Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), which constitute a new class of porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials, have gained considerable attention in the fields of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices owing to their open topological structures, large surface areas, tunable morphologies, and extreme redox activity. A synthesis protocol that comprises coprecipitation followed by controlled calcination processes to design a battery-type electrode is used. This electrode consists of three-dimensional (3D), ant cave-like polyhedrons of nickel-cobalt alloy on graphitic carbon (GC; NiCo@GC) nanostructures; trimesic acid is used as a potential MOF-linker. The developed NiCo@GC sample exhibits mesoporous characteristics with the maximum surface area of 94.08 m2 g-1 at 77 K. In addition, the redox activity at different sweep rates reveals the battery-type charge storage behavior of the NiCo@GC electrode; its three-electrode assembly provides 444 C g-1 specific capacity at 2 A g-1 with long-term capacity retention. The constructed supercapattery (SC) devices (i.e., AC//NiCo@GC) achieved capacity, specific energy, and specific power are 74.3 mAh g-1 , 39.5 Wh kg-1 , and 665 W kg-1 , respectively. Owing to its reasonable electrochemical characteristics, the prepared NiCo@GC material is a promising candidate for supercapattery electrodes for portable electronic devices.

A benzofuran glycinamide-based chemosensor, 3-(2-([4-fluorobenzyl]amino)acetamido)benzofuran-2-carboxamide (BGA) was developed and synthesized for the selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions. The photophysical properties of the probe BGA were studied using UV-visible light absorption and fluorescence spectrophotometers. The chemosensor BGA showed a marked 'on-off' fluorescence response towards Fe3+ ions in the presence of other metal ions in DMSO/H2 O solution (9/1, v/v). The very low limits of detection (LOD) were calculated to be 10 nM and 43 nM using UV-visible light absorption and fluorescence spectrophotometers, respectively. Job's plot analysis revealed the formation of a BGA-Fe3+ complex with a 1:1 binding stoichiometry ratio using UV-visible light spectroscopy. The sensing mechanism was also demonstrated using density functional theory calculation.

BACKGROUND: Although widely acknowledged that adequate maternal nutrition is important for mother and baby, limited research has focussed on women with severe mental illnesses (SMI) in pregnancy. The present study reports on nutritional factors and food choices and investigates barriers and facilitators to healthy nutritional choices by pregnant women with SMI. METHODS: A prospective mixed method study was undertaken of 38 pregnant women with SMI, including a cross-sectional survey, a food frequency questionnaire and 12 postnatal qualitative interviews, with integrated analysis of all data. RESULTS: Elevated rates of obesity (35%) were found, with 82% of women having above the recommended gestational weight gain. Despite perceived knowledge, 32% of women did not meet any of the Five Food Group serving recommendations for pregnancy and consumed above-recommended levels for processed (19%) and sugar snacks (51%). Thematic analysis identified four main barriers: a discrepancy between knowledge and action, food cravings, mental health, and physical health. During pregnancy, food cravings were reported in 66% of women, psychological distress in 71% and physical distress in 37%. Screening identified 19% with potential eating disordered behaviours. Despite the challenges, several facilitators were identified and covered three themes: access to a dietitian, information delivery and support, and comprehensive care. DISCUSSION: Women with SMI in pregnancy struggle with issues of obesity, gestational weight gain, food cravings and possible eating disorder behaviours. They have additional challenges when pregnant, with management of their mental health and physical health having a direct impact. Interventional strategies in this population should incorporate findings from this research.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition where in early diagnosis and interventions are key policy priorities in dementia services and research. We studied the functional and structural connectivity in mild AD to determine the nature of connectivity changes that coexist with neurocognitive deficits in the early stages of AD. METHODS: Fifteen mild AD subjects and 15 cognitively healthy controls (CHc) matched for age and gender, underwent detailed neurocognitive assessment and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Rest fMRI was analyzed using dual regression approach and DTI by voxel wise statistics. RESULTS: Patients with mild AD had significantly lower functional connectivity (FC) within the default mode network and increased FC within the executive network. The mild AD group scored significantly lower in all domains of cognition compared with CHc. But fractional anisotropy did not significantly (p < 0.05) differ between the groups. CONCLUSION: Resting state functional connectivity alterations are noted during initial stages of cognitive decline in AD, even when there are no significant white matter microstructural changes.

