Agricultural intensification not only increases food production but also drives widespread biodiversity decline. Increasing landscape heterogeneity has been suggested to increase biodiversity across habitats, while increasing crop heterogeneity may support biodiversity within agroecosystems. These spatial heterogeneity effects can be partitioned into compositional (land-cover type diversity) and configurational heterogeneity (land-cover type arrangement), measured either for the crop mosaic or across the landscape for both crops and semi-natural habitats. However, studies have reported mixed responses of biodiversity to increases in these heterogeneity components across taxa and contexts. Our meta-analysis covering 6397 fields across 122 studies conducted in Asia, Europe, North and South America reveals consistently positive effects of crop and landscape heterogeneity, as well as compositional and configurational heterogeneity for plant, invertebrate, vertebrate, pollinator and predator biodiversity. Vertebrates and plants benefit more from landscape heterogeneity, while invertebrates derive similar benefits from both crop and landscape heterogeneity. Pollinators benefit more from configurational heterogeneity, but predators favour compositional heterogeneity. These positive effects are consistent for invertebrates and vertebrates in both tropical/subtropical and temperate agroecosystems, and in annual and perennial cropping systems, and at small to large spatial scales. Our results suggest that promoting increased landscape heterogeneity by diversifying crops and semi-natural habitats, as suggested in the current UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, is key for restoring biodiversity in agricultural landscapes.

Promoting urban green spaces is an effective strategy to increase biodiversity in cities. However, our understanding of how local and landscape factors influence trophic interactions in these urban contexts remains limited. Here, we sampled cavity-nesting bees and wasps and their natural enemies within 85 urban gardens in Zurich (Switzerland) to identify factors associated with the diversity and dissimilarity of antagonistic interactions in these communities. The proportions of built-up area and urban green area at small landscape scales (50 m radius), as well as the management intensity, sun exposure, plant richness and proportion of agricultural land at the landscape scale (250 m radius), were key drivers of interaction diversity. This increased interaction diversity resulted not only from the higher richness of host and natural enemy species, but also from species participating in more interactions. Furthermore, dissimilarity in community structure and interactions across gardens (beta-diversity) were primarily influenced by differences in built-up areas and urban green areas at the landscape scale, as well as by management intensity. Our study offers crucial insights for urban planning and conservation strategies, supporting sustainability goals by helping to understand the factors that shape insect communities and their trophic interactions in urban gardens.

The dynamics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission are influenced by a variety of factors, including social restrictions and the emergence of distinct variants. In this study, we delve into the origins and dissemination of the Alpha, Delta, and Omicron-BA.1 variants of concern in Galicia, northwest Spain. For this, we leveraged genomic data collected by the EPICOVIGAL Consortium and from the GISAID database, along with mobility information from other Spanish regions and foreign countries. Our analysis indicates that initial introductions during the Alpha phase were predominantly from other Spanish regions and France. However, as the pandemic progressed, introductions from Portugal and the United States became increasingly significant. The number of detected introductions varied from 96 and 101 for Alpha and Delta to 39 for Omicron-BA.1. Most of these introductions left a low number of descendants (<10), suggesting a limited impact on the evolution of the pandemic in Galicia. Notably, Galicia's major coastal cities emerged as critical hubs for viral transmission, highlighting their role in sustaining and spreading the virus. This research emphasizes the critical role of regional connectivity in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and offers essential insights for enhancing public health strategies and surveillance measures.

