RESUMO

Fish products in Slovakia have been heavily infected with Anisakis spp. larvae, which causes human anisakiasis. We found larvae in all tested samples of frozen Atlantic herring. Anisakid allergen t-Ani s7 testing revealed 2 positive cases in humans, signaling need for health authorities to closely monitor zoonotic marine parasites, even in inland areas.

Studies on parasite biogeography and host spectrum provide insights into the processes driving parasite diversification. Global geographical distribution and a multi-host spectrum make the tapeworm Ligula intestinalis a promising model for studying both the vicariant and ecological modes of speciation in parasites. To understand the relative importance of host association and biogeography in the evolutionary history of this tapeworm, we analysed mtDNA and reduced-represented genomic SNP data for a total of 139 specimens collected from 18 fish-host genera across a distribution range representing 21 countries. Our results strongly supported the existence of at least 10 evolutionary lineages and estimated the deepest divergence at approximately 4.99-5.05 Mya, which is much younger than the diversification of the fish host genera and orders. Historical biogeography analyses revealed that the ancestor of the parasite diversified following multiple vicariance events and was widespread throughout the Palearctic, Afrotropical, and Nearctic between the late Miocene and early Pliocene. Cyprinoids were inferred as the ancestral hosts for the parasite. Later, from the late Pliocene to Pleistocene, new lineages emerged following a series of biogeographic dispersal and host-switching events. Although only a few of the current Ligula lineages show narrow host-specificity (to a single host genus), almost no host genera, even those that live in sympatry, overlapped between different Ligula lineages. Our analyses uncovered the impact of historical distribution shifts on host switching and the evolution of host specificity without parallel host-parasite co-speciation. Historical biogeography reconstructions also found that the parasite colonized several areas (Afrotropical and Australasian) much earlier than was suggested by only recent faunistic data.

The tapeworms of fishes (Chondrichthyes and Actinopterygii) account one-third (1670 from around 5000) of the total tapeworm (Platyhelminthes: Cestoda) species diversity. In total 1186 species from 9 orders occur as adults in elasmobranchs (sharks, rays and chimaeras), and 484 species from 8 orders mature in ray-finned fishes (referred to here as teleosts). Teleost tapeworms are dominated by freshwater species (78%), but only 3% of elasmobranch tapeworms are known from freshwater rays of South America and Asia (Borneo). In the last 2 decades, vast progress has been made in understanding species diversity, host associations and interrelationships among fish tapeworms. In total, 172 new species have been described since 2017 (149 from elasmobranchs and 23 from teleosts; invalidly described taxa are not included, especially those from the Oriental region). Molecular data, however, largely limited to a few molecular markers (mainly 28S rDNA, but also 18S and cox1), are available for about 40% of fish tapeworm species. They allowed us to significantly improve our understanding of their interrelationships, including proposals of a new, more natural classification at the higher-taxonomy level (orders and families) as well as at the lower-taxonomy level (genera). In this review, we summarize the main advances and provide perspectives for future research.

RESUMO

Fish (Elasmobranchia and Actinopterygii) inhabit the majority of aquatic habitats globally. They are crucial for human nutrition but they may be negatively affected by parasitic protists and metazoan parasites. Fish parasites are also an extraordinary group of animals because of their ecological and evolutionary importance and unique adaptations to parasitism. They also play a key role in ecosystem functioning. In the present special issue, 13 review and research articles on major groups of fish parasites are provided to document the current advancement in our understanding of different aspects of their biology, ecology and associations with their fish hosts. The existing gaps in our knowledge of these peculiar animals are mapped and future trends in their research outlined.

Sparganosis is a relatively neglected foodborne and waterborne disease caused by species of the tapeworm genus Spirometra, the global distribution of which has not been sufficiently recognized. Known mainly as a zoonosis of East Asia, its species are native to all inhabited continents including Europe. Spirometra has been reported from numerous wildlife species from 17 European countries, and a critical review confirmed 17 autochthonous and 8 imported human clinical cases. We present the first molecular evidence of the coincident presence of 2 species in Europe and review the current distribution to raise awareness of the parasite in this region. Spirometra erinaceieuropaei is restricted to Europe and Spirometra mansoni represents a lineage distributed mainly across Asia and Oceania that reaches Europe. The parasite is common in Eastern Europe and its distribution has potential to expand along with its invasive or migrating mammal hosts, spreading the risks of human infection.

