RESUMO

Cobalt-based spinel oxides (i.e., Co3O4) are emerging as low-cost and selective electrocatalysts for the electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3-RR) to ammonia (NH3), although their activity is still unsatisfactory and the genuine active site is unclear. Here, we discover that the NO3-RR activity of Co3O4 is highly dependent on the geometric location of the Co site, and the NO3-RR prefers to occur at octahedral Co (CoOh) rather than tetrahedral Co (CoTd) sites. Moreover, CoOhO6 is electrochemically transformed to CoOhO5 along with the formation of O vacancies (Ov) during the process of NO3-RR. Both experimental and theoretic results reveal that in situ generated CoOhO5-Ov configuration is the genuine active site for the NO3-RR. To further enhance the activity of CoOh sites, we replace inert CoTd with different contents of Cu2+ cations, and a volcano-shape correlation between NO3-RR activity and electronic structures of CoOh is observed. Impressively, in 1.0 M KOH, (Cu0.6Co0.4)Co2O4 with optimized CoOh sites achieves a maximum NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 96.5% with an ultrahigh NH3 rate of 1.09 mmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.45 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, outperforming most of other reported nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts. Clearly, this work paves new pathways for boosting the NO3-RR activity of Co-based spinels by tuning local electronic structures of CoOh sites.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a deep learning algorithm, Pneumonia-Plus, based on computed tomography (CT) images for accurate classification of bacterial, fungal, and viral pneumonia. METHODS: A total of 2763 participants with chest CT images and definite pathogen diagnosis were included to train and validate an algorithm. Pneumonia-Plus was prospectively tested on a nonoverlapping dataset of 173 patients. The algorithm's performance in classifying three types of pneumonia was compared to that of three radiologists using the McNemar test to verify its clinical usefulness. RESULTS: Among the 173 patients, area under the curve (AUC) values for viral, fungal, and bacterial pneumonia were 0.816, 0.715, and 0.934, respectively. Viral pneumonia was accurately classified with sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 0.847, 0.919, and 0.873. Three radiologists also showed good consistency with Pneumonia-Plus. The AUC values of bacterial, fungal, and viral pneumonia were 0.480, 0.541, and 0.580 (radiologist 1: 3-year experience); 0.637, 0.693, and 0.730 (radiologist 2: 7-year experience); and 0.734, 0.757, and 0.847 (radiologist 3: 12-year experience), respectively. The McNemar test results for sensitivity showed that the diagnostic performance of the algorithm was significantly better than that of radiologist 1 and radiologist 2 (p < 0.05) in differentiating bacterial and viral pneumonia. Radiologist 3 had a higher diagnostic accuracy than the algorithm. CONCLUSIONS: The Pneumonia-Plus algorithm is used to differentiate between bacterial, fungal, and viral pneumonia, which has reached the level of an attending radiologist and reduce the risk of misdiagnosis. The Pneumonia-Plus is important for appropriate treatment and avoiding the use of unnecessary antibiotics, and provide timely information to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Pneumonia-Plus algorithm could assist in the accurate classification of pneumonia based on CT images, which has great clinical value in avoiding the use of unnecessary antibiotics, and providing timely information to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes. KEY POINTS: • The Pneumonia-Plus algorithm trained from data collected from multiple centers can accurately identify bacterial, fungal, and viral pneumonia. • The Pneumonia-Plus algorithm was found to have better sensitivity in classifying viral and bacterial pneumonia in comparison to radiologist 1 (5-year experience) and radiologist 2 (7-year experience). • The Pneumonia-Plus algorithm is used to differentiate between bacterial, fungal, and viral pneumonia, which has reached the level of an attending radiologist.