Understanding how anthropogenic activities induce changes in the functional traits of arthropod communities is critical to assessing their ecological consequences. However, we largely lack comprehensive assessments of the long-term impact of global-change drivers on the trait composition of arthropod communities across a large number of species and sites. This knowledge gap critically hampers our ability to predict human-driven impacts on communities and ecosystems. Here, we use a dataset of 1.73 million individuals from 877 species to study how four functionally important traits of carabid beetles and spiders (i.e. body size, duration of activity period, tolerance to drought, and dispersal capacity) have changed at the community level across ~40 years in different types of land use and as a consequence of land use changes (that is, urbanisation and loss of woody vegetation) at the landscape scale in Switzerland. The results show that the mean body size in carabid communities declined in all types of land use, with particularly stronger declines in croplands compared to forests. Furthermore, the length of the activity period and the tolerance to drought of spider communities decreased in most land use types. The average body size of carabid communities in landscapes with increased urbanisation in the last ~40 years tended to decrease. However, the length of the activity period, the tolerance to drought, and the dispersal capacity did not change significantly. Furthermore, urbanisation promoted increases in the average dispersal capacities of spider communities. Additionally, urbanisation favoured spider communities with larger body sizes and longer activity periods. The loss of woody areas at the landscape level was associated with trait shifts to carabid communities with larger body sizes, shorter activity periods, higher drought tolerances and strongly decreased dispersal capacities. Decreases in activity periods and dispersal capacities were also found in spider communities. Our study demonstrates that human-induced changes in land use alter key functional traits of carabid and spider communities in the long term. The detected trait shifts in arthropod communities likely have important consequences for their functional roles in ecosystems.

INTRODUCTION: Acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance continues globally as part of the World Health Organization's goal to eradicate poliomyelitis. The Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit (APSU), Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) network, and National Enterovirus Reference Laboratory (NERL) collaborate in AFP surveillance in Australia, capturing and reviewing cases of AFP for all aetiologies in order to exclude poliovirus. We aimed to describe the AFP epidemiology in childhood over an 11 year period. METHODS: Data were reported nationally by paediatricians via prospective APSU surveillance, PAEDS surveillance nurses at five tertiary paediatric hospitals and NERL from 2007 to 2017. Children aged 0-15 years with AFP were included. We combined APSU, PAEDS, and NERL datasets, analysed epidemiological trends, and described clinical features and investigations for major diagnoses. RESULTS: Of 590 AFP-compatible cases, 49% were male; 47% were aged 0-4 years, 9% aged <1 year. Annual incidence of AFP was 1.3 cases per 100,000 children aged <15 years. Lower limb paralysis was the most frequent presenting symptom. The most frequent diagnoses were Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS; 36%), transverse myelitis (TM; 17%), and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM; 15%). No secular trend was seen in frequency of AFP cases nor amongst major diagnoses. Seasonality was observed with ADEM occurring more frequently in winter. We observed periods of increased AFP frequency in 2013 and 2016, coinciding with increased reporting of non-polio anterior horn cell disease (AHCD) and detection of non-polio enterovirus (NPEV). CONCLUSIONS: Estimated incidence of GBS, ADEM, and TM in Australian children was comparable with international rates. There was stable incidence of AFP in Australian children between 2007 and 2017. GBS, ADEM, and TM are the major causes of AFP. We observed clustering of cases associated with NPEV that emphasises a need for ongoing vigilance in surveillance given continue emerging infectious disease threats.

Global-change drivers are increasing the rates of species extinction worldwide, posing a serious threat to ecosystem functioning. Preserving the functional diversity of species is currently a priority to mitigate abrupt biodiversity loss in the coming decades. Therefore, understanding what factors better predict functional diversity loss in bird assemblages at a global scale and how existing protected areas cover the most vulnerable regions is of key importance for conservation. We examined the environmental factors associated with the risk of functional diversity loss under 3 scenarios of bird species extinction based on species distribution range size, generation length, and International Union for the Conservation of Nature conservation status. Then, we identified regions that deserve special conservation focus. We also assessed how efficiently extant terrestrial protected areas preserve particularly vulnerable bird assemblages based on predicted scenarios of extinction risk. The vulnerability of bird functional diversity increased as net primary productivity, land-use diversity, mean annual temperature, and elevation decreased. Low values for these environmental factors were associated with a higher risk of functional diversity loss worldwide through two mechanisms: one independent of species richness that affects assemblages with low levels of niche packing and high functional dissimilarity among species, and the other that affects assemblages with low species richness and high rates of extinction. Existing protected areas ineffectively safeguarded regions with a high risk of losing functional diversity in the next decades. The global predictors and the underlying mechanisms of functional vulnerability in bird assemblages we identified can inform strategies aimed at preserving bird-driven ecological functions worldwide.