Monozoic tapeworms (Caryophyllidea) are dominant components of parasite communities of suckers (Catostomidae) in North America, with Biacetabulum Hunter, 1927 representing one of the more species-rich genera. Molecular (28S rDNA) and morphological (including scanning electron microscopy and histology) evaluation of newly collected tapeworms from different fish hosts revealed the existence of four similar (and three closely related) species of Biacetabulum. These four species differ from their congeners by having a long body (up to 48 mm long) with a very long, slender neck (its length represents ≥30% of total body length), a large, globular scolex with a prominent central acetabulum-like loculus on the dorsal and ventral sides, two pairs of shallow lateral loculi and a distinct, slightly convex apical disc, and a cirrus-sac that is situated between the anterior arms of the ovarian wings. Taken together, the morphological and molecular data and the host associations of these species provide evidence of their host specificity. Biacetabulum isaureae n. sp. occurs in notch clip redhorse, Moxostoma collapsum, in South Carolina (USA), B. longicollum n. sp. in silver redhorse, Moxostoma anisurum (type host), and golden redhorse, M. erythrurum, in Manitoba (Canada) and West Virginia (USA), B. overstreeti n. sp. in a spotted sucker, Minytrema melanops, in Mississippi, and B. hypentelii n. sp. in northern hogsucker, Hypentelium nigricans, in Tennessee (USA). The new species differ from each other in the number of postovarian vitelline follicles, the posterior extent of preovarian vitelline follicles and relative size of the cirrus sac.

Larvae (metacestodes) of gryporhynchid tapeworms (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) are reported for the first time from the liver of tilapia hybrids (Oreochromis aureus × O. niloticus) reared in earth ponds in northeastern Israel (along the Jordan River). This is the first record of Amirthalingamia macracantha (Joyeux & Baer, 1935), a parasite of cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), outside Africa and outside the tropics. Larvae found in the liver of tilapias (Cichlidae) were identified to species level because they possessed 20 massive rostellar hooks of 3 types, with the 4 largest hooks measuring almost 500 µm. Molecular data confirmed species identification. The possible route of introduction to Israel of this African parasite, which is large (length up to 2 cm) and potentially pathogenic for cultivated tilapias, is discussed.

Tapeworms (Cestoda) represents a species rich (about 5000 species) group of flatworms (Neodermata) parasitizing all groups of vertebrates including humans, with about 1000 species parasitizing elasmobranchs and almost 500 occurring in teleosts as adults. They are common parasites of cultured fish, both as adults and larvae (metacestodes), but only few adult tapeworms are actually pathogenic for their fish hosts. In contrast, cestode larvae can be harmful for fish, especially plerocercoids migrating throughout their tissue and internal organs. Current knowledge of host-parasite relationships, including immune response of fish infected with tapeworms, is still insufficient to enable adequate control of cestodoses, and most data available were obtained several decades ago. Treatment of fish infected with adult tapeworms is effective, especially with praziquantel, whereas the treatment of metacestodes is problematic. Control measures include interruption of the complex life cycle and prevention of transport of uninspected fish to new region.

A new genus, Megancestus n. gen., is proposed to accommodate the caryophyllidean tapeworm Biacetabulum carpiodi Mackiewicz, 1969 from carpsuckers and quillback (Carpiodes spp.) in North America. This species is not closely related to other species of Biacetabulum Hunter, 1927 and is transferred to a newly erected genus. This new genus is typified by the possession of a small body (total length of 3.1-7.5 mm) with a scolex that bears a pair of large acetabulum-like loculi, two pairs of shallow lateral loculi, and a slightly convex apical disc, testes arranged in one or two layers, oval, thick-walled cirrus-sac, well-developed external seminal vesicle, separate gonopores, H-shaped ovary, few median vitelline follicles, and the uterus extending by a single loop anterior to the cirrus-sac. Megancestus differs from all Nearctic caryophyllidean genera (family Capingentidae), including Biacetabulum, by vitelline follicles dorsal to the ovary that connect the preovarian and postovarian vitelline fields. The most closely related Hunterella Mackiewicz et McCrae, 1962 differs by shape of the scolex (tholate, i.e., devoid of any loculi), dumbbell-shaped ovary and the uterus not extending anterior to the cirrus-sac. Megancestus carpiodi (Mackiewicz, 1969) n. comb. is the only species of the genus and it is a stenoxenous parasite, which has been found only in the river carpsucker (Carpiodes carpio-type host), quillback (Carpiodes cyprinus) and highfin carpsucker (Carpiodes velifer) (Catostomidae: Ictiobinae) in the lower and middle Mississippi basin.

