RESUMO

This integrative literature review aimed to characterize scientific articles on health-related quality of life - HRQoL - among patients with advanced cancer from national and international literature, and summarize those factors evidenced in the literature that contributed to the improvement or worsening of HRQoL among patients with advanced cancer. The search for materials was conducted in the following databases: CINAHL, EMBASE, PubMed, SciELO and LILACS. Among the 21 articles in the sample, 13 showed an improvement of HRQoL among patients with advanced cancer related to the development of physical, emotional and spiritual interventions. In eight studies, we identified predictive symptoms of low HRQoL, such as pain, fatigue, sleep disorders, depression, nutritional changes, and others. The results showed that clinical manifestations, which many times were inherent in cancer, such as factors that can lower patients' HRQoL, while physical, psychological and spiritual benefits resulting from therapeutic interventions may promote its improvement.

RESUMO

This descriptive and cross-sectional study aimed to examine the socio-demographic/clinical aspects of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and assess the HRQoL of onco- hematological patients undergoing chemotherapy. The data collection instrument was a socio-demographic/clinical questionnaire, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC) QLQ-C-30. The sample consisted of 32 patients, eight of whom (25%) were diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma; nine (28.12%), with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; and 15 (46.87%), with leukemia. The data were analyzed using SPSS software. For the functional scales of the QLQ-C-30 (physical, cognitive, emotional, social and role performance), the mean scores ranged from 54.81 to 41.18, demonstrating an unsatisfactory level of functioning. In the symptom scales, there was a predominance of fatigue (64.57), insomnia (56.90) and loss of appetite (50.71). These symptoms interfered with the patients' physical functioning, demonstrating that the emotional and cognitive side effects of the treatment negatively influenced the HRQoL of the patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: (1) The making of videos includes the pre-production, production and post-production phases. (2) Video is a powerful resource in the construction of knowledge and care practice. (3) The methods for making videos guarantee the quality of the content addressed. (4) Video enhances Nursing professionals' skills in the clinical practice. (5) Educational videos are essential in the training of Nursing professionals. to evaluate the diverse scientific evidence on the methodologies used by Nursing professionals in the production of educational videos. METHOD: an integrative review. The search for primary studies was carried out in the CINAHL, LILACS and MEDLINE/PubMed databases. The sample consisted of 19 research studies. The methodological quality of the studies included was assessed using a tool proposed by the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice and the results were analyzed in a descriptive form. RESULTS: the methodological stages used for the process to elaborate and make the videos include pre-production, production and post-production. The studies reveal that, for the most part, the stages were properly applied and/or described by the authors, in addition to contemplating the method adopted. However, in 14 studies there was no use of a methodological framework to ensure rigor in their conduction and in 11 presented validation by the target audience. CONCLUSION: the synthesis of knowledge showed that there is still a need for attention for the construction of educational videos regarding the methodological framework and validation by the target population. The rigorous execution of the methodological procedures necessary for the development of educational videos, aiming to encourage the acquisition of essential skills for the creation of high-quality teaching materials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the effects of sexuality on depressive symptoms and quality of life in older adults. METHODS: a cross-sectional and analytical study, developed with 596 older adults, who completed four instruments for data collection. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Structural Equation Modeling, with a 95% Confidence Interval. RESULTS: among the sexuality dimensions, only physical and social adversities exerted statistically significant effects on depressive symptoms (SC=-0.095; p=0.003), but with low magnitude. Moreover, all sexuality dimensions had statistically significant effects on quality of life, being of low magnitude for sexual act (SC=0.171; p=0.010) and for physical and social adversities (SC=0.228; p<0.001), and moderate magnitude for affective relationships (SC=0.474; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: effects of different magnitudes were observed between sexuality dimensions on participants' depressive symptoms and quality of life.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of depression and fatigue symptoms in head and neck cancer patients during radiotherapy treatment and relate them symptoms with these patients' quality of life. METHOD: This is a prospective study. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Piper Fatigue Scale-revised and Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy Head and Neck (FACT-H&N) were applied to 41 head and neck cancer patients at three times: at the start of treatment (T1), approximately 15 days after the start of treatment (T2) and at the end of treatment (T3), approximately 30 days after the start of the radiotherapy. RESULTS: The mean BDI and PIPER increased during the radiotherapy treatment. BDI scores did not demonstrate the presence of depression, although the number of symptoms increased, and the presence of fatigue rose as treatment advanced. The mean FACT H&N decreased in the middle and at the end of treatment, indicating worsening in these patients' Quality of Life. CONCLUSIONS: Depression and fatigue symptoms increased during radiotherapy treatment, while QoL levels decreased. This demonstrates that these symptoms are strongly correlated and that their presence negatively influenced QoL. At the start of treatment, nurses need to advise patients and plan care, offering interventions to decrease these symptoms and improve QoL.