In the title hydrated salt, C6H7N2O2 (+)·C7H5O6S(-)·H2O, the benzene ring of the cation makes a dihedral angle of 1.32 (19)° with the attached nitro group. In the anion, an intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond with an S(6) ring motif is formed between the carb-oxyl and hy-droxy groups; the dihedral angle between the carb-oxyl group and the benzene ring is 8.76 (8)°. The crystal structure exhibits inter-molecular N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O, C-H⋯O, and π-π [centroid-centroid distances = 3.6634 (9) and 3.7426 (9) Å] inter-actions to form a three-dimensional network.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by an abnormal post-translational modifications (PTM) in amino acid sequence and aggregation of alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) protein. It is generally believed that dopamine (DA) metabolite in dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons promotes the aggregation of toxic α-Syn oligomers and protofibrils, whereas DA inhibits the formation of toxic fibers and even degrades the toxic fibers. Therefore, the study on interaction between DA metabolites and α-Syn oligomers is one of the current hot topics in neuroscience, because this effect may have direct relevance to the selective DAergic neuron loss in PD. Several mechanisms have been reported for DA metabolites induced α-Syn oligomers viz. i) The reactive oxygen species (ROS) released during the auto-oxidation or enzymatic oxidation of DA changes the structure of α-Syn by the oxidation of amino acid residue leading to misfolding, ii) The oxidized DA metabolites directly interact with α-Syn through covalent or non-covalent bonding leading to the formation of oligomers, iii) DA interacts with lipid or autophagy related proteins to decreases the degradation efficiency of α-Syn aggregates. However, there is no clear-cut mechanism proposed for the interaction between DA and α-Syn. However, it is believed that the lysine (Lys) side chain of α-Syn sequence is the initial trigger site for the oligomer formation. Herein, we review different chemical mechanism involved during the interaction of Lys side chain of α-Syn with DA metabolites such as dopamine-o-quinone (DAQ), dopamine-chrome (DAC), dopamine-aldehyde (DOPAL) and neuromelanin. This review also provides the promotive effect of divalent Cu2+ ions on DA metabolites induced α-Syn oligomers and its inhibition effect by antioxidant glutathione (GSH).

OBJECTIVE: This is a study to explore the risk perception among T2DM patients and to compare the pre-test and post-test levels of knowledge and lifestyle changes among T2DM patients at selected hospitals in Chennai. Most diabetics have type 2 diabetes, accounting for 85-90% of cases. Diabetes is a worldwide epidemic disease with distressing human, societal, and economic effects. It affects an estimated 382 million people worldwide in 2021. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The research design used mixed-method research, such as Exploratory Sequential Design. The phenomenological approach, in that sequential exploratory design for the qualitative and true experimental design for the quantitative study, was chosen. 60 samples of T2DM patients were selected using a simple random sampling technique through the lottery method and divided into experimental and control groups for every 30 samples in quantitative. Five samples were selected using convenient sampling for qualitative. RESULTS: In the quantitative study, the pre-test showed 4 (13.3%), and 5 (16.7%) adequate knowledge and lifestyle changes in both groups. Post-test experimental group showed that 23 (76.7%) had adequate knowledge and 23 (76.7%) changes in lifestyle found a drastic transformation from the pre-test as well as in the control group. The calculated Chi-square value showed a significant difference in the post-test level of lifestyle change among the T2DM patients between the groups at p<0.001 level. CONCLUSIONS: This inferred that Competent Based Intervention (CBI) on knowledge and lifestyle changes administered to T2DM patients in the experimental group was found to be effective. Competent Based Intervention is a nursing intervention that is well accepted and adopted by patients and easily implemented by nurses. It can be included in the nursing curriculum. In-service education can be arranged once a month for staff nurses and faculty members regarding Competent Based Intervention. The Nurse educator should encourage the nurses to effectively utilize research evidence-based practice related to Competent Based Intervention for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background: There are more than 5 million people with dementia in India. Multicentre studies looking at details of treatment for people with dementia In India are lacking. Clinical audit is a quality improvement process which aims to systematically assess, evaluate, and improve patient care. Evaluating current practice is the key to a clinical audit cycle. Aim: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic patterns and prescribing practices of psychiatrists for patients with dementia in India. Method: A retrospective case file study was conducted across several centers in India. Results: Information from the case records of 586 patients with dementia was obtained. Mean age of the patients was 71.14 years (standard deviation = 9.42). Three hundred twenty one (54.8%) were men. Alzheimer's disease (349; 59.6%) was the most frequent diagnosis followed by vascular dementia (117; 20%). Three hundred fifty five (60.6%) patients had medical disorders and 47.4% patients were taking medications for their medical conditions. Eighty one (69.2%) patients with vascular dementia had cardiovascular problems. Majority of the patients (524; 89.4%) were on medications for dementia. Most frequently prescribed treatment was Donepezil (230; 39.2%) followed by Donepezil-Memantine combination (225; 38.4%). Overall, 380 (64.8%) patients were on antipsychotics. Quetiapine (213, 36.3%) was the most frequently used antipsychotic. Overall, 113 (19.3%) patients were on antidepressants, 80 (13.7%) patients were on sedatives/hypnotics, and 16 (2.7%) patients were on mood stabilizers. Three hundred nineteen (55.4%) patients and caregivers of 374 (65%) patients were receiving psychosocial interventions. Conclusions: Diagnostic and prescription patterns in dementia which emerged from this study are comparable to other studies both nationally and internationally. Comparing current practices at individual and national levels against accepted guidelines, obtaining feedback, identifying gaps and instituting remedial measures help to improve the standard of care provided.