A new species of Crassicutis Manter, 1936 (Digenea: Megaperidae) is described from the intestine of Satanoperca jurupari (Cichlidae) in the Amazon River basin, Brazil. The genus Crassicutis currently contains eight species. Crassicutis manteri n. sp. is morphologically very similar to Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936, a parasite of cichlids reported from Mexico, the Antilles, and Central and South America. Molecular data revealed that C. cichlasomae represents a species complex in Middle American cichlids. The new species can be readily distinguished from C. cichlasomae sensu lato, and the other congeners, by a combination of morphological traits such as a narrow, elongate mouth opening (versus spherical in other species), the tandem position of testes (symmetrical or oblique in most congeners), narrow body widening towards its posterior end (versus widely oval, leaf-like in other species), and short intestinal caeca ending close to the posterior end of the posterior testis (versus reaching more posteriorly in other species). Six novel sequences of 28S rDNA, ITS1, and cox1 were generated for two isolates of the new species. Sequences of the 28S rRNA gene were used to corroborate that Crassicutis is sister taxa of Homalometron Stafford, 1904. Mitochondrial DNA corroborated the distinction of the new species with previously sequenced congeners in Middle American cichlids; the interspecific divergence between the new species and the genetic lineages of C. cichlasomae was very high, varying between 23.7 and 27.2%. Biogeographical implications of our findings are briefly discussed including questionable validity of records of C. cichlasomae from South America.

Tapeworms (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) are the dominant component of communities of intestinal parasites in pimelodid and other catfishes (Siluriformes) from South America. Even though these parasites have been studied intensively over more than one century, molecular taxonomy and phylogenetics have questioned their morphology-based classification, thus raising doubts about the systematic value of traits commonly used to circumscribe individual taxa. In the present study, members of three morphologically well-characterized genera of proteocephalids from pimelodid (Hemisorubim platyrhynchos and Sorubim lima) and auchenipterid (Ageneiosus inermis) catfishes from the Paraná or Amazon River basins were subjected to DNA sequencing of the large subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA (lsrDNA) and complete mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). Phylogenetic analyses revealed the sister relationship between Manaosia bracodemoca and Mariauxiella piscatorum, and among Mariauxiella pimelodi and Ageneiella brevifilis. As a result, Mar. piscatorum and A. brevifilis are transferred to Manaosia and Mariauxiella, respectively, as Manaosia piscatorum n. comb. and Mariauxiella brevifilis n. comb., and the genus Ageneiella is suppressed. Diagnoses of Manaosia and Mariauxiella are amended. In addition, the present study revealed misidentification of tapeworms whose sequences are deposited in the GenBank database.

Tapeworms (Cestoda) of the Proteocephalus-species aggregate from cyprinoids, pike, eel, smelt and cavefish in the Nearctic region (North America) are reviewed, based on a critical examination of newly collected and museum specimens. For some species neither new nor museum specimens were available and only literature data were used for these taxa. Two species occur in North American cyprinoids: (i) Nearctic Proteocephalus buplanensis Mayes, 1976 in Semotilus atromaculatus (Mitchill) in the upper Mississippi River and Hudson Bay drainage basins, and (ii) Holarctic P. torulosus (Batsch, 1786) (syns. P. ptychocheilus Faust, 1919; P. cobraeformis Haderlie, 1953; and Ophiotaenia critica Mpoame & Landers, 1981, new synonym), which occurs in Ptychocheilus spp. and other leuciscids in the western part of North America. Proteocephalus pinguis La Rue, 1911 is a specific parasite of pike (Esox spp.), which is briefly redescribed here to establish its diagnostic morphological characteristics because the original description was based on a mixture of at least two species. In addition to P. pinguis, pike serve as postyclic hosts of several species of the Proteocephalus-aggregate typical of other fish, such as bass, perch and whitefish, namely P. fluviatilis Bangham, 1925, P. pearsei La Rue, 1919 and P. longicollis (Zeder, 1800). Cavefish (Amblyopsidae) in North America harbour two endemic species, P. chologasteri Whittaker & Hill, 1968 from Chologaster agassizii Putman and P. poulsoni Whittaker & Zober, 1978 from Amblyopsis spelaea DeKay, which have never been found since their original description and their validity should be confirmed based on new collections and molecular data. Two other species of the Proteocephalus-aggregate, P. macrocephalus (Creplin, 1825), a parasite of eels (Anguilla spp.), and P. tetrastomus (Rudolphi, 1810) from smelt (Osmeridae), have circumboreal (Holarctic) distribution. Molecular data are available only for three of the seven species treated herein, but they do not form a monophyletic group.

