. The dorsal principal part and the ventromedial portion of the ventral principal part send only a few fibers to layer 1 of these cortical areas.
