RESUMO

A total of 300 pigs (241 × 600; DNA, Columbus, NE; initially 6.0 ±â€…0.01 kg) were used in a 42-d trial to determine the effects of vitamin E levels and partially replacing vitamin E with a polyphenol (Cabanin CSD, R2 Argo, Denmark) on growth performance, complete blood count, serum thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and cytokine panel. Sixty pens of pigs were weighed and allotted to one of the five dietary treatments in a completely randomized design with 12 pens per treatment. A control treatment was formulated to provide 15 IU/kg of vitamin E equivalence from vitamin E. This control treatment was then used as a base for three replacement strategy diets to determine the effects of replacing an additional 60 IU/kg of vitamin E with polyphenol in diets containing a basal level of vitamin E requirement estimate (15 IU/kg). First, an additional 60 IU/kg of vitamin E was added for a total of 75 IU/kg of vitamin E equivalence. Second, 50% of the additional vitamin E (30 IU/kg) was replaced with the equivalency of polyphenol. Third, all 60 IU/kg of the additional vitamin E was replaced with the equivalency of polyphenol. To evaluate whether there are negative effects of feeding nursery pigs a high level of polyphenol, a fifth treatment was formulated to provide 575 IU/kg of vitamin E equivalence with 75 IU/kg from vitamin E and 500 IU/kg from polyphenol. Whole blood and serum samples were collected on days 10 and 42, and pig weights and feed disappearance were measured on days 10, 21, 31, 38, and 42. For growth performance, increasing vitamin E equivalence tended to improve (quadratic, P < 0.10) gain-to-feed ratio (G:F) from days 10 to 21, and tended to improve (linear, P < 0.10) G:F from days 21 to 42 and 0 to 42. There was a vitamin E equivalence × day interaction (P = 0.050) for serum SOD activity. Increasing vitamin E equivalence increased (linear, P < 0.05) serum SOD activity on day 42 but not on days 10 (P > 0.10). For serum cytokines, there was no evidence of differences (P > 0.10) between treatments and vitamin E equivalence. Moreover, there was no evidence of differences (P > 0.10) in all response variables between the three replacement strategies throughout the entire periods. In summary, increasing vitamin E equivalence tended to improve G:F, which may be related to the improved SOD activity. Furthermore, polyphenol can effectively replace vitamin E provided above the vitamin E requirement to provide similar benefits from increasing vitamin E equivalence.

RESUMO

Viruses of veterinary significance are known to survive for extended periods in plant-based feed ingredients imported into North America. To reduce the likelihood of virus introduction, high-risk ingredients, such as oil seed meals, are stored in designated facilities for extended periods under controlled environmental conditions to minimize viral infectivity prior to use in diets. While 30 days has become a standard storage period, the required ambient temperature to inactivate viruses during this time is not known. To address the question, 1-metric tonne totes of conventional soybean meal were inoculated with PRRSV 144 lineage 1C variant and SVA prior to storage for 30 days at 23.9°C, 15.5°C or 10°C, and feeding to pigs. Virus infectivity was evaluated through detection of viral RNA in oral fluid samples, along with clinical signs. Results indicated that inactivation of both viruses occurred in soy stored at 23.9°C. In contrast, SVA infectivity was observed in soy stored at both 15.5°C and 10°C, while PRRSV 144 L1C variant infectivity was only observed in soy stored at 10°C. These results suggest that a storage period of 30 days and a temperature of 23.9°C may assist in the reduction of the risk of virus contaminated plant-based feed ingredients, such as soybean meal.

RESUMO

The hypothesis that feed ingredients could serve as vehicles for the transport and transmission of viral pathogens was first validated under laboratory conditions. To bridge the gap from the laboratory to the field, this current project tested whether three significant viruses of swine could survive in feed ingredients during long-distance commercial transport across the continental US. One-metric tonne totes of soybean meal (organic and conventional) and complete feed were spiked with a 10 ml mixture of PRRSV 174, PEDV and SVA and transported for 23 days in a commercial semi-trailer truck, crossing 29 states, and 10,183 km. Samples were tested for the presence of viral RNA by PCR, and for viable virus in soy-based samples by swine bioassay and in complete feed samples by natural feeding. Viable PRRSV, PEDV and SVA were detected in both soy products and viable PEDV and SVA in complete feed. These results provide the first evidence that viral pathogens of pigs can survive in representative volumes of feed and feed ingredients during long-distance commercial transport across the continental United States.

RESUMO

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a member of the nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDVs) and is stable in a variety of environments, including animal feed ingredients as shown in previous laboratory experiments and simulations. Emiliania huxleyi virus (EhV) is another member of the NCLDVs, which has a restricted host range limited to a species of marine algae called Emiliania huxleyi. This algal NCLDV has many similar morphological and physical characteristics to ASFV thereby making it a safe surrogate, with results that are applicable to ASFV and suitable for use in real-world experiments. Here we inoculated conventional soybean meal (SBMC), organic soybean meal (SBMO), and swine complete feed (CF) matrices with EhV strain 86 (EhV-86) at a concentration of 6.6 × 107 virus g-1, and then transported these samples in the trailer of a commercial transport vehicle for 23 days across 10,183 km covering 29 states in various regions of the United States. Upon return, samples were evaluated for virus presence and viability using a previously validated viability qPCR (V-qPCR) method. Results showed that EhV-86 was detected in all matrices and no degradation in EhV-86 viability was observed after the 23-day transportation event. Additionally, sampling sensitivity (we recorded unexpected increases, as high as 49% in one matrix, when virus was recovered at the end of the sampling period) rather than virus degradation best explains the variation of virus quantity observed after the 23-day transport simulation. These results demonstrate for the first time that ASFV-like NCLDVs can retain viability in swine feed matrices during long-term transport across the continental United States.