Cobertura de áreas protegidas en regiones vulnerables para conservar la diversidad funcional de aves Resumen Los factores causantes del cambio global están incrementando las tasas de extinción de especies a nivel mundial, convirtiéndose en una seria amenaza para el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. Actualmente, la preservación de la diversidad funcional de especies es una prioridad para mitigar la pérdida abrupta de biodiversidad en las próximas décadas. Por lo tanto, comprender cuáles son los factores que mejor predicen la pérdida de diversidad funcional en ensamblajes de aves a escala global y la protección de regiones vulnerables por las áreas protegidas existentes es de gran importancia para la conservación. En este estudio, examinamos los factores ambientales asociados con el riesgo de pérdida de diversidad funcional bajo 3 escenarios de extinción de especies de aves en base a: extensión del rango de distribución de las especies, la duración generacional y el estatus de conservación según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza y las regiones identificadas que ameritan esfuerzos de conservación especiales. También evaluamos la eficiencia de las áreas protegidas terrestres para preservar ensambles de aves particularmente vulnerables con base en los escenarios de riesgo de extinción pronosticados. La vulnerabilidad de la diversidad funcional incrementó a medida que disminuyó la productividad primaria neta, la diversidad de usos del suelo, la temperatura media anual y la altitud. Los valores bajos de estos factores ambientales se asociaron con un mayor riesgo de pérdida mundial de diversidad funcional a través de 2 mecanismos, uno independiente de la riqueza de especies que afecta a ensambles con bajos niveles de empaque de nichos y elevada disimilitud funcional entre especies y el otro que afecta a ensambles con baja riqueza de especies y altas tasas de extinción. Las áreas protegidas existentes no fueron efectivas para la salvaguarda de regiones con alto riesgo de perder diversidad funcional en las próximas décadas. Los predictores globales y los mecanismos subyacentes de la vulnerabilidad funcional en los ensambles de aves que identificamos pueden proporcionar información para definir estrategias enfocadas a la preservación de funciones ecológicas llevadas a cabo por aves a nivel mundial.

This work presents the characterization of the optical and mechanical properties of thin films based on (T a 2 O 5)1-x (S i O 2)x mixed oxides deposited by microwave plasma assisted co-sputtering, including post-annealing treatments. The deposition of low mechanical loss materials (3×10-5) with a high refractive index (1.93) while maintaining low processing costs was achieved and the following trends were demonstrated: The energy band gap increased as the S i O 2 concentration was increased in the mixture, and the disorder constant decreased when the annealing temperatures increased. Annealing of the mixtures also showed positive effects to reduce the mechanical losses and the optical absorption. This demonstrates their potential as an alternative high-index material for optical coatings in gravitational wave detectors using a low-cost process.

Coating thermal noise (CTN) in amorphous coatings is a drawback hindering their application in precision experiments such as gravitational wave detectors (GWDs). Mirrors for GWDs are Bragg's reflectors consisting of a bilayer-based stack of high- and low-refractive-index materials showing high reflectivity and low CTN. In this paper, we report the characterization of morphological, structural, optical, and mechanical properties of high-index materials such as scandium sesquioxide and hafnium dioxide and a low-index material such as magnesium fluoride deposited by plasma ion-assisted electron beam evaporation. We also evaluate their properties under different annealing treatments and discuss their potential for GWDs.

