RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: This study was aimed at exploring the immediate impacts of pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFMEs) on various maternal physiological parameters in pregnant women. METHODS: The study included a total of 52 women, 26 pregnant (Pregnant group: 28.04±6.01 years; 26.83±3.81 kg/m2) and 26 nonpregnant (Control group: 29.42±5.73 years; 25.41±3.03 kg/m2) individuals. All women received PFME as follows: PFME was performed for 5 min (6-s holding contraction, 10 s of relaxation, 3 rapid PFM contractions). Evaluations were conducted before, immediately after, and 5 min post-exercise, with measurements including inferior vena cava (IVC) diameters and pulsatility index, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and heart rates. Two-way analysis of variance was performed for group and time comparisons in repeated measurements. RESULTS: In both groups, the IVC collapsibility index values were lower 5 min after exercise, although this decrease, although clinically significant, did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.057). Post-exercise systolic blood pressure significantly decreased in both groups, whereas diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly in the pregnant group (p = 0.001, p = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS: The study found no statistically significant changes in the collapsibility index of the IVC after PFME but observed a clinically suggestive decrease. The clinical decrease in the collapsibility index can be interpreted as PFME in the supine position increasing venous return. Additionally, PFME was found not to alter maternal and fetal heart rates but contributed to the decrease in maternal systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Our study supports the view that the acute effects of PFME neither induce fetal stress nor pose maternal risks.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate placental and fetal lung stiffness in pregnant women with and without gestational diabetes, considering the well-established delay in fetal lung maturation associated with gestational diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary center and included pregnant women who underwent a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test between 24-28 weeks of gestation. Elastography measurements were performed using point shear wave elastography (pSWE). RESULTS: The study included 60 pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes and 60 pregnant women in the control group. SWE velocity of peripheral placenta, central placenta, and lung were higher in the gestational diabetes group compared to the control group. Furthermore, SWE velocity of peripheral placenta, central placenta, and lung were higher in newborns with neonatal respiratory morbidity. Based on the ROC analysis of gestational diabetes patients the AUC for lung SWE velocity was 0.88 (cut-off 12.4 kPa, 95% CI: 0.77-0.99, p<0.001) with a sensitivity of 71.4% and specificity of 95.6% in predicting neonatal respiratory morbidity. CONCLUSION: Fetal placental and lung stiffness increase in fetuses of pregnant women with diabetes. Moreover, higher fetal lung stiffness during the fetal period is associated with increased neonatal respiratory morbidity.

