RESUMO

Shell structure and magic numbers in atomic nuclei were generally explained by pioneering work that introduced a strong spin-orbit interaction to the nuclear shell model potential. However, knowledge of nuclear forces and the mechanisms governing the structure of nuclei, in particular far from stability, is still incomplete. In nuclei with equal neutron and proton numbers (N = Z), enhanced correlations arise between neutrons and protons (two distinct types of fermions) that occupy orbitals with the same quantum numbers. Such correlations have been predicted to favour an unusual type of nuclear superfluidity, termed isoscalar neutron-proton pairing, in addition to normal isovector pairing. Despite many experimental efforts, these predictions have not been confirmed. Here we report the experimental observation of excited states in the N = Z = 46 nucleus (92)Pd. Gamma rays emitted following the (58)Ni((36)Ar,2n)(92)Pd fusion-evaporation reaction were identified using a combination of state-of-the-art high-resolution γ-ray, charged-particle and neutron detector systems. Our results reveal evidence for a spin-aligned, isoscalar neutron-proton coupling scheme, different from the previous prediction. We suggest that this coupling scheme replaces normal superfluidity (characterized by seniority coupling) in the ground and low-lying excited states of the heaviest N = Z nuclei. Such strong, isoscalar neutron-proton correlations would have a considerable impact on the nuclear level structure and possibly influence the dynamics of rapid proton capture in stellar nucleosynthesis.

The reduced transition probabilities, B(E2; 0(gs)+ -->2(1)+), have been measured in the radioactive isotopes (108,106)Sn using subbarrier Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Deexcitation gamma rays were detected by the highly segmented MINIBALL Ge-detector array. The results, B(E2;0(gs)+ -->2(1)+)=0.222(19)e2b2 for 108Sn and B(E2; 0(gs)+-->2(1)+)=0.195(39)e2b2 for 106Sn were determined relative to a stable 58Ni target. The resulting B(E2) values are approximately 30% larger than shell-model predictions and deviate from the generalized seniority model. This experimental result may point towards a weakening of the N=Z=50 shell closure.

RESUMO

Collective properties of the low-lying levels in the odd-A 67-73Cu were investigated by Coulomb excitation with radioactive beams. The beams were produced at ISOLDE and postaccelerated by REX-ISOLDE up to 2.99 MeV/u. In 67,69Cu, low-lying 1/2(-), 5/2(-), and 7/2(-) states were populated. In 71,73Cu, besides the known transitions deexciting the single-particle-like 5/2(-) and core-coupled 7/2(-) levels, gamma rays of 454 and 135 keV, respectively, were observed for the first time. Based on a reanalysis of beta-decay work and comparison with the systematics, a spin 1/2(-) is suggested for these excited states. Three B(E2) values were determined in each of the four isotopes. The results indicate a significant change in the structure of the odd-A Cu isotopes beyond N=40 where single-particle-like and collective levels are suggested to coexist at very low excitation energies.

Neutron-rich, radioactive Zn isotopes were investigated at the Radioactive Ion Beam facility REX-ISOLDE (CERN) using low-energy Coulomb excitation. The energy of the 2(1)+ state in 78Zn could be firmly established and for the first time the 2+ --> 0(1)+ transition in 80Zn was observed at 1492(1) keV. B(E2,2(1)+ --> 0(1)+) values were extracted for (74,76,78,80)Zn and compared to large scale shell model calculations. With only two protons outside the Z=28 proton core, 80Zn is the lightest N=50 isotone for which spectroscopic information has been obtained to date. Two sets of advanced shell model calculations reproduce the observed B(E2) systematics. The results for N=50 isotones indicate a good N=50 shell closure and a strong Z=28 proton core polarization. The new results serve as benchmarks to establish theoretical models, predicting the nuclear properties of the doubly magic nucleus 78Ni.

The reduced transition probabilities B(E2;0(+) --> 2(+)(1)) of the neutron-rich (74)Zn and (70)Ni nuclei have been measured by Coulomb excitation in a (208)Pb target at intermediate energy. These nuclei have been produced at Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds via interactions of a 60A MeV (76)Ge beam with a Be target. The B(E2) value for (70)Ni(42) is unexpectedly large, which indicates that neutrons added above N=40 strongly polarize the Z=28 proton core. In the Zn isotopic chain, the steep rise of B(E2) values beyond N=40 continues up to (74)Zn(44). The enhanced proton core polarization in (70)Ni is attributed to the monopole interaction between the neutron in the g(9/2) and protons in the f(7/2) and f(5/2) spin-orbit partner orbitals. This interaction could result in a weakening of magicity in (78)Ni(50).

