RESUMO

A high-flux sub-micrometre focusing system was constructed using multilayer focusing mirrors in Kirkpatrick-Baez geometry for 100 keV X-rays. The focusing mirror system had a wide bandwidth of 5% and a high peak reflectivity of 74%. Performance was evaluated at the undulator beamline BL05XU of SPring-8, which produced an intense 100 keV X-ray beam with a bandwidth of 1%. When the light source was focused directly in both vertical and horizontal directions, the beam size was measured to be 0.32 µm (V) × 5.3 µm (H) with a flux of 1 × 1012 photons s-1. However, when a limited horizontal slit was used to form a secondary source, the focusing beam size decreased to 0.25 µm (V) × 0.26 µm (H) with a flux of 6 × 1010 photons s-1. The 200 nm line and space patterns of a Siemens star chart made of tantalum were clearly resolved by the absorption contrast of the focused beam. This 100 keV focusing system is applicable to various fields of nondestructive analyses with sub-micrometre resolutions.

The BL09XU beamline of SPring-8 has been reorganized into a beamline dedicated for hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) to provide advanced capabilities with upgraded optical instruments. The beamline has two HAXPES analyzers to cover a wide range of applications. Two sets of double channel-cut crystal monochromators with the Si(220) and (311) reflections were installed to perform resonant HAXPES analyses with a total energy resolution of less than 300 meV over a wide energy range (4.9-12 keV) while achieving a fixed-exit condition. A double-crystal X-ray phase retarder using diamond crystals controls the polarization state with a high degree of polarization over 0.9 in the wide energy range 5.9-9.5 keV. Each HAXPES analyzer is equipped with a focusing mirror to provide a high-flux microbeam. The design and performance of the upgraded instruments are presented.

X-ray focusing mirrors often employ the Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) geometry, which sequentially crosses two elliptic-cylindrical mirrors in grazing-incidence configurations. However, KB mirrors do not satisfy the Abbe sine condition and thus potentially expand the focus size with severe coma aberration. Satisfying the Abbe sine condition complicates mirror shapes or increases the number of ultraprecision mirrors required. The present study shows that the focal length and mirror length of KB mirrors have to be shortened to simultaneously achieve a large numerical aperture and reduced aberration. Such ultracompact KB (ucKB) mirrors are examined using a simulation that combines ray tracing and wave propagation. The focus intensity distributions show that ucKB mirrors suppress the aberration produced by their rotation errors and that they robustly achieve diffraction-limited focusing. The simulation results are confirmed in a synchrotron radiation experiment. ucKB mirrors can be advantageous for soft-X-ray nanoprobes, which require focusing devices to achieve a large numerical aperture.

In this study, double-multilayer monochromators that generate intense, high-energy, pink X-ray beams are designed, installed and evaluated at the SPring-8 medium-length (215 m) bending-magnet beamline BL20B2 for imaging applications. Two pairs of W/B4C multilayer mirrors are designed to utilize photon energies of 110 keV and 40 keV with bandwidths of 0.8% and 4.8%, respectively, which are more than 100 times larger when compared with the Si double-crystal monochromator (DCM) with a bandwidth of less than 0.01%. At an experimental hutch located 210 m away from the source, a large and uniform beam of size 14 mm (V) × 300 mm (H) [21 mm (V) × 300 mm (H)] was generated with a high flux density of 1.6 × 109 photons s-1 mm-2 (6.9 × 1010 photons s-1 mm-2) at 110 keV (40 keV), which marked a 300 (190) times increase in the photon flux when compared with a DCM with Si 511 (111) diffraction. The intense pink beams facilitate advanced X-ray imaging for large-sized objects such as fossils, rocks, organs and electronic devices with high speed and high spatial resolution.

RESUMO

A soft X-ray ptychography system using a Wolter mirror for the illumination optics has been developed. By taking advantage of the achromaticity of the optics, the system is capable of seamlessly imaging at half-period resolution of 50 nm with a broad photon-energy range from 250 eV to 2 keV while maintaining the focal position. Imaging a mammalian cell at various wavelengths was demonstrated, and high-resolution visualization of organelle was achieved. Stereo imaging was also performed with a long working distance of 20 mm. In combination with in-situ/operando and tomographic measurements, this system will be a powerful tool for observing biological and material targets with complex features.

An endstation dedicated to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) using a soft X-ray microbeam has been developed at the beamline BL25SU of SPring-8. To obtain a high photoemission intensity, this endstation is optimized for measurements under the condition of grazing beam incidence to a sample surface, where the glancing angle is 5° or smaller. A Wolter mirror is used for focusing the soft X-rays. Even at the glancing angle of 5°, the smallest beam spot still having a sufficient photon flux for ARPES is almost round on the sample surface and the FWHM diameter is ∼5 µm. There is no need to change the sample orientation for performing kx - ky mapping by virtue of the electron lens with a deflector of the photoelectron analyzer, which makes it possible to keep the irradiation area unchanged. A partially cleaved surface area as small as ∼20 µm was made on an Si(111) wafer and ARPES measurements were performed. The results are presented.