RESUMO

The collection of many environmental pollutants from road dust is harmful to living things and their surroundings. Previous studies have confirmed that road dust affects plant pigmentation, pollination, and biochemical properties. However, there are no comprehensive studies on multi-level dust pollution levels and multifaceted physiological properties of plants, and more importantly, there are no studies on atmospheric dust pollution monitors. In this experiment, the effect of road dust on the morphology and biochemistry of Salvia guaranitica St.Hil.was investigated by simulated deposition of different amounts of dust, and the changes of their physiological morphology under different pollution levels were also explored. A control group CK (0.00 g/plant), four experimental groups S1 (0.015 g/plant), S2 (0.030 g/plant), S3 (0.045 g/plant) and S4 (0.060 g/plant) were sprayed with the same dust samples every other day for 30 days. It was found that after 30 days of dust exposure, different degrees of morphological changes and damage occurred in Salvia. The different pollution levels also resulted in different degrees of biochemical characteristics of Salvia. With the increase of pollution, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic and evaporation rates decreased significantly, but the activity of SOD and the content of MDA increased significantly in different experimental groups. Especially, the experiments also revealed that severe road dust pollution caused damage and deformation to stomata, as well as a significant reduction in stomatal and glandular density. In addition, the regression curves of the different physiological responses of Salvia to road dust can be used as a preliminary basis for plant monitoring of dust pollution degrees, thus provided a scientific basis for the use of plant biomonitors in the field of pollution biology.

RESUMO

Stereo depth estimation is an efficient method to perceive three-dimensional structures in real scenes. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised method, to the best of our knowledge, to extract depth information by learning bi-directional pixel movement with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Given left and right views, we use CNNs to learn the task of middle-view synthesis for perceiving bi-directional pixel movement from left-right views to the middle view. The information of pixel movement will be stored in the features after CNNs are trained. Then we use several convolutional layers to extract the information of pixel movement for estimating a depth map of the given scene. Experiments show that our proposed method can significantly provide a high-quality depth map using only a color image as a supervisory signal.