Objective: To compare the age-specific clinical features of molar pregnancy and to describe the risk factors associated with this situation. Method: This retrospective case-control study was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Tepecik Education and Research Hospital, Izmir, Turkey. The participants included both adolescents (≤ 19 years) and adults with histologically confirmed hydatidiform moles in our institution between January 2015 and January 2022. The interventions and main outcome measures of this study involved evaluating the clinical and ultrasonographic features, as well as the risk factors, associated with molar pregnancies in adolescents. Results: This study of 137 patients with molar pregnancy found that adults had a higher incidence of partial molar pregnancy (20 patients versus seven patients) and lower beta-hCG levels than adolescents (176.890.71 mIU/ml versus 253.734.47 mIU/ml). Adolescents had a higher likelihood of hyperthyroidism (25.4% versus 9.2%). bleeding on admission (4.2% versus 1.51%),. longer hospital stays (5.44 ± 2.73 days versus 3.59 ± 3.08 days). Higher rates of uterine enlargement and postoperative bleeding (15.5% versus 1.5%). Adolescents also required more analgesia (97% versus 89.4%). Conclusions: Adolescents with Gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTD) may present with more severe symptoms compared to adults, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Further research is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms and risk factors for GTDs in this population. Increased awareness and education can help improve recognition and management of GTDs in adolescents and improve their overall health outcomes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The study's aim is to define among a group of ultrasonographic cervical measurements a candidate parameter predictive of successful of induction of labor in term pregnancies with unfavorable cervix. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 141 pregnant women at term with an unfavorable cervix (Bishop score ≤ 6). All patients underwent clinical and ultrasonographic cervical evaluation before dinoprostone induction. Pre-induction cervical assessments included the Bishop score, cervical length, cervical volume, uterocervical angle, and cervical elastographic parameters. Vaginal delivery (VD) was accepted as successful dinoprostone induction. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to identify the potential risk factors significantly associated with CS while controlling for possible confounding variables. RESULTS: The vaginal delivery rate was 74% (n = 93) and the cesarean section (CS) rate was 26% (n = 32). Sixteen patients who had a cesarean section due to fetal distress before the active phase of labor were excluded from the study. The mean induction-to-delivery interval was 1176.1 ± 352 (540-2150) for VD and 1359.4 ± 318.4 (780-2020) for CS (p = 0.01). Bishop score was lower in women with cesarean section (p = 0.002). When both groups were compared in terms of delivery type, no difference was found between cervical elastography values, cervical volume, cervical length, and uterocervical angle measurements. Multivariable logistic regression model failed to show significant differences between cervical elastography values, cervical volume, cervical length, and uterocervical angle measurements. CONCLUSION: Cervical length, cervical elastography, cervical volume, and uterocervical angle measurements did not provide a clinically useful prediction of outcomes following labor induction in our study group with unfavorable cervix. Cervical length measurements significantly predicted the time interval from induction to delivery.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This article aims to discuss the use of three-dimensional (3D) printed models of vascular variation cases as an educational tool for undergraduate and postgraduate anatomy students. METHODS: This advanced study involved ten anatomy assistants who were provided with five distinct cases of congenital cardiovascular variations, each accompanied by a computed tomography angiography (CT-A) and 1:1 solid model format. The residents were asked to generate perceptions for both formats and then compare these perceptions based on identifying the variation, defining the structural features, and evaluating relevant educational perspectives. RESULTS: The vascular origin measurement values compared to the statistically evaluated real values of the related cases showed that models were 1:1 identical copies. Qualitative assessment feedback from five stations supported the usefulness of 3D models as educational tools for organ anatomy, simulation of variational structures, and overall medical education and anatomy training. Models showcasing different anatomical variations such as aortic arch with Type 2 pattern, a right-sided aortic arch with Type 2 pattern, an aberrant right subclavian artery, arteria lusoria in thorax, and a left coronary artery originating from pulmonary trunk in an Alcapa type pattern allow for better analysis due to their complex anatomies, thus optimizing the study of variation-specific anatomy. The perception level in the 3D model contained higher points in all of the nine parameters, namely identification of cardiovascular variations, defining the vessel with anomaly, aortic arch branch count and appearance order, feasibility of using it in peers and student education. 3D models received a score 9.1 points, while CT-A images were rated at 4.8 out of 10. CONCLUSION: 3D printed anatomical models of variational cardiovascular anatomy serve as essential components of anatomy training and postgraduate clinical perception by granting demonstrative feedback and a superior comprehension of the visuospatial relationship between the anatomical structures.

RESUMO

To determine the fertilization and embryonic potential of immature metaphase I (MI) oocytes in patients with low oocyte maturity rate in whom the percentage of mature oocytes obtained was less than 75% of the total retrieved ones. In vivo matured metaphase II (MII) oocytes (MII-ICSI, n = 244), and in vitro matured MI oocytes (MI-MII-ICSI, n = 202) underwent an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedure. Maturation rate, fertilization rate and early embryonic development were compared in both groups. In total, 683 oocytes were collected from 117 ICSI cycles of 117 patients. Among them, 244 (35.7%) were mature MII and 259 (37.9%) were MI after the denudation process. Of those 259 MI oocytes, 202 (77.9%) progressed to MII oocytes after an incubation period of 18-24 h. The maturation rate was 77.9%. Fertilization rate was found to be significantly higher in the rescued in vitro matured MI oocyte group when compared with the in vivo matured MII oocyte group (41.6% vs 25.8%; P = 0.0006). However, no significant difference was observed in terms of cleavage rates on days 2 and 3 between the groups (P = 0.9126 and P = 0.5031, respectively). There may be unidentified in vivo factors on the oocyte maturation causing low developmental capacity in spite of high fertilization rates in the group of patients with low oocyte maturity rate. Furthermore, studies are needed to determine the appropriate culture characteristics as well as culture period and ICSI timing of these oocytes.