RESUMO

The integrative review is one of the methodologies used for evidence-based practice which, in this study, had the objective of surveying and synthesizing the evidence available in the literature regarding the dietary risks for colorectal cancer related to the consumption of meat. The search was made using the LILACS, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and COCHRANE Library databases, and six studies considered pertinent to the consumption of meat were found. Meta-analyses showed that there is an association between the consumption of red meat and an increased risk for colorectal cancer from 28% to 35%, whereas processed meats are associated with a rise in risk from 20% to 49%. Evidence shows that the consumption of red meat, processed meat, and total meat consumption are risk factors for developing polyps and colorectal cancer. The search did not yield any studies referring to the consumption of chicken or fish as risk factors.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: to analyze sexual function and its correlation with sexuality and quality of life in male older adults. METHODS: a cross-sectional study, developed with 231 male older adults. Participants completed four instruments to obtain biosociodemographic data, sexual function, sexuality and quality of life. Analyzes were performed using the Mann-Whitney test and Spearman Correlation. RESULTS: sexual function was positively correlated with sexuality in a moderate magnitude and with quality of life in a low magnitude. Male older adults without sexual dysfunction experienced their sexuality better and had a better quality of life. Finally, partner overall satisfaction was the facet of sexual function that had the highest positive correlation with sexuality, while self-confidence had the highest positive correlation with quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: we suggest that sexual function should be addressed more frequently in Primary Health Care services, as we found statistically significant correlations with sexuality and quality of life components.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between self-esteem and quality of life in the elderly. METHODS: Cross-sectional web survey developed with 519 elderly people. Participants filled out three data collection instruments developed on the Google Forms platform and widely disseminated through all of Brazil. Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney, Pearson correlation, and linear regression with 95% confidence interval were used. RESULTS: Self-esteem was associated with all quality-of-life facets: sensory skills [ß= 1.307; p<0.001]; autonomy [ß= 2.101; p<0.001]; past, present, and future activities [ß= 2.486; p<0.001]; social presence [ß= 2.547; p<0.001]; death and dying [ß= 2.175; p<0.001]; and intimacy [ß=2.378; p<0.001]. CONCLUSION: There is a positive and statistically significant association between self-esteem and quality of life in the elderly. We therefore suggest the development of local policies capable of raising this age groups' self-esteem and reaffirming aging as a new possibility for discoveries and pleasure.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the existence of an association between the biopsychosocial profile of people affected and the number of self-reported clinical complications from COVID-19 in a Brazilian city. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional (baseline) study, nested in a cohort study, carried out with 217 confirmed cases of COVID-19, interviewed from January to October 2021, during home visits, in a city in the south of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A structured questionnaire with the KoboToolbox resource was used. The independent variables were sociodemographic and clinical profile (comorbidities), quality of life, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, and social support. The dependent variable was the number of self-reported clinical complications from COVID-19. The multivariate linear regression technique was adopted for the analyses. RESULTS: The participants reported multiple clinical complications from COVID-19. There were "four or more" complications in 94.6% of the cases. Having a history of high blood pressure was associated with more complications post-SARS-CoV-2 infection, whereas having a caregiver and presenting with post-traumatic stress were associated with fewer COVID-19 complications. CONCLUSION: The multisystemic nature of the complications caused by COVID-19 and the associations identified emphasizes the need for an integrated approach to patients and for studies that monitor the effects of the disease on the demands placed on health systems, aiming to better understand and address them.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the Quality of Life (QoL) and to identify the domains affected in breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant therapy and to correlate them with sociodemographic, clinical and therapeutic characteristics. This is a cross-sectional study with 35 patients, developed from August, 2007, to December, 2008. The Quality of Life Core-30-Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) instrument was used. The general Quality of Life was considered less than satisfactory. The most affected domains were: emotional function, insomnia, pain and fatigue. In the correlations, the patients above 60 years presented worse scores on emotional function, the patients submitted to the surgery related more constipation, patients receiving radiotherapy presented worse scores on general QoL and the ones that had more than six cycles of chemotherapy presented the emotional function affected and dyspnea. The conclusion is that the adjuvant treatments had affected in some way the patients, causing a deficit in the emotional function and other related symptoms, and impaired their QoL.