CONTEXT: Toppling televisions (TVs) are a source of childhood injury but meta-analysis has not assessed the likelihood of TV injuries in children. OBJECTIVE: To present pooled results for injuries, following a systematic review. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar and EMBASE databases were searched to 5 December 2022. STUDY SELECTION: Included studies met the following criteria: (1) assessed toppling TV injuries in paediatric populations; (2) reported point estimates as an OR or enabled its calculation and (3) used a comparison group. DATA EXTRACTION: A standardised form was used to include information on publication year, study design, population type, country, sample size, mean age, risk factors, point estimates or data used to calculate ORs. RESULTS: A total of 12 803 TV injuries were identified (five studies). Head and neck injuries (OR: 2.13, 95% CI: 1.21 to 3.75) and hospital admission (OR: 2.28, 95% CI: 1.80 to 2.90) were more likely in children aged under 6 years than over 6 years. Conversely, torso injuries were less likely in younger children (OR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.51 to 0.70). Children under 6 were two and a half times more likely to die or be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) as a result of toppling TVs, although this was not statistically significant. Males did not sustain more TV injuries than females. CONCLUSIONS: Children aged under 6 years are more likely to die, sustain head injuries and require hospital treatment from toppling TVs. Strategies for injury prevention must go beyond warning labels to include community education, promotion and use of tip restraint devices, mandatory safety standards and a commitment from manufacturers to improve TV sets stability.

Rationale: The co-occurrence of obstructive sleep apnea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, termed overlap syndrome, has a poor prognosis. However, data on positive airway pressure (PAP) treatments and their impact on outcomes and costs are lacking. Objectives: This retrospective observational study investigated the effects of PAP on health outcomes, resource usage, and costs in patients with overlap syndrome. Methods: Deidentified adjudicated claims data for patients with overlap syndrome in the United States were linked to objectively measured PAP user data. Patients were considered adherent to PAP therapy if they met Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services criteria for eight 90-day timeframes from device setup through 2-year follow-up. Propensity score matching was used to create comparable groups of adherent and nonadherent patients. Healthcare resource usage was based on the number of doctor visits, all-cause emergency room visits, all-cause hospitalizations, and PAP equipment and supplies, and proxy costs were obtained. Measurements and Main Results: A total of 6,810 patients were included (mean age, 60.8 yr; 56% female); 2,328 were nonadherent. Compared with the year before therapy, there were significant reductions in the number of emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and severe acute exacerbations during 2 years of PAP therapy in patients who were versus were not adherent (all P < 0.001). This improvement in health status was paralleled by a significant reduction in the associated healthcare costs. Conclusions: PAP usage by patients with overlap syndrome was associated with reduced all-cause hospitalizations and emergency room visits, severe acute exacerbations, and healthcare costs.

There is growing interest in the molecular surveillance of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus and the monitorization of emerging mutations that could impair the efficacy of antiviral prophylaxis and treatments. A simple, scalable protocol for viral nucleic acid enrichment could improve the surveillance of RSV. We developed a protocol for RSV-A and B amplification based on the Illumina CovidSeq workflow using an RSV primer panel. A total of 135 viral genomes were sequenced from nasopharyngeal samples through the optimization steps of this panel, while an additional 15 samples were used to test the final version. Full coverage of the G gene and over 95% of the coverage of the F gene, the target of the available RSV antivirals or monoclonal antibodies, were obtained. The F:K68N mutation, associated with decreased nirsevimab activity, was detected in our facility. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis showed several sublineages in the 2022-2023 influenza season in Europe. Our protocol allows for a simple and scalable simultaneous amplification of the RSV-A and B whole genome, increasing the yield of RSV sequencing and reducing costs. Its application would allow the world to be ready for the detection of arising mutations in relation to the widespread use of nirsevimab for RSV prevention.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 variant tracking is key to the genomic surveillance of the COVID-19 pandemic. While next-generation sequencing (NGS) is commonly used for variant determination, it is expensive and time-consuming. Variant-specific PCR (vsPCR) is a faster, cheaper method that detects specific mutations that are considered variant-defining. These tests usually rely on specific amplification when a mutation is present or a specific melting temperature peak after amplification. CASE PRESENTATION: A discrepant result between vsPCR and NGS was found in seventeen SARS-CoV-2 samples from Galicia, Spain. A cluster of BA.1 Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant showed a BA.2-like melting temperature pattern due to a point mutation (C21772T) downstream the deletion of the spike amino acids 69/70. As the 69/70 deletion is widely used for differentiation between BA.1 and BA.2 by vsPCR, C21772T can cause BA.1 samples to be misinterpreted as BA.2. Over a thousand BA.1 sequences in the EpiCoV database contain this mutation. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first case of a point mutation causing a vsPCR algorithm to misclassify BA.1 samples as BA.2. This is an example of how mutations in the probe target area of vsPCR tests based on melting curve analysis can lead to variant misclassification. NGS confirmation of vsPCR results is relevant for the accuracy of the epidemiological surveillance. In order to overcome the possible impact of novel mutations, diagnostic tools must be constantly updated.