RESUMO

Houttuynia cordata is a medicinal and edible plant with a wide biological interest. Many parts were discarded due to various modes of consumption, resulting in resource waste. In this study, a comprehensive study was conducted on various edible indicators and medicinal components of Houttuynia cordata to understand its edible and medicinal value. The edible indexes of each root, stem, and leaf were determined, and the metabolites of different parts were investigated using the headspace solid-phase micro-extraction technique (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The differential metabolites were screened by orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and clustering analysis. The results of the study showed that the parts of Houttuynia cordata with high edibility values as a vegetable were mainly the roots and leaves, with the highest vitamin C content in the roots and the highest total flavonoids, soluble sugars, and total protein in the leaves. The nutrient content of all the stems of Houttuynia cordata was lower and significantly different from the roots and leaves (p < 0.05). In addition, 209 metabolites were isolated from Houttuynia cordata, 135 in the roots, 146 in the stems, 158 in the leaves, and 91 shared metabolites. The clustering analysis and OPLS-DA found that the parts of Houttuynia cordata can be mainly divided into above-ground parts (leaves and stems) and underground parts (roots). When comparing the differential metabolites between the above-ground parts and underground parts, it was found that the most important medicinal component of Houttuynia cordata, 2-undecanone, was mainly concentrated in the underground parts. The cluster analysis resulted in 28 metabolites with up-regulation and 17 metabolites with down-regulation in the underground parts. Most of the main components of the underground part have pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antiviral, which are more suitable for drug development. Furthermore, the above-ground part has more spice components and good antioxidant capacity, which is suitable for the extraction of edible flavors. Therefore, by comparing and analyzing the differences between the edible and medicinal uses of different parts of Houttuynia cordata as a medicinal and food plant, good insights can be obtained into food development, pharmaceutical applications, agricultural development, and the hygiene and cosmetic industries. This paper provides a scientific basis for quality control and clinical use.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional (3D) light-field display has achieved a great improvement. However, the collection of dense viewpoints in the real 3D scene is still a bottleneck. Virtual views can be generated by unsupervised networks, but the quality of different views is inconsistent because networks are separately trained on each posed view. Here, a virtual view synthesis method for the 3D light-field display based on scene tower blending is presented, which can synthesize high quality virtual views with correct occlusions by blending all tower results, and dense viewpoints on 3D light-field display can be provided with smooth motion parallax. Posed views are combinatorially input into diverse unsupervised CNNs to predict respective input-view towers, and towers of the same viewpoint are fused together. All posed-view towers are blended as a scene color tower and a scene selection tower, so that 3D scene distributions at different depth planes can be accurately estimated. Blended scene towers are soft-projected to synthesize virtual views with correct occlusions. A denoising network is used to improve the image quality of final synthetic views. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method, which shows outstanding performances under various disparities. PSNR of the virtual views are about 30 dB and SSIM is above 0.91. We believe that our view synthesis method will be helpful for future applications of the 3D light-field display.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The ray floret shapes referred to as petal types on the chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium Ramat.) capitulum is extremely abundant, which is one of the most important ornamental traits of chrysanthemum. However, the regulatory mechanisms of different ray floret shapes are still unknown. C. vestitum is a major origin species of cultivated chrysanthemum and has flat, spoon, and tubular type of ray florets which are the three basic petal types of chrysanthemum. Therefore, it is an ideal model material for studying ray floret morphogenesis in chrysanthemum. Here, using morphological, gene expression and transcriptomic analyses of different ray floret types of C. vestitum, we explored the developmental processes and underlying regulatory networks of ray florets. RESULTS: The formation of the flat type was due to stagnation of its dorsal petal primordium, while the petal primordium of the tubular type had an intact ring shape. Morphological differences between the two ray floret types occurred during the initial stage with vigorous cell division. Analysis of genes related to flower development showed that CYCLOIDEA genes, including CYC2b, CYC2d, CYC2e, and CYC2f, were differentially expressed in different ray floret types, while the transcriptional levels of others, such as MADS-box genes, were not significantly different. Hormone-related genes, including SMALL AUXIN UPREGULATED RNA (SAUR), GRETCHEN HAGEN3 (GH3), GIBBERELLIN 2-BETA-DIOXYGENASE 1 (GA2OX1) and APETALA2/ETHYLENE RESPONSIVE FACTOR (AP2/ERF), were identified from 1532 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in pairwise comparisons among the flat, spoon, and tubular types, with significantly higher expression in the tubular type than that in the flat type and potential involvement in the morphogenesis of different ray floret types. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings, together with the gene interactional relationships reported for Arabidopsis thaliana, suggest that hormone-related genes are highly expressed in the tubular type, promoting petal cell division and leading to the formation of a complete ring of the petal primordium. These results provide novel insights into the morphological variation of ray floret of chrysanthemum.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The role of postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) in women with pT1-T2N1 breast cancer is controversial. The authors developed a nomogram that was predictive for overall survival (OS) and identified patients who derived no benefit from PMRT. METHODS: The authors retrospectively evaluated 4869 patients with pT1-T2N1 breast cancer who were treated with mastectomy between 2000 and 2014 in 11 Chinese hospitals. Rates of locoregional recurrence and distant metastasis were calculated using competing risk analysis, and disease-free survival and OS rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Based on the risk factors identified from Cox regression analysis in 3298 unirradiated patients, a nomogram predicting OS was developed. The benefit of PMRT was evaluated in different risk groups stratified by the nomogram model. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 65.9 months, the 5-year OS, disease-free survival, locoregional recurrence, and distant metastasis rates were 93.3%, 84.3%, 5.2%, and 8.3%, respectively. A total of 1571 patients (32.3%) underwent PMRT. On multivariable analyses, PMRT was found to increase OS significantly (hazard ratio, 0.61; P = .002). An OS prediction nomogram evaluated the effect of age; tumor location; tumor size; positive lymph node ratio; estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 status; and treatment with trastuzumab. Based on nomogram scores, the entire patient cohort was classified into 3 risk groups. PMRT significantly improved the OS of patients in the intermediate-risk (P < .001) and high-risk groups (P = .004), but not in the low-risk group (P = .728). CONCLUSIONS: The authors developed a nomogram that is predictive of OS among women with pT1-T2N1 breast cancer after mastectomy. This nomogram may help to select a subgroup of patients with a good prognosis who will not benefit from PMRT.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional (3D) light field display, as a potential future display method, has attracted considerable attention. However, there still exist certain issues to be addressed, especially the capture of dense views in real 3D scenes. Using sparse cameras associated with view synthesis algorithm has become a practical method. Supervised convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to synthesize virtual views. However, such a large amount of training target views is sometimes difficult to be obtained and the training position is relatively fixed. Novel views can also be synthesized by unsupervised network MPVN, but the method has strict requirements on capturing multiple uniform horizontal viewpoints, which is not suitable in practice. Here, a method of dense-view synthesis based on unsupervised learning is presented, which can synthesize arbitrary virtual views with multiple free-posed views captured in the real 3D scene based on unsupervised learning. Multiple posed views are reprojected to the target position and input into the neural network. The network outputs a color tower and a selection tower indicating the scene distribution along the depth direction. A single image is yielded by the weighted summation of two towers. The proposed network is end-to-end trained based on unsupervised learning by minimizing errors during reconstructions of posed views. A virtual view can be predicted in a high quality by reprojecting posed views to the desired position. Additionally, a sequence of dense virtual views can be generated for 3D light-field display by repeated predictions. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of our proposed network. PSNR of synthesized views are around 30dB and SSIM are over 0.90. Since multiple cameras are supported to be placed in free-posed positions, there are not strict physical requirements and the proposed method can be flexibly used for the real scene capture. We believe this approach will contribute to the wide applications of 3D light-field display in the future.