RESUMO

In 2014, the hypothesis that feed ingredients could serve as vehicles for the transport and transmission of viral pathogens was proposed and evaluated by multiple investigators under laboratory conditions. In an attempt to validate these data, we used a demonstration project to test whether three significant viruses of swine could survive in feed ingredients under real-world shipping conditions. Samples of soya bean meal (organic and conventional), lysine, choline and vitamin A were spiked with a mixture of PRRSV 174, PEDV and SVA and transported for 21 days in the trailer of a commercial transport vehicle, encompassing 14 states and 9,741 km. Samples were tested for viral genome and viability at the end of the transit period. Regarding viability, PRRSV, PEDV and SVA were all detected as infectious in bioassays following inoculation with both soy products. In addition, viable PRRSV and SVA were detected by bioassay pigs inoculated with samples of vitamin A, and infectious SVA was detected in pigs inoculated with samples of lysine and choline. These results provide further evidence that select viral pathogens of pigs can survive in certain feed ingredients during commercial transit.

RESUMO

Thelaziasis is an ocular arthropod-borne, zoonotic disease of the eye infecting the conjunctival sac, lacrimal duct, and lacrimal gland caused by a nematode of the genus Thelazia. We report the first case of human ocular thelaziasis in Nepal in a 6-month-old child from a Rukum district, Nepal. The infant presented with conjunctivitis, and his visual acuity and dilated fundal examination were normal. A total of 6 worms were removed for identification. Collected nematodes were identified based on morphological keys as Thelazia callipaeda. The patient's symptoms improved after removal of the nematodes.

RESUMO

The currently used multistep chemical synthesis for making surfaces antimicrobial by attaching to them hydrophobic polycations is replaced herein by an aerosol-assisted plasma deposition procedure. To this end, N,N-hexyl,methyl-PEI (HMPEI) is directly plasma-coated onto a glass surface. The resultant immobilized HMPEI coating has been thoroughly characterized and shown to be robust, bactericidal against Escherichia coli, and virucidal against human influenza virus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Infections are a common and serious complication among patients with cirrhosis. We assessed the epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical consequences of bacterial infections in cirrhotic patients. METHODS: In this multicenter prospective study, all patients with cirrhosis of liver with different infections were analyzed. Infections were classified as community-acquired (CA), healthcare-associated (HCA), or hospital-acquired (HA). Site of infection and characteristics of bacteria were recorded; effect on liver function and 30-day survival were evaluated. RESULTS: One hundred and six out of 420 (25 %) patients with cirrhosis of liver had infection. Infection rate among indoor patients was 37.5 % (92/245) and among outdoor patients was 8 % (14/175). Out of 106 patients, CA, HCA, and HA were seen in 19.8 %, 50 %, and 30.2 %, respectively. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (31.1 %), urinary tract infections (22.6 %), and pneumonia and cellulitis (11.3 % each) were common infections. Gram-negative bacteria (54 %) were more common than Gram-positive cocci (46 %). Multidrug resistant (MDR) organisms were seen in 41.7 % of patients. Most of the MDR organisms were seen in HCA and HA patients. The degree of liver impairment was significantly more severe in patients with infection. Independent predictor of infection was high Child-Turcott-Pugh (CTP) class (p = 0.006, Child B vs. A (odds ratio (OR) 3.04 95 % CI = 1.63 to 5.68) and Child C vs. A (OR 4.17 95 % CI = 2.12 to 8.19). Overall in-hospital mortality was 7.6 %. Patients with infection had increased mortality at 30-day follow up compared to those without infection (23.5 % vs. 2.2 %; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Infections are one of the important causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis of liver. The most frequent infections are HCA and HA. Infection predisposes to deterioration of liver function and increases mortality. Cirrhotic patients should be monitored closely for infections especially those with Child class B and C.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Symptomatic skeletal disease in primary hyperparathyroidism is over 30 times more common in India compared to the west. The classical "brown tumour" is commonly seen with the major sites being ends of long bones, the pelvis and ribs. Facial involvement is rare and, when present, usually involves the mandible. CASE REPORT: We report a 68-year-old gentleman with a rare initial presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism with bilateral maxillary brown tumours. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Successful parathyroid surgery resulted in a regression in the tumours. The report highlights the need to consider primary hyperparathyroidism in the initial differential diagnosis of bony lesions of the jaw.

RESUMO

The pathways of cadmium species to form a submicrometer-sized aerosol in a combustion system exhaust were established. Cadmium oxide was the predominant species formed in the experiments and resulted in particles of a mean size of 26-63 nm with number concentrations in the range of 2-8 x 10(6) cm(-3). Two different nanostructured sorbents, a solid montmorillonite (MMT) and an in situ generated agglomerated silica, were used for capture of the cadmium species. The MMT sorbent was not stable at 1000 degrees C, and structural changes resulted. MMT did not suppress nucleation of cadmium species and partially captured it by weak physisorption as established by the leachability tests. In contrast, the in situ generated silica nanostructured agglomerates had a high surface area, suppressed nucleation of cadmium species vapors, and chemisorbed them effectively resulting in a firm binding, as compared to the MMT sorbent. There is an optimal temperature-time relationship at which the capture process is expected to be most effective. The leaching efficiency under these conditions was less than 3.2%. The nanostructured silica agglomerate size can be tuned for effective capture in existing particle control devices.
