RESUMO

A novel structure was observed below the smectic-A-smectic-C phase transition in a very thin open cell having an air interface above and enforced planar anchoring at the substrate below. The structure appears as periodic dark and light streaks running perpendicular to the oily streaks, which are present in the smectic-A phase [D. Coursault et al., Soft Matter, 2016, 12, 678]. These new streaks, which we call "soapy streaks", form by extending from one oily streak to the next in discrete steps, eliminating optical evidence at visible wavelengths of the oily streaks. At lower temperatures the streaks can undulate and exhibit a sawtooth-like structure; such a structure is chiral in two dimensions. A possible scenario for the origin of these streaks is presented.

A polyimide substrate was scribed using the stylus of an atomic force microscope, then covered with a nematic liquid crystal. The fiber from a near field scanning optical microscope was immersed into the liquid crystal and rastered approximately 80 nm above the surface, thereby obviating smearing effects that occur in thicker samples. By appropriate averaging of multiple data sets, a histogram of the "frozen-in" director deviation Δφ from the average easy axis was obtained, having a full-width-half-maximum of ∼0.02 rad. Additionally, the spatial autocorrelation function of Δφ was extracted, where the primary correlation length was found to be comparable to, but larger than, the liquid crystal's extrapolation length. A secondary characteristic length scale of a few µm was observed, and is thought to be an artifact due to material ejection during the scribing process. Our results demonstrate the utility of nanoscale imaging of the interface behavior inside the liquid crystal.

RESUMO

Ferrofluids are familiar as colloidal suspensions of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in aqueous or organic solvents. The dispersed particles are randomly oriented but their moments become aligned if a magnetic field is applied, producing a variety of exotic and useful magnetomechanical effects. A longstanding interest and challenge has been to make such suspensions macroscopically ferromagnetic, that is having uniform magnetic alignment in the absence of a field. Here we report a fluid suspension of magnetic nanoplates that spontaneously aligns into an equilibrium nematic liquid crystal phase that is also macroscopically ferromagnetic. Its zero-field magnetization produces distinctive magnetic self-interaction effects, including liquid crystal textures of fluid block domains arranged in closed flux loops, and makes this phase highly sensitive, with it dramatically changing shape even in the Earth's magnetic field.

By considering short period helical planar modulations about the layer normal, we construct a model free energy for the ferriclinic phases observed in chiral smectic liquid crystals. We then use this free energy to construct the phase diagram for our model. The resulting phases are compared with the experimentally observed smectic-C* subphases (ferroclinic, antiferroclinic, and heliclinic). A strong coupling is found between the ferroclinic q=2pi/a and the heliclinic q=2pi/3a modes. This coupling was not considered in previous models. The resulting additional stability of this "locked in" phase is discussed.

RESUMO

In a previous article [Phys. Rev. E 60, 1799 (1999)], the authors considered a model Landau free energy that explained the ferriclinic phases of chiral smectic liquid crystals as a series of short period helical modulations. In this paper we begin with a physically more realistic, more microscopic interlayer free energy and show how our previous work can be derived using only simple short-ranged interactions. We then discuss what additional information this provides about the Landau coefficients used previously to construct the phase diagram for the heliclinic phases of chiral smectic liquid crystals. Finally, we investigate a means for explicitly including chirality in our model.

We have used a high-intensity tunable picosecond infrared laser source to measure the spectral content of light scattered near the second harmonic for two well-known organic dyes, p-Nitroaniline and Disperse Red 1, at a number of wavelengths in the near infrared. We found that in Disperse red 1 a broad two-photon fluorescence competes with the sharp hyper-Rayleigh peak. Further, dephasing of the virtual excited state leads to elimination of hyper-Rayleigh scattering in favor of fluorescence if the harmonic is in the linear absorption tail. We determined the dispersion of the magnitude of the first hyperpolarizability for both dyes, using a simple referencing technique, and found it to be consistent with that of a two-level dispersion model.

The optical retardation of a liquid crystal above the nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature T(NI) and subjected to planar alignment conditions at the substrate was investigated in the presence of an electric field applied normal to the substrates. The response was found to exhibit "S"-shaped behavior with electric field, and was larger near T(NI) than well above T(NI). The results were examined in the context of a model that permits both biaxiality and a field-induced tilt of the molecular director. The results suggest that the primary effect of the electric field is to induce biaxiality, and in consequence suppress the order induced by the surface. No clear indication of a Freedericksz-like transition, either experimental or theoretical, was observed.

RESUMO

Static light scattering and electric field-induced Kerr measurements were performed above the nematic-isotropic phase transition of a terminal-lateral-lateral-terminal negative Poisson ratio trimer. For both measurements the inverse susceptibility was observed to be nearly linear with temperature, a result inconsistent with our previously reported Kerr data [Phys. Rev. E 58, 2041 (1998)].

RESUMO

A new method is described for reducing the shielding-error function in the 'supershielding' approach to designing MRI systems. The method is thus shown to lead to significantly better shielding and better control of eddy current effects associated with gradient coils. To illustrate this technique, a set of results for a z-gradient coil is presented. A generalization to non-standard geometries can be made in a straightforward manner with the new method. The usefulness of the relationship of all fringe-field quantities to the shielding-error function is emphasized. The formal limit of perfect shielding in a 'least-squares' sense is shown for a simple strip-shield model along with a numerical eigenvalue study for comparison with the theoretical limit.