RESUMO

AIM: Typical antipsychotics (TAPs) are commonly used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, extrapyramidal disorders, hyperprolactinemia, and reproductive dysfunctions have been observed in women during the use of TAPs. For this reason, less toxic and prolactin-sparing atypical antipsychotic (AAP) drugs such as clozapine (CLN) have been developed. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of taxifolin on possible ovarian and reproductive toxicity associated with CLN and haloperidol (HPL) in female Wistar albino rats. METHODS: The rats were grouped as healthy control group (HCG), CLN, HPL, taxifolin + clozapine (TCL), and taxifolin + haloperidol (THL). Drugs were administered to the groups for 28 days. At the end of that time, ovarian tissues of six rats from each group were taken for histopathological and biochemical analyses. Remaining six rats in groups were examined for evaluation of reproductive dysfunctions. RESULTS: Severe degeneration and vacuolization were observed in the primary, secondary, and primordial follicles of the ovarian tissues of CLN- and HPL-treated groups, of which malondialdehyde (MDA) level was high and total glutathione (tGSH) level was low. In the taxifolin-treated groups, taxifolin significantly prevented the increase of MDA level and decrease of tGSH level, and the severity of histopathological damage was found to be lower. In addition, it was found that taxifolin significantly prevented infertility and delay in pregnancy associated with CLN and HPL. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this experiment suggest that taxifolin can be beneficial in treating oxidative ovarian damage, infertility, and reproductive dysfunctions induced by CLN and HPL.

RESUMO

We investigated the effect of ATP's protection against possible bevacizumab-induced ovarian damage and reproductive dysfunction in female albino Wistar rats. A total of 42 rats, 36 females, and 6 males were used in the experiment. Normal saline (0.9% NaCl) was injected as a solvent to the Bevacizumab (BVZ; n = 12) and Control (n = 6) groups. 25 mg/kg ATP was injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) to the ATP + bevacizumab (ABZ; n = 12) group. One hour after ATP and solvent administration, 10 mg/kg bevacizumab was i.p. injected to the ABZ and BVZ groups. Bevacizumab was administered once a day every two weeks; ATP was administered one a day for 30 days. At the end of this period, six rats from each group were sacrificed with high dose of anesthesia (thiopental sodium 50 mg/kg) and biochemical and histopathological examinations were performed in ovarian tissues. Mature male rats were kept in the laboratory for two months to breed the remaining female animals. The values showed that the oxidant parameters increased in the ovarian tissue of the BVZ group compared to the healthy controls and the ABZ group, while antioxidant parameters decreased. The number of breeding animals was significantly decreased in the BVZ group compared to the Control and the ABZ groups. This result suggests that ATP may be effective in preventing oxidative damage to the ovaries and infertility induced by bevacizumab.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Standart interventional procedures such as screw instrumentation, aortic arch endovascular surgery and cervical nerve blockade may be of fatal risk due to anatomic reason of variations in the proximal part of the vertebral artery (VA). The aim of this study is to study the VA variations of the extracranial segments to evaluate the frequency of the incident to demonstrate the importance of clinical condition strategy. METHODS: The prevalence of variations and morphometric measurements of the VA in three-dimensional computed tomographic angiography (3D-CTA) scans were studied. Total 400 VA was investigated for the aortic arch origin of the VA, diameter of the VA, its level of entry into the transverse foramen, the dominance sides, and related basilar artery course. RESULTS: 3D-CTA radiographs of 200 Anatolian patients (120 men and 80 women with age range 17-90 years). In most cases (approximately 94%), both sides of VA were the first branch of subclavian artery. While all the right VAs was branched from the subclavian artery, 6% of the left VAs were branched from the aortic arch. 2/3 of them originated from the proximal of the subclavian artery and 1/3 from the distal. The VA which were originating from the proximal of the classical anatomic pattern tended to enter the transverse foramen more distally than C6 level. VAs with a different level of entry than C6 are left-sided and aortic arch originated (out of 8 cases 3 had a level of entry at C5 and 2 at C4). The outer diameter ranges of the prevertebral part of the VA of subclavian origin and left VA of aortic arch origin were 3.2-3.6 mm and 3.2-3.6 mm, respectively. While the diameters of the right and left VAs were almost the same in approximately 20% cases, the left VA was dominant in up to 60% of cases. A significant relationship was found between the side of the dominant VA and in the course of the basilar artery. CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between the dominant side of VA and the course of the basilar artery of its own vessel has never been reported elsewhere. Such anatomical variations, routine preoperative 3D-CTA evaluation is mandatory to prevent the VA injury when C5-C2 instrumentation, anterior cervical decompression, cervical nerve blockade and aortic arch surgery are planned.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Primary aspect of hepatic navigation surgery is the identification of source vascular details to preserve healthy liver which has a vascular anatomy quite challenging for the young surgeons. The purpose was to determine whether three-dimensional (3D) vascular pattern models of preoperative computed tomography (CT) images will assist resident-level trainees for hepatic surgery. METHODS: This study was based on the perception of residents who were presented with 5 different hepatic source vascular patterns and required to compare their perception level of CT, and 1:1 models in terms of importance of variability, differential of patterns and preoperative planning. RESULTS: All residents agree that models provided better understanding of vascular source and improved preplanning. Five stations provided qualitative assessment with results showing the usefulness of porta-celiac models when used as anatomical tools in preplanning (p = 0.04), simulation of interventional procedures (p = 0.02), surgical education (p = 0.01). None of the cases had scored less than 8.5. Responses related to understanding variations were significantly higher in the perception of the 3D model in all cases, furthermore 3D models were more useful for seniors in more complex cases 3 and 5. Some open-ended answers: "The 3D model can completely change the operation plan" One of the major factors for anatomical resection of liver transplantation is the positional relationship between the hepatic arteries and the portal veins. CONCLUSION: The plastic-like material presenting the hepatic vascularity enables the visualization of the origin, pattern, shape, and angle of the branches with appropriate spatial perception thus making it well-structured.