CONTEXT: No evidence-based review has compared injury risks sustained on trampolines at home and in trampoline centres. OBJECTIVE: To present pooled results for injury type, site and treatment from studies reporting injuries that occurred on trampolines at home and in trampoline centres. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar and Embase databases were searched to 31 December 2021. STUDY SELECTION: Inclusion criteria: (1) assessment of trampoline injuries (home and trampoline centres); (2) children and adolescents; (3) the point estimate was reported as an odds ratio (OR); and (4) an internal comparison was used. DATA EXTRACTION: Data were reported according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A random-effects model was used to estimate effect. RESULTS: There were 1 386 843 injuries (n=11 studies). There was an increased likelihood of musculoskeletal and/or orthopaedic injuries (OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.66 to 3.61, p<0.001), lower extremity injury (OR 2.81, 95% CI 1.99 to 3.97, p<0.001), sprains (OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.36 to 1.97, p<0.001) and a need for surgery (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.37 to 2.60, p<0.001) at trampoline centres compared with home trampolines. Conversely, upper extremity injury (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.95, p=0.03), concussion (OR 0.48, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.65, p<0.001) and lacerations (OR 0.46, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.59, p<0.001) were less likely to occur at trampoline centres than at home. CONCLUSIONS: Children using trampoline centres are more likely to suffer severe trauma and require surgical intervention than children using home trampolines. Development and implementation of preventative strategies, public awareness, and mandatory safety standards are urgently required for trampoline centres.

AIM: To describe clinical characteristics, outcomes and causes of microcephaly in children whose condition was identified within the first year of life. METHODS: Retrospective review of medical records of microcephalic children born between 2008 and 2018 and admitted for any reason during the same period to a tertiary paediatric hospital. Microcephaly was defined as occipitofrontal circumference (OFC) more than two standard deviations below the mean (>-2 SD). RESULTS: Between January 2008 and September 2018, 1083 medical records were retrieved. Of the children, 886 were ineligible and 197 were confirmed cases of microcephaly. Of cases, 73 (37%) had primary microcephaly (at birth) and 72 (37%) had severe microcephaly (OFC > -3 SD). Of microcephalic children, 192 (98%) had congenital anomalies, of whom 93% had major anomalies, mostly cardiovascular or musculoskeletal. Neurological signs or symptoms were reported in 148 (75%), seizures being the most common. Of the 139 children with abnormal central nervous system (CNS) imaging, one or more structural brain abnormalities were identified in 124 (89%). Failure to reach developmental milestones was observed in 69%, visual impairment in 41% and cerebral palsy in 13%. Microcephaly was idiopathic in 51% and 24% had diagnosed genetic disorders. There was no association between developmental outcomes or structural brain anomalies and severity of microcephaly or timing of diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest the need for a systematic investigative approach to diagnosis, including a careful history, examination, genetic testing and neuroimaging, to determine the underlying cause of microcephaly, identify co-morbidities, predict prognosis and guide genetic counselling and therapy.