RESUMO

Flower color is a charming phenotype with very important ornamental and commercial values. Anthocyanins play a critical role in determining flower color pattern formation, and their biosynthesis is typically regulated by R2R3-MYB transcription factors (TFs). Paeonia suffruticosa is a famous ornamental plant with colorful flowers. However, little is known about the R2R3-MYB TFs that regulate anthocyanin accumulation in P. suffruticosa. In the present study, two R2R3-MYB TFs, namely, PsMYB114L and PsMYB12L, were isolated from the petals of P. suffruticosa 'Shima Nishiki' and functionally characterized. Sequence analysis suggested that PsMYB114L contained a bHLH-interaction motif, whereas PsMYB12L contained two flavonol-specific motifs (SG7 and SG7-2). Subsequently, the in vivo function of PsMYB114L and PsMYB12L was investigated by their heterologous expression in Arabidopsis thaliana and apple calli. In transgenic Arabidopsis plants, overexpression of PsMYB114L and of PsMYB12L caused a significantly higher accumulation of anthocyanins, resulting in purple-red leaves. Transgenic apple calli overexpressing PsMYB114L and PsMYB12L also significantly enhanced the anthocyanins content and resulted in a change in the callus color to red. Meanwhile, gene expression analysis in A. thaliana and apple calli suggested that the expression levels of the flavonol synthase (MdFLS) and anthocyanidin reductase (MdANR) genes were significantly downregulated and the dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (AtDFR) and anthocyanin synthase (AtANS) genes were significantly upregulated in transgenic lines of PsMYB114L. Moreover, the expression level of the FLS gene (MdFLS) was significantly downregulated and the DFR (AtDFR/MdDFR) and ANS (AtANS/MdANS) genes were all significantly upregulated in transgenic lines plants of PsMYB12L. These results indicate that PsMYB114L and PsMYB12L both enhance anthocyanin accumulation by specifically regulating the expression of some anthocyanin biosynthesis-related genes in different plant species. Together, these results provide a valuable resource with which to further study the regulatory mechanism of anthocyanin biosynthesis in P. suffruticosa and for the breeding of tree peony cultivars with novel and charming flower colors.

RESUMO

Inflammasomes are multiprotein complexes that control the production of IL-1ß and IL-18. NLRP3 inflammasome, the most characterized inflammasome, plays prominent roles in defense against infection, however aberrant activation is deleterious and leads to diseases. Therefore, its tight control offers therapeutic promise. Liver X receptors (LXRs) have significant anti-inflammatory properties. Whether LXRs regulate inflammasome remains unresolved. We thus tested the hypothesis that LXR's anti-inflammatory properties may result from its ability to suppress inflammasome activation. In this study, LXRs agonists inhibited the induction of IL-1ß production, caspase-1 cleavage and ASC oligomerization by NLRP3 inflammasome. The agonists also inhibited inflammasome-associated mtROS production. Importantly, the agonists inhibited the priming of inflammasome activation. In vivo data also showed that LXRs agonist prevented NLRP3-dependent peritonitis. In conclusion, LXRs agonists are identified to potently suppress NLRP3 inflammasome and the regulation of LXRs signaling is a potential therapeutic for inflammasome-driven diseases.