RESUMO

Although valproic acid (VPA) is a low-cost and effective drug, it is known to cause organ toxicity via oxidative stress and related process. In present study, we aimed to evaluate the possible protective effects of thymoquinone (TMQ) on VPA-induced testicular toxicity. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three as control, VPA (500 mg kg-1  day-1 ) for 14 days and VPA plus TMQ (50 mg kg-1  day-1 for 14 days) with seven rats in. Spermatic and interstitial degenerations induced by VPA were ameliorated with TMQ. In VPA group, increased TOS and OSI levels, and decreased TAS level were seen. TMQ reversed these oxidative stress parameters significantly. In Western analysis, VPA was found to increase the expressions of phospho-nuclear factor kappa beta (p-Nf-kB) and Caspase-3. These expressions were decreased by TMQ significantly. Intense immunostaining for p-Nf-kB, Caspase-3 and NADPH oxidase 2 induced by VPA were transformed to moderate immunostaining by TMQ. VPA-induced inflammation and apoptosis that were developed mainly by p-Nf-kB pathway were attenuated by TMQ. TMQ can be a candidate supportive treatment for patients who need long-term and high-dose VPA therapy. TMQ inhibits the Nf-kB activation, and in addition to antioxidant property, it shows anti-inflammatory feature on VPA-induced testicular toxicity.

RESUMO

Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites that are found ubiquitously in plants, fruits, and vegetables. Many studies have shown that regular consumption of these compounds could have a positive effect on our health. The aim of this study was to compare the phytochemical contents of the water extracts from three different plants used as folk remedies in Turkey: Aesculus hippocastanum, Olea europaea, and Hypericum perforatum. A liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) analysis was performed to explore the phenolic profiles. The biological activities of these extracts were also evaluated in terms of their antioxidant activities (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl DPPH, 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid ABTS, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power Assay FRAP, cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity CUPRAC, ß-carotene, phosphomolybdenum, and metal chelating) and enzyme inhibitory properties (against acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase). The aqueous extract of H. perforatum showed the highest levels of total phenolic, flavonoid, and saponin contents. Protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, verbascoside, hesperidin, hyperoside, apigenin 7-hexosides, and quercetin were the most common compounds found in this species. The results confirm that A. hippocastanum, O. europaea, and H. perforatum represent a potential source of natural-derived molecules with positive properties that could be used as valid starting point for new food supplements, and drugs in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries.