In the crystal, the cations and anions are linked by weak N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a layer parallel to the ac plane. A weak C-H⋯O inter-action and π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distances of 3.738 (3) and 3.748 (3) Å] also observed within the layer.

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a program based on the telementoring model [Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO)] for primary care physicians in diagnosing and treating patients with dementia. Method: The ECHO model was adapted through 12 live sessions of 2 h every 2 weeks consisting of a didactic presentation by the expert, peer-led new case discussions, and follow-up discussions. In addition, there were 10 h of self-paced e-learning and interim assignments. The impact was examined by noting participation, session ratings, monthly clinical reports, and comparing knowledge and competency scores before and after the course. Results: Among the 63 participants, 39.7% attended at least 80% of the sessions; completing the program successfully. The ratings for all sessions ranged from "good" to "excellent." The paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.001) in self-rated skills and confidence in diagnosing and treating dementia with an effect size of 1.25 and 1.37, respectively. No change in the knowledge score was observed throughout the course. A considerable increase in dementia-related clinical practice was observed during four monthly summary of clinical cases. Due to the limited data of monthly reports during the COVID pandemic, no statistical analysis was attempted. Conclusion: The ECHO model appears to have a positive immediate impact on the clinical ability of primary care physicians to diagnose and treat dementia. Its direct impact on patient health and at the community level should be aimed at in future studies.

RESUMO

Thalamus is a group of nuclei located deep inside the brain, well known for its sensory and cognitive functions. However, its role in the reward and behavior regulation is less explored. In this case series, we have presented four cases with inappropriate sexual behaviors (ISB) that are temporally related to thalamic infarction. We have discussed about the limbic part of thalamus and its extensive connections with other regions in regulating sexual behaviors. Although in all the four cases described there was underlying cognitive impairment that can itself increase the risk of ISB, there was potential contributing role of thalamic lesions.

The study's objective was to develop a co-fermentation process with appropriate fermentation parameters to produce a sour beer (similar to a Belgium sour beer) with an ethanol content of 6-8% (v/v) using a coculture of Saccharomyces pastorianus and Lactobacillus plantarum. Statistical optimization was conducted to determine fermentation conditions to produce a sour beer with ~ 3 mg/mL of lactic acid, similar to the traditional sour beer levels. Studies were conducted on the microbial dynamics and volatile compounds produced during this fermentation and aging process. GC-MS studies revealed the generation of novel bioactive compounds as well as the depletion of some volatile compounds during co-fermentation. The study detailed a 5-day co-fermentation process of S. pastorianus and L. plantarum and a 21-day aging process to prepare a sour beer with biochemical properties along the lines of traditional lambic beers. The interrelationship between the two microorganisms and the biochemical changes in the sour beer fermentation process was elucidated and the sensorial attributes have been described.