The proteocephalid genus Pseudoendorchis (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) has recently been proposed to accommodate seven species/species-level lineages of tapeworm parasites of catfishes (Siluriformes) in the Neotropical region, based on integration of genetic information, and morphological and ecological data. Its members are typified by having a large Mehlis' gland, representing more than 1/5 (usually 1/4-1/2) of proglottid width, and the vagina always anterior to the cirrus-sac. Critical examination of previously unstudied museum cestodes tentatively designated as Pseudoendorchis sp. 3 from Megalonema platycephalum (Pimelodidae) in the Peruvian Amazon made it possible to formally describe this taxon and to differentiate it from all congeneric species. The new species, which is the first parasite of M. platycephalum ever recorded, is characterised mainly by having the scolex bearing four uniloculate suckers (biloculate in all nominal species of the genus), the lowest relative surface of the ovary (ratio of its surface to that of the whole proglottid) among species of the genus (< 9% versus > 11%, usually 15-20%), and an extraordinarily large Mehlis' gland (its diameter represents 41-50% of proglottid width). Morphology of the terminal portion of the vaginal canals in proteocephalids is briefly discussed.

Ameloblastella martinae n. sp. is described from the gills of the pimelodid catfishes (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) Sorubim lima (Bloch & Schneider) (type-host) and Hemisorubim platyrhynchos (Valenciennes) in the Peruvian Amazonia, and on Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix & Agassiz) and P. recticulatum Eigenmann & Eigenmann in Argentina. The new species is distinguished from other congeners mainly by the morphology of the male copulatory organ (MCO), which has a form of a corkscrew with tight rings, whereas in other species of Ameloblastella Kritsky, Mendoza-Franco & Scholz, 2000, the MCO is formed by a delicate and coiled tube forming loose rings. Sclerotised structures (haptoral elements and MCO) of specimens of A. martinae n. sp. were used to compare two parasite populations (from Peru and Argentina) using Euclidean distances. Despite the geographical isolation and different host-associations, both populations belong to the same species. The phylogenetic position of A. martinae n. sp. was analysed using partial sequences of the 28S rDNA gene along with 46 species of dactylogyrid parasites of siluriforms (Siluriformes) under Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian Inference (BI) criteria. Phylogenetic reconstructions showed that Ameloblastella represented by five species, including its type-species A. chavarriai (Price, 1936) from the heptapterid Rhamdia guatemalensis and A. martinae n. sp., was recovered as a well-supported monophyletic group (in both analyses, ML and BI). An additional species, Ameloblastella sp., was found on P. corruscans and P. reticulatum in Argentina. The morphology of the MCO and haptoral elements suggests that Ameloblastella sp. may represent a new species. However, the few specimens found and the lack of genetic sequences of this species precluded its formal description.

Diphyllobothriosis is a reemerging zoonotic disease because of global trade and increased popularity of eating raw fish. We present molecular evidence of host switching of a human-infecting broad fish tapeworm, Dibothriocephalus latus, and use of salmonids as intermediate or paratenic hosts and thus a source of human infection in South America.

A morphological and molecular phylogenetic study of proteocephalid tapeworms of the genus Acanthotaenia von Linstow, 1903, parasites of monitors (Varanidae), was carried out. The type species, A. shipleyi von Linstow, 1903, which was originally described based on an immature specimen from Sri Lanka, is redescribed based on new material from the type host, Varanus salvator, in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Vietnam, and its neotype is designated. In addition, Acanthotaenia susanae n. sp. is described from Varanus nebulosus in Vietnam. The new species differs from congeners by the large size of the scolex, width of the rostellum and the number of testes. New molecular data (sequences of lsrDNA and cox1) revealed Acanthotaenia paraphyletic with the inclusion of Australotaenia bunthangi de Chambrier & Scholz, 2012, a parasite of Enhydris enhydris (Ophidia: Homalopsidae) in Cambodia. Molecular data confirm a wide distribution of A. shipleyi (isolates from Malaysia and Vietnam were almost identical) and indicate a strict host specificity (oioxeny) of individual species of the genus. Type specimens of four species made it possible to supplement their morphological descriptions. A survey of all species of Acanthotaenia recognised as valid is presented and the following taxonomic changes are proposed: Acanthotaenia pythonis Wahid, 1968 described from the green python, Morelia viridis, in a zoo, is transferred to Kapsulotaenia as Kapsulotaenia pythonis (Wahid, 1968) n. comb., because it possesses intrauterine eggs grouped in capsules. Acanthotaenia gracilis (Beddard, 1913) from Varanus varius in Australia is considered to be species inquirenda because its original descriptions did not contain sufficient data for adequate circumscription and differentiation from congeners and type material was not available. Generic diagnosis of Acanthotaenia is amended and a key to its seven species is provided.