Pancreatic cancer is a pathology with a high mortality rate since it is detected at advanced stages, so the search for early-stage diagnostic biomarkers is essential. Liquid biopsies are currently being explored for this purpose and educated platelets are a good candidate, since they are known to present a bidirectional interaction with tumor cells. In this work, we analyzed the effects of platelets on cancer cells' viability, as determined by MTT, migration using transwell assays, clonogenicity in soft agar and stemness by dilution assays and stem markers' expression. We found that the co-culture of platelets and pancreatic cancer cells increased the proliferation and migration capacity of BXCP3 cells, augmented clonogenicity and induced higher levels of Nanog, Sox2 and Oct4 expression. As platelets can provide horizontal transfer of microRNAs, we also determined the differential expression of miRNAs in platelets obtained from a small cohort of pancreatic cancer patients and healthy subjects. We found clear differences in the expression of several miRNAs between platelets of patients with cancer healthy subjects. Moreover, when we analyzed microRNAs from the platelets of the pancreatic juice and blood derived from each of the cancer patients, interestingly we find differences between the blood- and pancreatic juice-derived platelets suggesting the presence of different subpopulations of platelets in cancer patients, which warrant further analysis.

In pretreatment tumor samples of EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, EGFR-Thr790Met mutation has been detected in a variable prevalence by different ultrasensitive assays with controversial prognostic value. Furthermore, its detection in liquid biopsy (LB) samples remains challenging, being hampered by the shortage of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). Here, we describe the technical validation and clinical implications of a real-time PCR with peptide nucleic acid (PNA-Clamp) and digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) for EGFR-Thr790Met detection in diagnosis FFPE samples and in LB. Limit of blank (LOB) and limit of detection (LOD) were established by analyzing negative and low variant allele frequency (VAF) FFPE and LB specimens. In a cohort of 78 FFPE samples, both techniques showed an overall agreement (OA) of 94.20%. EGFR-Thr790Met was detected in 26.47% of cases and was associated with better progression-free survival (PFS) (16.83 ± 7.76 vs. 11.47 ± 1.83 months; p = 0.047). In LB, ddPCR was implemented in routine diagnostics under UNE-EN ISO 15189:2013 accreditation, increasing the detection rate of 32.43% by conventional methods up to 45.95%. During follow-up, ddPCR detected EGFR-Thr790Met up to 7 months before radiological progression. Extensively validated ultrasensitive assays might decipher the utility of pretreatment EGFR-Thr790Met and improve its detection rate in LB studies, even anticipating radiological progression.

Chloride (Cl-), traditionally considered harmful for agriculture, has recently been defined as a beneficial macronutrient with specific roles that result in more efficient use of water (WUE), nitrogen (NUE), and CO2 in well-watered plants. When supplied in a beneficial range of 1-5 mM, Cl- increases leaf cell size, improves leaf osmoregulation, and reduces water consumption without impairing photosynthetic efficiency, resulting in overall higher WUE. Thus, adequate management of Cl- nutrition arises as a potential strategy to increase the ability of plants to withstand water deficit. To study the relationship between Cl- nutrition and drought resistance, tobacco plants treated with 0.5-5 mM Cl- salts were subjected to sustained water deficit (WD; 60% field capacity) and water deprivation/rehydration treatments, in comparison with plants treated with equivalent concentrations of nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate salts. The results showed that Cl- application reduced stress symptoms and improved plant growth during water deficit. Drought resistance promoted by Cl- nutrition resulted from the simultaneous occurrence of water deficit avoidance and tolerance mechanisms, which improved leaf turgor, water balance, photosynthesis performance, and WUE. Thus, it is proposed that beneficial Cl- levels increase the ability of crops to withstand drought, promoting a more sustainable and resilient agriculture.