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between self-reported fragility and quality of life in older adults. METHOD: Cross-sectional study carried out with Brazilian older adults between July and October 2020. Three instruments were applied to obtain bio sociodemographic, frailty data and quality of life. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson correlation and multivariate linear regression, adopting a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05). RESULTS: A total of 662 older adults participated. All facets of quality of life were significantly and negatively correlated with reduced strength, reduced walking speed, low physical activity, and reported fatigue, with the exception of weight loss. In the regression analysis, different frailty components were associated with quality of life, but all had a negative relationship. CONCLUSION: Self-reported frailty has a negative relationship with quality of life, that is, the increase in the frailty scale implies a reduction of different magnitudes in the quality of life of older adults.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between the experiences of sexuality and quality of life in older adults. METHOD: Cross-sectional study developed with a total of 300 older adults living in northeastern Brazil. Data collection was carried out entirely online between August and October 2020. Participants completed the online questionnaire containing three instruments for assessing bio sociodemographic data, sexuality and quality of life. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman correlation and multivariate linear regression tests, adopting a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Older adults experience better affective relationships and have better quality of life in sensory abilities and intimacy. In the regression analysis, only affective relationships (ß = 0.510; [95% CI: 0.340-0.682]; p < 0.001) and physical and social adversities (ß = -0.180; [95% CI:-1.443-0.434]; p < 0.001) remained associated with the general quality of life of older adults. CONCLUSION: Health professionals must invest in training, development of individual and group educational interventions, in addition to promoting the strengthening of bonds between older adults so that they feel free and comfort in expressing their intimate needs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the association between common mental disorder and quality of life in older adults. METHOD: cross-sectional study developed with a total of 721 Brazilian older adults between July and October 2020. Participants completed three instruments to assess bio sociodemographic, mental health and quality of life data. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H, Chi-square, Pearson correlation and multivariate linear regression tests, considering a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05) for all analyses. RESULTS: among the four components that assess common mental disorder, only three remained associated with negative coefficients with the participants' general quality of life: depressive-anxious mood (ß = -2.050; [CI95% = -2.962 - -1.137]; p < 0.001); decrease in vital energy (ß = -1.460; [CI95% = -2.197 - -0.723]; p < 0.001) and depressive thoughts (ß = -4.124; [CI95% = -5.211- -3.038]; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: most components that assess common mental disorders are negatively associated with quality of life, that is, the increase in these disorders resulted in a reduction in the quality of life of older adults.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the effects of sexuality on frailty and quality of life in the elderly. METHODS: a sectional study conducted with 662 elderly people between July and October 2020. Four self-administered instruments were used to collect bio-sociodemographic variables, sexuality, frailty and quality of life. Correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were performed. RESULTS: among the dimensions that assess sexuality, sexual intercourse had a weak, positive effect on quality of life (SC: 0.134, 95%CI: 0.153 - 0.254, p = 0.027), while affective relationships had a strong, positive effect (SC: 0.556, 95%CI: 0.442 - 0.670, p < 0.001). Frailty was only significantly related to a weak to moderate negative effect with sexual intercourse (SC: -0.216, 95%CI: -0.385 - -0.047, p = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS: two dimensions of sexuality, Sexual intercourse and Affective relationships, were found to have an effect on the quality of life and frailty of the elderly people investigated.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the correlation between family functionality and the quality of life of the elderly. METHOD: Sectional and correlational study conducted with 692 Brazilian elderly between July and October 2020. The elderly filled three instruments: biosociodemographic, family APGAR and WHOQOL-Old. The tests Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson correlation, and linear regression analyzed the data. The study considered a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05) for all analyses. RESULTS: The elderly with mild and severe family dysfunction presented worse quality of life when compared to the elderly with a functional family. All facets of quality of life correlated positively with family functionality. CONCLUSION: Family functionality is positively correlated with the quality of life of the elderly, therefore requiring the inclusion of the family in health care plans to identify potential family stressors early and plan interventions to solve the problems raised.