Understanding the relationships between functional traits and environment is increasingly important for assessing ecosystem health and forecasting biotic responses to future environmental change. Taxon-free analyses of functional traits (ecometrics) allow for testing the performance of such traits through time, utilizing both the fossil record and paleoenvironmental proxies. Here, we test the role of body size as a functional trait with respect to climate, using turtles as a model system. We examine the influence of mass-specific metabolic rate as a functional factor in the sorting of body size with environmental temperature and investigate the utility of community body size composition as an ecometric correlated to climate variables. We then apply our results to the fossil record of the Plio-Pleistocene Shungura Formation in Ethiopia. Results show that turtle body sizes scale with mass-specific metabolic rate for larger taxa, but not for the majority of species, indicating that metabolism is not a primary driver of size. Body size ecometrics have stronger predictive power at continental than at global scales, but without a single, dominant predictive functional relationship. Application of ecometrics to the Shungura fossil record suggests that turtle paleocommunity ecometrics coarsely track independent paleoclimate estimates at local scales. We hypothesize that both human disruption and biotic interactions limit the ecometric fit of size to climate in this clade. Nonetheless, examination of the consistency of trait-environment relationships through deep and shallow time provides a means for testing anthropogenic influences on ecosystems.

Nicotine and tobacco-related deaths remains a leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. Several studies indicate that modulation of the endocannabinoid system, primarily of the endocannabinoid 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), alters nicotinic dependence behaviors in rodents. This study, using transgenic knock-out (KO) mice, evaluated the role of the two 2-AG biosynthesis enzymes, (Diacylglycerol lipase-α) DAGL-α and DAGL-ß in spontaneous nicotine withdrawal. DAGL-α deletion prevents somatic and affective signs of nicotine withdrawal, while DAGL-ß deletion plays a role in hyperalgesia due to nicotine withdrawal. These results suggest a differential role of these enzymes in the various signs of nicotine withdrawal. Our behavioral findings relate to the distribution of these enzymes with DAGL-ß being highly expressed in macrophages and DAGL-α in neurons. This study offers new potential targets for smoking cessation therapies.

In the last decade, declines in the population of wild blue mussels Mytilus edulis in the Tamar estuary (United Kingdom) have been noted. In archived samples collected from 2013 to 2019, between 7% (in 2013) and 18% (in 2019) showed large granulocytoma and haemocytic infiltration in the interstitial tissue of the digestive gland. Four samples were selected for 16S rRNA gene Nanopore sequencing. A consensus sequence of 1449 bp showed nucleotide similarities between 99.93-100% with published sequences of Francisella halioticida. In situ hybridisation (ISH) confirmed the presence of F. halioticida DNA within individual granulocytes of granulocytomas and also in prokaryotic-like inclusion bodies within the digestive epithelial cells. The design of diagnostic tests for surveillance of F. halioticida, including more specific ISH probes and sequencing the genome of the isolates infecting mussels, will shed more light on the pathogenicity and spread of this pathogen.
