RESUMO

The fundamental objective in restoring a defect created after total laryngectomy with a custom made silicone prosthesis is to enable the patient to cope better with the difficult process of rehabilitation after a major surgery has been performed. A cosmetically acceptable prosthesis that reproduces the color and form and allows the patient to return to his/her accustomed lifestyle. A sequence of steps for construction of custom-made laryngeal prosthesis is outlined in this case report using the readily available materials and method which any prosthodontist can readily understand and deliver.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to fabricate complete denture with palatal reservoir filled with artificial saliva for a post radiotherapy edentulous patient. BACKGROUND: Xerostomia is a subjective complaint rather than a disease. It is caused by irradiation, medication, Sjogren's syndrome & neurological factors such as stress. Radiotherapeutic treatment of head and neck cancer patients often causes long term dysfunction involving their salivary function, swallowing capabilities & taste. All three of these domains are affected by radiation- induced damage to the salivary glands. This in turn results in poor retention of complete denture, frequent trauma to alveolar ridge & other oral infections. All these events drastically affects quality of life of ageing patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A complete denture in heat cure acrylic resin was fabricated in which a palatal reservoir was made on the palatal side. RESULTS: Problems arising due to xerostomia were reduced to a great extent. CONCLUSION: Prosthodontic management of Xerostomic patient include several techniques. This paper presents a case report of post radiotherapy edentulous patient in which complete denture with palatal reservoir filled with artificial saliva was fabricated.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The retromolar pad also called piriformis papilla is a mucosal elevation located in the retromolar area covering the retromolar triangle. After molar loss, the bony alveolar process and surrounding soft periodontal tissue remodel, mainly resorb and blend with retromolar pad. It is a key intraoral landmark in prosthodontics. AIM: The aim of this in-vitro study was to analyze the various anatomical shapes and sizes of retromolar pad in 150 completely edentulous patients between 55 to 70 years of age group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 150 completely edentulous patients. The shapes of retromolar pad on the left and right side were seen and divided into pear, triangular and round shape. The comparison of the mean longitudinal diameter and transverse diameter on the right and left sides was done. The data was evaluated statistically. The chi-square test was used for the comparison between the proportions with the help of standard deviation, t-test was used for comparison between the left and the right side and ANOVA test was used for comparison between the various shapes of the retromolar pads. RESULTS: The result showed that there was statistically significant difference among different shapes of retromolar pad and there was significant difference in mean transverse and longitudinal diameter on right and left side, the mean value of the longitudinal diameter on left and right side was 8.81 and 8.69 whereas the mean value of the transverse diameter on left and right side was 6.79 and 6.82 respectively and p-value obtained for both was 0.550 and 0.814 respectively. CONCLUSION: The study conclude that there are three different shapes of retromolar pad among which pear and triangular shaped retomolar pad provides more stability in lower denture because of increase surface area.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the salivary fluoride levels after toothbrushing with dentifrices containing 458 ppm and 1000 ppm of fluoride and to compare salivary fluoride levels of two dentifrices at different intervals of time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 50 children in the age group of 6-12 years were selected. The individuals were randomly divided into two groups using either 458 ppm or 1000 ppm fluoride dentifrice, respectively. Whole saliva samples were collected prior to brushing, immediately after brushing, and at subsequent intervals after brushing into sterile test tubes. RESULTS: Data collected were evaluated using unpaired t-test. Salivary fluoride level following the use of 458 ppm fluoride dentifrice was significantly lower than the level found following the use of 1000 ppm dentifrice, but the levels were above the baseline values even after 1 h. CONCLUSION: There was considerable salivary fluoride retention after brushing with fluoride dentifrices.

RESUMO

The crown- and sleeve-coping denture is a removable prosthesis that is supported by both selectively retained teeth and the residual ridge or mucosa. It is a versatile and successful means of achieving long-term restoration of a partially edentulous jaw. Insertion and removal of the denture and routine oral hygiene are easy to perform. The beneficial results of this form of treatment can be considered for a wide variety of clinical applications for the severely advanced periodontitis case. This paper presents a case report on the prosthetic rehabilitation of a partially edentulous patient with a telescopic overdenture for the mandible and complete denture for the maxilla.