Since the invention of the first lasers in the visible-light region, research has aimed to produce short-wavelength lasers that generate coherent X-rays; the shorter the wavelength, the better the imaging resolution of the laser and the shorter the pulse duration, leading to better temporal resolution in probe measurements. Recently, free-electron lasers based on self-amplified spontaneous emission have made it possible to generate a hard-X-ray laser (that is, the photon energy is of the order of ten kiloelectronvolts) in an ångström-wavelength regime, enabling advances in fields from ultrafast X-ray spectrosopy to X-ray quantum optics. An atomic laser based on neon atoms and pumped by a soft-X-ray (that is, a photon energy of less than one kiloelectronvolt) free-electron laser has been achieved at a wavelength of 14 nanometres. Here, we use a copper target and report a hard-X-ray inner-shell atomic laser operating at a wavelength of 1.5 ångströms. X-ray free-electron laser pulses with an intensity of about 10(19) watts per square centimetre tuned to the copper K-absorption edge produced sufficient population inversion to generate strong amplified spontaneous emission on the copper Kα lines. Furthermore, we operated the X-ray free-electron laser source in a two-colour mode, with one colour tuned for pumping and the other for the seed (starting) light for the laser.

Almost comparable transplantation outcomes have been reported with HLA-matched unrelated donor transplantation (UDT) and cord blood transplantation (CBT). We conducted a prospective phase 2 study to assess the efficacy and safety of single-unit myeloablative CBT in adult leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. Because the day 180 survival of UDT was approximately 80%, we determined the alternative hypothesis of expected day 180 survival with a successful engraftment rate of 80% and set the null hypothesis of threshold rate at 65%. Sixty-two patients (median age, 37 years) were registered, including 28 with acute myelogenous leukemia, 25 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and 9 with myelodysplastic syndrome. Of 61 eligible patients, 52 were successfully engrafted and survived at day 180 (85%; 95% confidence interval, 74% to 93%). Single-unit CBT was judged to be effective because the null hypothesis was rejected (P < .001). Furthermore, neutrophil engraftment was observed in 57 patients (92%); the incidences of grade II-IV acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease were 30% and 32%, respectively; and the cumulative incidences of nonrelapse mortality and relapse at 2 years were 18% and 13%, respectively. The present study showed favorable survival outcomes with single-unit CBT. Therefore, this method may be considered if a well-HLA-matched UDT cannot be obtained.

A focusing optics that can provide a sub-micrometre high-flux probe for soft X-ray micrometre-scale angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is proposed. A monolithic Wolter-type mirror with a large acceptance, achromatism and small comatic aberration was designed and evaluated. A focused beam size of 0.4 µm (vertical) × 4 µm (horizontal), a high throughput of 59% and a high tolerance of 1.6 mrad to the pitching error were realized at a photon energy of 1000 eV. A Wolter-type mirror can be practically employed as a stable sub-micrometre focusing mirror with high throughput in ARPES applications.

Ultimate focusing of an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) enables the generation of ultrahigh-intensity X-ray pulses. Although sub-10 nm focusing has already been achieved using synchrotron light sources, the sub-10 nm focusing of XFEL beams remains difficult mainly because the insufficient stability of the light source hinders the evaluation of a focused beam profile. This problem is specifically disadvantageous for the Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) mirror focusing system, in which a slight misalignment of ∼300 nrad can degrade the focused beam. In this work, an X-ray nanobeam of a free-electron laser was generated using reflective KB focusing optics combined with speckle interferometry. The speckle profiles generated by 2 nm platinum particles were systematically investigated on a single-shot basis by changing the alignment of the multilayer KB mirror system installed at the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact Free-Electron Laser, in combination with computer simulations. It was verified that the KB mirror alignments were optimized with the required accuracy, and a focused vertical beam of 5.8 nm (±1.2 nm) was achieved after optimization. The speckle interferometry reported in this study is expected to be an effective tool for optimizing the alignment of nano-focusing systems and for generating an unprecedented intensity of up to 1022 W cm-2 using XFEL sources.

To supply the growing demand for high photon flux in synchrotron science including surface diffraction, a middle energy-bandwidth monochromator covering the 10-4 to 10-3 range has been adapted by applying an asymmetric diffraction geometry to a cryogenically cooled silicon 111 double-crystal monochromator used as a standard for the undulator source at SPring-8. The asymmetric geometry provides a great advantage with its ability to configure flux gains over a wide energy range by simply changing the asymmetry angle, while the angular divergence of the exit beam remains unchanged. A monolithic design with three faces has been employed, having one symmetrically cut and another two asymmetrically cut surfaces relative to the same atomic plane, maintaining cooling efficiency and the capability of quickly changing the reflection surface. With the asymmetric geometry, an X-ray flux greater than 1014 photons s-1 was available around 12 keV. A maximum gain of 2.5 was obtained relative to the standard symmetric condition.