RESUMO

The purpose of the study is to examine the protective effect of resveratrol on the fatty acid synthase gene expression against the side-effects of risperidone in an experimental model in rat liver. In this study, thirty-five female Spraque-Dawley rats were divided into five groups (n = 7): Control, RIS (2 mg/kg risperidone daily), RSV1 (2 mg/kg risperidone + 20 mg/kg resveratrol), RSV2 (2 mg/kg risperidone + 40 mg/kg resveratrol), and RSV3 group (2 mg/kg risperidone + 80 mg/kg resveratrol). On treatment day 15, liver tissue was taken for analysis. The resveratrol treatment significantly reduced weight gain as opposed to the risperidone administration. Moreover, the fatty acid synthase gene expression level increased significantly in RSV1 group (p = 0.011). In addition, resveratrol enhanced the total antioxidant status, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and decreased alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total cholesterol, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, oxidative stress index, triglycerides, and total oxidant status levels significantly (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study revealed that treatment with resveratrol might protect liver tissue against the side--effects of risperidone over fatty acid synthase gene expression. Resveratrol could be an effective course of therapy for enhancing therapeutic efficacy.

RESUMO

The three-dimensional (3D) visualization of dural venous sinuses (DVS) networks is desired by surgical trainers to create a clear mental picture of the neuroanatomical orientation of the complex cerebral anatomy. Our purpose is to document those identified during routine 3D venography created through 3D models using two-dimensional axial images for teaching and learning neuroanatomy. Anatomical data were segmented and extracted from imaging of the DVS of healthy people. The digital data of the extracted anatomical surfaces was then edited and smoothed, resulting in a set of digital 3D models of the superior sagittal, inferior sagittal, transverse, and sigmoid, rectus sinuses, and internal jugular veins. A combination of 3D printing technology and casting processes led to the creation of realistic neuroanatomical models that include high-fidelity reproductions of the neuroanatomical features of DVS. The life-size DVS training models were provided good detail and representation of the spatial distances. Geometrical details between the neighboring of DVS could be easily manipulated and explored from different angles. A graspable, patient-specific, 3D-printed model of DVS geometry could provide an improved understanding of the complex brain anatomy. These models have various benefits such as the ability to adjust properties, to convert two-dimension images of the patient into three-dimension images, to have different color options, and to be economical. Neuroanatomy experts can model such as the reliability and validity of the designed models, enhance patient satisfaction with improved clinical examination, and demonstrate clinical interventions by simulation; thus, they teach neuroanatomy training with effective teaching styles.

RESUMO

To create realistic three-dimensional (3D) vascular models from 3D time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (3D-TOF MRA) of an intracranial aneurysm (IA). Thirty-two IAs in 31 patients were printed using 3D-TOF MRA source images from polylactic acid (PLA) raw material. Two observers measured the maximum IA diameter at the longest width twice separately. A total mean of four measurements as well as each observer's individual average MRA lengths were calculated. After printing, 3D-printed anatomic models (PAM) underwent computed tomography (CT) acquisition and each observer measured them using the same algorithm as applied to MRA. Inter- and intra-observer consistency for the MRA and CT measurements were analyzed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and a Bland-Altman plot. The mean maximum aneurysm diameter obtained from four MRA evaluations was 8.49 mm, whereas it was 8.83 mm according to the CT 3D PAM measurement. The Wilcoxon test revealed slightly larger mean CT 3D PAM diameters than the MRA measurements. The Spearman's correlation test yielded a positive correlation between MRA and CT lengths of 3D PAMs. Inter and intra-observer consistency were high in consecutive MRA and CT measurements. According to Bland-Altman analyses, the aneurysmal dimensions obtained from CT were higher for observer 1 and observer 2 (a mean of 0.32 mm and 0.35 mm, respectively) compared to the MRA measurements. CT dimensions were slightly overestimated compared to MRA measurements of the created models. We believe the discrepancy may be related to the Laplacian algorithm applied for surface smoothing and the high slice thickness selection that was used. However, ICC provided high consistency and reproducibility in our cohort. Therefore, it is technically possible to produce 3D intracranial aneurysm models from 3D-TOF MRA images.