We report a high frequency regeneration protocol in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp. var. C 152) via somatic embryogenesis from 10-d-old primary leaf explants. A study was conducted to examine the effect of somaclonal variations in in vitro derived cowpea plants under field conditions. The regenerated plantlets were successfully transferred to field after hardening in vitro and grown for collecting R0, R1 and R2 seeds. The seeds of R1 and R2 generations were subsequently, grown under field conditions and their various biometrical traits were compared and evaluated with non-tissue cultured cowpea plants as check. There was no detectable somaclonal variation induced in R0-R2 in any of the biometrical traits. The results indicate that the inclusion of different plant growth promoters at specified concentrations and duration in our earlier tissue culture work did not induce any detectable mutation. The RAPD analysis also shows that there is no genetic variation among R2 cowpea plants. The somatic embryogenesis protocol we report could thus be safely applied for high frequency true-to-type regeneration and transformations protocols without any somaclonal variation.

We have developed a stroma-free culture system in which mouse marrow or thymus cells, known to be enriched for lymphoid progenitors, can be driven to generate natural killer (NK) cells. Culture of lineage marker (Lin)-, c-kit+, Sca2+, interleukin (IL)-2/15Rbeta (CD122)- marrow cells in IL-6, IL-7, stem cell factor (SCF), and flt3 ligand (flt3-L) for 5-6 d followed by IL-15 alone for an additional 4-5 d expanded the starting population 30-40-fold and gave rise to a virtually pure population of NK1.1+, CD3- cells. Preculture in IL-6, IL-7, SCF, and flt3-L was necessary for inducing IL-15 responsiveness in the progenitors because the cells failed to significantly expand when cultured in IL-15 alone from the outset. Although culture of the sorted progenitors in IL-6, IL-7, SCF, and flt3-L for the entire 9-11-d culture period caused significant expansion, no lytic NK1.1+ cells were generated if IL-15 was not added, demonstrating a critical role for IL-15 in NK differentiation. Thus, two distinct populations of NK progenitors, IL-15 unresponsive and IL-15 responsive, have been defined. Similar results were obtained with Lin-, CD44+, CD25-, c-kit+ lymphoid progenitors obtained from adult thymus. The NK cells generated by this protocol lysed the NK-sensitive target YAC-1 and expressed markers of mature NK cells with the notable absence of Ly-49 major histocompatibility complex (MHC) receptors. However, despite the apparent lack of these inhibitory MHC receptors, the NK cells generated could distinguish MHC class I+ from class I- syngeneic targets, suggesting the existence of novel class I receptors.

The activating receptor, NKG2D, is expressed on a variety of immune effector cells and recognizes divergent families of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-related ligands, including the MIC and ULBP proteins. Infection, stress, or transformation can induce NKG2D ligand expression, resulting in effector cell activation and killing of the ligand-expressing target cell. The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) membrane glycoprotein, UL16, binds to three of the five known ligands for human NKG2D. UL16 is retained in the endoplasmic reticulum and cis-Golgi apparatus of cells and causes MICB to be similarly retained and stabilized within cells. Coexpression of UL16 markedly reduces cell surface levels of MICB, ULBP1, and ULBP2, and decreases susceptibility to natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity. Domain swapping experiments demonstrate that the transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains of UL16 are important for intracellular retention of UL16, whereas the ectodomain of UL16 participates in down-regulation of NKG2D ligands. The intracellular sequestration of NKG2D ligands by UL16 represents a novel HCMV immune evasion mechanism to add to the well-documented viral strategies directed against antigen presentation by classical MHC molecules.

Sixteen 1,3,5-triphenyl-2-pyrazolines were synthesized and their anti-infective activities (against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Rv, six bacterial and four fungal strains) were tested. Only compound with SO(2)CH(3) in the para position of the A-ring was active against the tubercular strain at 100 microg/ml concentration. All compounds showed good anti infective activity against Escherichia coli and poor activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Compounds 4, 12, 13 and 14 exhibited reasonable activity against all the organisms tested (<0.309 microM except against S. aureus. The activity of these compounds correlated with their lipophilic/hydrophilic nature. Compounds 4, 10 and 16 showed very good activity (>88% reduction) against four fungi studied at 2mg/ml. All these compounds possess halogen substitutions. Compound 11 showed very high activity (>90%) against three fungi. Majority of the compounds showed more than 90% inhibition against one or two fungi. Since pyrazolines are reported to inhibit the activity of p-glycoprotein, they may prevent drug resistance developed by microorganism.

