RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE), is a pregnancy-specific complication with the placental origin which associated with altered expression of angiogenic factors. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), is a growth and hypoxia-induced factor which contributes to the regulation of various processes. The present study has investigated the association of the placental VEGF -634G/C (rs2010963), -1154G/A (rs1570360), and -2549 I/D (18bpindel) polymorphisms in the promoter region with VEGF mRNA expression in PE women and control group. METHODS: This case-control study was performed on the placenta of 84 PE women and 103 controls after delivery. Genotyping of the VEGF polymorphisms was done by PCR or PCR, PCR-RFLP or sequencing methods. The mRNA expression levels were measured by Quantitative Real-Time PCR. RESULTS: The relative mRNA expression of VEGF gene was significantly higher in PE women compared to controls. The relative mRNA expression of VEGF gene was significantly higher in women with -634CC genotype compared to CG + GG genotypes in PE women and total studied women but not in control women. However, there was no association between the placental VEGF -1154G/A and -2549 I/D polymorphisms and VEGF mRNA expression neither in PE nor in control groups. CONCLUSION: The current study found higher mRNA expression of placental VEGF gene in PE women. The mRNA expression of the placental VEGF gene has been up-regulated in the placenta of women with -634CC genotype. No association was found between the placental VEGF -1154G/A and -2549 I/D polymorphisms and VEGF mRNA expression.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a bilateral, chronic, external ocular inflammatory disorder that mainly affects patients in their first or second decade. This study was designed to compare tacrolimus and interferon alpha-2b (IFN alpha-2b) eye drops in the treatment of VKC. METHODS: In this randomized, double-masked clinical trial, 40 consecutive patients with VKC were sent to a referral eye hospital in a tropical region southeast of Iran. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either 0.005% tacrolimus or IFN alpha-2b (1,000,000 units/cc). Chi-square and t tests were used for comparison of outcomes between both groups. RESULTS: Mean ± SD age was 11.1 ± 5.2 years. Thirty-one patients (77.5%) were male. The mean duration of disease was 3.4 ± 2.9 years. In this study, the signs and symptoms were significantly reduced in patients after treatment in both groups (P = 0.0001). In the tacrolimus group, all patients responded to treatment whereas only one subject in the IFN group failed to respond (P = 0.99). Side effects in both groups were mild and tolerable. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that both 0.005% tacrolimus and IFN alpha-2b are effective and appear to be safe in treatment of recalcitrant VKC.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Occupational stress is a major factor in hindering the performance of nurses and midwives and developing physical and mental complications in them. Given that these two groups are in direct contact with patients more than other medical staff and stress management training can be effective in the reduction of occupational stress among the nurses and midwives. AIM: This study was set out to compare the effect of a PRECEDE-PROCEED based stress management training program on the occupational stress of the nurses and midwives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on the aforementioned nurses and midwives. Data collection instruments included the Nursing Stress Scale (NSS). The training program was held in two 4-hour-long sessions for three months from 1st January to 31st March 2013. RESULTS: The results showed a significant increase in the PRECEDE scores of both groups by the end of the program, as compared to the baseline. A significant decrease was also observed in the stress scores of both groups. There was no difference between groups in these regards. CONCLUSION: The PRECEDE-based stress management training is effective in the reduction of occupational stress among the nurses and midwives.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Stress reduction (MBSR) on perceived pain intensity and quality of life in patients with chronic headache. Thus, forty patients based on the diagnosis of a neurologist and diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS) for migraine and chronic tension-type headache were selected and randomly assigned to the intervention group and control group, respectively. The participants completed the Pain and quality of life (SF-36) questionnaire. The intervention group enrolled in an eight-week MBSR program that incorporated meditation and daily home practice, per week, session of 90-minutes. Results of covariance analysis with the elimination of the pre-test showed significantly improvement of pain and quality of life in the intervention group compared with the control group. The findings from this study revealed that MBSR can be used non-pharmacological intervention for improvement the quality of life and development of strategies to cope with pain in patients with chronic headache. And can be used in combination with other therapies such as pharmacotherapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Musculoskeletal disorders are of common problems among computer (PC) users. Training of posture reform plays a significant role in the prevention of the emergence, progression and complications of these diseases. The present research was performed to study the effect of the Internet training on the posture reform of the Internet users working in two Iranian universities including Sistan and Baluchestan University and Islamic Azad University of Zahedan in 2014. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study was a quasi-experimental intervention with control group and conducted in two Iranian universities including Sistan and Baluchestan University and Islamic Azad University of Zahedan. The study was done on 160 PC users in the two groups of intervention (80 people) and control (80 people). Training PowerPoint was sent to the intervention group through the Internet and a post test was given to them after 45 days. Statistical software of SPSS 19 and statistical tests of Kolmogrov, t-test, Fisher Exact test, and correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. RESULTS: After the training, the mean scores of knowledge, attitude, performance and self-efficacy in the intervention group were 24.21 ± 1.34, 38.36 ± 2.89, 7.59 ± 1.16, and 45.06 ± 4.11, respectively (P <0.001). The mean scores of knowledge in the intervention group 5.45±2.81 and in the control group 1.20 ± 1.07 showed a significant change. Mean scores of attitude in the intervention group 3.60 ± 3.59 and in the control group 0.48± 1.03 showed a significant change as well. Mean scores of self-efficacy in the intervention group 14.83 ± 4.67 and in the control group 0.88 ± 1.93 indicated a significant change and mean scores of performance in the intervention group 5.28 ± 1.24 and in the control group 0.62 ± 0.73 indicated a significant change (P <0.001). DISCUSSION: The results of the study showed that training through the Internet had a significant impact on the posture reform of the PC users. According to the findings observed, there was a significant relationship between the scores of self-efficacy-performance after training. Therefore, based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that Internet training to increase self-efficacy approach in the successive periods can be effective to reform the postures of PC users.