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the relaxation technique with guided imagery by means of virtual reality on health-related quality of life in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. METHODS: A quasi-experiment conducted in a Bone Marrow Transplantation Service of a public hospital in southern Brazil. From October 2019 to October 2020, forty-two adult participants who underwent transplantation were included, 35 in the intervention group and seven in the control group. A guided imagery intervention, with audio guiding the relaxation associated with nature images in 360º, was performed during the hospitalization period. Data were collected on the first day of hospitalization, on the transplantation day, during the neutropenia stage, and at pre-hospital discharge. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Bone Marrow Transplantation (FACT-BMT), Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-Fatigue) and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Neutropenia (FACT-N) were used to assess health-related quality of life, fatigue and neutropenia. Data were analyzed using the Generalized Linear Mixed Model for the evolution of the health-related quality of life assessments over time, considering the groups and stages. Pearson's correlation coefficient was adopted for the correlation analyses. RESULTS: Allogeneic transplantation was predominant: 28 (80%) in the intervention group and 5 (71.43%) in the control group. There were improvements in the health-related quality of life scores, although not significant. A significant difference was found among the stages (p <0.050) and a significant positive correlation (p <0.000) among the variables on general quality of life, additional concerns, fatigue and neutropenia in all stages. CONCLUSION: Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation suffer changes in their quality of life. Interventions based on integrative practices emerge as an option to minimize them.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to analyze, in the literature, evidence about the benefits of the integrative and complementary practice of Qigong with regard to the health of adults and the elderly. METHOD: a systematic review by searching for studies in the PubMed, CINAHL, LILACS, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases. Randomized and non-randomized clinical trials were included; in Portuguese, English and Spanish; from 2008 to 2018. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses strategy was adopted, as well as the recommendation of the Cochrane Collaboration for assessing the risk of bias in the clinical trials analyzed. RESULTS: 28 studies were selected that indicated the benefit of the practice to the target audience, which can be used for numerous health conditions, such as: cancer; fibromyalgia; Parkinson's disease; Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; Burnout; stress; social isolation; chronic low back pain; cervical pain; buzz; osteoarthritis; fatigue; depression; and cardiovascular diseases. However, there was a great risk of bias in terms of the blinding of the research studies. CONCLUSION: the practice of Qigong produces positive results on health, mainly in the medium and long term. This study contributes to the advancement in the use of integrative and complementary practices in nursing, since it brings together the scientific production in the area from the best research results available.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate surgical-oncologic patients' quality of sleep through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. It is an exploratory study with transversal-observational design, in 46 postoperative head & neck and urology cancer patients. The PSQI questionnaire was used to evaluate the subjective quality of sleep and the occurrence of sleep disorders. Six PSQI components were statistically significant and 78.3% of the interviewees had impaired subjective quality of sleep. Among factors leading to sleep disorders we point out: taking too long to fall asleep; waking up in the middle of the night; getting up to go to the bathroom and napping during the day. This study is expected to sensitize the nursing team regarding the need to investigate quality of sleep and causes of its disorders in cancer survivors for an effective course of action.

RESUMO

This descriptive and cross-sectional study aimed to assess the Quality of Life (QoL) of cancer patients who were receiving chemotherapy. The instrument European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer--Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) was used for data collection. The sample consisted of 30 patients who signed the informed consent term. Data were analyzed in SPSS software. The QLQ-C30 showed that, for physical, cognitive and social functions, and role performance mean scores ranged from 71.26 to 75.12, demonstrating a satisfactory level. In the emotional function, the mean score was low (55.46). On the symptoms scales, there were a predominance of insomnia, with a mean score of 34.44, followed by pain 23.33 and fatigue 22.31. The QoL was satisfactory in all domains except for the emotional function, which scored low demonstrating that the collateral effects of chemotherapy exert a negative influence on patients' quality of life.
