RESUMO

Nine sarcophagid larvae were found on the right eyelid, cornea, and bulbar conjunctiva of a debilitated patient in a hospital in Osaka, Japan. Inflammation of the right eyelid and conjunctival congestion, probably initiated or aggravated by the larvae, were found. The larvae were removed and reared for accurate identification, and, on the basis of the characteristics of the 3rd instar and adult flies, the species was identified as Sarcophaga crassipalpis Macquart. This is a report of ophthalmomyiasis caused by this facultative parasite in a human. Patients with diminished consciousness in hospitals need protection from flies.

RESUMO

The resistant levels of houseflies to six kinds of insecticides: DDT, Pyrethrins, malathion, Sumithion, Baytex and DDVP, were examined on 15 strains collected in the Philippines. It was found that most housefly colonies in the Philippines showed higher susceptibility to those insecticides than the Takatsuki strains, especially to DDT. The range of LD50 values to malathion were between 1.775 microgram and 0.0975 microgram per fly. Among 15 strains collected in the Philippines, 7 showed higher LD50 values to malathion than the Takatsuki strain. These values mean that the houseflies in the Philippines are increasing their resistance to malathion.

RESUMO

A case of intestinal myiasis caused by larvae of Sarcophaga peregrina (Japanese name: senchi-nikubae) is reported. The patient passed stools containing live fly larvae for 2 days, but was otherwise asymptomatic. The patient seems to have been infested accidentally as a result of having eaten "yakitori" in which the fly had deposited its larvae. This paper is the first report of intestinal myiasis caused by the 3rd instar of this species.

RESUMO

Six cases of intestinal myiasis were diagnosed in Macao from January 1987 to August 1989, during a survey of intestinal parasites in inhabitants and on stool routine examination in hospitalized patients. The species of flies identified were Stomoxys calcitrans in 4 cases and Megalesia (Megalesia) insulana in 2 cases, M. insulana being a new record in mainland of China. During the survey of intestinal parasites 1889 human fecal samples were collected from Chinese inhabitants. 45 samples were collected on September 2 and 15 samples on September 11, 1987 in an aged home. Among them 4 samples were found to have some moving larvae, which were later identified morphologically as S. calcitrans. All these four cases were old ladies living in the aged home and they complained of mild diarrhea and abdominal pain. The fifth case was a patient with dermatosis, who had an eosinophil count of 18%. On stool examination, eggs of Clonorchis sinensis and larvae of flies were found. These larvae were cultured in food stuff containing wheat bran (100g), milk powder (18g) and water (200ml) at 30 degrees C. Within a week these larvae became pupa from which hatched adult flies identified as M. insulana which were known to be distributed in the Philippines and Hawaii but not found in the mainland of China before. 3 months later the stool from the patient was re-examined, about 200 larvae were counted in 5 ml of feces, the fly species being the same. The sixth patient was a pediatric case, again in his stool sample larvae of flies were found which were identified as M. insulana after culture. M. insulana is distributed in the Philippines, Hawaii, etc. Since a great amount of fruits was constantly imported from the Philippines and Hawaii, it remains to be confirmed whether M. insulana is imported into Macao through fruits.

RESUMO

Twenty species belonging to the genus Musca Linné are reported from Thailand with taxonomic key. This study is based on the specimens available in the authors' collection and 8 species are the new records from this country. The newly recorded species are Musca interrupta pilifacies, M. lucens, M. fasciata, M. pattoni, M. planiceps, M. xanthomelas, M. bezzii and M. convexifrons.

RESUMO

Flies from different geographical parts of Thailand were collected to study their medical importance as well as making a zoogeographical study. After examination, 32 species of 10 genera, Orthellia, Mitroplatia, Morellia, Pyrellia, Rypellia, Haematobia, Haematobosca, Stygeromyia, Haematostoma and Stomoxys, belonging to Muscidae were identified and these are reported in this paper. Some of these are newly recorded ones from this country. This study is based on the specimens available in the authors' collection.

RESUMO

The resistant level of the houseflies to the seven kinds of insecticides, Malathion, Sumithion, Baytex, Diazinon, DDVP, DDT and Chrysron, was examined on the 3 strains collected in Singapore. It was found that most housefly colonies in Singapore showed a higher susceptibility to those insecticides than that of the Takatsuki strain of Japan, especially to DDT. However, the resistant level to Malathion was remarkably higher than that of the Takatsuki strain. The synergists, piperonyl butoxide, Safroxane and S-421, mixed with Malathion were effective for lowering the resistant level of the Malathion-resistant strain.

RESUMO

The resistant levels of the 4 strains of the housefly collected in Borneo to six insecticides, namely DDT, Chrysron, DDVP, Baytex, Sumithion and Diazinon, were examined. It was found that most housefly population in Borneo showed a higher susceptibility than that of the Takatsuki strain of Japan, especially to DDT.

RESUMO

The resistant level of the houseflies to six kinds of insecticides, DDT, Resmethrin, DDVP, Baytex, Sumithion and Diazinon, was examined on the seven strains collected in Malaysia. It was found that their susceptibility is rather higher than that of the Takatsuki strain which is a standard strain in Japan. However, their susceptibility to Sumithion was the same or slightly lower than that of the Takatsuki strain. The resistant level to five of six kinds of insecticides was the highest in the strain of Cameron Highland. The values were close to Singh's data in 1973, and this means that the resistance of the houseflies to the insecticides is increasing in Malaysia.

RESUMO

A third-stage larva of Dryomyza formosa (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Dryomyzidae) was found in the fresh stool of a 27-year-old Japanese woman resident of Shiobara, 150 km north of Tokyo, on 16 November 1998. This is the first record of myiasis due to Dryomyza. Detection of this maggot (2cm long) by the patient herself was associated with her longstanding delusion of abdominal parasitosis as a symptom of chronic schizophrenia. Circumstantial evidence agreed with this being a genuine case of intestinal myiasis, apparently due to accidental ingestion of the insect, with no signs that the patient had contrived the report, nor that the maggot had invaded the stool post-defaecation. This case draws attention to the likelihood that some personality states are predisposed to noticing and reporting myiasis, when it occurs. We review other conditions (mental and physical) that are more prone to myiasis.