RESUMO

The experiment was conducted to investigate the potential effects of steviol glycosides on growth performance, rumen fermentation processes, and microbial diversity in Hu sheep. A single-factor design was used for the trial. Twenty healthy weaned Hu lambs, possessing comparable body weights averaging 18.31 ± 1.24 kg, were randomly allocated into two distinct groups: the control group (CON) and the experimental group (STE), with each comprising 10 lambs. The CON was fed the basal diet, and the STE was supplemented with 0.07% steviol glycosides based on the basal diet. During the experimental period, variations in body weight and feed intake were closely monitored and recorded. After feeding for 90 d, blood was collected to determine blood biochemical indices, and rumen fluid samples were gathered for an in-depth analysis of rumen fermentation parameters and microbial diversity. The outcomes revealed no statistically significant differences in growth performance or serum biochemical indices between the two groups (p > 0.05). Rumen pH in STE and CON was within the normal range. The rumen ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and acetic acid (AA) content of STE decreased significantly compared with CON (p < 0.05). No significant variations were observed in the levels of other volatile fatty acids (VFAs) between the two groups (p > 0.05). The rumen microbial OTUs count, as well as the Shannon, Simpson, Chao1, and Ace indices, were notably lower in the STE group compared to the CON group (p < 0.05). Additionally, at the phylum level, the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria collectively accounted for over 97% of the total phylum composition. In comparison to the CON group, the STE group exhibited an increase in the relative abundance of Proteobacteria (p < 0.05), accompanied by a significant reduction in the relative abundance of Patescibacteria and Desulfobacteria (p < 0.05). At the genus level, there was a notable increase in the relative abundance of Prevotella_7 and Succinivibrionaceae_UCG_001 in the STE group, whereas the relative abundance of Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group significantly decreased (p < 0.05). According to the correlation analysis between rumen microflora and VFAs, the relative abundance of Succinivibrionaceae_UCG_001 displayed a significant negative correlation with AA (p < 0.05), whereas Lactobacillus exhibited a notable positive correlation with isobutyric acid (IBA) (p < 0.05). In summary, steviol glycosides had no significant effect on the production performance and blood biochemical indexes of Hu sheep. Steviol glycosides can improve rumen fermentation parameters and rumen microflora structure of Hu sheep and have a certain effect on rumen microbial diversity and composition.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Treatment modalities of ependymoma in infants remain controversial. Postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy could prolong overall survival but has the potential to affect nervous system development in infants. The role of adjuvant chemotherapy in prolonging overall survival for infants with ependymoma is still unclear. Therefore we designed this study to explore the effect of treatment modalities on survival time of infants with ependymoma. METHODS: We studied 72 infants with ependymoma from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database in this retrospective analysis. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were adopted to determine hazard ratios and compare overall survival. RESULTS: Among 72 infants with ependymoma, 35 were male (48.6%) and 37 were female (51.4%). The 5-year overall survival of all patients was 67%. Forty-six infants (63.9%) received gross total resection, 20 (27.8%) received subtotal resection, and 6 (8.3%) did not receive surgical resection or only autopsy. Twenty-one infants (29.2%) received radiotherapy, and 45 (62.5%) received chemotherapy. Multivariate analysis revealed that patients accepted surgical resection (No vs. gross total resection, P < 0.001; No vs. subtotal resection, P = 0.026) and chemotherapy (No vs. Yes, P = 0.024) are the independent prognostic factors for overall survival. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment modality is associated with survival time in infants with ependymoma. The extent of resection and chemotherapy were independent prognostic factors for infants with ependymoma.