Mechanical manipulation of nanowires (NWs) for their integration in electronics is still problematic because of their reduced dimensions, risking to produce mechanical damage to the NW structure and electronic properties during the assembly process. In this regard, contactless NW manipulation based methods using non-uniform electric fields, like dielectrophoresis (DEP) are usually much softer than mechanical methods, offering a less destructive alternative for integrating nanostructures in electronic devices. Here, we report a feasible and reproducible dielectrophoretic method to assemble single GaAs NWs (with radius 35-50 nm, and lengths 3-5 µm) on conductive electrodes layout with assembly yields above 90% per site, and alignment yields of 95%. The electrical characteristics of the dielectrophoretic contact formed between a GaAs NW and conductive electrodes have been measured, observing Schottky barrier like contacts. Our results also show the fast fabrication of diodes with rectifying characteristics due to the formation of a low-resistance contact between the Ga catalytic droplet at the tip of the NW when using Al doped ZnO as electrode. The current-voltage characteristics of a single Ga-terminated GaAs NW measured in dark and under illumination exhibit a strong sensitivity to visible light under forward bias conditions (around two orders of magnitude), mainly produced by a change on the series resistance of the device.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pancreatitis (CP), pancreatic cancer (PCa), and autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) often present as a pancreatic mass. Accurate diagnosis is not always possible; up to 8% of surgical procedures are performed in benign pancreatic masses presumed to be malignant. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare clinical and imaging characteristics of resected focal type 2 AIP, CP, and PCa and identify factors that could improve preoperative differential diagnosis. METHODS: Charts from patients that underwent pancreatic resection under suspicion of PCa between 2000 and 2014 were reviewed. Clinical and imaging data were recorded. Subjects were grouped as type 2 AIP, CP, and PCa. RESULTS: We included 79 cases; 41 men, mean age of 57.3 years/old ± 15.6 SD. Pathology report was type 2 AIP (20%), CP (10%), and PCa (70%). According to international consensus criteria for AIP 11 cases were deemed probable type 2 and 5 as unspecific pancreatic mass. A nondilated main pancreatic duct (MPD) was associated with AIP (OR 9.3; 95% CI 3.05-28.7), p < 0.001; obstructive jaundice (OR 28.5; 95% CI 8.18-79.5); and a dilated MPD (OR 5.21; 95% CI 1.9-14.6) suggested malignancy. CONCLUSIONS: In the setting of undetermined pancreatic focal mass, a nondilated MPD suggests the diagnosis of type 2 AIP.

Glass has been recently envisioned as a stronger and more robust alternative to silicon in microelectromechanical system applications, including high-frequency resonators and switches. Identifying the dynamic mechanical properties of microscale glass is thus vital for understanding their ability to withstand shocks and vibrations in such demanding applications. However, despite nearly half a century of research, the micromechanical properties of glass and amorphous materials in general are primarily limited to quasi-static strain rates below ∼0.1/s. Here, we report the in situ high-strain-rate experiments of fused silica micropillars inside a scanning electron microscope at strain rates up to 1335/s. A remarkable ductile-brittle-ductile failure mode transition was observed at increasing strain rates from 0.0008 to 1335/s as the deformation flow transitions between homogeneous-serrated-homogeneous regimes. Detailed surface topography investigation of the tested micropillars revealed that at the intermediate strain rate (<∼6/s) serrated flow regime, the load drops are caused by the sequential propagation of individual shear bands. Further, analytical calculations and finite element simulations suggest that the atomistic mechanism responsible for the homogeneous stress-strain curves at very high strain rates (>∼64/s) can be attributed to the simultaneous nucleation of multiple shear bands along with dissipative deformation heating. This unique rate-dependent deformation behavior of the glass micropillars highlights the importance and need of extending such microscale high-strain-rate studies to other amorphous materials such as metallic glasses and amorphous metals and alloys. Such investigations can provide critical insights about the damage tolerance and crashworthiness of these materials for real-life applications.