RESUMO

This study investigates the predictive power of serum progesterone/estradiol (P/E2) level for estimating the live birth rate in patients who had a serum progesterone (P) rate ≥ 1.5 ng/mL on the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration day and who received the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist protocol and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This retrospective cohort study included 176 cycles. The P/E2 ratio was lower in patients with a live birth (0.73 ± 0.54) than those without a live birth (1.05 ± 1.38), but the difference was not statistically significant (p = .158). According to the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of the hCG day P/E2 ratio, the area under the curve was 0.579 (95% confidence interval: 0.478 - 0.680, p = .158) for predicting live birth. In conclusion, this study suggests that a P/E2 ratio is not a significant predictor of a live birth rate in the patients with an hCG-day serum progesterone level of ≥1.5 ng/mL undergoing GnRH antagonist ICSI cycles with a fresh embryo transfer. Impact statement What is already known on this subject? As the progesterone (P) levels in the late follicular phase correlate with the estradiol (E2) levels and the increase in mature follicles, earlier studies have proposed the trigger-day progesterone/estradiol (P/E2) ratio as a potential new marker for a premature luteinisation and live birth success. Most of these studies were conducted on long agonist cycles, and found that arbitrarily defined P/E2 ratio of >1 to be associated with poor pregnancy outcomes. What do the results of this study add? This study retrospectively examines the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist cycles with a trigger-day serum P value of ≥1.5 ng/mL undergoing the intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis did not identify a statistically significant threshold value for the trigger-day P/E2 ratio that was beneficial in predicting a live birth. The P/E2 ratio was also lower in the cycles with a live birth than those without a live birth, although the difference was not statistically significant. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? The trigger-day P/E2 ratio does not seem to be an efficient prognostic factor for a live birth in the GnRH antagonist ICSI cycles with a trigger-day serum progesterone level of ≥1.5 ng/mL. Further studies are needed to clarify the association of the trigger-day P/E2 ratio and the pregnancy outcomes in GnRH antagonist ICSI cycles.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As buttocks region is one of the most characteristic features of the ideal female body figure, the popularity of gluteal region contouring is on the rise. Perception of body form is influenced by its shape and size. Interventions to modify the form of this region are often difficult due to influence. The aim of this study is to investigate the attractiveness of various buttock shapes with the aid of a dedicated software. METHODS: Standard personal photographs of the lower body were obtained from 200 healthy volunteers. Linear analyses were made and anatomical perception was calculated according to reference points. RESULTS: Compared to males, all measurements concerning buttock dimensions were a significantly greater in females. Proportional assessments revealed that in females, the most attractive buttock waist-to-hip ratio was 0.75 from the posterior view. This ratio was 0.85 in males. From the lateral view, the most attractive buttocks have a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.70 in females. Positioning of the lateral prominence at the inferior gluteal fold was rated by 25% of the respondents as the most attractive in males from the posterior view. From the lateral view, the most prominent portion positioned at the midpoint (a 50:50 vertical ratio) was considered the most attractive for females. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that utilizing digitalized reference values for a given body region may be an invaluable tool for determination of the correct fat volume, thus individualization of body contouring procedures. With the help of certain software, this research has shown that it is possible to measure the parameters of buttock, which may in turn be used to offer the best solution for any individual in quest for an improved buttocks form. New ideal waist-to-hip ratios of 0.7 update the previous standards.