Reduced microbial exposure in early life may contribute to the increase of atopic diseases in 'westernized' societies but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. The objective of this study was to examine how exposure to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) during early antigen encounter might influence the maturation of neonatal lymphoid cells, and to define possible differences in this respect between neonates with high risk of allergy due to a family history (FH(+)) and controls with no apparent hereditary risk (FH(-)). Cord blood mononuclear cells from the FH(+) or FH(-) group were stimulated with pure LPS or beta-lactoglobulin (beta-LG) in the presence of LPS. T cell expression of chemokine receptors CCR4 and CXCR3 was determined by flow cytometry and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Cellular expression of interleukin (IL)-4 was analysed by quantitative RT-PCR, whereas interferon (IFN)-gamma was analysed by both quantitative RT-PCR and immunoassay. Stimulation with LPS, or beta-LG together with LPS, induced up-regulation of CCR4 (P < 0.05) and CXCR3 (P < 0.05). For CCR4, such up-regulation was related to the level of IL-4 produced by the same T cells (r(S) = 0.49, P = 0.03), while CXCR3 expression was negatively correlated with the IL-4 levels (r(S) = -0.56, P = 0.02). Compared with the FH(-) group, the FH(+) group showed a significantly lower capacity for generation of CCR4(+) T cells (mean percentage of total T cells: FH(+), 2.42%versus FH(-), 5.74%; P < 0.01), whereas induction of CXCR3 and IFN-gamma did not differ significantly between the two groups. When the immune system in early life encounters antigen together with LPS, the T cell potential for compartmentalized interaction with other immune cells might be increased by elevated CCR4- and CXCR3-expression levels. In neonates at hereditary allergy risk, this putative homeostatic mechanism could theoretically be jeopardized due to decreased up-regulation of CCR4. Conversely, Th1 responses to antigen in the presence of LPS did not appear to be reduced compared with controls.

We have studied the cytotoxicity of 10 commercially available compomers. Extracts were taken in cell culture medium of non-cured, freshly-cured, and aged samples. Murine L-929 fibroblasts were exposed to the extracts for 24 h and the cytotoxicity was evaluated using dimethylthiazol diphenyltetrazolium (MTT) assay and neutral red uptake (NRU). Extracts were rated as severely, moderately, or slightly cytotoxic when the activity relative to controls was less than 30%, between 30% and 60%, or greater than 60%, respectively. Extracts of non-cured materials were rated severely toxic with both methods, with one exception. All but one freshly-cured material exhibited moderate to severe toxicity in both assays. Aged test specimens were rated moderately to severely toxic. Non-cured materials were generally more toxic than cured, with two exceptions. Aging and polishing the samples to remove non-polymerized surface film affected cytotoxicity to a varying degree. Curing reduced cytotoxicity in the MTT test from severe to moderate in 7 of 9 materials, but had relatively little effect in the NRU assay. Aging and polishing, however, had little effect on cytotoxicity evaluated by the MTT test, but markedly reduced cytotoxicity in NRU in 6 of 8 extracts. To conclude, extracts made from compomers used for dental fillings were found to be cytotoxic both before and after setting.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Biocompatibility of dental materials is dependent on the release of elements from the materials. In addition, the composition, pretreatment, and handling of the materials influence the element release. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the cytotoxicity of dental alloys, metals, and ceramics, with specific emphasis on the effects of altering the composition and the pretreatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: By using cells from a mouse fibroblast cell line and the agar overlay test, Millipore filter test, and MTT test, cytotoxicity of various metals, metal alloys, and ceramics for dental restoration were studied. Effects of altering the composition of a high noble gold alloy and of pretreatment of a ceramic-bonding alloy were also studied. In addition, the release of elements into the cell culture medium by the materials studied was measured using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer. The results of the MTT test were analyzed statistically using ANOVA and Scheffé test at a significance level of P <.05. RESULTS: Specimens manufactured from materials intended for dental restorations and handled in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions were ranked from "noncytotoxic" to "mildly cytotoxic" according to the agar overlay and Millipore filter tests. For the MTT test, no significant differences were observed between these materials and controls, with the exception of JS C-gold and unalloyed titanium. The modified materials were ranked from "mildly cytotoxic" to "moderately cytotoxic" in the agar overlay and Millipore filter tests and from "noncytotoxic" to "moderately cytotoxic" in the MTT test. Thus, cytotoxicity was related to the alloy composition and treatment. The release of Cu and Zn seemed to be important for the cytotoxic effect. CONCLUSION: Alterations in the composition and the pretreatment can greatly influence the cytotoxicity, and the results stress the importance of carefully following the manufacturers' instructions when handling dental materials.

RESUMO

The nucleus 163Lu has been populated through the reaction 139La(29Si,5n) with a beam energy of 157 MeV. Three triaxial, strongly deformed (TSD) bands have been observed with very similar rotational properties. The first excited TSD band has earlier been assigned as a one-phonon wobbling excitation built on the lowest-lying (yrast) TSD band. The large B(E2)(out)/B(E2)(in) value obtainable for one of four observed transitions between the second and first excited TSD bands is in good agreement with particle-rotor calculations for a two-phonon wobbling excitation.