RESUMO

The effects of isochlorogenic acid (ICGA) on ewes rumen environment, microbial diversity, and immunity at different physiological stages (estrus, pregnancy and lactation) were studied in this experiment. Twenty healthy female Hu lambs of 1.5 months with similar body weight (17.82 ± 0.98 kg) and body condition were selected and randomly divided into two groups: the control group (CON) and the ICGA group (ICGA). The lambs of CON were fed a basal diet, while the lambs of ICGA were supplemented with 0.1% ICGA based on the basal diet. Lambs rumen fermentation characteristics, microbial diversity and immunity at estrus, pregnancy, and lactation stages were determined and analyzed, respectively. The results showed that the rumen pH in CON increased first and then decreased as lambs grew (p < 0.05). However, it showed the opposite change in ICGA. The content of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) showed the highest at estrus stage in both groups, but it was significantly higher in ICGA than that in CON (p < 0.05). The Acetic acid/propionic acid (A/P) ratio at estrus stage and the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) at pregnancy stage in ICGA were significantly higher than those of the CON (p < 0.05). The 16S rDNA sequencing analysis showed that the Shannon, Chao 1 and ACE indexes of the ICGA were significantly higher than those of the CON both at estrus and lactation stages (p < 0.05), while they showed higher at the pregnancy stage in CON (p > 0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that there were significant differences in rumen microorganism structure between CON and ICGA at all physiological stages (p < 0.01). At the phylum level, compared with the CON, Firmicutes relative abundance of three physiological stages decreased (p > 0.05) while Bacteroidota increased (p > 0.05). The relative abundance of Synergistota at estrus stage and Patescibacteria at the lactation stage increased significantly too (p < 0.05). At the genus level, compared with the CON, the relative abundance of Prevotella at three stages showed the highest (p > 0.05), while the relative abundance of Succiniclasticum, unclassified_Selenomonadaceae and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group showed different abundances at different physiological stages in ICGA. Compared with the CON, the lambs of the ICGA showed higher blood IgG, IgM, and TNF- α contents at three physiological stages and higher IL-6 contents at pregnancy stage (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Adding ICGA could regulate ewes rumen fermentation mode at different physiological stages by increasing rumen NH3-N at estrus, VFAs at pregnancy, and the ratio of A/P at lactation. It optimizes rumen microbial flora of different physiological stages by increasing Bacteroidota relative abundance while reducing Firmicutes relative abundance, maintaining rumen microbial homeostasis at pregnant stage, increasing the number of beneficial bacteria in later lactating and ewes blood immunoglobulins content at three physiological stages.

Twin boundary (TB) engineering provides exciting opportunities to tune the performance levels of metal-based electrocatalysts. However, the controllable construction of TB greatly relies on surfactants, blocking active sites, and electron transfer by surfactants. Here, a surfactant-free and facile strategy is proposed for synthesizing copper (Cu) nanocatalysts with dense hierarchical TB networks (HTBs) by the rapid thermal reductions in metastable CuO nanosheets in H2 . As revealed by in situ transmission electron microscopy, the formation of HTBs is associated with the fragmentation of nanosheets in different directions to generate abundant crystal nuclei and subsequently unconventional crystal growth through the collision and coalescence of nuclei. Impressively, the HTBs endow Cu with excellent electrocatalytic performance for direct nitrate-ammonia conversion, superior to that of Cu with a single-oriented TB and without TB. It is discovered that the HTBs induce the formation of compressive strains, thereby creating a synergistic effect of TBs and strains to efficiently tune the binding energies of Cu with nitrogen intermediates (i.e., NO2 *) and thus promote the tandem reaction process of NO3 - -to-NO2 - and subsequent NO2 - -to-NH3 electrocatalysis. This work demonstrates the crucial role of HTBs for boosting electrocatalysis via the synergistic effect of TBs and strains.

