Despite overwhelming evidence supporting the unidimensional structure of the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) across various language adaptations, a multifactor structure has frequently been identified for the Chinese version (GSES-C), leading some researchers to conclude that the GSES-C is multidimensional. However, the multifactor structure might derive from common method bias, such as wording effects. To test this postulation, a sample of 1,515 college students completed the GSES-C, then 507 of the sample additionally completed 3 other criteria scales. The research approach included logistic-semantic analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis of single-factor and bifactor models. The study yielded 3 main findings: (a) There were 2 common wording factors underlying the GSES-C: "uncertain situation wording" and "hypothetical wording." (b) Although the 1-factor model of the GSES-C did not fit the data, unidimensionality was supported when the 2 wording factors were controlled for in a bifactor model, indicating that the wording effects emerged. (c) The correlation coefficients between the general factor and external positive constructs were substantially underestimated if the wording effects were not controlled. The reasons for and the meanings of the wording effects underlying the GSES-C are also discussed.

Diabetes self-management is suboptimal in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D), including those in China. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of parent-child relationship quality on diabetes self-management. Data were collected by a self-report survey among 122 Chinese adolescents from April to July 2017. The data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance, descriptive analyses, correlation analyses, and mediation analyses. The mean age was 13.8 (range, 10-18) years, and the mean diabetes duration was 4.1 (±3.1) years. About half of the adolescents with T1D experienced high levels of perceived stress. Parent-child relationship quality mediated the associations between perceived stress and collaboration with parents, diabetes care activities, and diabetes communication on aspects of diabetes self-management (ps < 0.05). To reduce the negative impacts of perceived stress on diabetes self-management in this population, parent-child relationship quality should be considered an important element of family-based interventions and clinical practice.

AIMS: The aims of this study were to: (a) determine if self-efficacy mediates the relationship between perceived stress and diabetes self-management in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D); and (b) explore whether perceived stress moderated the self-efficacy and diabetes self-management relationship. DESIGN: Non-experimental, descriptive correlational design, conducted from January-December 2016. METHODS: Guided by the Adaptation to Diabetes framework, data on demographic and clinical characteristics, perceived stress, self-efficacy and diabetes self-management were collected. Descriptive analyses and regression analyses were generated by SPSS Version 22. Structural equation modelling was implemented with the MPlus program. RESULTS: There was no direct effect of perceived stress on diabetes self-management; however, self-efficacy mediated the relationship between perceived stress and diabetes self-management. Adolescents who had high self-efficacy and low perceived stress demonstrated better diabetes care activities and diabetes communication than would be predicted from the main effects of self-efficacy and perceived stress alone. CONCLUSIONS: Decreasing perceived stress and improving self-efficacy are important strategies to improve diabetes self-management in adolescents with T1D. IMPACT: Adolescents with T1D experience considerable stress with daily self-management demands. This study highlights the mediating role of self-efficacy on perceived stress and diabetes self-management. Assessment of perceived stress and self-efficacy in self-management tasks in adolescents with T1D may help nurses individualize self-management education and support. Incorporating strategies to promote stress management and self-efficacy in diabetes education may also improve diabetes self-management.

This study was conducted with the primary purpose to gain a comprehensive understanding of Chinese students' acculturation by examining the effects of their acculturation strategies, sociocultural, psychological adaptation on the academic adaptation. The total number of 315 international Chinese students studying in the United States participated in an online survey. The mid-point split method was used to classify the four acculturation strategies among Chinese students. The results of a Chi-square test, ANOVA analyses and hierarchical regressions reveal that separation was the most preferred acculturation strategy by the Chinese students while marginalization was the least desirable. Chinese students did the best in sociocultural adaptation but the worst in academic adaptation. However, students who achieved a good sociocultural adaptation encountered unexpected problems with their psychological adaptation. Findings also indicate that international Chinese students' preference for separation and marginalization was associated with a better psychological and academic adaptation while integration and assimilation strategy was associated with a better sociocultural adaptation. Their academic adaptation can be predicted significantly by their psychological adaptation, not by their sociocultural adaptation.

In 2008, an 8.0 Richter scale earthquake devastated Wenchuan in China, which resulted in heavy casualties, and had wide-reaching psychological effects on survivors. To examine its impact on the survivors, this study aims to investigate the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in adolescents eight years after the earthquake. The cross-section survey was conducted in two different earthquake-affected areas, and data were collected from 4118 respondents. Instruments included the questionnaire on demographic information, the questionnaire on seismic exposure, PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C) questionnaire, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) and Simple Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ). During the survey, there were 1998 valid questionnaires from the generally affected area and 2120 questionnaires from the severely affected area. The rate of PTSD is 1.9% in the generally affected area and 2.7% in the severely affected disaster area; there is no significant difference between the two differently affected areas. Occurrences of PTSD and PTG are significantly positively correlated in the generally affected area, nevertheless, there is a significant negative correlation between PTSD and PTG in most systems of the severely affected area. The results of this study help to expand our knowledge regarding posttraumatic stress in adolescents 8 years after the Wenchuan earthquake, and it provides suggestions for specific long-term health interventions in such populations. To prevent earthquake-related psychological issues among adolescent survivors, social support, psychological aid, and improvement of the living environment are necessary to buffer negative posttraumatic stress.