Probing the spatial coherence of X-rays has become increasingly important when designing advanced optical systems for beamlines at synchrotron radiation sources and free-electron lasers. Double-slit experiments at various slit widths are a typical method of quantitatively measuring the spatial coherence over a wide wavelength range including the X-ray region. However, this method cannot be used for the analysis of spatial coherence when the two evaluation points are separated by a large distance of the order of millimetres owing to the extremely narrow spacing between the interference fringes. A Fresnel-mirror-based optical system can produce interference patterns by crossing two beams from two small mirrors separated in the transverse direction to the X-ray beam. The fringe spacing can be controlled via the incidence angles on the mirrors. In this study, a Fresnel-mirror-based optical system was constructed at the soft X-ray beamline (BL25SU) of SPring-8. The relationship between the coherence and size of the virtual source was quantitatively measured at 300 eV in both the vertical and horizontal directions using the beam. The results obtained indicate that this is a valuable method for the optimization of optical systems along beamlines.

An arrival timing monitor for the soft X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) beamline of SACLA BL1 has been developed. A small portion of the soft XFEL pulse is branched using the wavefront-splitting method. The branched FEL pulse is one-dimensionally focused onto a GaAs wafer to induce a transient reflectivity change. The beam branching method enables the simultaneous operation of the arrival timing diagnostics and experiments. The temporal resolution evaluated from the imaging system is ∼22 fs in full width at half-maximum, which is sufficient considering the temporal durations of the soft XFEL and the optical laser pulses.

RESUMO

Intense sub-micrometre focusing of a soft X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) was achieved by using an ellipsoidal mirror with a high numerical aperture. A hybrid focusing system in combination with a Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror was applied for compensation of a small spatial acceptance of the ellipsoidal mirror. With this system, the soft X-ray FEL pulses were focused down to 480 nm × 680 nm with an extremely high intensity of 8.8×1016 W cm-2 at a photon energy of 120 eV, which yielded saturable absorption at the L-edge of Si (99.8 eV) with a drastic increase of transmittance from 8% to 48%.

We developed a full-field microscope with twin Wolter mirrors for soft X-ray free-electron lasers. The Wolter mirrors for a condenser and an objective were fabricated using an electroforming process with a precisely figured master mandrel. In the imaging system constructed at SACLA BL1, sub-micrometer spatial resolution was achieved at wavelengths of 10.3 and 3.4 nm. Single-shot bright-field images were acquired with a maximum illumination intensity of 7×1014 W/cm2.

RESUMO

An X-ray prism for the extraction of a specific harmonic of undulator radiation is proposed. By using the prism in a grazing incidence geometry, the beam axes of fundamental and harmonics of undulator radiation are separated with large angles over 10 µrad, which enables the selection of a specific harmonic with the help of apertures, while keeping a high photon flux. The concept of the harmonic separation was experimentally confirmed using X-ray beams from the X-ray free-electron laser SACLA.

RESUMO

For the purpose of imaging element- and shell-specific magnetic distributions under high magnetic fields, a scanning soft X-ray microscope has been developed at beamline BL25SU, SPring-8, Japan. The scanning X-ray microscope utilizes total electron yield detection of absorbed circularly polarized soft X-rays in order to observe magnetic domains through the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism effect. Crucially, this system is equipped with an 8 T superconducting magnet. The performance and features of the present system are demonstrated by magnetic domain observations of the fractured surface of a Nd14.0Fe79.7Cu0.1B6.2 sintered magnet.

The design and performance of a soft X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) beamline of the SPring-8 Compact free-electron LAser (SACLA) are described. The SPring-8 Compact SASE Source test accelerator, a prototype machine of SACLA, was relocated to the SACLA undulator hall for dedicated use for the soft X-ray FEL beamline. Since the accelerator is operated independently of the SACLA main linac that drives the two hard X-ray beamlines, it is possible to produce both soft and hard X-ray FEL simultaneously. The FEL pulse energy reached 110 µJ at a wavelength of 12.4 nm (i.e. photon energy of 100 eV) with an electron beam energy of 780 MeV.

Hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome (hMDS) is a distinct entity with bone marrow (BM) hypocellularity and the risk of death from BM failure (BMF). To elucidate the characteristics of hMDS, the data of 129 patients diagnosed between April 2003 and March 2012 were collected from 20 institutions and the central review team of the National Research Group on Idiopathic Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes, and compared with 115 non-hMDS patients. More RA and fewer CMMoL and RAEB-t in French-American-British (FAB) and more RCUD and MDS-U and fewer RCMD in World Health Organization (WHO) classifications were found in hMDS than non-hMDS with significant differences. The overall survival (OS) and AML progression-free survival (AML-PFS) of hMDS were higher than those of non-hMDS, especially in patients at age ≥50 and of lower risk in Revised International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS-R). In competing risks analysis, hMDS exhibited decreased risk of AML-progression in lower IPSS or IPSS-R risk patients, and higher risk of death from BMF in patients at age ≥50. Poor performance status (PS ≥2) and high karyotype risks in IPSS-R (high and very high) were significant risk factors of death and AML-progression in Cox proportional hazards analysis.

RESUMO

A 74-year-old male with a mass in the right breast visited the Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery in November 20XX. Core needle biopsy was performed. Pathological diagnosis was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The Ann Arbor clinical stage was IIA, and international prognostic index was low-intermediate. Six courses of rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone and four courses of intrathecal chemotherapy were administered, and the patient achieved complete remission.