RESUMO

Electrochemical co-reduction of nitrate (NO3-) and carbon dioxide (CO2) has been widely regarded as a promising route to produce urea under ambient conditions, however the yield rate of urea has remained limited. Here, we report an atomically ordered intermetallic pallium-zinc (PdZn) electrocatalyst comprising a high density of PdZn pairs for boosting urea electrosynthesis. It is found that Pd and Zn are responsible for the adsorption and activation of NO3- and CO2, respectively, and thus the co-adsorption and co-activation NO3- and CO2 are achieved in ordered PdZn pairs. More importantly, the ordered and well-defined PdZn pairs provide a dual-site geometric structure conducive to the key C-N coupling with a low kinetical barrier, as demonstrated on both operando measurements and theoretical calculations. Consequently, the PdZn electrocatalyst displays excellent performance for the co-reduction to generate urea with a maximum urea Faradaic efficiency of 62.78% and a urea yield rate of 1274.42 µg mg-1 h-1, and the latter is 1.5-fold larger than disordered pairs in PdZn alloys. This work paves new pathways to boost urea electrosynthesis via constructing ordered dual-metal pairs.

RESUMO

Spinel oxides with tunable chemical compositions have emerged as versatile electrocatalysts, however their performance is greatly limited by small surface area and low electron conductivity. Here, ultrathin high-entropy Fe-based spinel oxides nanosheets are rationally designed (i.e., (Co0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2Mg0.2Cu0.2)Fe2O4; denotes A5Fe2O4) in thickness of ≈4.3 nm with large surface area and highly exposed active sites via a modified sol-gel method. Theoretic and experimental results confirm that the bandgap of A5Fe2O4 nanosheets is significantly smaller than that of ordinary Fe-based spinel oxides, realizing the transformation of binary spinel oxide from semiconductors to metalloids. As a result, such A5Fe2O4 nanosheets manifest excellent performance for the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 -RR) to ammonia (NH3), with a NH3 yield rate of ≈2.1 mmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.5 V versus Reversible hydrogen electrode, outperforming other spinel-based electrocatalysts. Systematic mechanism investigations reveal that the NO3 -RR is mainly occurred on Fe sites, and introducing high-entropy compositions in tetrahedral sites regulates the adsorption strength of N and O-related intermediates on Fe for boosting the NO3 -RR. The above findings offer a high-entropy platform to regulate the bandgap and enhance the electrocatalytic performance of spinel oxides.

RESUMO

This paper reports lithium concentrations and isotopic compositions of olivines in the oceanized subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) peridotites of the Tibetan Yunzhug ophiolite. The results show systematic Li isotope changes with distance from the rim of olivine grains. δ7Li values of olivine in dunites decrease from + 10.46 to + 1.33‰ with increasing distance to olivine rim from 26.15 to 124.71 µm. A negative correlation of δ7Li and Li content in olivine from dunite and harzburgite indicates recent diffusive ingress of Li into the peridotites. The extremely heavy Li isotopic composition requires the seawater or seawater alteration endmember in the mixing model, and reveals Li diffusion from seawater into olivine. As in dunites, olivines in a harzburgite sample show similar variations in δ7Li as a function of distance from the grain rim (e.g., 6.01 to 1.73 in sample 14YZ13). We suggest that the behavior of Li in the oceanized SCLM peridotites may be controlled by Li diffusion from seawater, as Li activity in the liquid state is higher than the solid state in transporting Li through the olivines in the peridotites. This study supports that seawater Li diffusion is one of the important factors for the heterogeneity of mantle Li isotopes in ophiolites.

RESUMO

Hydrazine-assisted water electrolysis provides new opportunities to enable energy-saving hydrogen production while solving the issue of hydrazine pollution. Here, the synthesis of compressively strained Ni2 P as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for boosting both the anodic hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is reported. Different from a multistep synthetic method that induces lattice strain by creating core-shell structures, a facile strategy is developed to tune the strain of Ni2 P via dual-cation co-doping. The obtained Ni2 P with a compressive strain of -3.62% exhibits significantly enhanced activity for both the HzOR and HER than counterparts with tensile strain and without strain. Consequently, the optimized Ni2 P delivers current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 at small cell voltages of 0.16 and 0.39 V for hydrazine-assisted water electrolysis, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the compressive strain promotes water dissociation and concurrently tunes the adsorption strength of hydrogen intermediates, thereby facilitating the HER process on Ni2 P. As for the HzOR, the compressive strain reduces the energy barrier of the potential-determining step for the dehydrogenation of *N2 H4 to *N2 H3 . Clearly, this work paves a facile pathway to the synthesis of lattice-strained electrocatalysts via the dual-cation co-doping.