An efficient in vitro plant regeneration system was established for elite, recalcitrant Malaysian indica rice, Oryza sativa L. CV. MR 219 using mature seeds as explant on Murashige and Skoog and Chu N6 media containing 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid and kinetin either alone or in different combinations. L-proline, casein hydrolysate and L-glutamine were added to callus induction media for enhancement of embryogenic callus induction. The highest frequency of friable callus induction (84%) was observed in N6 medium containing 2.5 mg l(-1) 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid, 0.2 mg l(-1) kinetin, 2.5 mg l(-1) L-proline, 300 mg l(-1) casein hydrolysate, 20 mg l(-1) L-glutamine and 30 g l(-1) sucrose under culture in continuous lighting conditions. The maximum regeneration frequency (71%) was observed, when 30-day-old N6 friable calli were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 3 mg l(-1) 6-benzyl aminopurine, 1 mg l(-1) naphthalene acetic acid, 2.5 mg l(-1) L-proline, 300 mg l(-1) casein hydrolysate and 3% maltose. Developed shoots were rooted in half strength MS medium supplemented with 2% sucrose and were successfully transplanted to soil with 95% survival. This protocol may be used for other recalcitrant indica rice genotypes and to transfer desirable genes in to Malaysian indica rice cultivar MR219 for crop improvement.

RESUMO

This paper examines the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on migration. The rapid spread of the pandemic caught countries across the world off guard, resulting in widespread lockdowns that clamped down on mobility, commercial activities and social interactions. In India, the pandemic precipitated a severe 'crisis of mobility', with migrant labourers in many major cities seeking to return to their hometowns. Their desperate attempts to return home by any means available rendered the lockdown ineffective in several areas, prompting clashes with authorities, last-minute policy relief and, eventually, the arrangement of transport measures. This paper aims to shed light on the vulnerability of India's internal migrants in terms of their mobility, gender and mental health. In addition, it critically analyses the limitations of public policy in addressing migrants and suggests recommendations for the way ahead.

Language is a vital component of cognition essential for communication. Proficiency in more than one language has become a norm for many in the current era of globalisation. In neurogenerative conditions decline in language ability leads to early dependency. Studies have reported higher cognitive reserve in multilingual compared to monolinguals. Determining preserved language skills in a patient presenting with cognitive concerns helps in understanding the cognitive reserve, early signs of dementia, the extent of impairment due to language deficits and planning for cognitive stimulation. In this article, we have described an elderly woman with multilinguistic abilities who presented with semantic dementia.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer that causes death among women worldwide. Incidence of breast cancer is increasing worldwide, and the age at which breast cancer develops has shifted from 50- 70 years to 30-40 years. Chemotherapy is the most commonly used effective treatment strategy to combat breast cancer. However, one of the major drawbacks is low selective site-specificity and the consequent toxic insult to normal healthy cells. The nanocarrier system is consistently utilised to minimise the various limitations involved in the conventional treatment of breast cancer. The nanocarrier based targeted drug delivery system provides better bioavailability, prolonged circulation with an effective accumulation of drugs at the tumour site either by active or passive drug targeting. Active targeting has been achieved by receptor/protein anchoring and externally guided magnetic nanocarriers, whereas passive targeting accomplished by employing the access to the tunnel via leaky tumour vasculature, utilising the tumour microenvironment, because the nanocarrier systems can reduce the toxicity to normal cells. As of now a few nanocarrier systems have been approved by FDA, and various nanoformulations are in the pipeline at the preclinical and clinical development for targeting breast cancer; among them, polymeric micelles, microemulsions, magnetic microemulsions, liposomes, dendrimers, carbon nanotubes, and magnetic Nanoparticles (NPs) are the most common. The current review highlights the active and passive targeting potential of nanocarriers in breast cancer and discusses their role in targeting breast cancer without affecting normal healthy cells.