RESUMO

Lhermitte-Duclos disease (LDD) is a rare, slow-growing, benign lesion of the cerebellum. It is often seen in the second and fourth decades. This disease is extremely rare in childhood. A 6-year-old girl presented with loss of balance. A mass lesion in the right cerebellum was detected by magnetic resonance imaging. The patient underwent surgical removal of the lesion, and the histological diagnosis was dysplastic gangliocytoma (LDD). The patient was discharged without complication, and her balance improved in the follow-up period. In this report, we present this rare occurrence in childhood and discuss the clinical course and management. LDD is very rare in early childhood and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of posterior fossa lesions.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Lateral supraorbital approach is a simpler and quicker method than pterional approach. It provides a more anterior projection when compared to the pterional approach. There are some minor differences of the modified lateral supraorbital approach when compared to lateral supraorbital approach. It is directed more subfrontally and anterior than the pterional and lateral supraorbital approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used modified lateral supraorbital approach in 100 cases between 2012 and 2015 in Medical Park Izmir Hospital/Turkey. The assessed data were as follows: age, gender, Glasgow coma scale at admission, the localization of pathology, the condition of surgical obliteration for aneurysm, excision grade for meningioma, length of stay in the hospital and Glasgow outcoma scale at discharge. RESULTS: Of all patients, 58 (58%) were men and 42 (42%) were women. Our cases were anterior communicating artery aneurysms (41 cases), tuberculum sella and medial sphenoid wing meningiomas (22 cases), middle cerebral artery aneurysms (15 cases), olfactory groove meningiomas (15 cases), anterior choroidal artery aneurysms (4 cases) and posterior communicating artery aneurysms (3 cases). 4 patients died and the mortality rate of the study cohort was 4%. CONCLUSIONS: The MLSA is faster, simpler and less invasive than the PA and LSA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Anterior mandibular (interforaminal) region is important in implant applications as it serves a basis for neurovascular bedding and holds the prosthesis for patients. Treatment planning for dental implant patients is often complicated by the unknown extent of the anterior loop of the neurovascular bundle. Anatomical structures including mandibular incisive canal (MIC) and lingual foramen (LF) should also be examined as part of the detailed analysis for their neurovascular structures. This study aimed to detect the positions of LF and MIC as well as the prolongation of interforaminal region in Anatolian population to supply the reference data of the surgical safe zone in chin for the clinicians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mandibles of 70 adult specimens (35 edentulous + 35 dentate) were retrieved from the Department of Anatomy, Ege University. Images of the dry mandibles were obtained using a cone beam computed tomography unit applying a standardized exposure protocol. Afterwards, mandibles were sawn into vertical sections according to the respective tomographic cross-sections. Images were evaluated for the absence/presence of the MIC, its dimensions and antero-posterior length for both edentulous and dentate groups. In addition; the presence, number, location, labial canal and LF diameter and height of the LF were determined for both groups. RESULTS: The MIC was observed in 80 and 68.6% of the dentate and edentulous groups, consecutively (p > 0.05). The MIC continued towards the incisor region in a slightly downward direction. The LF was observed in all dentate mandibles (100%), while it was present in 94.3% of the edentulous mandibles (p > 0.05). For the dentate group, 62.9% of the specimens had two foramens and 20% had three foramens in the mandibular midline. Mean length of the MIC in dentate groups and edentulous groups was measured as 2.55 ± 0.809 and 3.08 ± 1.745 mm, respectively. Well-defined MIC mean diameter in dentate groups and edentulous groups were measured as 2.44 ± 0.702 and 2.35 ± 0.652 mm, respectively. Significant difference was found between dentate and edentulous group in most of the parameters except for the LF and the diameter of the MIC (p > 0.05). The correlation between observers' measurements ranged between 0.742 and 0.993 for all anatomical landmarks and mandible groups. CONCLUSION: The MIC and LF are associated with neurovascular bundle variations in number, location and size. Therefore, clinicians should determine each of these anatomical structures on a case-by-case basis to recognize their presence and to take measures for the possible implications of various treatment options. These guidelines included leaving a 2 mm safety zone between an implant and the coronal aspect of the neurovascular bundle. To avoid neurovascular injury during surgery in the interforaminal area, guidelines were developed with respect to validating the presence of an anterior loop of the neurovascular bundle.