Based on morphological evaluation of type-specimens and new material collected in three species of monitor lizards (Squamata: Varanidae), the diagnosis of the monotypic Rostellotaenia Freze, 1963 (Proteocephalidae: 'Acanthotaeniinae') is amended. The genus differs from Acanthotaenia von Linstow, 1903, with which it was previously synonymised, by the shape of the scolex with a wide, dome-shaped rostellum, the posterior extent of the uterus, which does not overpass the ovarian isthmus posteriorly, well-developed retractor muscles connecting the rostellum with the neck region, absence of a well-developed, ring-like vaginal sphincter, shorter and wider proglottides, and geographical distribution (Ethiopian region only). The type- and only species, R. nilotica (Beddard, 1913), is redescribed and two new definitive hosts, Varanus albigularis Daudin and V. exanthematicus (Bosc), are reported. Host specificity of R. nilotica, which exhibits remarkable morphological variability, is stenoxenous, i.e. it occurs in several congeneric species of African monitor lizards, unlike species of Acanthotaenia, which are strictly specific (oioxenous).

On the basis of morphological and molecular data, Walteriella n. g. is proposed to accommodate the dactylogyrid parasites Walteriella conica n. sp. (type-species) from the gills of Platynematichthys notatus (Jardine) (type-host) and Brachyplatystoma juruense (Boulenger), and Walteriella ophiocirrus n. sp. from the gills of Platystomatichthys sturio (Kner) (type-host), all fish host belonging to the Pimelodidae collected in the Peruvian Amazonia. Species of the new genus are distinguished from other dactylogyrids infecting Neotropical catfishes by the presence of a folded germarium, a male copulatory organ basally articulated to the accessory piece, a cone-shaped seminal receptacle, and ventral and dorsal bars with projections directed anteriorly. Both species of the new genus form a strongly supported lineage closely related to Dactylogyridae gen. sp. 13, a parasite of Hypophthalmus edentatus Spix & Agassiz (Pimelodidae) in an analysis of partial sequences of the 28S rRNA gene. The clade formed by species of Walteriella n. g. and Dactylogyridae gen. sp. 13 is closely related to other dactylogyrids infecting pimelodid catfishes. Based on the morphology of its haptoral elements and copulatory complex, the species Dactylogyridae gen. sp. 13 is morphologically different from species of Walteriella n. g., but its generic assignment is still unclear.

Two new genera and three new species of paramphistomoid digeneans are described in the family Cladorchiidae Fischoeder, 1901 from doradid, heptapterid, pimelodid and pseudopimelodid fishes in the Amazon River in Peru. Goeldamphistomum amazonum n. g., n. sp. (type-species) from Goeldiella eques (Müller & Troschel) (type-host) and Tenellus trimaculatus (Boulenger), and Goeldamphistomum peruanum n. g., n. sp. from Duopalatinus peruanus Eigenmann & Allen (type-host), Calophysus macropterus (Lichtenstein) and Microglanis sp. are placed in the Dadayiinae Fukui, 1929. Both species have an accessory acetabular sucker, which distinguishes the genus from all taxa previously reported from South American freshwater fishes. They differ from each other primarily in that G. amazonum has a prebifurcal genital pore and oblique, separated testes, the levels of which rarely overlap longitudinally, whereas G. peruanum has a postbifurcal genital pore and testes directly to obliquely tandem. Iquitostrema papillatum n. g., n. sp. (Kalitrematinae Travassos, 1933) from the intestine of Hassar orestis (Steindachner) differs from other members of the subfamily in the combination of a massive acetabulum with a papillate luminal surface and symmetrical testes which overlie the caeca close to the caecal arch. These are the first records of paramphistomes from the five host species studied here.
